I recently made #Simplicity1356, which is a reprint of a vintage reversible wrap dress. I also used vintage fabrics that were gifted to me in a bagful by the neighbor. Here are the things I learned: 1. I do like this pattern. It’s pretty simple, straightforward, and as a general thing the most difficult piece *should* be getting your both sides fabrics lined up properly for sewing together. 2. Chiffon is the work of the devil. Full stop. 3. French seams don’t work well on curves. 4. See number 2. 5. I think when I make it again I will, instead, have the front wrap around over the back and put the large tie there. Left side is a floral watercolor printed devil chiffon. Right side is another floral printed something or other - poly crepe, perhaps? I don’t know. #Sewingbowlchallenge #MusterMay Pic 1: tadaaaaa: here she is, my Jiffy #S1356 Pic 2: My challenge that Emmanuel @theycallhim_spade drew from the sewing bowls: Use a 1) Vintage Pattern to make 2) Pajamas / Robe / Undergarment from 3) Quilting Fabric in a 4) Herringbone weave of 5) Color of my choice while adding 6) hardware and be inspired by 7) the 70's So I MUSTERED all available creativity: Chose 1) the Jiffy dress as 2) night-/evening wear to be made from 3) Alexander Henry Patchwork Fabric called "Angelitas", paired with 4) Herringbone linen and flower Liberty cotton, in 5) muted rose/gold colour scheme, adding 6) metallic piping & buttons and have 7) young Julie @consistentlydifferentdesigns as inspiration. To actually master making the dress I then had to MUSTER all my problem-solving skills: Pic 3: I cut according to the instruction's measurement table, plus 10 cm for knee-length. It turned out being 1 size too big => recut to size 8 (graded to 12 at hip) As the patchwork fabric was too narrow with 1.1m width and my cotton lawn from my stash was too short, some piecing (aka kissntussing) at the shoulder and the skirt edge was applied Also, the patchwork Angelitas were a bit sturdy, I didnt want to line them So: how to achieve clean edges 🤔? => invent facing for the neckhole, create bias tape for the armhole, hem the side Pic 4: The linen and the cotton lawn don't want to be sewn together at the hem - the linen bucking like a young colt🐎, so I had to redo the hems separately (thanks to Kerstin @miss_mollipolli for the idea 😘!!!) Pic 5: THE HARDWARE in detail: (faux) metal vintage buttons and metal piping Pic 6-9: Some posing, back + front Pic 10: #ShownWithEyesClosed #Outtakes [In its use as Night&Evening wear: no zipper, no buttons! The ties make dressing / undressing very easy, while the Angelitas make sure it's not getting too kinky 😎] This was one of the most time consuming and yet most fun projects in a long time! The @vintage.weekly theme for this past week was "Sunshine Sixties". It is the bright colors and bold prints of the "Swinging" era that often make me choose a 60's sewing pattern to match with my most saturated fabrics in my stash. I have been wanting to sew this project idea together for the last few years - it's a Simplicity no.1356, a year 1969 reprint - and for an easy wrap-on dress it turned out fantastic imho. It is so much more classy than the average hippie era design...and it helps me match with our backyard's peony bush flowers!! That alone makes my dress even more cheerful and happy than the explosion of pink and purple, my favorite colors! . . A full post about this dress project is now up on my blog.
