Lots of comings and goings this May with little time at home to sew. I always like to plan my wardrobe for a trip. Since I haven’t had much time for photos I played around with my iPad and pen to recreate what was going into my suitcase for each trip. It really helps me to know that I will be able to mix and match everything I bring. F I R S T J A C K E T OF 2022 I have been wanting to make a boyfriend blazer for the longest time and had some beautiful black fabric set aside for the project. My very thoughtful coworker gave me the best Christmas gift 🎁 3 yards of amazing raw silk in a beautiful herringbone design (thank you Matt and Sophie). I instantly envisioned the jacket I had been thinking about, slightly longer than my usual jacket length and a bit broader and loose fitting. I had been looking at lots of oversized blazer patterns and decided to go with Simplicity 8697 which I already had in my collection. I am thrilled with how this jacket sewed up. The collar had a very interesting construction, which I thought was excellent. Loved the patch pockets top stitched with a triple stitch (very close to the edge), vented sleeves, and a back vent. The pattern is designed to be unlined but I like the ease of wearing with a lining, and I had this piece of grey and black leopard print that seemed like a good match, so I drafted my own (which is not hard to do). I also added a welted inside breast pocket. I am definitely sewing up a black version EXACTLY like this one. Forgot to post this March make boyfriend jacket. The pattern is Simplicity 8697 and the fabric has been in my stash for years! So long ago and down at the bottom that I don’t know where I sourced it or fabric content (I’ll guess at poly cotton suiting). Can’t say it was a quick make since I tried only half successfully to match the uneven plaid. Also the fabric is a bit soft so I tried to draft a lining pattern for it with a satin lining to give it more “structure. That was a challenge I’d never tried but it worked out ok. It’s been a win/win as I destashed both the fashion fabric and lining . And I have a new jacket that’s already gotten lots of wear on chilly spring days. #s8697 , #boyfriendjackets, sosew50

Day 17 of the @blkmakersmatter #bmmsewtember challenge: Share a menswear inspired look. I love the idea of wearing a loose fitting unstructured blazer. Kind of like your wearing your boyfriend’s jacket. I guess that’s why they call it a boyfriend jacket. Or in this case, a hubby jacket 🤣. Sporting my latest make, a corduroy blazer! I love the loose, relaxed fit of this unlined “boyfriend” jacket, made with a soft corduroy in a rusty red color. I took the time to finish all interior seams with binding, also known as Hong Kong seams, choosing a chocolaty brown pre-made bias binding. I used brown “leather” buttons for the front closure and sleeve vents. I made this jacket to enjoy as a layering piece for the remainder of the fall/winter months, as well as to work on one of my sewing goals for 2024 of tailoring. I recently rescued this pinstripe lavender blazer from my scrap heap where it had languished for two years, when frustration and disgust set in. I got to the point of attaching the upper collar and facing to the undercollar, creating the lapel. No matter how many times I tried, the collar did not line up correctly on the lapel. The lapel points and seams were wonky. So I just gave up. In the meantime, my sewing skills improved by continuing to sew and taking virtual sewing classes. (Thank you @terryfoxsewingdiaries, an excellent sewing instructor!) Then, one day while digging through my scraps for a piece of fabric for a pocket bag, I came across the jacket. After studying the collar and lapel, I knew exactly how to fix them. It was a personal triumph! My advice to you is, do not throw away those projects that have conspired against you. The ones that cause you to pull out your hair, swear, and send you running from what is typically your sanctuary. Set them aside to revisit at a later date. You may be rewarded with a sense of pride and accomplishment, your frustrations long forgotten. Pattern - Simplicity 8697 Fabric - lavender pinstripe polyester suiting. One thing about me is that I don’t like to pay much for fabric. I’m always shopping bargains when it comes to my fabric. Most of my fabric I got at a steal like this one which my friend picked up for me for $1/yd in LA’s garment district. Actually paid more in shipping than the actual fabric. It was only 1 button hole and a big decision. Since I have been sewing with my vintage singer sewing machine I thought I would need to use a button hole attachment, and I had 2 in my stash, but then decided on the special foot and a Zig Zag stitch. After I cut open the button hole I did finish it with some hand stitching. The Simplicity #S8697 oversized blazer. Do you love a project right through every step and try on until its finished and then it somehow feels blah? That is how I felt with this blazer. I made more errors in steps 32-39 than all proceeding steps which was rather frustrating. When the facings went on I felt disappointed with how it now made me feel. Once hemmed it was draping weirdly on the front which I sort of remedied in a lazy arse way by rolling and stitching the facings up more at the front. The linen blend slid around like mad and also frayed a lot and I should have overlocked edges after cutting it out. What I do love is the oversized fit but I feel there is a dullness in this fabric which probably would have been great as pants and away from my face but it defs makes me feel flat. Also first time doing hong kong binding on all the seams and I enjoyed learning how to do this although I think I didn’t do it entirely right. This morning I tried it on with 3 different bottoms skirt/jeans and these shorts and didn’t entirely love any of them but I’d ran out of time and my hubby was ready to leave so this is where my outfit landed. Also wanted hubby to humour me and take some full length Insta worthy pics because why should he have the only good pics on my grid but that was a fail so after this I’ll be back to the bad selfie shots. Having a bad hair day as well so put on sparkly earrings but still feeling ordinary. Also shoe choice is making me feel very preppy. I’ve been back from my trip to Europe for two of weeks now and easing my way down from the high of this fabulous experience. I was able to fly to Amsterdam and meet 5 other folks from other parts of the United States who participated in the photoshoot with me as we cruised down the Rhine River, along with a team photographers, art directors, producers, stylists, etc as they filmed advertising for Viking River Cruise line. It’s still hard for me to describe the 🤯 adventure. Most days were spent in wardrobe but I did have some space in my luggage to bring a few of my favorite handmade pieces, including my boiled wool coat in Ochre, with the beautiful dotted surface interest.  It was the perfect traveling piece as it was lightweight, warm and had a huge hood, which, in combination with my handmade hat, eliminated my need for an umbrella, the few times it was drizzly. I was able to do a day of sightseeing in Amsterdam (those canals and cathedral were spectacular) before we boarded the ship and then I stayed a few extra days on my own in Heidelberg, Germany. What an amazing city - I had a tour guide for 4 hours who took me all through the city, up to the famous Heidelberg Castle (the window I’m standing in front of is up in the castle looking out over the city) and to the best candy shop founded in 1863 Der Heidelberger Studentenkuss. I chased people down the street to take style pictures of all the combat boots, leather pants, leggings, fabulous coats and other chic street looks. Lots of other tall women here and there 👯‍♀️ maybe my German heritage was the reason I felt so at home. This cozy quilt blazer is inspired by a jacket Carmelo Anthony wore on a tour of his house in the fall. This is made from a quilt I got from @homegoods and I finished it off with bias binding I made from a pink gradient checkered cotton from @joann_stores. It's a little rainy and chilly in NYC and the Knicks are about to advance to the next round of playoffs so this is well timed! It's also the project I was working on when my cousin Alain passed last month so it's the impetus (as Knicks announcer and former Knick Clyde Frasier would say) for my recent return to posting and blogging.
