It's been a wet and windy day today, perfect for staying indoors and sewing. 🧵 I've had a lovely afternoon finishing off three projects that I've had on the go. The first is this #s8839 top in linen from @thefineclothcompany . It is the first fabric I've bought since having my colours done, and I'm trying to embrace a colour that hasn't been in my wardrobe since I was at primary school. 💛 The colour of this linen is 'Vintage Pale Gold,' and it's a very close match for Light Clear Gold in the Warm Spring palette (even closer than the second photo shows). It's hard to capture the colour accurately, but trust me when I say it's been a little like sewing sunshine. 🌞 Ironically, Mum had told me for years that I should 'wear more yellow,' (particularly 'daffodil'). She told me that it suited me when I was little, and she loved that yellow is such a cheerful colour. Well, it turns out that Mum was right - there are four different yellows in my colour palette, and one of them is called Daffodil. 🌼💝 This is my third version of this pattern, my second with short sleeves, and I made the same adjustments as my pink version (on my grid in March). I'm hoping to wear this top for #MeMadeMay2025 but, unfortunately, it's looking like it might be too cold this week. 😳 I plan to do a separate post about having my colours done, but I just want to say here that I loved the whole experience. There are a few reasons I am happy with this latest make: 1. It fills a gap in my wardrobe, which really needs more tops. Every MeMadeMay I confirm a lack of tops to wear with my skirts, but I really struggle to find styles I like, both in sewing patterns and RTW. I'm just too fussy. 🤓 But this #s8839 I like. (Thank you to my lovely colleagues who reassured me that I didn't look like a gridiron player in those big sleeves. 🏈😲😄) 2. I love this linen - it is such beautiful quality and lovely to sew and wear. 3. I love this colour. 🩷 4. I was disappointed that I didn't love my original make in this fabric (an Estella Dress) and am so relieved that I could reuse it to make something that will get worn a lot more. ✂️ 5. My acid-milkmaid-pirate #s8839 hack. I bought this pattern for the sleeves-of-dreams, but wasn't into the bodice. I ruminated for months on what kind of bodice to make then saw a little crop top with a double frill at the bottom edge and had the realisation that I needed to go maximum ruffle to truly let these sleeves have their moment. I basically made a deeper tube and a shallower tube, sewed the shallower one up inside the deeper one, then shirred the living daylight out of them. The fabric is from @newcrafthouse and is sort of pre-shirred anyway, making this an extremely textured experience. I made a toile with cheap fabric, but as it was a heavier weight, when I made the real thing it tightened up so much more and turned out tiny. I wanted it to be fine, as all that shirring had taken a long time and I find it SO BORING. But it was like wearing a corset, and I do believe if you're making your own clothes you may as well put the full effort in to make them great. So, I actually bought more fabric and started the bodice from scratch. Once shirred, I steamed it to hold the elastic, then cut away a triangle on each side to fit the sleeves in. That's pretty much it. I'm wearing it with some customized jeans I bought from @lewannamountain when I stumbled upon her wonderful treasure trove in Berwick-Upon-Tweed earlier this year. I knew that they must be mine as they are sort of pastel unicorn rainbow splash dyed (!), but they were much too big. I took them in at the centre back seam and ended up taking them in so much I had to unpick the pockets, make them smaller and sew them back on. It all adds to the handcrafted look I think! This was an extremely sociable photoshoot at 8am on a weekday. Many people seemingly were on the way to the shops to buy a loaf of bread for their breakfast and stopped to have a chat and ask me what I was doing. You can see two of them if you scroll through! One offered me to come to her house and do the shoot in her garden as I told her I was feeling self conscious! Another person came out to have a cigarette in her yard overlooking the street and asked me if I was doing exercises as she couldn't see my tripod 😂😂😂.

Progress photos of the sleeves of my latest project - another #s8839 (last photo), but this time View A with those fabulous long sleeves. I'm using a lovely silk/cotton voile from @wearethefabricstore in a gorgeous shade of purple (I want to say it's violet??) 💜 Sticking to my sewing resolution, this fabric is from my stash (bought a year ago), and the soft drape is proving to be perfect for those puffy sleeves. The fabric is lightweight and semi-sheer, and I thought that bought bias binding, as suggested on the pattern, would be too 'heavy' for the elastic casings. I didn't have enough of the purple fabric left to make binding, bias or otherwise, so ended up using scraps of another silk/cotton voile in a mossy green (photo 2). The casings were a little fiddly to press and sew, and I lost the elastic three times while trying to sew the ends into the casings 😳 but all is forgiven when I look at the gathers in those sleeves. Assuming I don't make any big stuff-ups in the final stages, this will be my entry for #sewaprilblouse25 hosted by @cloth_edit and @sewn_on_the_tyne . It's taken me a few days to clock that I am working on a project that meets the rules of this challenge. I found this pretty blue cotton double gauze remnant at Joann Fabrics for $1 and some change a few months ago. I used it to make this super soft tank top version of Simplicity’s #s8839 and just folded the armholes in to finish them, but probably should have used bias tape. It is high 90’s temps here aaaallll week, and this top is so lightweight it’s perfect for the heat wave!

Okay, one last Halloween top! 🎃🐇🧹🧙🏻‍♀️ This is a brave combination but I am glad I went with my gut - and the input of @divinedita! Great minds think alike 😄 Initially had had planned purple cuffs but didn’t like the way they came out, so I took them off and did elastic instead. It gives a better puffy sleeve. The purple fabric is Harry Potter - do you see the Sorting Hat and the Nimbus 3000, along with Luba Lovegood’s Patronus? The pale pink pumpkin sleeves is fabric I bought in 2020 to make face masks. I’m glad I finally got to do something else with the fabric! 💗🎃 This is the first time I used Simplicity 8839, and I have to say, I really love this bodice! My latest make - #s8839 (view B) in linen repurposed from an unworn Estella Dress. After my last two projects, this was a very straightforward make. It is an 'easy-to-sew' pattern that lived up to its name. After a quick toile, I lowered the bust darts and lengthened the sleeve and bodice by an extra 1.5cm, but other than that, it is made as per the pattern. Contrary to what the label says, there were actually no swear words uttered in the making of this top. 😄 My self-imposed challenge with this project is to use up every last scrap of the Estella Dress. I have a small-ish pile of odd shaped pieces left and am currently considering my options. There's definitely another handstitched heart on its way and possibly a child's shirt or dress. I sewed these last year but need to document. The fabric is Bahamas linen from @eastcoastfabricsau It's quite a rough, heavy linen, and this was originally just a natural colour that I dyed in a cold bath. The pants are vintage Vogue #v1567 which is a Christian Dior pattern and that I purchased for the tunic, however I thought I'd give the pants a go. They were wildly too small and I roughly TDCO-d the pattern to get them to the right size. The invisible zip isn't a perfect colour match in the back seam and annoys me 😩 I lined the pants down to the knee in silk to stabilise them and provide a bit more warmth. The top is #s8839 view b, with just a bias binding around the bottom instead of elastic channels. This outfit always gets positive comments when I wear it, so although I don't feel super enthusiastic about it, it's a keeper.

I spent the weekend in PA for yesterday’s NE BunFest, a gathering of bunny lovers, bunny parents, and bunny supplies and art vendors. Two friends had booths, so I went along as support staff. 😄 I wore my hot-off-the-press Tula Pink bunny dress and love it so much!!! 🩷🐰💜 Well, I am going to dramatically shorten the sleeves, then I will love it even more. The dress is McCalls 8090, but I used Simplicity 8839 sleeves to make 3/4 gathered sleeves. I wore the dress with the sleeves pushed up as far as I could instead 🤣 So that change will happen soon. With the full sleeves, I think it would be a fun top, so that may happen with some other fabric someday. I bought a great pair of bunny earrings from @bubbleandbeam - it’s so hard to find bunny jewelry (or anything) that isn’t too twee, and I know I will get a lot of wear out of these! The drive from RI to PA was 5-6 hours each way (thanks traffic and rain), so I was able to get a ton of knitting done! Day 8 of #memademay2025 for Manda! I love this top so so much. It's @simplicity_creative_group #s8839 and it was a blasty blast to create. It's made from a vintage sheet. I'm not as pleased with the skirt which is the @peppermintmagazine pocket skirt. Don't get me wrong I love the pattern and the fabric, which is the viscose linen noil from @blackbirdfabrics . They just might not go great together? The fabric is maybe a little too drapey for this pattern which makes the pockets kinda flaccid? A blouse made by me, quick snap in the elevator on the way back from lunch yesterday. I made #s8839. I had hell getting it to fit and it's still dodgy. Tried to do a narrow shoulder adjustment and it stuffed up the neck. So did the neck twice, brute forced the sleeves in once I fiddled with shoulder width. Added a pleat at the back for a bit more movement across the back. I didn't add the elastic to the sleeves so now the cuffs get caught on every door handle 😂 Bust darts are too high. I promise I even made a toile,but obviously I have a lot to learn. At least the rayon fabric is cute and busy enough to hide my misfortunes. 🇰🇷⬇️ I used the #mccalls8177 pattern view A. It is my 2nd time using the pattern. I made view C for the first time and I really like the dress fit. So it was not a difficult decision to choose the pattern for my new dress. I didn’t change anything on the pattern but only shortened the length because I wanted to make a mini dress to pair with boots or comfortable loafers. Plus I am small so this is my standard operating procedure when I see something I want to make.😭😭😭 I picked size 8 for the sewing project although I can do both size 6 or 8 normally. The construction is not difficult. It is quite a simple flare dress pattern. Even basics get a sprinkling of #bigsleeveenergy in my wardrobe. The #s8839 by @simplicity_creative_group is a cracker of a pattern. I made View B because it's too hot for pirate sleeves. And I only had 1m of this Michael Black ' Here Again' muslin which is the perfect pairing for this pattern. I opted not to interface the facing pieces because of how light the muslin is and I'm pleased with the outcome. Did not enjoy sewing with the muslin as it frays like crazy so I did french seams to keep all the fray hidden. Pattern comes together really quickly and I love the use of bias binding to case in the elastic at the sleeve. This is the second and definitely not the last time this top will land in my wardrobe! As soon as I seen there was going to be a white party @riuparty I had to plan my outfit. I actually choose both of these patterns as they were perfect samples on the models. I’d had Simplicity 8839 for some time and although I loved the romantic and historical feature sleeves, I found the bodice uninspiring. Then I saw the Freya pattern and thought I could tweak Simplicity 8839 to look a bit more upmarket by altering the proportions of the sleeve puffs, lengthening the bodice and increasing width of the sleeves and hem. I had 2.3m of Liberty Tana Lawn and I widened the flare of the sleeves by about 8cm each side. I widened the hem of the top as much as I could whilst cutting the back and front side by side across the fabric. I put the upper elastic casing lower down (on the cutting line for the short sleeve), moved the centre one up a bit and kept the lower where it was. I’m happy enough with the sleeve length bearing in mind that I was economical with the fabric, but another time I would add 5cm to the sleeve because making the sleeves as puffy as they can be results in the cuffs sitting substantially above the wrists. This is not a difficult top to make. The shape of the sleeves comes from sewing bias binding to the reverse of the sleeve to form a casing and inserting elastic through it. The bodice is very simple (and arguably a bit shapeless). There is nothing tricky or time consuming about it, but it produces quite a dramatic effect. In the future I might try putting this sleeve into other more fitted styles of top or in to button up shirts. The puffy sleeves look more dramatic in a fabric with some structure. The simple bodice relies on drape and two small bust darts for shape. Cotton lawn is a good compromise between these conflicting requirements, but with a different bodice, the sleeves would look great in slightly stiffer fabrics. I’m pretty sure those ‘mamaluke’ sleeves with their Renaissance and Regency undertones will be making repeat appearances in my wardrobe, perhaps with different dresses or shirts attached. #S8839 #libertytanalawn #minervabrandambassador

Day 5 of #MeMadeMay2025: Wearing my #s8839 top to work for the first time (sewn and featured on my grid last month). There's definitely no hiding in this top. In a gorgeous shade of purple and with those sleeves, she's all show and complete impracticality. 😅 But total #dopaminedressing (and sewing). 💜 In terms of my #MMM pledge and how this top might inform future sewing plans ... 🧵 Tops continue to be a gap in my wardrobe, which I need to address. Possibly with slightly less flashy tops that will go with more items. 🙄 🧵 As the days get cooler, it becomes more and more obvious that most of my makes are summer items, even though I sew all year round. I definitely want to look at how to incorporate some more winter #memades into my wardrobe. ❄️ 🧵 This top was sewn from my stash, as per my sewing goals. Once I have sewn down my stash (only a handful of fabrics to go), I plan to be very selective about any new fabrics I buy. Rather than buying a fabric and then working out what I will make with it, I would like to try deciding what I want to make/need in my wardrobe and then choosing a suitable fabric. Day 22 of #MeMadeMay2025 : I intended to post each #memade only once this month, but I'm making an exception for this Simplicity 8839 top. 💜 Last week, I wore this RTW dress with my short-sleeved version of #s8839, and @justjulielou and @sewstunning wondered if it might work with this purple version. I think I might like it even better. 😊 As impractical and faffy as these sleeves are, I do love them.
