This is the follow-up to my last "toile" vest/slipover post - here is the actual version made from a beautiful light gray woven wool with burnout horizontal lines. To this version I added the side button closure. I started with the "Sleeveless Scarf Blouse" pattern by Natsuno Hiraiwa in ShapeShape - obviously there is no scarf and it's not a blouse, so I made some significant modifications. So here they are! My first ever pair of MeMade jeans. I still can’t quite believe I am capable of making jeans, but the evidence speaks for itself. They are not perfect - in fact I made a fairly fundamental error in these - but I still love them and feel very proud. Corduroy. A very versatile fabric. So versatile to make clothes from, like jackets and skirts etc. Well I thought I’d give making slim jeans out of them. With @simplicity_creative_group #s8516 now being my go to jeans pattern, this was really great to try. This dark brown corduroy I bought from @minervadotcom had just enough stretch to cut size 12 like my denim pair. I made jeans... Simplicity 8516 by Mimi G. I like this pattern because the curvy fit option means I don't have to do my usual Ample Arse adjustment. I still do a *lot* of dart manipulation on the back yoke and waistband to bring the CB in to my back waist. I wore last year's pair for a week to get a feel for what I needed to change for a new pair. I cut a size smaller, forgetting I had already reduced the pattern half a size after the previous pair. To add half a size I sewed a narrower seam allowance on the outside leg. I need a couple crotch adjustments too but these are generally a beaut fit. When retail stores reopen in Melbourne hopefully I'll still have the motivation to buy more denim and make another pair. #s8516 @mimigstyle

My most recent make is another Bowery sweatshirt by @sewingandthecity This is still one of my favorite patterns!😍 I used @minervadotcom ‘s core range light ponte as my main fabric and had just enough scraps of a red stretchy knit of unknown content from my stash to make the neckband, cuffs and hem band (you can’t see the hem band because I tucked it in, but it’s there lol). Time for a Toaster! I have made 4 Toasters as gifts, but never the classic Version 1 for myself. I had this cozy French terry from @drygoodsdesign that I used for my mom's #toastersweater, and had just enough left for a front, back and collar. It’s MMM Day 3 and it’s the first day I felt like taking a photo lol But I’m happy to report that I’ve successfully worn something I made for each day so far. On Day 1 I wore me-made underwear. On Day 2 I wore a me-made sweater and today my pants are me-made. Pattern is @mimigstyle for Simplicity 8516. Top is thrifted RTW. I love it. It makes me happy and for some reason my students always compliment me on the fancy zipper pull (swipe to see). It says TH which I now realize stands for Tommy Hilfiger 😂 but anyway it’s a poly/rayon blend that unfortunately is majorly prone to pilling. I have a fabric shaver but there’s only so many times you can shave the fabric before it eventually becomes too thin. This is my second Pivoine blouse, and I love everything about the shape and drape of it, especially in this lovely Cotton+Steel viscose found at @esthersfabrics - and the little print works with just about everything. Day 19 | 31 - This was my first Archer (I've made two others since), and it's quite cozy in flannel. This one, in addition to being quite wrinkled, is full of beginner mistakes (notice my rolled sleeves to hide the wonky cuffs 😂haha). I purchased the fabric from Joanns and even though it seemed nice and heavy at the store, one wash and most of its fluffiness was gone. So I guess it's not the best dead-of-winter flannel shirt. Jeans are from the Mimi G pattern (for Simplicity). I used this pattern to make my very first pair of jeans and I can't say enough about the YouTube tutorial by MimiG - if you're thinking you can't make jeans, just watch her videos on this pattern. What wonderful light in the snow! We got almost a foot over the weekend - very exciting here in the PNW. So I jumped on the vest train. This is a bit of a wearable toile. I started with the "Sleeveless Scarf Blouse" pattern by Natsuno Hiraiwa in ShapeShape - her pattern includes a little built-in scarf and a lovely side button closure, but what I really liked was this silhouette as an outwear pullover vest (I see people refer to this also as a "slipover") and the angled darts on the front and back to add a little more fit. (Tried to lighten second photo to show those darts). Since I was using this heavy wool-linen remnant, I didn't need the closure. For my "real" version I have a woven flannel wool in which I will use the side buttons. Can't wait to sew that up - a fast and easy pattern too! A #memademay update. First up was a #sewingfrankie from @tillybuttons I liked it so much I wore another Frankie tee the next day, this time with my #atenasjacket @itchtostitch The sun came out again so I wore this striped tee which is hacked from the coco top The white and black top is also a hacked coco but this was not a winner - the neckline is too wide and I was uncomfortable all day long. I need to look at what I can do on this. A repeat wear of the #selmatop @sinclairpatterns because I felt good in it last week so it’s back in rotation. Finally a re-wear of the #melodydolman shirt @lovenotions with my hacked #s8516 @simplicitymccallsuk jeans which I was pleasantly surprised still fit me. I felt fantastic in this outfit, it was cool (on a very hot day) and comfortable but I felt put together. I’ve been working on another Melody and am looking forward to finishing and wearing that. DENIM. JEANS 🤯 Like real denim jeans came from these hands. That fit!! I kid you not when I tell you that I own only 4 pairs of jeans still in heavy rotation for years. I’ve been no stranger to attempting to make jeans, especially a @mimigstyle pattern. I bought @simplicity_creative_group #s8516 a couple of years ago and I almost forgot I had it once I started searching for a pattern to make a new pair. I’ve been tempted by a couple of popular indie pattern companies and almost caved until I realised what I had. What really stands out for me is that this pattern comes in 3 different fits depending on how you like to wear yours. They are slim, average and curvy. On my first go, I went for a curvy due to my hips and cut a size 14. It wasn’t terrible but I had to make a lot of changes to make it at least wearable. This time round now that I’ve gained more experience with making trousers, I made the following adjustments: - Sized down to a 12 - Chose the Slim view - Omitted the front pockets - Shortened the hem by 4.5” - Tapered the leg by 3/8” - I did have a little gaping in the waistband in this version that I fixed in my next pair by pinching out the excess and marking it on the pattern Here I’ve paired this with another brilliant basic t-shirt called the Hermann Top by @sewingmachina which I will go into more detail in another post! #simplicitypatterns #mimigpatterns #sewingpatterns #sewingjeans #sewistsofinstagram #indiepatterns #sewingmachinahermann #memadewardrobe #denimjeans #slowfashion #slowsewing #diyfashion #fauxlocs

Planning my #makenine2022 around patterns I already own and fabrics already in my stash! I had a little project planning paralysis so this was a good exercise and I'm really excited now. 1. Dress with sleeves based on #s8292 with basic bodice and #charmcircleskirt made out of @ikea duvet cover I got in the as is section. 2. Jeans from some @joann_stores denim, thinking about using #s8516 but may hold out until @helens__closet releases their new jeans pattern. 👀 3. Dress that is a hacked version of #m7920 with set in sleeves using @dearstellafab leaf print cotton. 4. Black shorts hacked from #m7626 and made with a cotton twill from @fabricdotcom 5. A cotton petticoat with #s8456 to wear with all my dresses and skirts! 6. @joann_stores Rainbow cotton gauze #winslowculottes inspired by the pair @ayellowkitchen made. 7. #m7952 but with a zipper in the back instead of buttons to make it more comfortable. Gonna use this adorable tablecloth I got on eBay because I was inspired by the Luana apron dress @less.thansimple made with it and tracked it down immediately. 8. #b6390 in the same denim as the jeans. Will be perfect for layering with dresses as it is a cropped style jacket. 9. A dress based on #s9294 / #b6556 but with a different neckline for my incredible @dearstellafab Sew Mischievous fabric. So that’s the first week of #MeMadeMay2022 done and here’s a quick roundup of my outfits, which I’ve been posting up in stories. My pledge included wearing things I don’t wear very often to try to find ways to love them again. Day 1 was a pub lunch which called for my favourite dress, the #VienneDress from @sizemesewing in fabric from @bobbins_and_buttons Day 2 was a #SewingCoco from @tillybuttons in quilted fabric from @fox_and_bee_design Day 3 was the start of the working (from home) week so I started choosing items I wear less. This is a #SewingStevie from @tillybuttons, I used to wear it to work a lot but haven’t really worn it to WFH but it was perfectly comfortable and I shall wear it again for sure. Day 4 was the #CanyonCardigan from @lovenotions The outcome here is that I’m going to add a fastening of some sort to bring it in at the waist. The fabric was from @fabricatemirfield and you can’t see in the photo but it’s a waffle texture with sparkles ✨ Day 5 is another #SewingCoco but in t-shirt form in fabric from @craftysewandso I think the issue here is that it’s a summery colour and spring is only just with us - I’ll wear it much more in spring and summer. Day 14 | 31 - Casual day today painting and cleaning in my cozy short sleeve Linden. Had to make it short sleeve in order to eek out the pattern pieces from this amazing French Terry. Day 2 | 31 - never was a sweater so easily “knit”… for some reason I never really recognized that one could purchase yardage of a knit that looked like a sweater knit, and cut it out just like a sweatshirt, and voila, instant sweater! That is the story here - this in the Linden “sweatshirt” made from an Italian wool blend that I purchased from @moodfabrics . Since it would be a little tricky to make the bindings with such a loose weave, I found a matching gray ribbing to add to cuffs, waist and collar. Here with black denim jeans made using the Mimi G pattern. Day 3 | 31 - Lunch break walk with the hubby today gave me a lucky chance to have a photographer for Me Made May Day 3. Breezy and colder today so back to long sleeves, jacket and 🧣! This jacket is made using home dec fabric with a very loose weave and its primarily role was to be a wearable toile, so I made it fast and unlined. I found the style, color and weight fit really well into my wardrobe. If you saw one of my recent stories, you'll know I decided to replace the collar as I initially didn't treat the inner raw edges properly when I cut back the collar curves, so it was fraying from the inside out. Hopefully this version will hold better. The top under is a new make - a long sleeve v-neck Renfrew in the softest of cottons in a dark cornflower blue color. This is a winter top that I made last year...Vogue pattern, #V7799, view B. I loved the look on the pattern cover - it's a close-fitting top with a center front seam (which I really like) and a collar that extends from the bodice piece, which has a collar facing. Perhaps my fabric is a bit too drapey, but I'm constantly pulling back the collar so that the facing edges don't show. I suppose that could also mean my shoulder seams are too far forward? I really like this heathered blue color and it's super warm - 100% merino wool jersey. (I wish I could remember where I ordered it!). I’ve already amended the pattern to have pockets now, but I’m wondering if I need to do something with the pairs I already made; I could add a patch pocket on the bum for my phone?
