For Me Made Day - Day 12, I wanted to share these adorable kitchen things I’ve been making this week! I used Simplicity 9303 to make the potholders and oven mitts, though I used self-made binding and deviated from the pattern instructions when attaching it. As this is my first time making potholders, I watched several YouTube videos on making potholders with binding before attempting it, and experimented with a few different techniques along the way. I used triple layer padding: two layers of cotton batting and one of heat-resistant batting featuring a silver foil like layer. The strawberry set I made for myself; the coffee and pastries set I made for my adult kiddo who loves to cook (and who was the inspiration for this entire project). I used my set as the guinea pig; you can tell because the other set looks more polished. The apron is also for my kid, and is self-drafted with design help from them (they picked the fabric, and it was their idea to add the loops to hang spatulas/spoons! Genius!!). The straps are 1-1/4” wide and are adjustable - see picture showing the casing I created along the edges of the armholes. I could have simply hemmed the edges but as long as I was fully immersed in the world of binding, I went ahead and added the blue binding along the edges as you can see. It was challenging to work without a pattern, but overall I had so much fun making this and I love how it turned out! I have made aprons before, but it’s funny that I’m only now learning to make potholders and oven mitts after 4+ years of incessant sewing experience. I’ve purchased several kitchen accessory patterns over the years, but I could never seem to motivate myself to make any, not when there are so many beautiful dress patterns demanding my attention!
