Ugh, I caught a nasty cold, and it derailed my #memademay. Oh well. Seems like I’m in good company. I did just finish this sweet dress for my daughter to wear to my SIL’s wedding in a couple of weeks. This is a McCalls #m7558 in a really nice linen/rayon blend from @boltfabricpdx. If you know me IRL, you probably know I set a goal to master buttonholes this year, and also that l’ve been terrified of them since high school, when I ruined a project at the last step with a botched buttonhole. Yes, I have been afraid of buttonholes for about 20 years... But no more! Behold! Three functional *not botched* buttonholes! Success! Do I feel silly for fearing buttonholes for 20 years? Honestly, no. It’s stressful to maybe ruin a project at the very end just because you botch a buttonhole. I stand behind the legitimacy of my fear, but I will no longer let it control me. Anyway, that was dramatic. And I’m not even done. This was my first time using a pattern from a big company, and although it turned out quite nice in the end, I found the instructions to be confusing, incomplete, and sometimes just wrong. Supposedly, this is a beginner pattern. That might be true with better and more thorough instructions (although the fully lined bodice and button placket make me skeptical). As is, the pattern doesn’t even state when and how to finish and press seams... Luckily, I was able to use all the great skills I’ve gained with excellent indie patterns to produce a lovely product in the end. This 1st day of school look turned out to be sooooooooo cute! I dug through my patterns to find a dress that I could modify into an easy breezy top. I settled on McCall's #M7558 and chose to forgo the full button down back and put in a single button/elastic closure at the neck. To turn it into a tunic, I kept only the main part of the skirt and skipped the thick bottom ruffle. I love that the bodice is fully lined! it's something I haven't done much of in my other makes, and I'm kind of obsessed with it (especially since it eliminates carefully placing in bias tape). The fabric is from a recent trip to Hobby Lobby. The soft mustard gauze was 40% off from their newly released Fall selection. The stripes were 30% off and tucked away on the quilting selection (which I usually ignore because so much of it isn't as fun... boy was I wrong). This top can easily be made with just a little bit of fabric from your stash too... so I'm finding myself eyeing a few more combinations already! I think I want to add a long sleeve and shoulder ruffle next 🤩 Let me know what you think and if you've found joy in modifying patterns. I love this IG sewing community so much. Susie's new favorite dress! Made from quilting cotton (print) and cotton voile (solid). Made using McCall's 7558, view D with only one ruffle on the sleeve. Super simple Sew and I like that the bodice is lined, which I find preferable to bias bindings and facings. If you look closely at the buttonholes on the back, you can see that I made each in a different color thread so they would blend in with the fabric.
