Blue bold print knit dress . This was another fabric that I bought on spec - I was pretty sure I wanted to make some kind of knit dress with it, but didn’t necessarily have a pattern in mind. (Side note: the fabric is 100% polyester, and I’ve since gone off polyester for dresses… for anything, really.) . And oh, by the way - the fabric came in two colourways. And I wanted both of them. . I did end up buying both, and in the end I made identical maxi dresses, the only difference being that one has 3/4 length sleeves instead of full-length sleeves. After making practice pants for my ballroom dance lessons, a natural next step was to make a practice dress! So here it is! 💃 It was quite an undertaking really, primarily because there are no proper readily made patterns for such dresses, at least I didn’t find any in the vast universe of sewing patterns 😁 So what to do? 🧐 I bought 3 meters of this black lightweight polyamide fabric that stretches like crazy and 1 meter of stretchy lace fabric which was meant for sleeves and the back (swipe ➡️). And then calculation started. So I took basic stretch shirt pattern by #mccallspatterns #m7122 , it worked ok for sleeves design but was badly too wide around waist, so had to be adjusted. Then I inserted a shiny waistband cut out of my previous pants leftover fabric. And skirt was made from scratch. I drew a basic skirt block from my waist and hips measurements by adding flare to the bottom of the skirt. The idea was to stitch 6 of these identical blocks together to make a complete skirt. But after stitching few pattern pieces together I decided that the flare was not sufficient, so I inserted triangles of fabric at the lower part of the skirt in between all 6 main pattern pieces to make the skirt flare more dramatic 😀 After trying the dress out for several times I think that next time I should add a bit more width from hips down for even more comfortable movement. But it still works quite well! I am really happy how this #frankenpattern worked this time for this dress! It is a good first try 👍 I may need to make few more similar dresses so that I could change them all the time! 🥳 The dress is stitched completely on the overlocker, I adjusted differential setting for seams to be more stretchy, the hem is also finished with a simple overlocker seam.

I keep meaning to photo this every time I wear it before it starts to fall to pieces. It’s my third summer wearing it and I often wear it in summer. It’s made from rayon knit using #mccalls7122 and it’s the most comfortable easy to wear dress I own (apart from the other version I made with blue animal print - swipe left). It’s more comfortable than a t-shirt and prettier, plus no ironing required.
