Thinking of my sewing plans for 2024: it’s going to be a year dedicated to self-care, reflection, and healing. Life threw its challenges at me in 2023, battling health issues, loss, and distance. So this year, I'm giving myself the gift of time – time to heal, perhaps embark on some home renovations, and of course keep the connection with my craft, albeit a little quieter this year. Sewing is my sanctuary, and it’s certainly provided a welcome escape for me this past year.   I have therefore crafted my #MakeNine2024 challenge to sew some items that have been in the pipeline for quite some time.  If I don’t get them done, I’m not going to stress. It’s all about the journey for me this year. 2024 will see me in a chapter of regrouping, reassessing, focussing on personal growth, … and the gentle hum of my sewing machine. 🪡✨   On my list for 2024 are:   1. A focus on creativity: During the first weekend of black history month we went to the National Cathedral for a Black history month concert (thank you @nerd9113 for putting us on), and made some cool T shirts to commentate the month ( and year!). “Hey black child” was and remains one of my favorite children’s poem. I brought the little guy the book many years ago and now he can wear the text and inspire others. With so much pink around at the moment for the Barbie Movie, I couldn’t resist making a pink jacket - and here it is! The pattern is the #smittenjacket by @patternemporium_kate and this is the second version of this pattern that I’ve made. This time I made the regular cropped version with straight sleeves and buttoned cuffs. The style is very similar to a Jean Jacket, but I omitted the pocket flaps and focused on lots of top stitching. The fabric is a lovely medium weight linen fabric, that was really nice to work with and came from @trurofabrics recently. The blue floral top worn underneath is the #fieldofdreamstop by @patternemporium_kate and the floral viscose fabric was again from @trurofabrics Oh yes!! I also got photobombed by the cat and the dog - and at the time, didn’t even realise!😉

Finished! Not perfect but done. ✔️ On the left is the @revolve Webster Trench, worn recently by @taylorswift , That was the #sewinginspiration for the jacket I made on the right. I’m having fun sewing my way through Taylor Swift’s wardrobe. 😊 I extended the length of the cropped jacket pattern that was the jumping off point for this project. I added a back overlapped vent so I can walk in this and also in-seam pockets at the front. I also used snaps rather than buttons. This has become my favourite work outfit, I’m not someone who feels ‘put together’ often, but when I do, I’m usually wearing a #zadiejumpsuit. Smitten Jacket #2 This viral @patternemporium_kate #pesmittenjacket is so versatile I literally could make 2-3 more with fabric from my #stash #2023fabricweightlosschallenge . This Smitten is the exact same length as my blue linen version with 5 cm taken off the hips. Notice the difference a fine wale corduroy makes to the drape and structure of the jacket. Much stiffer than the exact same jacket in linen, more denim jacket ‘like’, but a perfect jacket to grab for a night out anywhere. The corduroy was purchased from @sitkafabrics in 🇨🇦 last year and the colour is jet black. The corduroy is so fine, you don’t know it’s corduroy until you are very, very close. Almost looks like velvet….. oooooo a velvet Smitten, now that’s an idea 💡I might have enough of the fabric left for a matching skirt😍. I really fussed over the button selection and had a set in my stash that were vintage and beautiful but not as good as these hammered metal beauties from @fabricland.canada . My latest make is the #smittenjacket by @patternemporium_kate. There’s loads of options to this jacket, but I chose the regular length (ultra) cropped version, with bishop sleeves, no pocket flaps and a gathered waistband. I sometimes need to make a full bust adjustment and this pattern already had optional pattern prices to accommodate this, but I stuck with the regular bust sizing and it was fine. Lots of lovely detailing with seams on this jacket and a really great fit, which came up to size without any adjustments for me. I chose a white lightweight cotton drill fabric with a slight stretch from @trurofabrics and the mother of pearl buttons also came from there as well. The Smitten Jacket is also worn with my #fieldofdreamstop by @patternemporium_kate (from my previous post) and the blue floral viscose fabric was also purchased from @trurofabrics I’m going to make this again and and try out a linen version with the straight sleeves and fitted wristband on the next one. #wendypoolesews

Me Made May Day 15 and todays make is the Smitten Jacket pattern by @patternemporium_kate that I made last summer. I made the cropped version with the gathered cuffs and gathered back lower band. It’s actually turned out to be a really useful little jacket, that I wore quite a lot last summer, especially when you just want something to cover your shoulders and I also wore it a lot with sleeveless dresses. 👗I’m also wearing it with my latest #fieldofdreamsdress again by @patternemporium_kate and the details of that are in a previous post. I have been focused on sewing in my best colours. I had my colours done in the 80s and I’m a Spring, but today’s Spring is broken out into 3 palettes. I’m not sure what type of spring I am - but I know this Easter egg blue is great on me. When I saw this blue stretch #denim at @gkfashionfabrics I knew this had to be another @patternemporium_kate #pesmittenjacket . In fact, it’s my third! It’s just so easy to pop my adjusted patterns out of the little manila envelope I store it in, cut the jacket and know it’s gonna fit perfectly. 🔥SMITTEN CROPPED JACKET🔥 —-Sneak Peek Week!—- I wanted a lightweight denim jacket for ages! I wanted something I can throw on one of my many PE dresses, or over a top and my Vacation Vibes, to have as an extra layer, to be comfortable and look put together. I knew that buying one is not going to work for me because of my larger biceps. A jacket in a size that I can fit my arms in will be way too big on the rest of my torso. I even toyed with the idea of hacking the All In shirt to make it, but felt that it will look like a denim shirt, not a jacket. And then Kate designed my dream jacket! The ultra cropped length means that the jacket fits perfectly over my fit and flare dresses and high waisted wide trousers. I decided to top-stitch everywhere with too yellow lines to give my jacket a more denim-like look and chose small brass buttons. Switching constantly between the top-stitching thread and the normal white sewing thread was a bit of a pain but the finished result is so worth it! The fabric is a gorgeous lightweight drapy tencel chambray that kept shifting during cutting and sewing but feels so lovely one. I wore my Smitten Jacket every day since I made it. I love it! I made the cutest ultra cropped jacket! ♥️ I get the wobbles if I have to attach a collar 😂 but the instructions on the #PEsmittenJacket by @PatternEmporium_Kate made this a breeze. The pattern can be ultra cropped or waist length with the option of a button up front and button up cuff. The design is meant for fabrics in linen, rayon, tencel, lawn etc. Check out the tag for an amazing variety. The ultra cropped looks super cute with maxi dresses and is a handy jacket for cooler summer days. I’d love this jacket in a print. I liked this pattern in many ways: -length and bust options; -excellent instructions that are not too verbose; -clear photos accompanying the text that has different patterned fabrics to highlight the pieces; -black lines on the photos that show the stitch lines; and -the instructions can be downloaded to iBooks with a how to do this. Sizing: max bust 135/139 cms; 53 1/4”- 54 3/4”. The Smitten Jacket in rayon. French seamed. I did not enjoy sewing this, and really it sat in my Meh pile for two weeks. I confess I find Pattern Emporium patterns a little overwhelming with so many options. I tried without the elastic at the back -unpicked it. With elastic all the way around- unpicked it. Gaa-aa! In the end I decided on just elastic at the back. Sorry if I just stressed you but just being real here. I styled it with my new linen Style Arc Bennet pants. I love love love this skirt 🤍 This is toile #2 and the fit is perfect 👌 I did a sway back adjustment, added more gathers, removed pockets, lengthened slightly and made the waistband slightly thinner. I spent the weekend with an incredibly talented group of women, doing what we love best - sewing ☺️ This skirt was one of my projects and I love it. The pattern is by @bygraciesteel and it's the #gsflirtskirt, I added a tier, put an invisible zip down the center back and used a hook and bar to fasten the waistband. 🔥SMITTEN CROPPED JACKET🔥 —-Sneak Peek Week!—- I wanted a lightweight denim jacket for ages! I wanted something I can throw on one of my many PE dresses, or over a top and my Vacation Vibes, to have as an extra layer, to be comfortable and look put together. I knew that buying one is not going to work for me because of my larger biceps. A jacket in a size that I can fit my arms in will be way too big on the rest of my torso. I even toyed with the idea of hacking the All In shirt to make it, but felt that it will look like a denim shirt, not a jacket. And then Kate designed my dream jacket! The ultra cropped length means that the jacket fits perfectly over my fit and flare dresses and high waisted wide trousers. I decided to top-stitch everywhere with too yellow lines to give my jacket a more denim-like look and chose small brass buttons. Switching constantly between the top-stitching thread and the normal white sewing thread was a bit of a pain but the finished result is so worth it! The fabric is a gorgeous lightweight drapy tencel chambray that kept shifting during cutting and sewing but feels so lovely one. I wore my Smitten Jacket every day since I made it. I love it! Over the weekend I completed my second @patternemporium_kate #pesmittencroppedjacket 😊 This version is ultra cropped (but I lengthened it by 1.5cm and tapered it by 1cm at the side seams), full bust adjustment, traditional hem band, shirt sleeve with button up cuff and pockets. I had pocket flaps cut out but I got distracted by my true crime podcast and forgot to add them 🤭 AND I put the buttonholes on the wrong side 😅 So maybe just music next time. My fabric was a remnant I picked up from a quilting shop for about $15, and it has the most beautiful metallic fibre woven into it, it's hard to capture with photos but it's gorgeous. Love, love, love 😊

I made this #pesmittencroppedjacket last year for a speaking engagement I had and have never shared it. As I was trying to style this thrifted dress, I thought how a leather jacket would be nice to make the dress a little less sweet. Then I remembered this corduroy jacket and thought it was just the thing. I don't remember any of the details from this make, but @patternemporium_kate patterns are pretty straightforward and easy to size, etc. I have still not sewn in any of the button holes 🤭, but I never wear jackets buttoned anyway. Heh.

I told him to give me his best catalogue modelling vibes and I think he nailed it 😉🤩 Joe is wearing the #ilfordjacket by @fridaypatterncompany that I made him for his birthday in January (details a bit further back on my grid) with his new #jedediahpants from @threadtheorydesigns. They were made in a lovely stretch cotton drill from @spotlightstores - I love this fabric! I made the leg of the pants straighter and wider by gradually grading out to the largest size from the hip to the hem. Apart from that I didn’t make any other alterations. I’m wearing previously documented makes - #smittenjacket by @patternemporium_kate in stretch denim from @spotlightstores and #sewliberatedchanterellepants from @sewliberated in black cotton/linen blend from @backstreetbargains. My tee shirt is a new make this month and is my second #florenceboxytee tee from @sizemesewing made in a gorgeous drapey viscose knit that was an end of roll from @thefabricwarehousewgtn a couple of years ago. I love this pattern! I like to have three styles of basic tee on my wardrobe, boxy, slightly fitted short sleeve and slightly fitted long sleeve - this will now be my go to boxy tee, I don’t need to look any further! Second attempt at the #smittenjacket. This time I made it in the cropped tall version. I’m by no means tall, but I wanted it a little bit longer. Was able to make this one much neater after learning lessons from the first time around. Covering the buttons with is fabric was a royal PITA because of the tendency to fray. Starched it pretty heavily and managed to make it work but would not attempt again with this fabric.

@patternemporium_kate #smittenjacket I finished my jacket this weekend, well, I think I have. I'm considering shortening and maybe taking out some volume from the sleeves. It was fairly simple to make. I made a few normal fit adjustments and I only had a few issues due to not marking my notches properly. The most annoying thing was after leaving the project for some time and then coming back to it, I couldn't find what the seam allowance was. 🤦‍♀️ I made the regular cropped length and elastic cuff sleeves. My fabric was possibly a garbardine fabric from my stash and melted under my iron, making it really tricky to have neat seams. Keep an eye out for my next video to hear more about it. I've made a iacket! Never expected to say those words 😁 And I'm pretty chuffed with it. I hacked the pattern to include small in-seam pockets that double up to be slip-in pockets on the inside. I also combined the gathered sleeves with a cuff (pattern has options for gathered sleeve with elasticated cuff or slim sleeves with traditional buttoned cuff). I have larger than average biceps so, rather than doing a full bicep adjustment, I decided to start with the gathered sleeve which is wider at the bicep and intended to slim it down through it's length to standard cuffs. Once I saw the wide sleeve I liked the shape, it's just a bit different, but knew I didn't want elasticated cuffs so I put a few pleats in to make it small enough to fit a cuff. The fabric is gorgeously soft stretch denim and really lovely to work with. This is the @patternemporium_kate #smittenjacket paired here with the @lovenotions #ariabuttondowndress I made the dress last year but didn't have enough fabric for the sleeves as I had to cut out another back bodice to do a round shoulder adjustment. Then in January, @stitchhemsew brought more of this fabric for a swaps table and I snapped it up planning to add sleeves to my dress. Thanks Clare!!!! However, I remembered that I had bought this fab pattern on NYE and thought it would be the perfect jacket to go over the dress instead of sleeves! I made the Ultra Cropped Regular length in a size 14. I used the elasticated hem and sleeves and didn't add pockets or buttons. This pattern has sooooo many variations and the instructions are more detailed than anything I have ever seen before!!! Very good value especially as I bought it on sale! I can't wait to make one up in denim asap!!! #memademay day 28 and I think I might miss being so intentional about wearing my memades. The majority of my wardrobe - probably 75% - is me made but when you work from home it’s easy to throw on sweatpants and not bother with getting dressed properly unless going out. Me Made May has reminded me that I feel much better when I put a bit more thought into my outfit and I haven’t once felt any less comfortable than if I had opted for those sweatpants. Disclaimer - I love a comfy sweatpants, no shade to anyone who lived in them. @patternemporium_kate #smittenjacket I altered the sleeves on my Smitten Jacket that I made late last year. They were very oversized on me and too long. I've included a before photo at the end. I removed the sleeve cuff and cut around 2 inches off the width of the sleeve, tapered to the wrist and an inch off the length. I could have removed a little more off the length. I also took a lot out of the elastic and cuff. I think it look a lot better now. I am wearing it with my incomplete Nell dress by Tilly and the Buttons, which is also up for alterations. Well I found another old @bluebomberswpg jersey, this time one my son had when he was in his early teens. The Winnipeg Blue Bomber branding has changed, so I had the opportunity to do something quite different from my first jacket ( last picture). My first jacket was also in softshell, which is too heavy for summer games, I wanted something lighter. I had some deep navy organic cotton stretch twill (6 oz) from @corefabrics in my stash so I paired that fabric with the @patternemporium_kate #smittenjacket pattern. I had made this pattern twice before, but I made a couple more tweaks to the fit of the shoulders and now it’s pretty near perfect. I cut up the mesh jersey and tried to use almost all the numbers and logos. I serged around the edges of the pieces and then used my sewing machine to sew them to the front and back before I put the jacket together. I even used the inside tags and will feature that in my stories. I’m in ❤️ with this #make. Perfect weight, different look from my first jacket and likely to get the same attention at games my first one does. #memademay day 24. I missed yesterday but I’m making up for it today with a Twofer! Thanks to @joemunro5 for being a good sport, even though he hates the camera! I told him to give me his best catalogue modelling vibes and I think he nailed it 😉🤩 Joe is wearing the #ilfordjacket by @fridaypatterncompany that I made him for his birthday in January (details a bit further back on my grid) with his new #jedediahpants from @threadtheorydesigns. They were made in a lovely stretch cotton drill from @spotlightstores - I love this fabric! I made the leg of the pants straighter and wider by gradually grading out to the largest size from the hip to the hem. Apart from that I didn’t make any other alterations. I’m wearing previously documented makes - #smittenjacket by @patternemporium_kate in stretch denim from @spotlightstores and #sewliberatedchanterellepants from @sewliberated in black cotton/linen blend from @backstreetbargains. My tee shirt is a new make this month and is my second #florenceboxytee tee from @sizemesewing made in a gorgeous drapey viscose knit that was an end of roll from @thefabricwarehousewgtn a couple of years ago. I love this pattern! I like to have three styles of basic tee on my wardrobe, boxy, slightly fitted short sleeve and slightly fitted long sleeve - this will now be my go to boxy tee, I don’t need to look any further! My latest make is the #smittenjacket by @patternemporium_kate. There’s loads of options to this jacket, but I chose the regular length (ultra) cropped version, with bishop sleeves, no pocket flaps and a gathered waistband. I sometimes need to make a full bust adjustment and this pattern already had optional pattern prices to accommodate this, but I stuck with the regular bust sizing and it was fine. Lots of lovely detailing with seams on this jacket and a really great fit, which came up to size without any adjustments for me. I chose a white lightweight cotton drill fabric with a slight stretch from @trurofabrics and the mother of pearl buttons also came from there as well. The Smitten Jacket is also worn with my #fieldofdreamstop by @patternemporium_kate (from my previous post) and the blue floral viscose fabric was also purchased from @trurofabrics I’m going to make this again and and try out a linen version with the straight sleeves and fitted wristband on the next one. #wendypoolesews

Finally finished these navy needlecord trousers yesterday using Simplicity 1887. I’ve hacked the pattern quite a bit, adding width to the legs and altering the back crotch depth. Still not perfect and the pattern needs some more changes to get the fit right for me. The jacket was made from the Smitten Jacket pattern, one of my favourite jacket patterns, from Pattern Emporium. With so much pink around at the moment for the Barbie Movie, I couldn’t resist making a pink jacket - and here it is! The pattern is the #smittenjacket by @patternemporium_kate and this is the second version of this pattern that I’ve made. This time I made the regular cropped version with straight sleeves and buttoned cuffs. The style is very similar to a Jean Jacket, but I omitted the pocket flaps and focused on lots of top stitching. The fabric is a lovely medium weight linen fabric, that was really nice to work with and came from @trurofabrics recently. The blue floral top worn underneath is the #fieldofdreamstop by @patternemporium_kate and the floral viscose fabric was again from @trurofabrics Oh yes!! I also got photobombed by the cat and the dog - and at the time, didn’t even realise!😉

Me Made May Day 15 and todays make is the Smitten Jacket pattern by @patternemporium_kate that I made last summer. I made the cropped version with the gathered cuffs and gathered back lower band. A wearable toile of @patternemporium_kate Smitten Crop Jacket. (I’ve nearly finished my second iteration as well!) A versatile jacket tailored for woven fabrics and pays homage to the timeless denim jacket design. Although rather time consuming, the topstitching detail was so satisfying to sew. I used a topstitching thread and two different feet to achieve the neat rows. The blind hem foot for the narrow topstitch and then the 1/4” foot for the wider topstitch. At last I’ve had time to finish my PE Smitten Cropped Jacket!!! Material is Buzoku Cotton Duck - Bee Parade from Spotlight. Size 10, cropped/regular, only alteration was to shorten sleeves by 1cm: Decorative pocket flaps (probably didn’t need them as they are lost in the pattern!!!). We keep native stingless bees, and this bee pattern is similar in shape to our bees 💕💕. This is the @patternemporium_kate #smittencroppedjacket ❤️ There is a lot I loved about this pattern. The instructions were AMAZING- so detailed and included so many ideas and options, I’ve never seen instructions like it! I went for the standard cropped jacket with the plain sleeves. What I also loved was that the pattern includes full bust adjustment pieces too- what a luxury! The advice was that if you measure x2 sizes bigger bust to waist then you can get away without an FBA as it’s quite a roomy pattern and I didn’t make any adjustments in accordance with that and it fits really well. I cut a straight size 10. I made this with a cotton mix Anna Manolatos fabric from @spotlightstores , it is quite thin so it makes this a kind of shirt-jacket hybrid. That’s why I decided to pop in a zip to make it more jacket-like.
