Took my new top out to the park yesterday. It's a @patternemporium_kate Chasing Butterflies batwing top made in the most gorgeous viscose jersey from @1stforfabrics. I love these colours! The top is super quick to sew up. I made one in a stretch velvet for Xmas and made this in the same size, not clocking that the viscose jersey is much more stretchy. Thanks ladies 🥰 The fabric is the most divine white/sliver glitter jersey. I picked it up at the Stitch Festival earlier in the year from @montreuxfabrics. It was so nice to work with and has beautiful drape. 🧵 I made the crew neck version with a banded hemline in length 1. I cut a size 12 grading to a 14 adding about 1.5” to the length of the bodice. Of course the neckline is bound with @thespeckyseamstress binding. I have a tutorial on how to do this on my YouTube channel! Well, I thought that the top was so great, I actually made three tops during the testing. Chilly UK forecasts for the next week or so sent me to my stash at the weekend for this incredible quilted jersey-backed wool-mix knit originally from @guthrieghani I’d seen a gorgeously slouchy RTW sweater online at Jigsaw in this colour and when I saw the Chasing Butterflies top #pechasingbutterflies by @patternemporium_kate it seemed to be the perfect starting point for a cosy jumper. Intended for lighter weight fabrics, one or two adjustments were needed to suit this hefty fabric but I was really surprised at how well it translated; even the neckband (cut just a few mm deeper than drafted) worked out despite a few protestations from my overlocker🫣😬 Fabric constraints meant a centre back seam was needed but I don’t mind that really; only had 1.5m but was determined to have enough for the separate cowl which Kate helpfully gives some measurements for - this one is shorter than suggested but given how chunky the fabric is it works well. The main change I made was to separate the lower section of the sleeve. In the pattern directions Kate explains that the one-piece front & backs should be cut on the cross-grain, so that the lower sleeve can benefit from the greatest stretch going around the arms. The stripes on my fabric ran horizontally and I wanted to keep that through the main body. By cutting the lower sleeve section separately I could rotate it 90 degrees, have the stretch running as intended and enjoy the contrast of stripe direction as a bonus🙂 Other concessions to the fabric weight were to add a cm or so to the width of the lower sleeve for extra wearing ease, and a bit extra to the circumference of the hem band which I now regret. Sometimes you just need a quick sew; and since I’m procrastinating finishing my Chanel jacket….this morning I literally cut, sewed and took these pictures in less than 3 hours! 🧵 Pattern: @patternemporium_kate #pechasingbutterflies batwing top 🧵Fabric: in @blendedthreadfabrics Burlap Stripes Bamboo Spandex Rib Knit. I followed Kate’s advice and sized down for a lighter fabric, but frankly what’s really important here is your hip measurement. I likely could have gone 1-2 sizes smaller for this fabric and might keep this size and adjust hip for a heavier fabric. My upper body is always a size larger than my lower body. I love this top and am wearing it out to the movies this afternoon 🍿🎬 The fabric colours are great for me and I love that I got the stripes going the right way 🤣. 💕 Chasing Butterflies 💕 by @patternemporium_kate made in a really drapey knit fabric from @beyond.thepinkdoor. This fabric has been in my stash for so long. I had made this pattern before in a cable knit but I really never reached for it. I think the cable knit was not fluid enough for this pattern. So happy I paired these together because I have worn this top so often. The instructions are amazing, like all Kate's patterns. There are always so many versions to choose from in PE patterns. I made the one with no bottom band and an easy crew neck. I then made the snood to match. So handy for our changeable temperatures at the moment in Ireland. I drafted some cuffs as the front and back are cut in one piece and the width of the fabric left my arms a little short. Oh and just to note...the grainline of the fabric is supposed to run horizontally across the top, this is because you need the stretch across the sleeves, but I opted to cut as what is usual with the grainline running vertically as this fabric has lots of stretch and super recovery.
