I wore this recently on our wedding anniversary #26gloriousyears It’s a top and skirt disguised as a dress (I believe the technical term is a #coord ) I love the historical details - the Edwardian pleats at the back of the #fantailskirt and the tucks on the #scroophenriettamaria blouse. The skirt pattern doesn’t have pockets but there is a @scrooppatterns blog post which explains how to add pockets to the panels. They’re made in a fairly undrapey linen and I lined the skirt with cotton. Finally time to reveal the whole sewing project. In January my daughter and I made the first sketches for her wedding dress. Here are some pictures of the sewing, fitting and cutting process. The starting point for the pattern of the bodice was the #societydress #peggybodice #charmpatternsbygertie and the back of the skirt was inspired by #fantailskirt @scrooppatterns. I’ve been experimenting with making my historical costumes more wearable as modern clothing, or more convertible or both. I needed another skirt for late 1800’s/early 1900’s but also wanted a new dressy skirt… so I made @scrooppatterns Fantail skirt - twice! First the full modern length skirt, then I made a historical skirt using just my cotton interlining for the top, with a layer of ny fashion fabric to cover the length from my knees to the floor. This “petticoat” has a tape waistband and ties at the back, so it sits just below the true waistband of the top skirt and doesn’t add additional bulk at the waist. I’m going to add hooks to the underskirt and thread loops to the interior of the overskirt so they hang together when worn. For my future ballgown plans I’m going to add a long chiffon ruffle and some trim (all removable) but I think this works pretty well for a nice spring-y daytime ensemble. It was a full weekend of gigs, but I had a great time with @whiskeybeforebreakfastband at Lost Boy Cider on Friday night. Of course, St. Patrick's season calls for a new outfit. For a straightforward 5 gore Edwardian skirt, it's fighting me every step of the way. The #fantailskirt pattern is fine, but somehow I keep making bad choices. I love this neon pink coral wool (it cannot photograph color accurate). While the pattern doesn't call for a lining, I chose to give it the full "Bernadette Banner" treatment (aka lining, interlining on the bottom, hem facing) because one day I'd like to cover it in black soutache and the lightweight wool doesn't have enough body to stand up to that. First I flatlined each piece with a black cotton curtain I got free in a garage sale. Then when I cut 10" of organdy to put as a bottom interlining, the wool was sheer enough that the difference between white interlining and black lining was too obvious 🤦🏽‍♀️ So I ended up replacing the black lining with more cotton organdy (which itself is stiff enough thst I don't need more interlining). I guess I could turn the black cotton into another Edwardian skirt but cottagecore history bounding is realllllly not my style. Then I serged around one of the pieces to hold the wool and organdy together (I love whipping a seam by hand as much as anyone but not when I'm on a deadline) and this wool had enough mechanical stretch that when I got back around to the top the wool had moved and rippled and wasn't flat anymore. I ended up seam ripping all the serging off that piece except for the first side and hand basted the wool to the organdy on every piece. This was my biggest project to date: the 108-pieces @roberts.wood #elysiadress. But what a dream to make and a dream to wear💖 When I saw the announcement of @christchurchfrocktails I knew I had to make something special, and here we go! Although it was not a scrapbuster for me (as I don’t have ANY scraps after moving to NZ), it is a great scrapbusting project. In total, it took me a whopping 26 hours to make! 6,5 of prep and cutting, and 19,5 hours of sewing. Due to the lack of an overlocker I had to zig-zag every seam, which took aaaages. It was very strange to NOT be thinking about a quilt for this week's #projectquilting The prompt this week was "wearables", and I knew this would be the motivation I needed to finally get this skirt made. I've been wanting a fantail skirt for probably like a decade, and I purchased this pattern five years ago with the intent of getting a skirt made that I could wear to one of my orchestra concerts. It became one of those things: oh the concert is so far away I have time, to, the concert is next week I don't have time. And it’s done! One #fantailskirt! I really like how elegant the skirt looks. The weight of the wool, even though it’s technically too heavy, makes the skirt so smooth and even. I did need to break out a bum pad because of the weight. The back of the skirt very much needs the added support; without it the back of the waistband pulls down much more than it should. I might actually unpick the waistband and put some ribbon inside it for extra stability. I’m actually really pleased with how the bum pad worked out. Using it gives me a bit of the historical S shape that was popular in the Edwardian era. Huzzah for accidental accuracy! It's giving young McGonagall ✨️🐈‍⬛ I made this 1890's ensemble as the first part of a wardrobe for my Vampire The Masquerade character. It may have involved staying up past 11 last night, but I finished my @scrooppatterns #fantailskirt and then wore it to work today! It does sit a little better with a corset, but I’m still pretty happy. Especially with those back pleats. My only alterations were grading from a size 38 hip to 36 waist, and adding a nice big pocket in the back left seam. #tanitisissews

Is it a dress? No! It’s my new sewing obsession: making a top and a skirt in the same fabric so it looks like a dress, but skipping all those pesky fit problems that come with being full busted, small waisted and short torsoed! This is the top of the Charm Patterns Lamour Dress, combined with the Scroop Patterns Fantail Skirt. I made the skirt earlier as part of my summer suit, but I had about a meter of the poplin fabric left. So I hacked the top off the Lamour Dress and added a couple of centimeters to the length so it could function as a stand alone top. Waste not, want not! The linings of 18th century dresses like the #aidahgown were often made from a mix of fabrics: the makers just used whatever scraps they had, as the lining would never be seen. In keeping with this tradition, the body of the black Aidah sample is lined in the same gilt linen as my #augustastays, but the sleeves are lined in a purple linen left over from making a pair of #eastbournetrousers and a #fantailskirt - I had to piece it to have enough, but that’s very period accurate too! #scrooppatterns #virgilsfinegoods #18thcenturyclothing #18thcenturysewing

Ah, the joys of pleats. It seems that no matter how careful I am, I always need to modify things with pleats. I know the pleats took up exactly the amount they were supposed to, but the waistband (which is also the right size) isn’t lining up. I know the waistband is correct and that I have to get the skirt to fit it. Which means playing with the pleat size until everything lines up. The likeliest culprit is the weight of the skirt causing some stretch in the top of the panels. Despite the heavy supervision, I finally got the hem taken care of! This one needed some extra love. I’ve noticed that when you line heavy fabrics that the lining sometimes doesn’t stretch the same as the main fabric when it hangs. If you don’t correct it, it can cause the hem edge to go all wobbly. Once I got the skirt relatively level, I pinned up the hem from the right side. This caused the lining to bubble so I then had to turn the skirt inside out and smooth that down. I love looking at the inside of my makes. My obsession with seam finishes makes them so pretty! I like this one enough that I have actually considered making a skirt designed to wear inside out just to show off seam finishes. I had started to trim the excess lining down but then realized that I could double fold it and that the extra thickness of the fabric would provide the same stiffness that using tarlatan, a special stiff fabric, would. Adding a hem stiffener was quite common as it helps the hem stand away from the body which in turn gives the skirt a nicer shape. An outfit about 3 years in the making, as I slowly made it piece by piece from the skin out. It got set aside a lot for other projects. But this year for our historical society’s annual “Picnic in the Past”, where we honor past members of our community. I got to finish it and wear it. I represented Ida E. Matthews (1869-1943) this year. She was an important part of our community helping to establish the library, historical society, and art association. She studied law and was admitted to practice in the Circuit Court. She was a life long learner that was dedicated to her community. Mein Up-Cycle Projekt. Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich ein altes gekauftes Kleid gepostet, welches ich zu etwas neuem umwandeln wollte. Heute ist es fertig geworden und ich bin überaus zufrieden, was man aus etwas altem, was man nie getragen hat, noch herausholen könnte. Ich habe Rock und Oberteil voneinander getrennt, den Reißverschluss entfernt und das Oberteil komplett in seiner Bestandteil zerlegt. Aus den Teilen des Oberteils wurde eine Weste und das Rock Teil wurde neu arrangiert zu einem #fantailskirt. An Materialien musste ich nur die Knöpfe und den Futterstoff der Weste hinzufügen. Ansonsten konnte ich alle Teile des alten Kleides verwenden. Jackie started with the @scrooppatterns Fantail Skirt pattern, but made the waistband adjustable to be able to wear it with a corset and without! For many of us, our corseted measurement is enough of a difference from uncorseted that it is hard to use our costume wardrobe for historically-inspired fashion. Jackie's solution is brilliant! Dressed for Boomtown today as we took the twins to @wdm.ca. It’s a @scrooppatterns outfit, with my new #persiscorset under the #fantailskirt, and a 1970s-does-Edwardian RTW blouse. And my mom’s antique cameo brooch to finish the whole look off. It’s a look that fits in pretty well at the WDM, even though it’s a little earlier than peak boomtown (aka 1910). I love this kind of skirt (as you may have noticed 😂) but man I just don’t love a high buttoned blouse on myself.

I’m finally getting into the wool that I ordered! That lovely red wool from Fabric Turkey Shop on Etsy is being made into the #scrooppatterns #fantailskirt. I find wool to be a little wiggly, and very static-y, so I’m interlining with cotton. I figure the wool itself will be thick enough for me to need to change up the waistband that a little more won’t hurt it. Added bonus, I can put all the markings on the interlining and not have to worry about the wool being too fuzzy to hold marks. Being a Victorian walking skirt, some of the panels are huge and require piecing. For a straightforward 5 gore Edwardian skirt, it's fighting me every step of the way. The #fantailskirt pattern is fine, but somehow I keep making bad choices. I love this neon pink coral wool (it cannot photograph color accurate). While the pattern doesn't call for a lining, I chose to give it the full "Bernadette Banner" treatment (aka lining, interlining on the bottom, hem facing) because one day I'd like to cover it in black soutache and the lightweight wool doesn't have enough body to stand up to that. First I flatlined each piece with a black cotton curtain I got free in a garage sale. Then when I cut 10" of organdy to put as a bottom interlining, the wool was sheer enough that the difference between white interlining and black lining was too obvious 🤦🏽‍♀️ So I ended up replacing the black lining with more cotton organdy (which itself is stiff enough thst I don't need more interlining). I guess I could turn the black cotton into another Edwardian skirt but cottagecore history bounding is realllllly not my style. Then I serged around one of the pieces to hold the wool and organdy together (I love whipping a seam by hand as much as anyone but not when I'm on a deadline) and this wool had enough mechanical stretch that when I got back around to the top the wool had moved and rippled and wasn't flat anymore. I ended up seam ripping all the serging off that piece except for the first side and hand basted the wool to the organdy on every piece. And it’s done! One #fantailskirt! I really like how elegant the skirt looks. The weight of the wool, even though it’s technically too heavy, makes the skirt so smooth and even. I did need to break out a bum pad because of the weight. The back of the skirt very much needs the added support; without it the back of the waistband pulls down much more than it should. I might actually unpick the waistband and put some ribbon inside it for extra stability. I’m actually really pleased with how the bum pad worked out. Using it gives me a bit of the historical S shape that was popular in the Edwardian era. Huzzah for accidental accuracy! Day 4 of #memademay2025 and the #charmpatterns prompt is my favorite make. This is so tough! But I thought I'd feature this Edwardian petticoat which I love. It's from a gorgeous light pink silk taffeta that rustles so satisfyingly as it moves and I hand sewed all the little velvet bows and rows of ruffles so they'd be exactly how I wanted them. Wiggly wool gets stabilized with cotton interlining. It’s a TON of basting, but very worthwhile. I always seem to get variation when I have to cut pieces out. Finally finished this grey skirt!! It’s about as good as I was hoping, considering the fabric is a nasty piece of work, and it could use a good press except that this fabric hates the iron (but somehow still wrinkles?) But, it’s sure fun. And will help fill out my winter wardrobe. The pattern is a 1970s Burda envelope pattern that I’ve made before, but with added width, pockets, and pleats in the back for that Belle Époque look. Is it a dress? No! It’s my new sewing obsession: making a top and a skirt in the same fabric so it looks like a dress, but skipping all those pesky fit problems that come with being full busted, small waisted and short torsoed! This is the top of the Charm Patterns Lamour Dress, combined with the Scroop Patterns Fantail Skirt. I made the skirt earlier as part of my summer suit, but I had about a meter of the poplin fabric left. So I hacked the top off the Lamour Dress and added a couple of centimeters to the length so it could function as a stand alone top. Been sewing Ngaio Blouses and Fantail Skirts for a mini capsule wardrobe for the new school year. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I think I need to see if I still have the last bits of this skirt fabric, so I can retrofit it with pockets. Ah, the joys of pleats. It seems that no matter how careful I am, I always need to modify things with pleats. I know the pleats took up exactly the amount they were supposed to, but the waistband (which is also the right size) isn’t lining up. I know the waistband is correct and that I have to get the skirt to fit it. Which means playing with the pleat size until everything lines up. The likeliest culprit is the weight of the skirt causing some stretch in the top of the panels. Despite the heavy supervision, I finally got the hem taken care of! This one needed some extra love. I’ve noticed that when you line heavy fabrics that the lining sometimes doesn’t stretch the same as the main fabric when it hangs. If you don’t correct it, it can cause the hem edge to go all wobbly. Once I got the skirt relatively level, I pinned up the hem from the right side. This caused the lining to bubble so I then had to turn the skirt inside out and smooth that down. I love looking at the inside of my makes. My obsession with seam finishes makes them so pretty! I like this one enough that I have actually considered making a skirt designed to wear inside out just to show off seam finishes. I had started to trim the excess lining down but then realized that I could double fold it and that the extra thickness of the fabric would provide the same stiffness that using tarlatan, a special stiff fabric, would. Adding a hem stiffener was quite common as it helps the hem stand away from the body which in turn gives the skirt a nicer shape.
