Amalia Jacket 1775-1795
The Amalia Jacket is based on fashionable styles from the last quarter of the 18th century. Both views have a fitted bodice designed to be pinned closed at the front, curved side and back seams, slim two-piece sleeves, and a slightly higher neckline. View A features a longer skirt with pleats and three-quarter length sleeves, while View B features a shorter 'pierrot' style skirt, cutaway front, and full length sleeves.

I'll tell you a secret about good costuming friends. They are friends because you'd be friends anyway, not just because you have the same hobby.ā ā I spend just as much time with these amazing women doing totally non-costume things as I do costuming things. We give each other career advice, drop off groceries when one of us is sick, talk gardening plans, share books, try restaurants... ā ā The fact that they are willing to wear ridiculous clothes with me is just an added bonus to their wonderfulness! ā ā At the same time, there are costumers I've met who are lovely people, and whose creations I admire and drool over, but who I just don't click with. And that's OK! ā ā #georgianjanuary2025 hosted by @dames_a_la_mode ā ā Day 18: Friendsā ā ā ā ā #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #rococo #18thcenturydress #georgianstyle #georgianfashion #rococostyle #rococofashion #1780s #1780sstyle #1780sfashion #historicalcostumer #historicalfashion #historicalcostume #18thcenturystyle #angelicagown #amaliajacket

#fallforcostume2024 Day 11: Monochrome My Amalia Jacket is made of emerald green silk with a wide, slightly darker green stripe. Seeing progress on my 18th century #amaliajacket is sooo satisfying! I am making it by hand, and it is coming together very quickly! šŖ” . The fabric is a "puce" linen and silk blend from @wearethefabricstore a year or two ago. The colour is hard to capture, as in some lights it looks dark brown, and in others it appears purple. I am endevouring to ONLY use stash fabrics for this project, and so far I am sticking to that! . Swipe to see some inspiration for the finished product, and my fabric being blessed by #felicitythesewingcat š» . Finished the silk petticoat to my 18th century ensemble yesterday! It is made of a crisp white, silk dupioni, and wait for it... they were originally curtains that I snagged at Goodwill! I mean, who doesn't love an amazing #goodwillfind ? I've had it in my stash for at least three years now, and originally planned to use it for a banyan, but it will definitely get more use as a petticoat. I lined it with some of the white cotton muslin that I brought with me from home. So after the Amazon ordering fiasco that took two days to figure out, the rest of my supplies that I ordered have arrived! Including my pinking sheers! So I will add a nice little ruffled row near the bottom hem for a bit of extra fancy. For today, the goal is to get the lining & fashion fabric cut out first the #AmaliaJacket, get that pinned together. And hopefully tape together the paper pattern for the mantle (which will be made in the same fabric as the petticoat), and the mitts! Time to get into the sewing zone! | #historicalfashion #historicalcostume #historicalcostumer #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion

I love that hats were often worn atop caps in the 18th century. It makes so much sense: your hat doesn't get sweaty and dirty and stained, and you can simplify your hairstyle so much by covering most of it with a cap. ā ā For this event both my bergĆØre hat and cap were borrowed from the wonderful @lindsey__woolsey because my caps were being lent to other people and her bergĆØre matched my sash perfectly. ā ā Also featuring the lovely @dani_sews in the second photo. ā ā #georgianjanuary2025 hosted by @dames_a_la_mode Day 26 'Atop'ā ā ā ā ā ā #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #angelicagown #18thcenturydress #georgianstyle #georgianfashion #amaliajacket #scrooppatterns #1780s #1780sstyle #1780sfashion #costumehistory #historicalcostumer #historicalfashion #historicalcostume #fashionhistory #18thcenturystyle #thedreamstress

#georgianjanuary day 4: large Iāve never made any of the really big Georgian gowns like a Robe a la Francaise, I just havenāt had the need for one, but I do love how 18th century styles let me have the big curvy butt of my dreams. I have a rather small one in real life and I just love the transformative effect of all that understructure! One of the fantastic things about historical fashion is that weāre not so bound by the body we have underneath because the structured design means they could create any silhouette they wanted - and they really embraced that large behind! #georgianjanuary2025 is hosted by @dames_a_la_mode #costume #historicalcostume #historicalcostuming #georgian #georgiancostuming #18thcentury #18thcenturycostume #amaliajacket

Spooky season may be over, but thereās never a bad time of year to wander around in a historic cemetery and admire the lichen! In the midst of all the recent real life chaos, it was a joy to be able to take an hour last week to walk through these quiet grounds with @faesandphotos. I adore the photos that Christa took of possibly the most quintessentially-me set of parameters: black and red historically inspired outfit made from recycled materials (the fashion fabric for my #amaliajacket by @scrooppatterns is harvested from an old theater costume and lined with a thrifted sheet, my petticoat is made from three retired choir dresses, and my hat is a thrifted straw hat that I trimmed with feathers purchased from a local small business), in a cemetery (I try to visit historic cemeteries whenever I travel). As part of imagining people complexly, I like to look at the dates on headstones and think about the entire lives these people lived, through all kinds of historical events. And then of course there are the memorials for children who died young a century agoā¦while I donāt know the circumstances surrounding their early deaths, it does make me supremely grateful to live in a time when we have modern medicine, vaccines, pasteurized milk, and empirical data regarding best healthcare practices. #tapophile #historiccemeteries #18thcenturycostume #historicallyinspired #historicallyadequate #historicalcostumer #asianhistoricalcostumer #scrooppatterns

If you didn't already know what I was going to choose for today's #georgianjanuary prompt of "Color," then hi, I'm Sarah and I love PURPLE!!! Whether as an accent accessory, or even a garment like stays that won't show, it's my favorite color and I'm gonna be using it and wearing it a lot 𤣠1: A purple silk sash with my chemise gown made from #laughingmoonpatterns 2: My purple wool #augustastays from the @scrooppatterns / @virgilsfinegoods pattern 3: My daughter's purple stays mostly made by @sstrs3 and finished by me 4: A purple silk early 19th century gown in the Mary Doering collection at the @colonialwmsburg museum 5: I made this bedgown from a purple striped linen that used to be a child's skirt (also bought from @sstrs3 !) It was *exactly* enough for the bedgown! I used the @burnleyandtrowbridge sew along and pattern, and I'm pretty sure that's where the fabric came from originally, too. 6: Purple cotton ikat open robe bought from Britney Mortenson, worn over my go-to white Regency gown. 7: Future plans: Sprigged cotton from @burnleyandtrowbridge for a future #amaliajacket , purple shantung from a Facebook destash group, and #seraphina cotton that @virgilsfinegoods designed based on a circa 1876 print I found in an unfinished antique quilt square!

#sewingyearinreview part 3: I completely hand sewed this gold silk 1780s outfit in February, pretty much just for fun! I had the gold and striped silk in my stash from thrift purchases, and fancied trying making the other version of the Scroop Amalia jacket. I had literally no purpose to make this, no event to wear it too, and I have literally not worn it since taking these pictures! It was genuinely just a fun project and I highly recommend doing these occasionally. While it is complete and wearable as is, I intend to add various trim at some point, particularly a silk flounce along the bottom of the petticoat. Realistically this will likely only happen when I have an event to wear it to! The bodice is a bit on the tight side too - itās a strain to pin in place - which Iāll need to bare in mind if I ever make the pattern again. #sewingyearinreview2024 #costumingyearinreview #sewing #historicalsewing #amaliajacket #costuming #historicalcostume #historicalcostuming #georgiancostume #18thcenturycostume #1780scostume

Well 2021 wasn't a great year in general, but it was a great year for sewing for me. (I stress sewā¦)ā ā I've just done a round-up of all my costume makes from 2021. 28 items! And I've probably missed some. ā ā Here are some of the highlights. Follow the linkin link in my bio to read the whole post about all my makes. ā ā Image 1: A jaunty 1910s ensemble featuring a #selinablouseā ā Image 2: A new 18th c cap, as well as ruffled trim for my #amaliajacketā ā Image 3: a 1900s Wrapper ā ā Image 4: A @virgilsfinegoods #norlandfrock for a four year oldā ā Image 5: An 18th c red cloak, and an extremely exuberant Amaliaā ā Image 6: A 1910s Selina Blouse and #kilbirnieskirtā ā What I like looking at all of these is that while I was prolific, I was also frugal and environmentally friendly. Quite a few of these items were made from re-fashioned items. The vast majority of the remainder were made from stash fabric (often originally thrifted) rather than new. And all of them were carefully and thoughtfully made, and will get lots of use. Itās a very good feeling.ā ā #historicalcostuming #historicalsewing #scrooppatterns #thedreamstress #historicalsewmonthly #historicalsewmonthly2021

Progress: All of the pattern pieces were cut out yesterday, and today I've been assembling the #AmaliaJacket. It's coming along BEAUTIFULLY! Of course, me being me, I stalled on this project because I tend to overthink when I read patterns. But construction wise? I got this in the bag!!! Once this is done.
