Frances Rump 1775-1795

Frances Rump 1775-1795
The Frances Rump is a padded 'bum' or 'rump' that creates the fashionable full-bottomed silhouette of the late 18th century. View A is a larger rump creating the round-hipped shape fashionable between 1775-1787, while View B is smaller and creates a back-focused silhouette fashionable from 1785-1795. The pattern features historically accurate construction techniques, with options for customizing the shape by varying the filling type and amount.

When you just need a big butt for a 1780s gown fast, the free @scrooppatterns #francesrump pattern is a good choice! This rump is very historically adequate and entirely stash supplies, made of cotton sateen from an old sheet (received in a box of free scraps from a garage sale), poly fiberfill, and entirely machine sewn. Sure I could go buy linen canvas, wool batting, and heck even weave my own linen tape with my heddle loom but I'm a parent with a full time job not a reenactor. (And if I had more time I probably would do those things š . But for now saving the hand sewing for whip gathering the silk organza cap for this outfit because that can't be done in any other way).

bear with me, I've just watched the serpent queen and needed to do some sleeves and stuff and seems I arrived at ClownCottage just 16th century vibes no facts I haven't actually posted proper pictures of this blouse, I'm not sure this counts either, but it's the #gardeniaChemise top made with the remnant of dotty fluro voile. Belt is the Edwardian belt by black snail patterns, in linen. Jacket is #zwCroppedShirt without buttons (basically the bodice of a #zwGatherDressHack ), made from quilting cotton š (shades emoji). Hairband I made with the tiny leftovers from the gardenia, just a bit of elastic in part of the band. Ruff thing is really just the bits I tested the ruffler foot I got for the hand crank singer, I just sewed loads of different scraps to test the settings on it. It's not really a ruff, more a shaggy collar? Idk. Bustle pad, they would have had just a little hip roll I think in the 1500s, but I have this #francesRump which is fun to wear, made from a pillowcase. Dress is rtw, bought second hand. Shoes are flabelus velvet, ridiculous I got them really being that it will always be too wet out for me to wear them anywhere. image descriptions - 1, a zoomed in a little yard selfie, I'm standing to the side a bit with my hand in my pocket and my elbow jutting back to let my sleeves stand out. I'm looking up and away. I have a pink and red diamond patterned jacket with cropped sleeves on, it is tucked through a wideish black belt to flare out the bottom. I have a full black dress that flare out from the belt. There are wispy light sleeves that extend out the jacket cuffs. Around my neck I have a shaggy mess of frills that looks a bit like a soggy ruff. My hair is tied back and I'm wearing a ruched headband behind my blunt fringe. 2, a full height view where I'm holding my jacket bunched up in my fist, I'm showing the thin straps of the dress and the puffy under blouse and the belt cinching in the dress fabric. My shoes are red with fluorescent pink trim. 3, a video where I swoosh the skirt around, I lift up my skirt to show the padded bum pad underneath. I start putting on the jacket, it takes so long I made a transition in the video to explain.

My calash bonnet I made and my latest #angelicagown by @scrooppatterns . I added loops and buttons to the back of the gown so I could temporarily bustle it up a la polonaise for skating. The gown is made of a green cotton I got for my birthday. I ended up calling this green and yellow combination "lemons and limes" and decorated a matching bergere with the citruses. I'll wear it again sometime with the bergere and the skirt down The calash bonnet is made with blue silk I also got for my birthday. I actually just looked at photos of them and kinda figured out how they might go together. All makeup and hairstyling products are historical accurate reproductions from @lbcchistorical. I am wearing the #francesrump and the 1770 stays from the book "Corset and Crinolines". #stays #scrooppatterns #1770stays #lbcchistoricalbeauty #lbcchistorical #lbcchistoricalapothecary #lbcc #18thcenturyfashion #18thcentury #18thcenturyitaliangown #18thcenturybeauty #historicalsewing #historicalcostuming #sewhistory #sewhistorical #corsetsandcrinolines #calash #calashbonnet #18thcenturycalash #18thcenturybonnet

This is the #angelicagown by @scrooppatterns and @virgilsfinegoods I made as part of the #angelicathon hosted by: @fantasticalfolliescostuming. I went to @venetianvegas to get photos in it. This style of 18th century dress is known as an #italiangown. So, I decided to go someplace inspired by Venice. Skirt, kerchief , cap, pocket, and apron are all my own. Step one for the #angelicathon hosted by @fantasticalfolliescostuming for me was making the Frances Rump (pattern by @scrooppatterns and @virgilsfinegoods )! So easy. The second step was cutting out the Angelica pattern and putting it together, and step three was washing and ironing 12 meters of fashion fabric, which had been the longest step by far šµāš«š¤£ #historicalcostuming #historicalfashion #historicaldress #eighteenthcenturyfashion #eighteenthcenturydress #georgianfashion #georgiandress #falserump #francesrump

A wee update on the Frances Rump pattern. Last week the free Frances Rump pattern got hit by a bot attack. š£ Dozens of copies of the pattern were āboughtā by accounts with generic male names all within 20 minutes, and all from the same 3 IP addresses. Itās not entirely clear what the bots were after, but apparently itās a common attack on free items. Weāve updated a bunch of settings to make sure everything is secure. One of the things weāve done to discourage further attacks is to change the Frances from a free pattern to a āChoose Your Own Priceā pattern. ⨠There are a range of options for prices from āfreeā to ālook I just really love your patterns and want to pay an insane amount for this one to show itā (look, a poor patternmaker can hope!) So the pattern is still there, itās still available for nothing - or you can choose to pay a bit for it. š Thanks for supporting Scroop Patterns and NOT being a bot! #scrooppatterns #francesrump #18thcenturysewingpatterns

Well I hear that the #angelicathon hosted by @fantasticalfolliescostuming has begun! Although I hope I can consider myself a participant, technically my Angelicathon has been going on forā¦*checks notes* about 8 or 9 months already!! You can follow some of my journey via the pictures in this post! Most of that time was stalling due to intimidation or frustration. Because oh boy has my first time sewing an 18th century gown been a challenge! I think I made about 3 bodice mockups before I got the courage to cut my final fabric (and yes, the fabric is not my color, but I thrifted this bedsheet set several years ago and finally wanted to use them.). Not to mention the dang #sleevevils which have been my mortal enemy! Itās taken no less than SEVEN mock ups with various adjustments to get it comfy and workable. I even partially completed a set of sleeves that I had to scrap and start over. But, I think the end is in sight?! *knock on wood* I do want to thank @thedreamstress @ladyofthewilderness for their excellent pattern and instructions for the @scrooppatterns #angelicagown. Itās a gorgeous pattern and so instructive! I only wish I was better at following it correctly! My foundation garments, specifically my #augustastays and #francesrump were also made by me (and largely handsewn) using #scrooppatterns! Theyāre great! My shift and petticoat were also made by me (also mostly hand sewn) using tutorials from @mariahpattie and @burnleyandtrowbridge Also great resources! I do have photos of me in my full 18th century undies get up, so if people are interested Iāll share them. Hope to show off the completed gown soon! This weekend, I made some late 18th century underthings. I got myself a white bedsheet, and I made both the pay-what-you-can Frances rump from Scroop patterns and a white petticoat out of it. These are for under the chemise a la reine I'm slowly working on. Possibly such a petticoat should be bodiced, but I went with a typical under-petticoat style for the period. And yeah, it's made of cotton. I considered making it from silk, but its basic purpose is to go under a dress of semi-sheer white cotton, meaning it won't be seen. So why use silk? If I made it from silk, I could maybe use it as an outer layer for future projects, but . . . those projects are well down the line, and I need to just make stuff happen for now. Anyway, it was a productive weekend, making two garments out of one sheet (with a bit of fabric left over). #18thcentury #francesrump #falserump #petticoat #historicalsewingadventures #historicalcostuming

Here it is! The #angelicagown by @scrooppatterns and @virgilsfinegoods I made as part of the #angelicathon hosted by: @fantasticalfolliescostuming. I went to @venetianvegas to get photos in it. Someone asked me if I was hot and I didn't even notice that it was hot outside. It felt humid. But, that's it. My outfit is a mixture of cottons and linens in every layer (except stays, pocket, shoes, rump stuffing, hat, and closures). Natural fabrics are so wonderful in the heat, even in many layers. The pattern called for hand sewing the entire thing. But, I'm visually impaired so I machine sewed mine. Disabled women like myself would've been lucky to dress like this back then. While I love wearing, recreating, and learning about historical fashion, I never want to go back there. Skirt, kerchief , cap, pocket, and apron are all my own. I basically just cut shapes out of fabric for these and then sewed them together. Chemise patterned after a free online pattern. #francesrump view b, from Scroop Patterns. Over the next months Iāll be working on an 18th century gown, (admittedly and purposefully inaccurate on materials and some of the construction). Because itās fitted, and because I want the results to be stunning, gotta start with structural needs. Hence rump. Youāll (sort of) see it in use probably when I mock up the bodice. Confessions from Last Night: All my current projects are big, fiddly, and going nowhere, so in a fit of frustration I pulled out Scroop Patterns' free rump pattern and threw it together! As you do. Alas, any and all stays are currently in pieces, so this is the only way I can show you all right now... This is the last, poor scraps of the thrifted bedsheet I made my Regency overgown from back this time last year, finally being pressed into service one last time. It's very tightly woven so it's perfect for this kind of thing. The pattern itself was super easy to follow, even after I cut several sizes too large because that was the width of my fabric and I was determined to use it up. My biggest problem (as ever) was getting the amount of stuffing right; I'm a chronic over-stuffer! Still we got there in the end, and for an evening's work I think it looks pretty good! It can go with my other false rump in the weirdest collection I've ever formed... #scrooppatterns #scroopfrancesrump #historicallyinspired #thriftedsewingsupplies #thriftedfabrics #bumroll #bumrollplease #historicalcostuming #historicaltrekking #historicalsewing #historicalunderwear #historicalundergarments #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturystyle #18thcenturycostume #18thcenturysewing

Influenced by @opuselenae ās Pumpkin Butt, Iāve decided to use up a little more scrap fabric to make a Cheshire Butt! The spotted purple fabric is a scrap that I wanted to use up and vaguely matched. It will be the underside. I used the quilting lines as my seams and this was as far as I got tonight.
