Kilbirnie Skirt 1915-1918
The Kilbirnie Skirt is a gathered skirt with a high waist held in place with a boned internal waistband, featuring cord gathering and a small standing frill. View A replicates the original skirt with rounded patch pockets with cord gathered ruffles, while View B features decorative front buttons and triangular pockets with buttoned flaps. The skirt closes at center front with a placket fastened with snap fasteners.

🧵 An understated 1910s look yesterday featuring my new Kilbirnie Skirt that I made last weekend. While I think @scrooppatterns puts more emphasis on full reenactment pieces, they also have a lovely collection of patterns for simpler historical garments that can be easily adapted to modern wear. I’ll admit that when this pattern was first released a while back I found it a bit unexciting - a gathered skirt with patch pockets? been there, done that - but for some reason I kept coming back to the product page, and I can now easily say that it’s my favourite skirt pattern I’ve worked with! I’d characterize this design as “deceptively interesting”; what looks like a basic gathered waistline in fact has really neat looking (and satisfying to sew!) cord gathers lightly suspended from a sturdy, boned internal waistband that I am personally finding to be one of the most comfortable skirt waistbands I’ve ever worn. It sits high on the torso and the cord gathering results in a slight paperbag effect that makes the skirt look even more high-waisted, which is a silhouette I really like! There’s a real sort of casual elegance to it, to my eye. There are two pocket styles provided; I went for the option that mirrors the cord gathering up top, since I felt they would suit the slightly more relaxed, rustic feel of this mushroom brown linen. But I can definitely see myself making more of these; a striped fabric would work really well with the second, more angular pocket style, for something a little less basic and a little more eye-catching than this first try, which is really just meant as a wardrobe staple. Outfit details: #kilbirnieskirt by @scrooppatterns (Shortened by about 6 inches, with the pockets raised by about 1 inch from the suggested placement) #ogdencami by @truebias #belmontcardigan by @gudrunjohnston (Third slide) #stackerjacket by @papercutpatterns - it was briefly cool enough yesterday morning for both a cardigan AND a jacket, and boy has that led me full tilt into dreaming of autumn again . . #memade #memadewardrobe #handmade #handmadewardrobe #historybounding #1910sfashion #sewistsofinstagram #imademyclothes

Since I'm on the topic of wonderful tester makes, here's a throwback to @litenkrubba and her fabulous Kilbirnie skirt. Her take on it is utter perfection! She used the additional historical information given in the pattern as inspiration, and added a tuck around the hem, and buttons clustered in pairs all the way down the front of the skirt. Her fabric is a thin wool in a wonderful shade of grey-purple, and her 1910s blouse collection has me green with envy! She made a Size 34. See more of the tester makes of the Kilbirnie Skirt on my blog - just follow the link in my profile and click on this image again. #scrooppatterns #kilbirnieskirt #historicalcostuming #1910scostuming #historicalsewing #historicalsewingpatterns #historybounding #1910sstyle

Well 2021 wasn't a great year in general, but it was a great year for sewing for me. (I stress sew…) I've just done a round-up of all my costume makes from 2021. 28 items! And I've probably missed some. Here are some of the highlights. Follow the linkin link in my bio to read the whole post about all my makes. Image 1: A jaunty 1910s ensemble featuring a #selinablouse Image 2: A new 18th c cap, as well as ruffled trim for my #amaliajacket Image 3: a 1900s Wrapper Image 4: A @virgilsfinegoods #norlandfrock for a four year old Image 5: An 18th c red cloak, and an extremely exuberant Amalia Image 6: A 1910s Selina Blouse and #kilbirnieskirt What I like looking at all of these is that while I was prolific, I was also frugal and environmentally friendly. Quite a few of these items were made from re-fashioned items. The vast majority of the remainder were made from stash fabric (often originally thrifted) rather than new. And all of them were carefully and thoughtfully made, and will get lots of use. It’s a very good feeling. #historicalcostuming #historicalsewing #scrooppatterns #thedreamstress #historicalsewmonthly #historicalsewmonthly2021

#fallforcostume Day 22: Stripes! I love stripes but haven’t made a lot of striped things. Fortunately this summer I started to change that with my #kilbirnieskirt by @scrooppatterns After months of hand sewing this got me using my machine again! It has lots of fun historical details like a boned waistband and POCKETS. Making a petticoat to go with this is on my long list of projects to do. #moarpockets #pocketsforsnacks #stripes #scrooppatterns #1910sfashion #20thcenturyfashion #historicalfashion #historicalsewing #sewingtechniques #historybounding #skirt #brooklyn

Today I'm taking a little break from working on future patterns to work on pieces for a 1910s wardrobe for the annual historical retreat I go on with my friends. ⠀ ⠀ The #kilbirnieskirt and #selinablouse are going to feature rather prominently, not just in my wardrobe, but amongst the whole group. 😜⠀ ⠀ They are versatile enough that we should look like a charming catalogue ad, not a particularly well dressed cult! 🤣⠀ ⠀ Both of these patterns are comfortable enough we should be able to do all the cooking and rambling and tidying up in them. And the Kilbirnie's pockets are going to be particularly useful when we go hunting for fossils down on the coast!⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #scrooppatterns #historicalsewing #historicalsewingpatterns #historicalcostuming #1910scostuming #1910ssewingpatterns ⠀

Not long ago I tested a pattern for @scrooppatterns 😊 This is the new #kilbirnieskirt , a pattern from the nineteen teens. It has the niftiest boned inner waist structure so that you put it on and the paperbag waist doesn't move! No futsing!! AND POCKETS😃 . I made mine from a $5 linen curtain I found at a thrift store. It washed up well, someone got black grease on it but it all came out. And then I sat in dirt and stood next to a redwood 😆 . The day we took pics we headed to John Muir's homestead in Martinez where it hit nearly 100 degrees. I've got the Marilla corset on under all this, which was also pretty comfy, but that fabulous very large hat (purchased originally for my Rose outfit while doing Sew Weekly) kept me surprisingly cool. It was nice to make something for me 🙂 And POCKETS 🥰

I've put out a call for testers for the next Scroop Pattern: a petticoat or skirt with fabulous finishing details. ⠀ ⠀ Views C & D of the pattern are designed to go under 1910s skirts like the Kilbirnie Skirt. ⠀ ⠀ I particularly like the silhouette View D gives. It's the least ruffly and full, but it's perfect for creating the slim A-line you see in 'teens fashion plates. ⠀ ⠀ 🌻 Link to learn more about pattern testing and how to apply to test in my profile. 🌻⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #scrooppatterns #kilbirnieskirt #1910sfashion #1910sstyle #callforpatterntesters #patterntesterswanted #patterntesting #historicalsewing #historicalsewingpatterns

The Kilbirnie Skirt and Selina Blouse on me! (can we just take a moment to appreciate how perfectly the buttons work together?) I was so excited about these two patterns I couldn't resist making an outfit for myself. And I have zero regrets! It's so comfortable to wear, and I feel so pretty and elegant, but it's also extremely practical. I could dress like this every day… Worn with @AmericanDuchess Moliere shoes, which I hope come back some day because I didn't get them in black when they came out, and my wardrobe could use a black pair! #scrooppatterns #kilbirnieskirt #selinablouse #historicalcostuming #historicalsewing #historybounding #historyeveryday #slowfashion #sewyourownslowfashion #sewyourown #historicalsewingpatterns #1910scostuming #1910sfashion #belleepoquecostuming

#costumingyearinreview Pattern testing! A new goal for this year = accomplished. Had a blast testing the #snipsbeanie for @nerfherderknits and the #kilbirnieskirt for @scrooppatterns The Kilbirnie was also my first time using my sewing machine in awhile, which led to me realizing - omg it doesn’t have to take forever to make things! I have fallen in love with hand sewing but there’s also something very nice about sewing a seam in two minutes… #patterntesting #crochet #historicalsewing #historicalpatterns #1910sfashion #historicalfashion #historybounding #ahsokatano #ashokacosplay #starwars #starwarsfashion #crochetersofinstagram #craft #beanie #craftcore #historicaldress #historicalcostume #historicalsewingtechniques

I'm going back down the 1910s pockets rabbit hole again, so let's stop and take a moment to admire the cunning pointy pockets of View B of the #kilbirnieskirt. They are cute, they are enormous, and I love them! I have found that you have to be careful not to drop really small things into them though, because fishing one tiny button out of the bottom point is rather frustrating! #scrooppatterns #historicalsewing #historicalsewingpatterns #1910sfashion #1910sewing #historybounding #edwardianfashion #edwardianstyle #edwardiansewingpatterns #yesithaspockets

Some views from WWI I spent a very educational weekend at the Fort where I got the chance to meet and talk with some amazing living historians, discuss the long and complicated history of Suffrage and celebrate the first big event at the Fort since the start of the Pandemic. 📸: @aidenlocke Outfit Details: Hat is a thrift flip with purple and yellow flowers paying homage to the purple of the British suffrage movement and the yellow of the flag. I handmade the flag which was based off of an extant example in the Manitoba Museum (I have more fabric and the pattern so if you know someone who would want one let me know!) Skirt is @scrooppatterns Kilbirnie Skirt made with stash fabric, made for me by @sylviebonniere Suffrage buttons from @regimental_stores Pandemic mask made according to specifications from 1918 (Though cheesecloth is very breathable, this was an interpretive tool only) #kilbirnieskirt #scrooppatterns #19teensfashion #womenssuffrage #livinghistory #wwireenacting #historicalcostuming #costube #womeninlivinghistory

One more piece of my Edwardian outfit checked off the list! ☑️ I was fortunate enough to be chosen to test the recently released Ettie Petticoat pattern by @scrooppatterns It comes with four views covering 1890 to 1920 and this is View A suitable for 1890-1910 🧵I gotta be honest this took what 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 like forever to make. Not because it was difficult but because I’m impatient and it turns out doing lace insertion (partially) on a treadle sewing machine is kind of tedious so I kept taking breaks and dragging this make out. lol I’m so in love with the end result though! Next I’ll be making View D to wear with my #kilbirnieskirt 🧵 All of my fabric and notions are from @joann_stores #scrooppatterns #ettiepetti #petticoat #ettiepetticoat

I made a new skirt! This is the Kilbirnie Skirt from Scroop patterns, and since it's a historically accurate late 1910's pattern I decided to style it both in a 1918 style and a modern style. I even wore historical underpinnings for the 1918 version (which was a mistake because I didn't make it to my corsetted measurements), and looked up hairstyles. Now, most of the pictures I've seen from 1918 they did stick with plain white masks, but I refuse to believe there wasn't some ingenious seamstress who made some matching masks when making a new dress or skirt or blouse. Je refuse The blouse from the 1918 version is the Armistice Blouse from Folkwear Patterns, and the blouse from the modern version is the Robin dress also from Scroop Patterns, and yes I do wish I'd checked the buttons in a mirror before I took photos because otherwise that's a great photo Oh, nearly forgot to add, the fabric is a lightweight linen/cotton plain weave from Amothreads #kilbirnieskirt #scrooppatterns #folkwearpatterns #armisticeblouse #historicalsewing #curvysewing #plussizesewing #ddfacemask

Boned interior waistbands are the cornerstone of 1910s skirt and dress construction. Back in the 'teens you could buy pre-made boned waistbands at any haberdashery. Today it's a little trickier: you have to make your own. The Kilbirnie Skirt pattern includes detailed instructions on making your own waistband, with lots of tips to help you achieve a result that acts as much as possible like a period original. #scrooppatterns #kilbirnieskirt #historicalsewing #edwardiansewing #historicalsewingpatterns #1910ssewing #historicalcostuming

Jenni looking every so lovely in the Selina Blouse and Kilbirnie Skirt. Her blouse is of silk georgette with the cutest pattern of wee berries and vines on it, with collar and trim of ivory silk crepe de chine. Her skirt is black silk crepe de chine. Throwback to the photoshoot for the @scrooppatterns #selinablouse and #kilbirnieskirt, and @ninavirgo's gorgeous grey and white checked ensemble, and her fabulous vintage umbrella. It reminds me of Fenella and her fascination with Grandma's swan's head umbrella in Katherine Mansfield's The Voyage. Such a wonderful description of the umbrella, and the way it "kept giving her shoulder a sharp little peck as if it too wanted her to hurry." Luckily our photoshoot was much happier and more fun than poor little Fenella's voyage. #edwardianfashion #scrooppatterns #katherinemansfield #1910sfashion #1910sstyle #swansheadumbrella

A side benefit of sewing historical garments is that I learn clever little techniques that make my modern sewing so much better. I’m making the cuff dress from Assembly Line patterns and wanted a slightly deeper hem than the 3cm turn hem they suggested. For a flared shape run a line of gathering stitches around the hem at the top when it’s turned up then gently ease it in. I learned this technique from the #kilbirnieskirt from @scrooppatterns #sewingtechniques #alwayslearning

#fallforcostume Day One: Intro Hello to all the new people who have followed me on this account! My name is Holly and I do a lot of historical costuming, knitting and generally historically-adjacent things. I'm studying museum management this year and in my spare time have a small but growing historically inspired business called @tinkertonsdrygoods and have a YouTube page where I share my costuming projects. Fun fact! This photo was taken by the lovely @heytheregeorgiangirl with an antique 1900s camera from a Great War event from last weekend. Increasingly I'm trying to work towards historical clothes, practical things that look like they walked out of time. I look forward to sharing all my historical adventures! @redthreaded #costube #historicalcostuming #greatwarreenactment #wwireenacting #fallforcostume2021 #womeninlivinghistory #scrooppatterns #kilbirnieskirt
