Angelica Gown 1775-1790
The Angelica Gown is an elegant variant of the 'Italian Gown' style from the mid 1770s to early 1790s. Both views feature deeply pointed back waists, high narrow backs, a full pleated skirt open at the front, and a hidden front-laced closure. View A has a plain bodice front with a short pointed front curve, while View B features a longer sloped V at the front waist with optional serrated trim.

I'm excited to share my latest 18th century gown! This is the @scrooppatterns Angelica gown (1775-90) that I wore to the @costumersofcolor #ChevalierBall. It is made out of teal silk taffeta purchased from @fashion_fabrics_club with a hand embroidered petticoat of light pink silk taffeta from @fabrixsf . The engageantes are cotton mull from @burnleyandtrowbridge with vintage scalloped lace edging. I used a vintage buckle for my belt. My lavender wig is an @ardawigs and I used the 18th Century Hair & Wig Styling book by @demoder to make it with a wig support made by @mutton_dressedas_lamb . It's adorned with silk ribbon flowers that I made. I used extant examples of petticoats from this time period for inspiration for the embroidery on my petticoat. It took much longer than I envisioned to embroider it, so I did it in two stages, with the vine border and flowers in the first stage. I simplified the design with simple flowers and chainstitch embroidery. The last photos are from my county fair and include pics of stage one of the petticoat embroidery. I was honored to not only be awarded a Best of Show for this ensemble, but also the Best of Show Overall and 1st Place People's Choice. Gown: @scrooppatterns Angelica in silk taffeta Petticoat: self-drafted in silk taffeta Shoes: @americanduchess Kensingtons dyed by me Jewelry: @inthelongrundesigns Wig: @ardawigs Cockade: @mutton_dressedas_lamb Chevalier 📸: @chai_and_parche #SalonAtPalaisRoyal #CostumersOfColor #18thCenturySewing #18thCenturyDress #18thCenturyDressmaking #scrooppatterns #scroopangelica #scroopangelicagown #polonaise #embroideredpetticoat #handembroidery #18thcenturyembroidery #BIPOCcostumer #polynesiancostumer #HistoricalSewing #chevalierevent

I haven't been posting my sewing progress recently because I've been sewing like crazy, no time to stop. I've been working on my 18th century gown for @thebridgetownball in mid May! I've needed to make everything from the ground up. So far I've made the stays, not pictured new chemise and bum pad, 3 petticoats, the outer still needs a ruffle. I'm currently working on the outer striped gown using fabric I bought on the LA fabric district 4 years ago. I've got the bodice mockup done, working on sewing and hemming the skirt portion. Patterns used are @scrooppatterns Angelica Gown and Augusta Stays. 🩷💚 #angelicagown #augustastays #18thcentury #historicalcostuming #historicalsewing #imadethis #seamstress #bridgertonsonnetflix #bridgerton #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturystyle #bridgetownball

Day 16: 18th century! Definitely one of my favorite eras, especially the later half. While we all know my heart truly lies in the previous century, this comes at a close second! Growing up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Colonial Williamsburg was definitely A Thing, and I attribute at least some part of my obsession with historical dress from visiting it and similar local places as a kid. This gown is a wearable mockup for my red #angelicagown , and I ended up loving it just as much as the "real" one! Both the block printed cotton and the pink/gold silk for the petticoat were purchased from @renaissancefabrics , and while pink and frothy is ESPECIALLY not my style, I love love love this gown! I mean...Disney villains can dress up like cupcakes occasionally, right?? #Fallforcostume2024 is hosted by the fabulous @sew_through_time ! #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturycostume #18thcenturysewing

FINALLY!!! I started my own outfit close to 10 years ago with my DAR Chapter's first Textile and Tea meet-ups. Slowly picking away at each piece over the years. All layers made from scratch from chemise to gown. I did not do the tambour embroidery on my apron or lace making! Took years to find the right fabrics (quilted petticoat not HA but $3 a yard back in the 2000's or 2010's I won't turn it down)! Mostly machine sewing on inside parts and more hand sewing as I progressed. Still some hand finishing left but wanted to get photos with my rhododendron in bloom! Stays: Redthreaded older version of the 1750's with synthetic whale bone from Burnley & Trowbridge. Fabric from Sewfisticated (linen) and Salvation Army (silk/linen blend from a pair of men's pants I took apart). Chemise: Handkerchief linen from The Fabric Place Basement. Instructions from "Everyday Dress of Rural America 1783-1800" by Meridth Wright with additional reinforced shoulders instructions from Sharon Ann Burnston's website. Petticoat: Linen from Sewfisticated. Instructions from "The American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking" 1780's false rump: Vintage ticking found at a yard. Instructions from "The American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking" Quilted petticoat: Quilted raw silk with machine embroidery from Hobby Lobby. Instructions from "The American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking" Apron: Cotton tambour embroidered curtains found at East Coast Thrift. Ladder lace Vintage from my mother's lace collection for the top. Gown: Bolt of vintage reproduction Williamsburg Botanical glazed cotton found at East Coast thrift. The process of making my first robe a l’anglaise has been long but so much fun. I never imagined I would be doing so much sewing by hand on a wearable item and actually enjoying it. I’m impatient and a bit indecisive so I don’t have petticoats or a proper shift yet, and even with those made I’ll still need to add trim to the dress, make a bergere hat (I’d love a tricorn but it would go better with a different style), and make some historically appropriate shoes. I’ve been relying heavily on @scrooppatterns and @americanduchess as my primary resources for this project, and so, so many sewing blogs and YouTubers! #angelicagown #historicalcostuming #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion

After months of losing the will to do all things creative due to, you know the state the world, i finally picked up my green stays from eons ago to finish. I did not finish them. I need a palate cleanser. So I stripped my dress form of my Angelica gown mock up and got to business. I attacked the seams of my IKEA duvet. I transferred my mock up changes to fabric and then to lining and fashion. I measured seam allowance with more than my eyeballs and blind faith. Heck I even ironed- repeatedly. In two states! I was feeling good. I made my first eyelet. In the wrong place. Twice. But I was not discouraged. I learned the English stitch. And just when I stopped to admire my progress… bubbles!!!!! I’ve got a long layover so I’m spending it turning the #angelicagown pattern into a Layers accessible pattern. 😁 I hope to have it up and available in the Layers format by next week. And don’t worry, if you already bought it (or are planning to buy it during the sale!) you’ll be able to download the updated version. Eventually I hope to have every pattern be Layers friendly, but it adds a bit more time (and thus cost) to pattern development, and I’ve prioritised stuff like extra sizes when I couldn’t afford to do both. But the more successful Scroop Patterns becomes the more I can afford to do! #scrooppatterns #patterndevelopment #historicalsewingpatterns

We love this new gown made by @naomiloveshistory! Naomi had such nice things to say about our fabric and the dressmaking process: ✨New Dress Alert!!✨ She is FINALLY done!!! Welcoming my new 1780s gown to my collection. She is 95% handsewn, and made out of the most beautiful brown linen with a faint light blue stripe I got from @burnleyandtrowbridge last year! I have taken my time over a month to complete her, (but in reality probably took about a full week). I hope to be debuting this dress at a possible event in Philadelphia this coming November (stay tuned!), and I can’t wait to wear it in action! Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and watching the progress over my stories for the last month haha! Now to just make a new petticoat to go with it, and I’ll be ready to shine! I finally got pictures of my finished 18th century Angelica gown on my dress form. I made a sash and some bows out of pink silk that matches pretty well, left from my late Victorian corset. I have the pink on the hat, and made some bows from the stripe for either my hair or the hat. I also added polonaise ties for dancing. I'm ready for @thebridgetownball on Saturday! I'll be making some matching pockets today from the stays fabric. The Life and Times of Angelica, the Dress. Today’s prompt for #georgianjanuary2025 is #restyled In modern times fashion magazines and websites will tell you every woman needs a LBD, Little Black Dress. True that may be but let me show you the beauty of a GBD, Giant Black Dress. She’s everything to me. Shes versatile and easily accessorized. She looks good for any occasion. I’ve gone on some of my best adventures with her. Image 1 & 2: First wearing to a fall 2022 backyard party hosted by the beautiful @thejennylafleur I was so nervous meeting everyone for the first time. I was also nervous about how giant my butt pad was until it wasn’t. That party taught me the Georgians had no concept of a pad too large. I promptly went home and stuffed my bum more. 😂 Image 3: King George’s Birthday Ball @oldfortniagara I brought Angelica into the spring time with a pretty colorful sash 🎀 and a chiffon neckline trim. June 2023 Video 4: I had to include my love because it’s my love. 🥰 Image 5: I needed a quick fall look so I paired my black #angelicagown with my old red orange 🍁🍁petticoat (that got restyled itself with a new ruffle). I added a bow for a pop of color on top. Sept 2023 Image 6: Angelica’s time to shine. I needed a look for the school trunk or treat. Party city meets #historicalfashion it was a hit for a witchy look. Oct 2023 #restyled is my favorite look because these gowns we make are beautiful. They are expensive. They are works of love and labor. How often do we wear modern clothes that are equal in value to the layers of silks and linen we put into our historical looks? These clothes deserve to come out to play multiple times. They need to be shown off. I’ll never tell you what to do but I’ll tell you that your gowns want to be worn again and again. Today sucks and I've got zero energy or brain for stuff, so here's when I did and could get some test pictures of a gown that only took me two years to finish (sorry, @scrooppatterns ). I'd originally been a pattern tester for the Angelica gown, then work and ADHD and having to go off Adderall all piled up and I had a mostly-finished bodice and pile of skirt fabric sitting around. This year has been multiple levels of shitty, but I've finally nearly finished working through a few unfinished projects, and I've got myself a lovely, swooshy silk gown. (Also I didn't mean to have the flower border here, but propping my phone on a trellis for pictures got them in frame and hey I'm ok with this) #sewing #cosplay #historicalsewing #angelicagown #scrooppatterns #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #handsewing #18thcenturysewing #fabricguru

I'll tell you a secret about good costuming friends. They are friends because you'd be friends anyway, not just because you have the same hobby. I spend just as much time with these amazing women doing totally non-costume things as I do costuming things. We give each other career advice, drop off groceries when one of us is sick, talk gardening plans, share books, try restaurants... The fact that they are willing to wear ridiculous clothes with me is just an added bonus to their wonderfulness! At the same time, there are costumers I've met who are lovely people, and whose creations I admire and drool over, but who I just don't click with. How different are the Aidah & Angelica gown patterns? As different as two Italian Gown patterns can be while still having mix and match bodice & sleeve options! They share a side-back seam and an armscye, so fronts, backs, and sleeves can be interchanged, but we made every other element and technique as different as possible so that you can learn as many ways to make an Italian gown as possible between the two, maximising the creative possibilities. The Angelica has a one piece sleeve, the Aidah a two. The Angelica fastens with hidden lacing and has a side bodice seam. The Aidah hooks or pins and has no side bodice seam. And so many more! #scrooppatterns #aidahgown #angelicagown #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturyclothing #18thcenturysewing

The gown is made of a green cotton I got for my birthday. I ended up calling this green and yellow combination "lemons and limes" and decorated a matching bergere with the citruses. I'll wear it again sometime with the bergere and the skirt down The calash bonnet is made with blue silk I also got for my birthday. I actually just looked at photos of them and kinda figured out how they might go together. All makeup and hairstyling products are historical accurate reproductions from @lbcchistorical. Here it is! The #angelicagown by @scrooppatterns and @virgilsfinegoods I made as part of the #angelicathon hosted by: @fantasticalfolliescostuming. I went to @venetianvegas to get photos in it. Someone asked me if I was hot and I didn't even notice that it was hot outside. It felt humid. But, that's it. My outfit is a mixture of cottons and linens in every layer (except stays, pocket, shoes, rump stuffing, hat, and closures). Natural fabrics are so wonderful in the heat, even in many layers. The pattern called for hand sewing the entire thing. But, I'm visually impaired so I machine sewed mine. Disabled women like myself would've been lucky to dress like this back then. While I love wearing, recreating, and learning about historical fashion, I never want to go back there. Skirt, kerchief , cap, pocket, and apron are all my own. I basically just cut shapes out of fabric for these and then sewed them together. Chemise patterned after a free online pattern. Stays are from the "Corsets & Crinolines" book. #francesrump by #scrooppatterns Shoes: @americanduchess #kensingtons Cosmetics: @lbcchistorical Stockings were found on Etsy, inspired by the clocked stockings style of the period. Well I hear that the #angelicathon hosted by @fantasticalfolliescostuming has begun! Although I hope I can consider myself a participant, technically my Angelicathon has been going on for…*checks notes* about 8 or 9 months already!! You can follow some of my journey via the pictures in this post! Most of that time was stalling due to intimidation or frustration. Because oh boy has my first time sewing an 18th century gown been a challenge! I think I made about 3 bodice mockups before I got the courage to cut my final fabric (and yes, the fabric is not my color, but I thrifted this bedsheet set several years ago and finally wanted to use them.). Not to mention the dang #sleevevils which have been my mortal enemy! It’s taken no less than SEVEN mock ups with various adjustments to get it comfy and workable. I even partially completed a set of sleeves that I had to scrap and start over. But, I think the end is in sight?! *knock on wood* I do want to thank @thedreamstress @ladyofthewilderness for their excellent pattern and instructions for the @scrooppatterns #angelicagown. It’s a gorgeous pattern and so instructive! I only wish I was better at following it correctly! My foundation garments, specifically my #augustastays and #francesrump were also made by me (and largely handsewn) using #scrooppatterns! They’re great! My shift and petticoat were also made by me (also mostly hand sewn) using tutorials from @mariahpattie and @burnleyandtrowbridge Also great resources! I do have photos of me in my full 18th century undies get up, so if people are interested I’ll share them. Hope to show off the completed gown soon! (Maybe in a full 1780s get up!) #virgilsfinegoods #18thcenturyunderwear #18thcenturyfashion #1780sfashion #makersgonnamake #sewist #mantuamaker #historicalcostuming #historicalfashion #historicalcostume #1780s #italiangown #fakeittillyoumakeit

I have two sleeves finished! Not the bodice. Not the stays that must go beneath the unfinished bodice. But progress is progress. #angelicagown #scrooppatterns #ikeaduvet #handsewn

I love that hats were often worn atop caps in the 18th century. It makes so much sense: your hat doesn't get sweaty and dirty and stained, and you can simplify your hairstyle so much by covering most of it with a cap. For this event both my bergère hat and cap were borrowed from the wonderful @lindsey__woolsey because my caps were being lent to other people and her bergère matched my sash perfectly. Also featuring the lovely @dani_sews in the second photo. #georgianjanuary2025 hosted by @dames_a_la_mode Day 26 'Atop' #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #angelicagown #18thcenturydress #georgianstyle #georgianfashion #amaliajacket #scrooppatterns #1780s #1780sstyle #1780sfashion #costumehistory #historicalcostumer #historicalfashion #historicalcostume #fashionhistory #18thcenturystyle #thedreamstress
