I finally finished my @scrooppatterns #summitdress It's not a difficult pattern at all, it's actually pretty fun and easy, I just smashed up my knee cycling on some black ice halfway through making it and took a few weeks off. It's a medieval inspired pattern, so I was inspired by the colour blocking you often see in tunics/dresses in medieval art and used pattern blocking with the different plaids from a flannel/brushed cotton duvet cover set. This turned out really fun and meant I didn't have to worry about matching plaids on most of the seams. My hair was not behaving so I did what an respectable medieval Jewish widow would do and put on a headscarf Pattern: Summit Dress by Scroop Patterns, View B Fabric: brushed cotton duvet cover and pillow cases by habitat Size: 56 Measurements #54b46w56h #historicalsewing #plussizesewing #fatsewing

Congratulations to Rhys @slipping.stitches who tested the #summitdress pattern for winning Costume Designer of the Year at the Wellington Theatre Awards for his phenomenal work on Lizzie the Musical. Congratulations also to the @toi_costume students who interned on the show and helped create the spectacular Victorian-meets-rock costumes. And his outfit for the ceremony was, naturally, absolutely epic!

I wore my #summitdress to work today, perfect for swooshing round the office 💛 I have two more historical versions planned. A purple wool of view a and another that I will modify to have long sleeves and a key hole neckline to wear as a sark under an apron dress for a Viking costume. And maybe I will modify the pattern to make a sleeveless version in black linen for summer swishiness #makepatternsworkhard

Obviously the next book I need to show you from the #scroopsewinglibrary is ‘Medieval Garments Reconstructed.’ It was one of my primary research sources for the Summit Dress, and it’s the book you should use if you want to make a historically accurate version of the Summit. MGR has so much information on making an accurate version that it even gives information on spinning your own wool & weaving fabric just like the original Greenland garments! There are also detailed guides to the stitches used to construct the garments, and to techniques like tablet woven edges. The bulk of the book, and the most interesting part from my perspective as a patternmaker, are the scale diagrams of the original garments and patterns, complete with photos of the garment, and the recreation. You can see that they show what is original cloth, and what is the conjectured pattern shape when pieces are missing, or when the shape of the cloth has been significantly warped over time. I had such an interesting time playing with 1/2 scale versions of the patterns, figuring out elements in common that I could use to create one pattern that looked good and fit well. I have one VERY important tip if you are buying yourself a copy of this book online - especially if you are buying from Amazon. Build a little into your budget to also buy an anti-racist book at the same time. When I bought my copy google went “Oh, you bought a book about Vikings (no, it’s not…). You know who likes Vikings? Racists and neo-nazis! You must be a racist neo-nazi! Here are ads for some really gross, scary books…” I quickly ordered Ijeoma Oluo’s ‘So You Want to Talk About Race’ and ‘Cultural Appropriation in Fashion and Entertainment’ which cleaned up my algorithm. As someone who is a historical costumer, I’m very aware of the overlap between historical costuming and (at best) romanticising the past. I think it’s really important that we actively work to make sure things linked to this hobby DON’T become linked to hate, and to pretending that the past was wonderful. It was not. #historicalcostuming #historicalcostumingbooks #summitdress #scrooppatterns #anti-racism #vintagestylenotvintagevalues

I had the honor of being a pattern tester for @scrooppatterns “Summit Dress”! Their pattern is super easy to understand and the techniques needed are all broken down in easy to understand instructions! ☀️ I chose a rayon / linen fabric from @joann_stores which ended up not being the best choice. Rayon likes to grow, or stretch out, a lot. For days sometimes. So I ended up recutting my pattern pieces a handful of times before the pieces stopped growing. But I love this color and the fabric is nice to wear in the California summer heat. 💜 The pattern is now on sale on @scrooppatterns website which I will link in my story! It’s really cool to support small business, especially for sewing patterns! So go check it out! 😉 •• ••• •• #scrooppatterns #summitdress #patterntesting #patterntester #pattern #sewingpattern #historicalfashion #modernhistoricalfashion

The Summit Dress is here! I always love pattern testing for @scrooppatterns, because the end result is always so stunning! I love the floofy sleeves, and IT HAS POCKETS!!!! 😍😍😍😍 The dress is so comfy for history bounding, or dressing up or down with accessories! I love a versatile garment. You can probably tell I like the swiss waist combo the best 😂 To make my dress version, you can make View B! Working on my version of the new #summitdress from @scrooppatterns This will be view b with the lantern sleeves and a shape I’ve never made before. I’m making it in a beautiful silk georgette from @wearethefabricstore NOT one of the recommended fabrics but sometimes Leimomi doesn’t save me from myself and lets the fabric shelves speak to me. I have a much more appropriate blue wool that I’m going to make into view a which will be for my historical wardrobe

The days before we went to Mount Baldy, we got a snow storm and we didn’t know if we were going to be able to go to the summit. We wanted to hike the loop originally, but the snow that we got in the previous days we said: let’s try at least the summit and have a photo shoot all dressed up there!!! And up we went, we had a few small scrambling sections that were amazing to climb and step by step we made it to the summit. As soon as we arrived there we started changing to our fancy dresses and some even brought fancy shoes!!! I just brought my dress and I forgot that my hair gets super wild when I sweat and when I look at my pictures I always laugh thinking: I had a nest over my head!! 🤣. We had lots of fun at the summit before to come down!!! #mountbaldy #hikingdress #fancyhike #summitdress #kananaskis #explorekananaskis #travelalberta #hikealberta #alberta #albertaviews #albertahike #canada #travel #rockymountains #explorecanada #hike #abhike #hikeab #hikecanada #neverstopexploring #beautifuldestinations #phonephotography #osprey #fjallraven #keenboots

There's been a lot of loss in my life. Loss that I resisted, loss I tried to hold onto, loss that was pried out of my bloody hands. One thing I learned this past year was that if I stopped trying to grab for all of the lost things, that maybe my hands could be open instead. Not that there is something wrong with grabbing for the lost things. It's a process. But, maybe, instead of closing my hands with angry fists, I could open them up. Soften them. There is so much pain in the letting go of what is gone, but it is even more painful to close your hands, close your soul, close off towards anything good that could come and occupy a little bit of that empty space. Sometimes it's more painful to receive good than it is to receive the bad. So we close off the good. This past summer, I learned that loss creates a space. By golly, it's a space I never wanted, which is why it's a loss, but the beauty side of the pain, if we are open, is the space the loss makes to receive... good. So here I am with my sticky fingers for all the things I lost, hoping for good to come, and waiting to receive that which couldn't have come to me in any other way. I'm waiting for the good. I love layering, especially with a combo this comfy! The sweater is the #StarCrossedSweater pattern by @jaqcieslak. I didn't knit it, as it was made by the glorious @rocksteadyemme. Time for another #summitdress tester make - this one in silk! 💛 @ninavirgo is one of my best friends, the editor for Scroop Patterns (any mistakes are mine for rearranging things after she does her final edit!), and is one of a group of people who tests almost every single one of my patterns to ensure the fit is consistent across the whole pattern line. It’s good to have testers who have never worked with a Scroop Pattern before, but it’s also good to have repeat testers. And it’s particularly good to have Nina, because I get to see her work through the whole fitting and making process in person. Plus, we often help each other choose fabrics for her make and the pattern samples! In this instance she messaged me and said “I have a really bad idea you may need to talk me out of...” And I responded “?” And she said “Remember that goldenrod checked silk from @wearethefabricstore? I’m thinking of using it for my Summit Dress....” And I replied “OMG, that will look amazing! And will be a nightmare to work with…” And it was, but it does! She made View B, and has already worn it to work multiple times. Success! Using such a tricky fabric did mean that she got to point of lots of places in the pattern where I could give tips on how to make it easier in difficult materials. #scrooppatterns #herjolfsnespatterns #herjolfsnesgarments #historybounding #medievalinspired #lanternsleeves #scroopsummitdress #sizeinclusivesewingpatterns #historicallyinspiredsewingpatterns #patterntesting #bestpatterntestersever #digitalpatterns #sewyourownslowfashion #thanksithaspockets #ithaspockets #handmadefashion #sewinglove #sustainablefashion #indiesewing #sew #sewingproject #memade #memadeeveryday

So many people made blue version of the #summitdress, but three testers also made pink versions, which delights me, because it’s stealth #disneybounding Aurora’s “Pink! No blue!” dress. It’s particularly perfect given the Medieval inspiration behind the #summitdress. Alexa of @socalcostumes picked this especially delicious shade of orchid pink for her Summit, but I’m afraid it gave her as much trouble as Aurora’s dress gave the fairy godmothers. Her fabric is a rayon blend crepe, and it streeeetched as it hung, ending up with a dress with far more ease than the pattern intended. There’s now a note in the pattern about choosing stable fabrics, or going down a size if your fabric has a lot of give. That’s one of the many things testers help with! I’m hugely grateful for Alexa’s patience as we worked through the “how is there so much more ease!” issues, and I’m so pleased that she still likes the finished result. Time for a View A test version of the #summitdress and isn’t it fabulous! Carmen’s amazing use of colour and the way she plays with fun silhouettes instantly captivated me when I discovered her @idlehabitat instagram page. She did not disappoint in her interpretation of the Summit. I love the vivid emerald green linen + cotton blend she used. It has the perfect balance of structure and drapery for this dress, and gives the folds an almost sculptural quality. Carmen wove her belt herself on her inkle loom (goals!) and added embroidered details to her dress - head over to her instagram to see the it. (and the rest of her gorgeous wall ). I love this dress! It's a test version of the newly released Summit Dress from @scrooppatterns. I recently read Medieval Garments Reconstructed and have been very interested in creating something similar to the clothing found in Herjolfnes. Following the Summit Dress pattern was a great way to do just that, with the ease of modern sewing techniques! In these photos, I wore a belt that I wove on my inkle loom. I also added a bit of embroidery to the collar, cuffs, and hem. Swipe to the end to see the embroidery up close! I made View A in size 54. (Some updates were made to the final pattern after testing.) I'm quite tall, but I didn't add any extra length to this version. I find this length practical and I know that it will be a great addition to my wardrobe. Still, I'm already dreaming of a floor-length version! I'm also eager to try the lantern sleeve option. The dress shows up quite blue here, but it's actually a vibrant green cotton/linen. It's very cheerful! 💚 #SummitDress #ScroopSummitDress #HistoryBounding #PlusSizeSewing #PlusSizeFashion #QueerSewing #QueerFashion #Maker #HandmadeWardrobe

Who’s ready to see the gorgeous #summitdress tester makes? I’m starting with the beautiful View B with the View A full-length skirt that @walkthethread made, because her dress looks like she should be holidaying on some glorious Greek Island. Can’t you just imagine her lounging by the Aegean Sea? The lantern sleeves might not be as structural in her light cotton muslin, but the overall effect is so dreamy! She says: “I really enjoyed learning (despite the frustration with the fabric) to sew a godet. And these were my first lantern sleeves! Love them!” Her favourite part of the pattern is the option to sew the front and back godets with and without seams - an option that is based on the extant Medieval examples, which often have seams because the fabric wasn’t wide enough to cut pieces like the godet on the fold. “I love when design decisions are rooted in legacy. It's funny how I first I disliked it because it was an added seam that felt unnecessary, and now it's my favourite part of the design! I love when our garments tell stories.“ She made a Size 32 Belen’s favourite part of the pattern is the godets. MY favourite part of her photos is her demonstrating that she can do push-ups while wearing it: a very important factor in making garments! (tbh, I’m not sure I can do push ups no matter what I’m wearing!) Thank you Belen for your excellent help as a tester - you provided such fantastically detailed and thorough feedback! #scrooppatterns #herjolfsnespatterns #herjolfsnesgarments #historybounding #medievalinspired #lanternsleeves #scroopsummitdress #sizeinclusivesewingpatterns #historicallyinspiredsewingpatterns #patterntesting #bestpatterntestersever

Let’s talk lantern sleeves! When I was developing the Summit Dress pattern I knew I wanted a second sleeve option, but wasn’t immediately sure what it should be. Should I go the super simple route, and just make one a very short sleeve, and the other a full length medieval sleeve? I trialled a sleeveless version, but it would have required a complete re-draft of the bodice section. I thought about a bishop sleeve. I do love bishop sleeves. But then my friend @ninavirgo suggested lantern sleeves. Ooooh… I hesitated, because lantern sleeves are such a pain to grade. But after making a trail, I was sold. So, here you go! Lantern sleeves! Worth the hassle of grading! I love how they echo the structural fullness of the dress: volume achieved through geometry and seaming, rather than gathers or pleats. Hope you love them too, and huge thanks to Nina for the awesome design idea! #scrooppatterns #summitdress #scroopsummitdress #lanternsleeves #sewingpatternswithlanternsleeves #medievalsewingpatterns #medievalhistorybounding #medievalinspired #historybounding

Spotlight on View A of the Summit Dress! (which is 15% off all this week!) View A is the closest version to the extant late 14th and early 15th century garments excavated in Herjolfsnes in Greenland that inspired the Summit Pattern. It’s full length, for maximum swish. The elbow length straight sleeves look like a standard modern sleeve from the front, but the back has a secret: a side-back seam (no underarm seam in these sleeves!) and an inset gusset. The seam placement and gusset are directly based on medieval garments, and are something I really wanted to include in the pattern. It’s such a fun, unusual feature. It’s also practical: the inset gusset allows a wide range of movement, and moving the seam from the underarm to the back arm can be more comfortable for people with sensory issues. Te KuraHuia @theebadmanawahine is wearing View A in Size 40. She is 5'6''/167cm. Her Summit Dress is made up in lightweight herringbone twill 100% wool fabric. The fabric is actually some of the last fabric from NZ’s last wool mill, which I’ve hoarded since it closed down a decade ago. #scrooppatterns #summitdress #scroopsummitdress #sewingpatternswithlanternsleeves #medievalsewingpatterns #medievalhistorybounding #medievalinspired #historybounding #herjolfsnesgarments #herjolfsnespatterns

Day 28 of #fallforcostume24 hosted by @sew_through_time is mirrors. Ever since I bought this little tripod I have stopped taking awkward mirror selfies to show off my costume progress. The tripod, with flexible legs, and timer on my phone also allows me to make photoshoots with myself, which to be honest is sometimes better than trying to get help from someone who is neither a photographer nor a costumer and don't understand what I want to show off. The photo of me in my #summitdress is taken that way. #fallforcostume

Who is ready for another pretty-pretty-princess pink version of the #summitdress 💖 @wai.iti.ridge really did make a princess version of the Summit! Her use of the lace patterned fabric on the inset godet and lower lantern sleeve is genius. The triangular shape of the godet suddenly evokes a decorative underskirt, and the matching lower sleeve looks like a lace undersleeve. The first best part of this is that her small daughter loves the dress and wants one for herself 💕 Maybe a child sized version of the Summit Dress is in Scroop’s future… And the second best part? The whole thing is made from recycled sheets! Anna’s creative fabric re-use is one of the things that really stood out to me in her testing application. I love her commitment to sustainability, and the fun way she uses materials. All her garments look so intentional - and her Summit is no exception. My main modification of the #summitdress from @scrooppatterns was to lengthen the sleeves. I made that by adding a lower section, that I made by measuring my forearm. The end of the sleeve had a facing, instead of hem to keep it nice and pointy. #scrooppatterns #sleeves #homesewing

First make of the year complete! One of the goals I had in mind when I went fabric shopping in Paris was to find something good for the Summit Dress from @scrooppatterns, and this embroidered linen definitely fit the bill. The main modification I made was having to shorten the dress to get it to fit on the fabric I had available, so it’s knee length instead of the intended mid-calf, and I should have done an FBA but didn’t, so it’s got a bit of a high-low hem going on. The fabric was a pre-cut 3m length from one of the coupon stores in Montmartre so I was a little bit shy of the pattern requirements. I also made the Gemma belt from @forgetmenotpatterns to go with the dress…I like it with or without the belt, but it’s always good to have options! I’ve also included a closeup of the embroidery, featuring my quality control supervisor hard at work. #vancouversews #scroopsummitdress #scrooppatterns #forgetmenotpatterns #fmngemma

I can’t do too many pink princess Summit Dresses in a row, so let’s do a major mood change and go gothy! 🖤 Kaity of @kaitybower chose black for her View B Summit Dress test so that she had an ready-made outfit for witchy Halloween fun. Brilliant! She also describes the pattern as “unique and delightfully witchy”, so there’s a theme! 🐈⬛ 🎃 Her fabric is a black cotton gauze which ended up stretching as she worked with it, but which gives a delightful soft drape to the dress and the lantern sleeves, rather than a stiffer more sculptural silhouette. She made a Size 46, and altered the pattern slightly to have a stronger slope to the shoulders - her typical adjustment. Her feedback was so helpful in refining the fabric suggestions so that you don’t end up making it with a fabric that just keeps growing. Huge thank you to Kaity both for the excellent feedback, and the fabulous Halloween idea. 🖤 I sense a hashtag coming on… #summitdresscoven perhaps? Now I just have to decide what kind of witchy Summit Dress I want for myself! Or maybe I can get away with being a different witch for every day of Halloweek… 🎃 🎃 🎃 🧙♀️ #scrooppatterns #herjolfsnespatterns #herjolfsnesgarments #historybounding #medievalinspired #lanternsleeves #scroopsummitdress #sizeinclusivesewingpatterns #historicallyinspiredsewingpatterns #patterntesting #bestpatterntestersever #digitalpatterns#sewyourownslowfashion #thanksithaspockets #ithaspockets #handmadefashion #instasew #sewcialist #sewinglove #sustainablefashion #fashionmadebyyou #indiesewing #sew #sewingproject #memade #memadeeveryday #diyfashion

I got to test a new @scrooppatterns pattern based on a medieval dress. I made the shorter, lower neck version with the trumpet sleeves, because everyone knows I can’t resist a statement sleeve. I love working with Leimomi at Scroop because she’s so thoughtful and encouraging. This was no exception and I feel she took my feedback into consideration for the final product. She also made a special blog post for how to add a bust dart, which is extremely useful if you are making this and have a full bust. It helps the hem be more even and also allows you to make it in a size that matches your high bust / armpit area more closely. https://thedreamstress.com/2024/08/how-to-add-a-bust-dart-to-the-scroop-summit-dress/ I made my dress in a small poly/crepe that is gloriously drapey! . . . . . #scroopPatterns #SensibleShoes #HistoryBounding #ScroopPatternsSummit #ScroopSummitDress #PDFPatterns #PlusSizeSewist #FatSewingClub #RenFaireSewing #SewingForCurves #FatSewist #SewistsOfInstagram #CurvySewists #IMakeMyOwnClothes #ChicagoSewist

(tbh, I’m not sure I can do push ups no matter what I’m wearing!) Who is ready for another pretty-pretty-princess pink version of the #summitdress 💖 @wai.iti.ridge really did make a princess version of the Summit! Now I need to go make myself a two-fabric Summit… And maybe find a small child to try on sizing samples for me… #scrooppatterns #herjolfsnespatterns #herjolfsnesgarments #historybounding #medievalinspired #lanternsleeves #scroopsummitdress #sizeinclusivesewingpatterns #historicallyinspiredsewingpatterns #patterntesting #bestpatterntestersever #digitalpatterns #sewyourownslowfashion #thanksithaspockets #ithaspockets #handmadefashion #sewinglove #sustainablefashion #indiesewing #sew #sewingproject #memade #memadeeveryday

The Summit Dress launch sale may be over, but I still have some gorgeous test versions of the pattern to show you! Here’s a beautiful View A Summit Dress, modelled against the backdrop of a Swedish summer. ☀️ 🍃 Madame Grimm @loiseaudelapluie was anything but grim to have as a tester! The only thing about her feedback and stunning Summit that make me even the littlest bit sad is that it isn’t in my wardrobe. This patterned weave is so pretty, and so evocative of the medieval aesthetic. You just need a knight and a dragon 🐉 🗡️ 👑 (as someone who grew up reading The Paper Bag Princess, I am 100% convinced Madame Grimm is the one doing the rescuing!) I particularly love the drape of the fabric. I had the hardest time choosing which photos of Sonya’s @sonya_is_sewing View B Summit Dress to show you. Her dress is so gorgeous and her photos are all so pretty! She used a cotton lawn for her dress, and the weight is just perfect for a summer version that will flutter in the breeze. I love the way the print shows the seaming and grainlines of the dress. She says “This is a pattern I can make again and again. It went together quickly and quite easily. The sleeves went in like butter! I don’t think I’ve ever been able to set in sleeves so easily.” 💛💛💛 Sonya made a Size 40 Don’t forget, you have just 34 hours left to get 15% off the Summit Dress! #scrooppatterns #herjolfsnespatterns #herjolfsnesgarments #historybounding #medievalinspired #lanternsleeves #scroopsummitdress #sizeinclusivesewingpatterns #historicallyinspiredsewingpatterns #patterntesting #bestpatterntestersever #digitalpatterns #handmadefashion #instasew #sewcialist #sewinglove #sustainablefashion #fashionmadebyyou #indiesewing #sew #sewingproject #memade #memadeeveryday #diyfashion #isewmyownclothes #sewsewsew #sewersgonnasew #sewersofinstagram #sewmuchfun #slowfashion #instasew

I think clothing should be non-gendered: anyone can wear whatever they want. But non-gendered clothing too often means 'girls wearing stuff that has traditionally been masculine'. That's not non-gendered! That's treating male as the default gender. So I love it when guys wear clothing that has traditionally been coded feminine, and project "Heck yeah, I'm a man in a dress, because dresses are awesome and swishy and who wouldn't want to wear them sometimes?" Rhys @slipping.stitches is my hero for his enthusiastic inclusion of skirts and dresses (because they are awesome and swishy!) in his wardrobe, along with trousers and greatcoats and anything else he fancies. So when he applied to test the Summit Dress I was very pleased! (Full disclosure, he’s also a former student of mine😁) Rhys made View A with the View B sleeves in Size 52. He cut the dress exactly at the View A length as given in the pattern, because he knew he wanted a calf-length dress, and he is 1.91m/6’4’’ - and what is ankle length on the 5’6’’ height the pattern is designed for would be calf on him! He used a lightweight linen damask from @wearethefabricstore with a pattern of leaves in bright teal. The only change he would make to the pattern is to add width to the shoulders (fair!) He is a little broader in the shoulders than the Scroop fit model. 😉 Thank you Rhys for helping me confirm that the pattern really does fit a wide range of bodies! #scrooppatterns #herjolfsnespatterns #herjolfsnesgarments #historybounding #medievalinspired #lanternsleeves #scroopsummitdress #sizeinclusivesewingpatterns #historicallyinspiredsewingpatterns #patterntesting #bestpatterntestersever #digitalpatterns #sewyourownslowfashion #thanksithaspockets #ithaspockets #handmadefashion #sewinglove #sustainablefashion #indiesewing #sew #sewingproject #memade #memadeeveryday

It’s a bit of a cliché that French women always look chic, but here is Pat proving that sometimes clichés have their basis in truth, because this is a very chic version of the Summit Dress. I love her black sash on blue dress. I’m trying to think of a word to describe the combination that isn’t chic, so shall we say that it’s sophisticated? Her red belted version is equally delightful! She gave really helpful feedback on the dress too. The problem with being a pattern designer is that you see all the versions of your patterns that get made in absolutely fantastic fabric, and then you want your own version in that same fabric! Case in point: @mezzo.jessi’s gorgeous View B of the Summit Dress in this scrolls and florals cotton print is giving me serious fabric envy. I would be her dress twin in a heartbeat! And you know what the fabric is? SHEETS! Brilliant! How much do we love creative fabric usage? She says “I really enjoy how quickly it went together, and I like the overall loose fit! I love the sleeves, pockets!!!!, and the swoosh factor! I didn't have anything medieval inspired in my wardrobe yet, so this is a welcome addition for historybounders!” Yessssss. More medieval #historybounding please! Jessi made a Size 48, and her feedback and testing was as thoughtful and meticulous as ever. There’s a reason I’ve asked her to test multiple times!

Time for another gorgeous Summit Dress tester make! I had really hoped at least one tester would make their Summit Dress out of a fabric with a larger pattern, and @Aly_lynch came through with this beautiful floral. To make it even better, she used a quilting cotton. I always love when at least one tester uses quilting cotton, because it’s such a popular fabric. It’s great to see what a garment looks like in it! It’s also a perfect fabric for the Summit: stable, but with enough drape to hang beautifully. Aly liked that it was “nice intuitive make. It felt as if the pattern had a nice flow.” She says she “will wear the living heck out of it as a kitchen witchy dress.” #goals She made a View A with the View B hem length in Size 40, and felt that while it was lovely and comfortable at that size, the 4’’ of ease in the bust meant you could also go down a size for a more fitted look.

#fallforcostume Day One: Intro Hello to all the new people who have followed me on this account! My name is Holly and I do a lot of historical costuming, knitting and generally historically-adjacent things. I'm studying museum management this year and in my spare time have a small but growing historically inspired business called @tinkertonsdrygoods and have a YouTube page where I share my costuming projects. Fun fact! This photo was taken by the lovely @heytheregeorgiangirl with an antique 1900s camera from a Great War event from last weekend. Increasingly I'm trying to work towards historical clothes, practical things that look like they walked out of time. Skirt is @scrooppatterns Kilbirnie Skirt made with stash fabric, made for me by @sylviebonniere Suffrage buttons from @regimental_stores Pandemic mask made according to specifications from 1918 (Though cheesecloth is very breathable, this was an interpretive tool only) #kilbirnieskirt #scrooppatterns #19teensfashion #womenssuffrage #livinghistory #wwireenacting #historicalcostuming #costube #womeninlivinghistory

One more piece of my Edwardian outfit checked off the list! ☑️ I was fortunate enough to be chosen to test the recently released Ettie Petticoat pattern by @scrooppatterns It comes with four views covering 1890 to 1920 and this is View A suitable for 1890-1910 🧵I gotta be honest this took what 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 like forever to make. Not because it was difficult but because I’m impatient and it turns out doing lace insertion (partially) on a treadle sewing machine is kind of tedious so I kept taking breaks and dragging this make out. lol I’m so in love with the end result though! Next I’ll be making View D to wear with my #kilbirnieskirt 🧵 All of my fabric and notions are from @joann_stores #scrooppatterns #ettiepetti #petticoat #ettiepetticoat

I made a new skirt! This is the Kilbirnie Skirt from Scroop patterns, and since it's a historically accurate late 1910's pattern I decided to style it both in a 1918 style and a modern style. I even wore historical underpinnings for the 1918 version (which was a mistake because I didn't make it to my corsetted measurements), and looked up hairstyles. Now, most of the pictures I've seen from 1918 they did stick with plain white masks, but I refuse to believe there wasn't some ingenious seamstress who made some matching masks when making a new dress or skirt or blouse. Je refuse The blouse from the 1918 version is the Armistice Blouse from Folkwear Patterns, and the blouse from the modern version is the Robin dress also from Scroop Patterns, and yes I do wish I'd checked the buttons in a mirror before I took photos because otherwise that's a great photo Oh, nearly forgot to add, the fabric is a lightweight linen/cotton plain weave from Amothreads #kilbirnieskirt #scrooppatterns #folkwearpatterns #armisticeblouse #historicalsewing #curvysewing #plussizesewing #ddfacemask

Scrolla ner för svenska. ~•~*~•~ ~•~*~•~ ~•~*~•~ ~•~*~•~ I’m back to sewing historical clothing, diving into the 1910’s for a ball this fall. And as we all know a new period starta with new underwear. This is Scroop patterns Ettie Petticoat in view B (1909 -1914) and Wearing historys 1910’s brassiere. I’ve modified the later, taking out a lot of seam allowance as I’m a bust 35” and the pattern is single size for a bust 38”. The garments are made from vintage cotton bedsheets that was in my stash and a lot of different lace (also stash). I feel that sheets are a bit to stiff for the petticoat, but I hope it will work. 📒Ettie Petticoat by @scrooppatterns and 1910’s edwardian brassiere by @wearinghistory The chemise is also wearing history (1917 combination underwear, made two years ago), the corset is true vintage. #ettiepetticoat #wearinghistorypatterns #scrooppatterns #annatextilecraft #stashdown #stashdown2024 #makingfromthestash #1910sundergarments #1910sunderwear

#historicalsundayundies means a sneak peek at my new #ettiepetticoat - another fantastic pattern from @scrooppatterns I had so much fun with this one, I love so many details, and was able to combine features from the different views to make exactly what I wanted. I’ll feature those later in a blog post. @virgilsfinegoods provides paper copies of #scrooppatterns , which I greatly prefer when making larger items like skirts, gowns, and petticoats (#sewhonestsunday - I get bored of taping so much paper together 😆) … #edwardian #historicalfashion #petticoat #lace #tucksandruffles

New video of me making some 1910s underthings featuring vintage lace and ribbons 🎀. I had the itch to stitch as soon as I saw the new #EttiePetticoat by @scrooppatterns. Mine is view B, early 1910s-style. I’m hoping to get around to making an 1914 dress to go with it soon. My corset is also by Scroop. Combinations are a #WearingHistory pattern. It’s far from perfect but it is FINISHED. Theres a lot of little things “wrong” with this corset but it’s functional! (Or serviceable as they’d say back in the day. lol) It’s a miracle this got finished at all with everything going on in my life/the world currently so yes the waist stays are slightly off in the front but sometimes finished is better than perfect. #persiscorset #scrooppatterns #edwardiancorset #historicalcostuming #historicalsewing #sewing

One of my favourite parts of pattern development is the product photoshoot. Dressing gorgeous models up in gorgeous outfits and then taking them to a gorgeous location to shoot photos? What’s not to love! (and, in case you can’t tell from the photos, the models are also delightful, hilarious people who are just plain awesome to hang around with, in addition to looking fantastic in clothes). One of my other favourite, but much, much harder, parts of pattern development is then choosing which of the resulting photos to show. There are almost always too many good ones! The Persis Corset photoshoot was particularly hard. I swear that Fipe @fipefoai and Te KuraHuia @bbeezxo couldn’t take a bad photo if they tried, and their ability to find the best light was unbelievable. 💛 Every time I was photographing one of them I’d turn around to discover that the other one had picked the most stunning light to hang out in while they waited. Plus, we were in a fabulous venue. The @katherinemansfieldhouse is full of fascinating nooks and crannies, and that aforementioned beautiful light. So here’s a few more photos from the shoot for you to enjoy, because they are too beautiful not to share! #persiscorset #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #patternlaunchsale #corsetpattern #edwardiansewingpattern #edwardiancorset #edwardianfashion #edwardianstyle #historicalcorsetpattern #historicalcorset #1900scorset #1900scorsetpattern

Showcase on Rhia of @rhia_evildressmaker and her beautiful Persis Corset! Rhia’s corset is a great example of blending views and sizes. She combined the View B top and View A hem. Her fabric is a cotton coutil in one of the pale brown shades so popular in corsetry of this period, and she opted for very simple trimming, to keep the corset sleek under outer wear. For sizing, she blended between a 42 and 44, to accomodate a narrow ribcage, and used the Average pattern pieces for the back, and the Slender pattern pieces for the hip, as she has slim hips and a fuller bottom. She used the Small bust pieces. She’s really showing off the ‘hip subdued’ figure that corset ad I showed yesterday promised. You can really see the way this style evolved from the Edwardian straight front in her photos. She liked that “the instructions mentioned I can add more or remove boning if I feel the need, so I chose more in front for bust support and less at the back. “ Thank you Rhia for your detailed feedback. 💛💛💛 #persiscorset #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #bestpatterntestersever #patterntesting #patternlaunchsale #corsetpattern #edwardiansewingpattern #edwardiancorset #edwardianfashion #edwardianstyle #historicalcorsetpattern #historicalcorset #1900scorset #1900scorsetpattern

Today’s tester showcase is Ivy @the_sewlo_artist and her utterly gorgeous pink Persis Corset Ivy made a View A in size 30 with the Large Bust cups and Average Hip flare. I love how striking her corset is (especially against that fabulous wallpaper!). Her corset is coutil flat lined over silk, and she did an incredible job of working with the two layers of fabric. Ivy’s fit is a great demonstration of the work that I put into making sure that the cup sizing works well across sizes. She says “I was concerned while making up the corset that the cup sizes wouldn't scale well for such a small band since a 28E is actually not that large in terms of simple volume. But I am very pleased that the corset fits perfectly! The cup size fits extremely well the the volume is exactly right.” “Incredibly impressed with the variability of the pattern and the flexibility in sizing. I'd love more patterns designed this way in future. Overall this was one of the easiest to construct corsets I've ever made, and I'm incredibly satisfied with the results in terms of fit and ease of construction.” #persiscorset #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #bestpatterntestersever #patterntesting #patternlaunchsale #corsetpattern #edwardiansewingpattern #edwardiancorset #edwardianfashion #edwardianstyle #historicalcorsetpattern #historicalcorset #1900scorset #1900scorsetpattern

Spotlight on View B of the Persis Corset! ⭐️🌸Just four days left to get 10% off the Persis Corset pattern!🌸⭐️ Fipe @fipefoai models a View B Persis made of cotton coutil in ‘drab’,* with bindings in cotton sateen. View B of the Persis has a sweetheart neckline that dips lower between the breast than View A and curves up to sit just above the nipple, a high back neckline, and a bottom hem with a squared-off front hem point, less upward curve over the thighs, and a higher back hemline than View A. While we opted for a simple lace finish for this corset, View B would look spectacular with the fancy pointed lace finish shown in the View A sample! *’Drab’ is a light brown shade. It was one of the most popular corset colours in the late Edwardian era. While it’s a very pretty colour, it is, admittedly, not a very appealing name by modern standards! #persiscorset #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #patternlaunchsale #corsetpattern #edwardiansewingpattern #edwardiancorset #edwardianfashion #edwardianstyle #historicalcorsetpattern #historicalcorset #1900scorset #1900scorsetpattern

I love that hats were often worn atop caps in the 18th century. It makes so much sense: your hat doesn't get sweaty and dirty and stained, and you can simplify your hairstyle so much by covering most of it with a cap. For this event both my bergère hat and cap were borrowed from the wonderful @lindsey__woolsey because my caps were being lent to other people and her bergère matched my sash perfectly. Originally, this textile was an 18th-century chintz – a glazed cotton fabric printed with floral motifs, widely used in fashion and interiors around 1780. For this project, I carefully digitized the original museum design, preserving its authentic character, scale, and color palette. ⠀ The fabric you see here is my own historical reconstruction, created for a research project. Soon, it will become a robe à l’anglaise from 1780–1785, made using the @scrooppatterns Aidah Gown pattern. ⠀ Recreating historical textiles is a fascinating way to bridge past and present. Would you wear a dress made from this chintz-inspired fabric? ⠀ #historicaltextiles #18thcenturyfashion #chintz #reproductionfabric #digitalreconstruction #costumemaker #robealanglaise #fashionhistory #historicalsewing #aidahgown #scrooppatterns #researchproject #18thcentury #1780 #historicalcostume #historicalgown #periodcostume #historicallyaccurate #slowfashion #fashionhistory #fashionarchives #behindtheseams #artisanalprocess #historicalfashion

Saturday was a solo con day for me, so this was the only full picture I have of the #breakuprobeanglaise I know more will be coming out as ppl start posting...and that I actually have to take the damn pictures myself, too🤣🤣 I didn't win, or even place at the #crownchampionshipsofcosplay, but I knew that going in. I always know I'm not going to win, but not bc I don't think I'm good enough or "it was rigged" or whatever. And I actually push back against ppl who say that (even as a joke). Fact if the matter is I'm just not "good enough" yet. I've been sewing for well over 2 decades, but only doing cosplay for maybe 4 or 5 years. The winners have put in their 10,000 hrs (and then some), and I'm still working toward that. And I'll get there one day, but it will take time. I also know what I enter isn't what (traditionally) wins. I don't enter big ball gowns, intricately carved armor, giant props with LEDs, or things that are super trendy at the moment. Zero shade to those who do, bc that is you and your passion. My passion is historical shit, niche musicals, something that I find funny, or one of the DOZENS of HUFS rejects I've submitted over the years. Shit not everyone will get, but the ones that do go FERAL (and I love that). That doesn't win/place in cosplay competitions, but they get in, so where is that link to sign up? At the risk of sounding like a high school football coach, my only competition is me. I busted my ass on this and am super proud of it...but I want my next build to be better. Making this entire thing was a challenge, and now I'm ready for another. And don't worry, the Break up Robe Anglaise will be at future cons/events bc I like it, it is comfy, and I worked hard on it. #ofmd #ofmdcosplay #youwearfinethingswell #scrooppatterns #aidahgown #thankyounext #readyforanothergo

Am I this cool, or am I cutting VERY BRIGHT fabric, and looking away from it kinda fucks with my vision. Cutting the fabric & linings, as well as flatlining so many pieces for the #breakuprobeanglaise has been an ongoing process, but I am almost done. Actual sewing has been going on in between, and now we're about to start the bodice. Pray for my sanity! #breakuprobeanglaise #scrooppatterns #aidahgown #eccc #ofmd #ofmdcosplay

I finally got pictures of my finished 18th century Angelica gown on my dress form. I made a sash and some bows out of pink silk that matches pretty well, left from my late Victorian corset. I have the pink on the hat, and made some bows from the stripe for either my hair or the hat. I also added polonaise ties for dancing. I'm ready for @thebridgetownball on Saturday! I'll be making some matching pockets today from the stays fabric. I'm excited to share my latest 18th century gown! This is the @scrooppatterns Angelica gown (1775-90) that I wore to the @costumersofcolor #ChevalierBall. It is made out of teal silk taffeta purchased from @fashion_fabrics_club with a hand embroidered petticoat of light pink silk taffeta from @fabrixsf . The engageantes are cotton mull from @burnleyandtrowbridge with vintage scalloped lace edging. I used a vintage buckle for my belt. My lavender wig is an @ardawigs and I used the 18th Century Hair & Wig Styling book by @demoder to make it with a wig support made by @mutton_dressedas_lamb . It's adorned with silk ribbon flowers that I made. I used extant examples of petticoats from this time period for inspiration for the embroidery on my petticoat. It took much longer than I envisioned to embroider it, so I did it in two stages, with the vine border and flowers in the first stage. I simplified the design with simple flowers and chainstitch embroidery. The last photos are from my county fair and include pics of stage one of the petticoat embroidery. I was honored to not only be awarded a Best of Show for this ensemble, but also the Best of Show Overall and 1st Place People's Choice. I finally finished the @scrooppatterns Frances Rump I needed to be able to wear my new dress--just in time to wear this weekend. 😀 I used all supplies I already had in the house to make it a free project--which means it's stuffed with alpaca fiber I had--not exactly a historical filling. But free is my favorite! It gave my dress a very nice shape, and was very comfortable to wear. My calash bonnet I made and my latest #angelicagown by @scrooppatterns . I added loops and buttons to the back of the gown so I could temporarily bustle it up a la polonaise for skating. The gown is made of a green cotton I got for my birthday. I ended up calling this green and yellow combination "lemons and limes" and decorated a matching bergere with the citruses. I'll wear it again sometime with the bergere and the skirt down The calash bonnet is made with blue silk I also got for my birthday. I actually just looked at photos of them and kinda figured out how they might go together. All makeup and hairstyling products are historical accurate reproductions from @lbcchistorical. Influenced by @opuselenae ‘s Pumpkin Butt, I’ve decided to use up a little more scrap fabric to make a Cheshire Butt! I am also using the @scrooppatterns and I decided to use version B in the medium size. I chose the animated Cheshire because I like the pink and purple combo and I had that on hand. The spotted purple fabric is a scrap that I wanted to use up and vaguely matched. It will be the underside. I used the quilting lines as my seams and this was as far as I got tonight. I chose another scrap for his toothy smile, a checkered white. I haven’t decided yet on yellow or black eyes. #scrooppatterns #cheshire #aliceinwonderland #falserump #paddedbum #scroopfrancesrump #notentirelyhistoricallyaccurate

It’s #memademay again! I won’t be posting every day, but it’s good to look at what I actually wear, what gaps there are in my wardrobe, and how things can mix and match. Mein Up-Cycle Projekt. #ausaltmachneu #upcycling #naehenistwiezaubernkönnen #edwardianfashion #edwardianstyle #scrooppatterns #forresttownlarp

Ah, the joys of pleats. It seems that no matter how careful I am, I always need to modify things with pleats. I know the pleats took up exactly the amount they were supposed to, but the waistband (which is also the right size) isn’t lining up. I know the waistband is correct and that I have to get the skirt to fit it. Which means playing with the pleat size until everything lines up. The likeliest culprit is the weight of the skirt causing some stretch in the top of the panels. Happily, it’s easy enough to fix. #sewing #sewinglife #sewistsofinstagram #sewingproject #sewist #imakemyclothes #sewstagram #makersgonnamake #sewistgonnasew #memade #sewingismytherapy #sewingismyhappyplace #sewingisplaytime #ilovesewing #sewingaddiction #slowfashion #slowfashionstyle #victorian #edwardian #vicwardian #historybounding #historybounder #historyblending #historyblender #scroopfantail #walkingskirt #scrooppatterns #fantailskirt

All the issues are all ironed out! The only thing left is deciding on the length of the skirt and putting fasteners in. The box pleats look a little odd, but I like them! Once the skirt has hung for a bit I can cut the hem down for finishing and then I have a new skirt! 🙌 #sewing #sewinglife #sewistsofinstagram #sewingproject #sewist #imakemyclothes #sewstagram #makersgonnamake #sewistgonnasew #memade #sewingismytherapy #sewingismyhappyplace #sewingisplaytime #ilovesewing #sewingaddiction #slowfashion #slowfashionstyle #victorian #edwardian #vicwardian #historybounding #historybounder #historyblending #historyblender #scroopfantail #walkingskirt #scrooppatterns #fantailskirt

I’m finally getting into the wool that I ordered! That lovely red wool from Fabric Turkey Shop on Etsy is being made into the #scrooppatterns #fantailskirt. I find wool to be a little wiggly, and very static-y, so I’m interlining with cotton. I figure the wool itself will be thick enough for me to need to change up the waistband that a little more won’t hurt it. Added bonus, I can put all the markings on the interlining and not have to worry about the wool being too fuzzy to hold marks. Being a Victorian walking skirt, some of the panels are huge and require piecing. My favorite 🤮 So we’re just going to ignore that little corner bite… I can totally cover that with a facing! #sewing #sewinglife #sewistsofinstagram #sewingproject #sewist #imakemyclothes #sewstagram #makersgonnamake #sewistgonnasew #memade #sewingismytherapy #sewingismyhappyplace #sewingisplaytime #ilovesewing #sewingaddiction #slowfashion #slowfashionstyle #victorian #edwardian #vicwardian #historybounding #historybounder #historyblending #historyblender #scroopfantail #walkingskirt

See ya 2022! And probably costuming. This and my other Edwardian outfit were both super fun projects but I don’t think getting all dressed up with no place to go is for me. Is it a dress? No! It’s my new sewing obsession: making a top and a skirt in the same fabric so it looks like a dress, but skipping all those pesky fit problems that come with being full busted, small waisted and short torsoed! This is the top of the Charm Patterns Lamour Dress, combined with the Scroop Patterns Fantail Skirt. I made the skirt earlier as part of my summer suit, but I had about a meter of the poplin fabric left. So I hacked the top off the Lamour Dress and added a couple of centimeters to the length so it could function as a stand alone top. I love that it really looks like a dress but that I can mix and match it with different items in my wardrobe. @gertie18 @scrooppatterns #charmpatterns #charmpatternsbygertie #lamourdress #scrooppatterns #scroopfantail #fantail #fantailskirt #sewretro #retrosewing #wesewretro #retrostyle #retrostyling #wesewvintage #retroinspired #sewvintage #vintagesewing #vintagestyle #vintagestyling #pinup #pinupsewing #pinupstyle #naaien #naaienisleuk #sewbusty

I’m not really doing #memademay2019 but I keep hoping to carve enough time out that I can use for sewing that I’d have enough clothes in my closet that I could participate one day. Next year perhaps. But since this is likely the last time this month I will wear this top I have to share it - it’s a current favorite of mine! It’s a #scrooppatterns Ngiao top made out of a jersey rather than a woven. Did you know that the Ngaio Blouse has two namesakes: a person and a plant! It’s named after Ngaio Marsh, the famed mystery novelist who was one of the "Queens of Crime", along with Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Margery Allingham. It’s also named after the ngaio tree, Myoporum laetum. ’Laetum’ means cheerful, pleasant or bright. Who wants to see another beautiful plaid Tara Pinafore? I’m not a big youtube watcher, but I love @misscasca Crafting with Casca’s channel because 1) she makes fabulous things (umm, hello, Sandworm draught excluder!?!) 🐛 2) her channel is really low key and approachable and 3) she sounds a bit like one of my favourite people in the whole world, so just listening to her makes me happy! 💛 I would say her Tara pinafore is just like her channel – fabulous and approachable, with some unexpected hidden fun secrets, like her Lord of the Rings pockets, and some beautiful finishing, like the pattern matching from her pinafore front to her straps. Casca actually made two versions and says “I really like it, the pinafore is super cute and both of the ones I’ve made/am making will become regular parts of my wardrobe.” Just what I hope for as a pattern maker! ♥️ Her Tara is Size 38, and the fabric is a wool blend. Final hours to treat yourself to the Seatoun & Tara patterns 15%! 🍁 🍃 Get the digital pattern at ScroopPatterns.com, or pre-order the paper pattern at VirgilsFineGoods.com 🍁🍃 #scrooptara #historybounding #edwardianhistorybounding #pinaforesewingpattern #pinaforepattern #vintageinspiredsewing #jumperdress #sewingwithcorduroy #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #patternlaunch #bestpatterntestersever #yesithaspockets #bigpocketftw #sewingpatternswithpockets #skirtpatternswithpockets #autumnsewing #skirtpatternswithelasticwaists #slowfashion #sewyourownslowfashion

From one gorgeous corduroy skirt, to another! Steph of @stephanie_saurus was one of the first testers to share her finished make, and it came at the perfect time. I was at the point of the patternmaking process where I was just completely over it (it happens!). Her photos made me fall in love with the Tara and Seatoun all over again, and gave me the push I needed to keep going. Isn’t her printed needlecord just divine, especially with that top? Steph gave some very helpful feedback on how the Tara fits at the smaller end of the size range, helping me to achieve a perfect fit there. She says “the skirt is easily adjusted to accommodate for any fit issues and is both comfortable and stylish. It’s a simple shape but with added complexity for statement pockets.” She made a Tara Size 30, View B. I am so in love with @itsmadelinedesigns leaf green corduroy Seatoun Skirt, and the Selina Blouse she's paired it with! 🍃 💚 It's the perfect blend of texture, pattern, and simplicity. Oh, and there's a secret to the fine wale cotton corduroy she used for the skirt. It's a recycled curtain! Fabulous fabric re-use ftw! Her thoughts on the pattern? "As usual, an excellently researched and executed pattern. It’s elegant and easy to style, and I’m looking forward to making another version down the road with different pockets. I also want to mix and match pockets between this pattern and the Kilbirnie skirt pattern! " Yessss! I'm so excited about people mixing and matching between patterns! She made View B in Size 32 and is 5'5". She raised the pockets 3/8''/1cm to fit her arm length. BTW, @itsmadelinedesigns makes stuff for clients, so if you’re on the East Coast of the US and need someone to make you a 1910s wardrobe…. I absolutely love the Tara that Julia of @mariecurious made! Orange is such an under-rated colour. Her orange linen is both autumn and summer appropriate, and utterly perfect for the Hallowe’en season. If Halloween-bounding is a thing, it’s (in the best possible way!) a Jack-o-Lantern skirt. An extremely chic Jack-o-Lantern skirt! 🎃 And now I’m going to go make myself a Bat Tara… 🦇 Julia provided super helpful feedback on clarifying both the pocket and the clever-but-tricky elastic back waistband installation. Her overall thoughts on the pattern: “Fantastic! It's a quick and easy make with enough unique details to keep it interesting, and I can see it becoming a wardrobe staple.” Julia made View B in size 48. She is 5'5" BTW, I have followed Julia’s IG for years and only when I wrote this post did I realise what her handle means 🤦♀️ So clever! (not me, obviously) Both the Seatoun & Tara are 15% off this week! 🎃 Treat yourself to the digital pattern at ScroopPatterns.com, or pre-order the paper pattern at VirgilsFineGoods.com 🎃 #scrooptara #historybounding #edwardianhistorybounding #pinaforesewingpattern #pinaforepattern #vintageinspiredsewing #jumperdress #sewingwithcorduroy #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #patternlaunch #bestpatterntestersever #yesithaspockets #bigpocketftw #sewingpatternswithpockets #skirtpatternswithpockets #skirtpatternswithelasticwaists #slowfashion #sewyourownstyle #sewyourownclothes #sewyourownslowfashion

I’m so excited about all the gorgeous tester makes from the Seatoun and Tara patterns that I have to start showing them to you right away! I wish I’d made one of the Tara samples in corduroy, because some of the testers did, and they look SO GOOD! Case in point: Brianne’s @brianneopal utterly adorable Tara Pinafore made from cat patterned corduroy! It’s so delightful I would immediately break my ban on no-cat-patterned-fabric (lest I become the crazy cat lady who only ever gets given cat themed things) to make myself one exactly like it if I could get the fabric. She even did perfect little cat buttons! 💛 The lightweight fine wale cord is perfect for this pattern. It has enough structure to support the shape of the bodice and show off the lines of the skirt, without being too bulky for the waistband. Brianne made the Tara View A (pinafore) with View B length and pockets, in Size 34. She is 5’6”. I’m very grateful for Brianne’s very thoughtful feedback - she helped me make the waistband construction much clearer, and the pinafore bodice pattern piece is now the exact length she adjusted hers bodice to. Many thanks to Brianne! Both the Seatoun & Tara are 15% off this week! 🌸 Get the digital pattern at ScroopPatterns.com, or pre-order the paper pattern at VirgilsFineGoods.com 🌸 #scrooptara #historybounding #edwardianhistorybounding #pinaforesewingpattern #pinaforepattern #vintageinspiredsewing #jumperdress #sewingwithcorduroy #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #patternlaunch #bestpatterntestersever

I guess I've made a lot more things than I originally thought! Today I took some time to organize my patterns into a system that should work better for me. Modern patterns are on the left, organized by type. Historical patterns are on the right organized by era, then type. It's shocking to realize out of this full drawer, I haven't made 7 of them. Next up- sorting through the commercial patterns, and then making some shorts for the kiddo. #twigandtalepatterns #blacksnailpatterns #scrooppatterns #burnleyandtrowbridgepatterns #wildflowerdesigns

It’s here!!! I was so grateful to help test the #SeatounSkirt by @scrooppatterns !!! It’s a super cute skirt that is based on skirts from 1910s! I went sort of 70s with my styling of it due to wanting to see if I could bring it into modern wear and because in Louisiana it’s like 80 million degrees out. So go grab the skirt now! A wee update on the Frances Rump pattern. Last week the free Frances Rump pattern got hit by a bot attack. 😣 Dozens of copies of the pattern were ‘bought’ by accounts with generic male names all within 20 minutes, and all from the same 3 IP addresses. It’s not entirely clear what the bots were after, but apparently it’s a common attack on free items. We’ve updated a bunch of settings to make sure everything is secure. One of the things we’ve done to discourage further attacks is to change the Frances from a free pattern to a ‘Choose Your Own Price’ pattern. There are a range of options for prices from ‘free’ to ‘look I just really love your patterns and want to pay an insane amount for this one to show it’ (look, a poor patternmaker can hope!) So the pattern is still there, it’s still available for nothing - or you can choose to pay a bit for it. 💛 Thanks for supporting Scroop Patterns and NOT being a bot! #scrooppatterns #francesrump #18thcenturysewingpatterns

TBT to the gorgeous snuggly Sophia Mantle @Katestangledstring made as a pattern tester. Her outer is a fine worsted wool, interlined with a midweight woollen wool (the Sophia Mantle pattern includes instructions on an optional interlining, for maximum coziness). ⭐️It’s the final day of the Nina Blouse launch sale!⭐️ Let’s take a deep dive into the View B Nina blouse and the historical garments that inspired it. While I adore the all-lace look of the extant blouse the Nina pattern is based on, I also wanted the pattern to be as adaptable as possible, which meant it needed an option to make it in fabric. Thus, View B. Giving instructions for both an all-lace blouse and an all-fabric blouse meant the instructions are almost twice as long, because fabric and lace use different construction techniques. I definitely cursed myself and my tendency to want to provide all the options possible in a pattern on more than one occasion as I developed this pattern. But in the end I think it’s worth it. The variety of techniques given in the instructions means the decoration and fabric options for the Nina are practically limitless. And including a second long sleeve view and a collarless neckline means the Nina can be used for years before the slim 3/4 sleeve of the original came into vogue, and after the tall Edwardian collar fell out of vogue. I looked at a wide variety of extant garments and period designs for View B. Check out slides 5 and onwards to see them. Let’s look at View A of the Nina Blouse, and the historical inspiration behind it. 🌸 View A is taken directly from an original ca. 1910 blouse in my personal collection (Slide 2). I thought this blouse would be the perfect basis for a pattern the instant I saw it. It’s full of classic Edwardian details: lace insertion, tucks, applique lacework. It’s a fairly rare surviving example of an all lace blouse, but the base lines were also totally adaptable to an all fabric blouse, or to lace inset into fabric. Both the extant blouse and View A have a line of lace inset down the center front, slightly gathered 3/4 length cuffed sleeves, a lace yoke with no shoulder seam, lace cuffs, and a high boned lace collar. The pattern comes with extensive additional historical notes with examples of similar blouses and inspiration for other ways to decorate it. Some of my favourites are shown in the last 4 slides. ⭐️The celebrate the launch, the Nina Blouse is on sale! FINALLY!!! I started my own outfit close to 10 years ago with my DAR Chapter's first Textile and Tea meet-ups. Slowly picking away at each piece over the years. All layers made from scratch from chemise to gown. I did not do the tambour embroidery on my apron or lace making! Took years to find the right fabrics (quilted petticoat not HA but $3 a yard back in the 2000's or 2010's I won't turn it down)! Mostly machine sewing on inside parts and more hand sewing as I progressed. Still some hand finishing left but wanted to get photos with my rhododendron in bloom! Stays: Redthreaded older version of the 1750's with synthetic whale bone from Burnley & Trowbridge. Fabric from Sewfisticated (linen) and Salvation Army (silk/linen blend from a pair of men's pants I took apart). Chemise: Handkerchief linen from The Fabric Place Basement. Instructions from "Everyday Dress of Rural America 1783-1800" by Meridth Wright with additional reinforced shoulders instructions from Sharon Ann Burnston's website. Well 2021 wasn't a great year in general, but it was a great year for sewing for me. (I stress sew…) I've just done a round-up of all my costume makes from 2021. 28 items! And I've probably missed some. Here are some of the highlights. Follow the linkin link in my bio to read the whole post about all my makes. Image 1: A jaunty 1910s ensemble featuring a #selinablouse Image 2: A new 18th c cap, as well as ruffled trim for my #amaliajacket Image 3: a 1900s Wrapper Image 4: A @virgilsfinegoods #norlandfrock for a four year old Image 5: An 18th c red cloak, and an extremely exuberant Amalia Image 6: A 1910s Selina Blouse and #kilbirnieskirt What I like looking at all of these is that while I was prolific, I was also frugal and environmentally friendly. Quite a few of these items were made from re-fashioned items. The vast majority of the remainder were made from stash fabric (often originally thrifted) rather than new. And all of them were carefully and thoughtfully made, and will get lots of use. It’s a very good feeling. #historicalcostuming #historicalsewing #scrooppatterns #thedreamstress #historicalsewmonthly #historicalsewmonthly2021

Let’s talk about the sizing for the Persis Corset. The Persis is available in sizes 30-52. That covers bust 30’’/76.5cm to 55’’/139.5cm, with three different cup options, and hips 32’’/81 to 56’’/142cm, with two different hip fits. Two hip sizes means it’s easier to get the fit perfect no matter what the difference between your waist and hip: quite straight, or very curvy. The bust cup sizing is fully graded, so it’s totally proportional to the size of the corset, and to amount of moveable flesh you have. Getting those fabulous curves in corsets is all about how easy it is to move squish around: it’s not about squeezing you in, it’s about rearranging! The cup sizes take this into account, and you can see how perfectly they fit on the models: no dent lines and muffin tops, and no gaping. The boning layouts are also customised for different size ranges, so that every size gets the appropriate amount of support and shaping from the boning. The first image is an illustration of how the boning layouts change in different size ranges Unfortunately I’m not currently able to expand the Scroop Pattern size range for complicated patterns like the Persis. Size Pack C is by far my worst selling size pack for every pattern. In fact, in most patterns I don’t even sell enough of Size Pack C to cover the cost of developing the sizes above Size 46 (the top size in Size Pack B). I use the sales of smaller sizes to subsidise the work and development that goes into sizes 48-52, because I think it’s important for historical sewing patterns to be as inclusive as possible. With no evidence for a significant amount of demand for the largest sizes I already produce, I literally can’t afford to add more sizes. I do include an extended range (up to size 56) in patterns like the Fantail Skirt, that are cheaper to grade. If you want to see additional sizes in patterns like the Persis the best way to encourage that is to buy Size Pack C, even if you have to grade it a little to make it fit you. #persiscorset #scrooppatterns #patternsizing #sewinclusive #corsetpattern #edwardiansewingpattern #edwardiancorset #historicalcorsetpattern #1900scorset

Today sucks and I've got zero energy or brain for stuff, so here's when I did and could get some test pictures of a gown that only took me two years to finish (sorry, @scrooppatterns ). I'd originally been a pattern tester for the Angelica gown, then work and ADHD and having to go off Adderall all piled up and I had a mostly-finished bodice and pile of skirt fabric sitting around. This year has been multiple levels of shitty, but I've finally nearly finished working through a few unfinished projects, and I've got myself a lovely, swooshy silk gown. (Also I didn't mean to have the flower border here, but propping my phone on a trellis for pictures got them in frame and hey I'm ok with this) #sewing #cosplay #historicalsewing #angelicagown #scrooppatterns #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #handsewing #18thcenturysewing #fabricguru

Day 3 Last: this was my last project! a modified @scrooppatterns #augustastays done up in poly velvet. it’s all machine sewn except for the binding! on one of the slides you can see the permanent bodkin i made. it functions somewhere in between an aglet and bodkin and i really love how it came out! the aglets i got from burnley and trowbridge where too big for my grommets so this worked out nicely! i really like how this came out! it’s pretty comfortable to wear i just wish i had more pants to go with it since i hate wearing dresses. but that means More Pants Making!! pattern: @scrooppatterns fabric: old stash (i think it was given to me) aglets and ribbon: @burnleyandtrowbridge bodkin: me Shirt: my own tutorial (check out my youtube) . . . . #sewing #historicalsewing #costume #yeoldefashionvlogger #fiberartist #historicalartist #linenenthusist #handsewing #historicalcostume #handmade #slowfashion #historybounding #costuming #fiberart #historicalfashion #scroopaugustastays #scrooppatterns #burnleyandtrowbridge #historybounding #fallforcostume #fallforcostume2021 #redthreaded @redthreaded

Never thought the 1930s would be my thing, but since I have just finished a blouse and skirt and bought a pair of shoes I decided to Chanel my inner Greta. All pieces are for everyday wear with modern styling, but when you pit them together and style the hair they are definitely 1930s. #ngaio #scrooppatterns #wearinghistorypatterns #memeryshoes #1930sfashion #1930s

It's been chilly this week, so I whipped up a merino singlet last night using some lovely light merino to keep me warm. I have also cut a second singlet and two dress slips that I will finish up tonight. But finishing this one ticks off the second of my make nine patterns for the year - merino base layers 😁. It’s blustery and cold today, and I had one of those evenings where I just wanted to eat something warm and gooey and baked and curl up with a comfort book - looking at these photos of Nelleke of @wearwhatyousew in her Tara basically has the same effect.💛 I’m right aren’t I? This outfit is pretty much the definition of cozy sophistication. It’s the clothes equivalent of very nice loose-leaf tea in an elegant teapot. 🫖 With your favourite biscuits on the side! 🍪 The pointed pockets of View A work perfectly with the small check of the wool blend she used, and I love how they echo the sunrays on her jumper. The fabric is also excellent for showing off the slight extra fullness the elastic back waist gives the skirt. Nelleke’s overall feedback was “It's a verrrrry nice addition to the Scroop patterns library!” 🥰 She made View A in Size 46 and made no alterations at all to the pattern. Thank you for your helpful feedback and the delightful inspiration for my own wardrobe! #scrooptara #historybounding #edwardianhistorybounding #pinaforesewingpattern #pinaforepattern #vintageinspiredsewing #jumperdress #sewingwithcorduroy #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #patternlaunch #bestpatterntestersever #yesithaspockets #bigpocketftw #sewingpatternswithpockets #skirtpatternswithpockets #autumnsewing #skirtpatternswithelasticwaists #slowfashion #sewyourownlowfashion

When I created the Tara pattern I thought how fantastic it would look in plaid - particularly the pinafore version. Sam of @woolandthyme is here to prove that is absolutely the case! 💛💛💛 I love her styling with dark tights and boots and a black turtleneck + a camera and fabulous hat. Classic autumn chic with a touch of whimsy 🍁🍂 Did I mention a touch of whimsy? Check out her pockets! Bat pockets! 🦇 🦇🦇 Yesssssss. Her fabric is a vintage wool suiting. Sam made View A with the View B pockets and skirt length in Size 50. She’s 5’1”. Her thoughts on the pattern: “I really enjoyed this! I have been looking for a pinafore pattern to use with this fabric and the cool pockets really sold me on this one!” Based on Sam’s & the other testers helpful feedback the final Tara pattern has a shorter and narrower pinafore front than is shown in these photos. Thank you Sam for your excellent, extremely helpful feedback! Both the Seatoun & Tara are 15% off for three more days only! 🍁 Treat yourself to the digital pattern at ScroopPatterns.com, or pre-order the paper pattern at VirgilsFineGoods.com 🍁 #scrooptara #historybounding #edwardianhistorybounding #pinaforesewingpattern #pinaforepattern #vintageinspiredsewing #jumperdress #sewingwithcorduroy #scrooppatterns #newsewingpattern #patternlaunch #bestpatterntestersever #yesithaspockets #bigpocketftw #sewingpatternswithpockets #skirtpatternswithpockets #autumnsewing #skirtpatternswithelasticwaists #slowfashion #sizeinclusivesewing #sewyourownlowfashion

Doing a little weekend mending. My very first Otari Hoodie developed holes in the elbows, so I’ve applied patches of the original fabric and wrestled the sleeves around under the machine to stitch them on. Tricky, but so satisfying to keep a well made garment going for another few years as my gardening and tramping hoodie! For me making is not just about the creation process, but about respecting what goes into my makes: good materials, and my own valuable time. #mending #scrooppatterns #otarihoodie #wastenotwantnot #zerowastewardrobe #slowfashion

Sunflower dress is done! I love it! It is very comfy and pretty, and so light and breezy for summer. Of course the day I go to photograph it is the first not sunny day in ages. This pattern is great too, everything came together perfectly and the different bust sizes are fantastic. The only modification I made was lowering the neckline about two inches For my matching mask I tried the #ddfacemask pattern and I really like it. It fits really well and is comfortable in warmer weather Pattern: Robin dress by Scroop Patterns Fabric: cotton lawn from AmoThreads Coconut shell buttons from ebay #sewsialist #sewstagram #curvysewing #plussizesewing #scrooppatterns #scrooprobin
