T H E M A X I S K I R T I’ve been itching to make a straight maxi skirt for a classic winter look, which is how I found The Maxi Skirt by @themakersatelier It was a really straightforward sew, with excellent instructions and diagrams. It was my first time sewing a curved front fly zip, so I was really careful to follow the instructions word for word, and it worked! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 My sizing put me at size 12 for the waist, graded to between 12-14 at the hips. I feel like the waistband is *slightly* too big, but the skirt body itself is perfect. I made a denim skirt last year and wear it a lot. However I decided I’d like one without a front split to make it more practical and the @themakersatelier #tmamaxiskirt fits the bill. It’s a great pattern and went together perfectly. It was a pretty quick make and would have been even quicker without the topstitching but I’m pleased I decided to do that. This was made partly on my kitchen table and partly at the @madeandmaking studio with Julia @houseofmisssew there for advice and guidance. I made a 10 grading to an 8 based on my measurements but actually the waist is a bit big so next time I’ll make a straight 8. The fabric has been in my stash for a while and was from @fabricsgalorelondon. I finished it off with a leather label from @little.rosy.cheeks on the pocket. I would love to make a cream denim one at some point. I have worn this skirt already as it goes with a lot of things in my wardrobe. I'm just back from a lovely weekend where I got to hand-deliver this make. This was another promised birthday make. @bobblin_through_life asked me to make her a smart/casual fly front midi skirt which would actually fit her and I think this fulfills the brief! The colour combo on this one was a bit out of my usual comfort zone (orange topstitching!), but it came out so well. I really enjoyed the process of topstitching. This is the first time I've used proper topstitch thread and it's given such a great finish. I also added Specky Seamstress crochet bias binding to the hem for an extra special touch. The pattern worked well, but the instructions were a little poor, including the fly switching sides from one illustration to another, and the button step missing completely. It helped that I generally knew what I was doing sewing a fly front, otherwise I think I would have struggled. Also, I had to make up the topstitching as this detail wasn't included in the instructions despite being in one of the samples. Do I, don’t I 🤔 ?? I bought this lilac coloured denim to make another pair of lilac Dawn Jeans (flick across to see my original pair - which I love & thrash). We started 2024 moving house and ended it with a new grandchild so it’s been a busy 12 months. I realised that I hadn't posted any of my makes for a while, so here we go! I made my #mmsanda from @merchantandmills which has been worn a lot and it certainly is nice and cosy. I didn't fancy making buttonholes, so I used some large poppers instead. It's lined with some of my treasured Indian cotton. I'm also wearing my new favourite skirt - #tmamaxiskirt in black denim, which is very similar to a skirt I had and loved many years ago from Per Una. It's a lovely pattern, the front pockets particularly sit very well. Also wearing one of my Sophie scarves (pattern by @petiteknit ). Ready for a trip to Ikea!

Weekend project finished ✔️ On Saturday afternoon I decided to drop everything and sew. Sometmes it’s just got to be done right? Why? I had seen the beautiful new maxi skirt pattern from the @themakersatelier and had to make it there and then. I had some heavy black linen left over from making this top and new exactly what to do next. This is my type of ‘Co -ord’ ie not a flounce or a frill insight! (Apologies if you love flounces and frills! 😮) Linen sewn to look like denim. Twin needle top stitched to within an inch of its life. Will take pics of me wearing soon. It’s my birthday outfit. I’m 60 this week. 🎉 DETAILS I sized up and I’m so glad I did. My waist fell between two sizes. Icm seams. Easily made from 2m of linen. I did not add patch pockets to the back. I’m 5ft 6” but added an inch to the length for a true maxi look. It worked out perfectly. @themakersatelier your fly zip instructions are fantastic. The new favorite in my wardrobe is The Maker Atelier Maxi Skirt. I’ve styled it 3 different ways which bodes well for how often it will get worn. I added belt loops and extra topstitching to better mimic a denim skirt. I bought the 100% denim at Hobby Lobby (for those in the US) at a great price. The striped knit top is my own pattern and the black shirt is the Kaia from @vikisews.patterns which I will show in more detail in another post. I am posting this make almost a year after it was finished, but I wanted to do justice for the Maxi@skirt pattern by @themakersatelier. I used a heavier denim which I got from a local craft store. I realised that I hadn't posted any of my makes for a while, so here we go! I made my #mmsanda from @merchantandmills which has been worn a lot and it certainly is nice and cosy. I didn't fancy making buttonholes, so I used some large poppers instead. It's lined with some of my treasured Indian cotton. I'm also wearing my new favourite skirt - #tmamaxiskirt in black denim, which is very similar to a skirt I had and loved many years ago from Per Una. It's a lovely pattern, the front pockets particularly sit very well. Also wearing one of my Sophie scarves (pattern by @petiteknit ). Ready for a trip to Ikea!
