Close ups of my first Day Dress by The Avid Seamstress sewn in ponte. As I didn’t need to insert the invisible zip in this dress making it was a quick sew. I’m happy this lovely length of ponte from @simplyfabrics is unleashed from my stash too. If there’s an invisible zip involved it can put many months between me and a make getting started sometimes. I made my normal size -a 3 - but took it in a little extra down the side seams at the waist. I didn’t toile first and was lucky that the darts and shoulder fit are fine. The waistline is a tad higher than my natural waist but that’s arguably more flattering at my age anyway and I’m all for that ;) As I wanted a midi version I added 5.5” to the skirt length, but will add more next time as I had to do a bound hem to preserve skirt length on this one. Next time I want a lovely, deep, turned hem. I didn’t follow the construction order in the instructions but sewed up the bodice and skirt separately, joining them at the waist. After finishing my Christmas sewing with a couple of days to spare I managed to sew this beauty up ready for Christmas Day yesterday! The pattern is a tried and tested one for me and one of my favourite woven dress patterns- The Day Dress by @theavidseamstress I have made three of these now but I think this is my favourite. I made it in this lovely linen from @wattleandslate - it’s a linen viscose mix which gives it a bit of drape whilst still being lovely to sew with. I lengthened the skirt by a couple of inches. New mash up favourite. This is my old faithful bodice - @theavidseamstress day dress with the skirt pieces of the @tillybuttons Lyra dress. This is more of a maxi than a midi because the day dress bodice hits me a few inches lower. It’s so comfortable to wear and makes me feel the perfect mix of casual but still together. It’s made here in some really fun @ladymcelroyfabrics viscose with bunnies. From a distance it looks like flowers but up close you see that they’re bunnies (photo 4). I made this to match Liam’s Peter rabbit Easter dungarees (photo 3). It took just over 2 mtrs. Photo 2 shows the lovely movement of the fabric. Finished this Day Dress from @theavidseamstress in a gorgeous cotton/rayon from @wearethefabricstore. I love this pattern, it’s definitely my style. I learned so much making this dress. For once I actually made a muslin before starting as I did my first ever FBA. I also successfully eased in sleeves, taking my time and getting it right rather than giving up and just accepting pinched fabric. Plus I finally managed to make my invisible zip actually invisible! So proud of this make and can’t wait to wear it. I would probably line the bodice next time if I’m going to use a lightweight fabric again. I’ve been working on quite a few workwear pieces as I’m starting my first proper job in September! I’ve been a student for 8 years now so haven’t had to wear anything that smart in a while! The Day Dress is one of my tried and tested patterns. I love the fit and it is exactly my style of dress. Now I’ve made a few I thought I’d start playing around with the sleeves and length to give slightly different looks. For this dress I used the slash and spread method to change the normal short sleeves into flutter sleeves and love how they have turned out. As it’s quite curved I did a rolled hem on the sleeve and I’m really pleased with how it turned out, especially as I don’t have a rolled hem foot! I also lengthened the skirt by 15cm. I’m really happy with this as the fabric is quite light so it’s the perfect length to wear with bare legs in summer as well as with tights and boots in winter. Finally I used bias binding to finish the neckline instead of the facing as I just find that facings sometimes get in the way and flip out a little. Day 20 of #memademay2021 Oh #theavidseamstressdaydress is such a delight to sew and wear. It features pockets and has an elasticated waist band. Had quite a few compliments on this one. The fabric was from #soi and washes well. I do have some left and our son has requested a matching shirt for him. Might try and get that done and I am sure it would be crackers!

Happy Halloween everyone! 🎃🎃 Finished my latest autumnal make last night and I’m so happy with how it turned out! 🍂🍁 This is the @theavidseamstress Day Dress in a super soft russet @robertkaufman herringbone cotton flannel from @guthrieghani I made a size 4.5 and added two inches to the bodice length and two inches to the hem as I like my knees covered. The waistline is a fraction too low so would only add 1.5 inches next time. The shaping of the bodice darts is really beautiful and the gathers on the skirt are really even as it uses an elastic method for gathering rather than two rows of gathering stitches. I’ve not done that before so it was nice to learn a new method. I didn’t really follow the instructions to be honest as it seemed a really odd way round of doing things so I just went with what I know (construct bodice, construct skirt, join together, add zip, add facing, hem). It’s an easy and very well drafted pattern. I had a streak of fails before I made this (if you think all my makes turn out successfully, you’d be very mistaken! 😅) and this was just the confidence boost I needed! . I know it’s already October but I swear I did plan my #makenine2019 this spring. Because I’m bad at following the rules, my #makenine looks more like Make Nine meets #summerofbasics, but I’m also easily bored, so it turned into Make Nine Plus 1-6 Additional Garments. #maketentosixteen?⁣ ⁣ My plan for the original nine was to fill some holes in my closet (summer work shirts!) and really practice #shirtmaking techniques by making three garments three times each. I’m done with these! I made the Day Dress in this beautiful polka dot cotton poplin which was gifted to me as a Minerva Brand Ambassador in exchange for a post on the Minerva website (link in bio). I brought the Day Dress pattern back in December 2021 and it's only taken me 1.5 years to actually sew it up. I explain why in my Minerva post 😅 The style of this dress is right up my street. It's a style I could wear to work (as it looks quite smart), but I could equally pair it up with my converse shoes and make it a little more relaxed. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot sewing this pattern - new techniques and perspective. I’ve shared a lot more on this in my Minerva post. The dress comes in 3 views. I made view A of the dress in a size 2 at the bust and graded to a size 4 at the waist & hips. I increased the length of the skirt pieces by 2.5 inches. The fit is great for me. 2017 is coming to an end so it's time to reflect. I learnt to sew at the end of March at @sewoveritlondon & fell head over heels in love with it. I’ve been working on quite a few workwear pieces as I’m starting my first proper job in September! I’ve been a student for 8 years now so haven’t had to wear anything that smart in a while! The Day Dress is one of my tried and tested patterns. I love the fit and it is exactly my style of dress. Now I’ve made a few I thought I’d start playing around with the sleeves and length to give slightly different looks. For this dress I used the slash and spread method to change the normal short sleeves into flutter sleeves and love how they have turned out. As it’s quite curved I did a rolled hem on the sleeve and I’m really pleased with how it turned out, especially as I don’t have a rolled hem foot! I also lengthened the skirt by 15cm. I’m really happy with this as the fabric is quite light so it’s the perfect length to wear with bare legs in summer as well as with tights and boots in winter. Finally I used bias binding to finish the neckline instead of the facing as I just find that facings sometimes get in the way and flip out a little. Probably my last summery make for this year, this is #thedaydress by @theavidseamstress I was really making an effort improving the fit of the bodice, with a SBA and also changing the sleeves so the whole dress wouldn’t slide up too much when lifting my arms and it truly worked out well. The bodice was actually supposed to be a toile, but then I realized it looked cute and might work together with this small cut of cotton/linen blend I had no idea what to do with. The colors don’t match perfectly and this is the third item I made with this fabric, but I like it. I also lowered the back neckline (bit gapey now but who cares) and added pockets

Here is my #2017bestnine. 2017 was the year I learnt to sew and fell head over heels in love with it. Sew Me Sunshine was founded & I am loving working on it every day. I’ve not gone back to work yet (hurrah for working in education) so in my mind this isn’t late! #2018makenine, let’s see how we did.. Although I didn’t make everything on the list, I think I did reasonably well as I made several off-list items last year, which was really my first serious year of sewing. 1️⃣#soivintageshirtdress - really liked the idea of making a shirt dress but just didn’t get round to it. Carrying this one over. 2️⃣#theavidseamstressdaydress - made one in lobster fabric and one is practically finished in an octopus fabric. Great dress to make though I will always add a bit of length to the bodice for future ones as it’s a bit short over the bigger bust. 3️⃣#papercutwaverjacket - I just didn’t find the right fabric for this one so I’m carrying it over for next winter. 4️⃣#beatrixtop - I cut 2 out of bolt ends I got on sale and the first one was HUGE so it needs adjusting before I finish the other one in the lovely blue cow fabric. 5️⃣#christinehaynesemerydress - Still need to work on the perfectly fitted bodice, but it’s my fave go to dress! I made a girly pink one with a collar, a flamingo one which I almost forgot about(!) and a festive dachshund one for christmas with pom pom trim 😄 6️⃣#sewaholichollyburn - I really like this skirt and will def be making more. Last year I made a smart one for work using some Japanese fabric and one that formed the base of a space outfit which I’ve posted pics of previously (I will work on the taking pictures thing this year, promise!). 7️⃣#soidorisdress - I made this during some evening classes @sew_retro but it lost its sparkle very quickly due to fit errors and I soon put it to one side. Just got to sew on the buttons and it’s good to go. Maybe I’ll change my mind once the weather’s warmed up. 8️⃣#coletteviolet - I didn’t make a toile, I used amazing mermaid fabric, it doesn’t fit very well. Oops! Must have another tinker with it to get it more wearable. Must make toiles.. Must make toiles.. 🤦‍♀️ 9️⃣#colettezinnia - made a wearable toile out of some navy canvas which was a bit too thick looking back. It’s a really lovely skirt though and I’m keen to make more.

A new addition to my wardrobe is this Avid Seamstress day dress in this lovely Ruby Star cotton. Started and finished this in 2023. I made View A of the dress in a size 2 at the bust and I graded it to a size 4 at the waist/hips. I increased the length of the skirt by 2.5 inches to make it knee length. I've had this Ruby star cotton in my stash for a little while now. I really like the design by @missmelodymiller such that I brought this same design in two colourways. Close ups of my first Day Dress by The Avid Seamstress sewn in ponte. As I didn’t need to insert the invisible zip in this dress making it was a quick sew. I’m happy this lovely length of ponte from @simplyfabrics is unleashed from my stash too. If there’s an invisible zip involved it can put many months between me and a make getting started sometimes. I made my normal size -a 3 - but took it in a little extra down the side seams at the waist. I didn’t toile first and was lucky that the darts and shoulder fit are fine. The waistline is a tad higher than my natural waist but that’s arguably more flattering at my age anyway and I’m all for that ;) As I wanted a midi version I added 5.5” to the skirt length, but will add more next time as I had to do a bound hem to preserve skirt length on this one. Next time I want a lovely, deep, turned hem. I didn’t follow the construction order in the instructions but sewed up the bodice and skirt separately, joining them at the waist. Sharing with you my first Day Dress, which is a pattern by the Avid Seamstress. I made the Day Dress in this beautiful polka dot cotton poplin which was gifted to me as a Minerva Brand Ambassador in exchange for a post on the Minerva website (link in bio). I brought the Day Dress pattern back in December 2021 and it's only taken me 1.5 years to actually sew it up. I explain why in my Minerva post 😅 The style of this dress is right up my street. It's a style I could wear to work (as it looks quite smart), but I could equally pair it up with my converse shoes and make it a little more relaxed. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot sewing this pattern - new techniques and perspective. I’ve shared a lot more on this in my Minerva post. The dress comes in 3 views. I made view A of the dress in a size 2 at the bust and graded to a size 4 at the waist & hips. I increased the length of the skirt pieces by 2.5 inches. The fit is great for me. An oldie but goodie! This is the @theavidseamstress daydress in a cute viscose fabric from @stoffstil. . I would really recommend this pattern for beginners or as a pallet cleanser/confidence boost. It’s an easy and very well drafted pattern. I had a streak of fails before I made this (if you think all my makes turn out successfully, you’d be very mistaken! 😅) and this was just the confidence boost I needed! . Sewing Fails… Not the two photos shown to the side - they’re two great sewing wins that I have worn time and again - posted to remind me that when you get it right it’s amazing! They’re the @deer_and_doe_patterns #ddmyosotisdress and a mash up of the @theavidseamstress Day Dress and the @tillybuttons Lyra skirt. Swipe for the fail! I saw the Pippa Dress on Sezane - my favourite RTW website to stalk and thought “I can definitely make that” and I didn’t stop to think if I *should* make it. The Estelle Dress by @sewoveritlondon was a perfect pattern to recreate it. And this jersey from @minervadotcom was a lovely neutral colour and good weight. I’ve made so many Sew Over It patterns that I foolishly didn’t check the measurements and made my usual size - a 12. If I had checked the measurements I might have noticed the 3 inches of negative ease. I was so worried about my tummy in this dress that I forgot about my hips and bum. And it is far too small. I would honestly need to grade out about 2 or 3 sizes. It’s unwearable as is. Which is such a pity because I love the top half. I try to think that no sewing is a waste. The way the neckband is finished in this is something I haven’t seen before un jersey in that it’s all turned in. The avid seemstress day dress pattern is definitely one of my favourite patterns. It wasn't too hard, and the pattern instructions were really good. I used some fabric that I've had for a while, it's a stretch jersey fabric with a bit of structure to it. Another thing I loved about this dress was that it has pockets, yippee, it's also really comfy. Excited to take part in #wearitonwednesday week 2 as it prompted some useful reflections! I had to go hunting for something me made I hadn’t worn in 2022 (which I think is a good thing?!) but I knew exactly what I’d find that would be suitable. This #avidseamstressdaydress was one of my earliest makes back in 2019. It was my project on a beginner’s sewing course, so time and effort went into it, but I wasn’t ever happy with it and I’m not sure I’ve ever properly worn it since, let alone in 2022. It’s a combination of factors rather than any one thing I don’t like, including bad fit, not liking the fabric colour on me, and just not being sure that the pattern is for me. Anyway, digging it out this Wednesday has convinced me it’s not going back in the wardrobe in case I wear it one day - cos I won’t. I’ve got pictures and notes to remind me of this early foray into dressmaking, and that’s fine. Now I will most likely take it apart and reuse the fabric for pocket linings or some such. It’s Ruby Star and I love it - just not that close to my face 🤣 PS, I know the house socks and saving taking the photos til the end of the day does me absolutely no favours here. What can I say? Ad - pr fabric Going down to Dublin on Sunday to see Garth Brooks in concert I wore my new mashup. It’s the @theavidseamstressmakers day dress bodice (my perfect bodice pattern) with the sleeves from @sewoveritlondon Heidi dress and the skirt from the @tillybuttons Lyra dress. I am loving midi/maxi dresses these days and this is the perfect combination to get it. I made the size 10 in the day dress and that’s the only “fitted” part. It took 3mtrs of this fab @minervadotcom exclusive fabric. I had to unpick the zip and it pulled a bit there so I’d advise being gentle with the fabric. I love this fabric so much because of the ambiguity- is it a floral or a leopard print? Is it brown or dark purple? Who knows!! I was lucky to win a competition on the @theavidseamstress Instagram page which gave me a lovely kit to make the #avidseamstressdaydress The kit included a paper copy of the pattern, all the notions required including thread and interfacing, along with this lovely polka dot viscose fabric. I made a size 4, and made a few adjustments to the bodice which are standard to me, lengthened by 3/4", lowered the bust dart by 5/8" and made a high round back adjustment. The pattern instructions were easy to follow, but a different order from the usual construction order I'd follow for a dress like this, and the end result is its easy to take it in a bit at the waist in the future rather than deconstructing the whole thing! The pattern had you insert elastic at the waist but I skipped this part and gathered the fabric, as I don't like elastic sitting at my natural waist. Its the perfect day dress and it's withstood a Toby Cavery lunch 😂 I actually already had the pattern when I won the kit! So I thought I'd run a little competition to give away the extra copy of the pattern that I now have. This Day Dress is the first of 3 finishes I had over the mid term break and last couple of evenings. I toiled this pattern back in the summer and made some adjustments but by the time I came to make it I’d lost a few pounds and I had to make a number more adjustments to get the fit right including unpicking the side seams to redo the side darts 🙈 But I think it was worth the effort! Especially as it has pockets! It’s my first times putting in an invisible zip and that bit went perfectly thanks to a great tutorial on the Avid Seamstress website accompanying the pattern. (Yay!) I’m not quite as afraid of them any more, and my Janome invisible zip foot is really effective and easy to use for this too which helps. I made this in a gorgeous triple crepe fabric in a colour is a purple/grey depending on the light. It’s been in my stash since the last K&S show in Dublin in 2019 (sob, those were the days!). I’ve never used triple crepe before and it’s so just gorgeous with a lovely weight for a winter dress. Sewing Fails… Not the two photos shown to the side - they’re two great sewing wins that I have worn time and again - posted to remind me that when you get it right it’s amazing! They’re the @deer_and_doe_patterns #ddmyosotisdress and a mash up of the @theavidseamstress Day Dress and the @tillybuttons Lyra skirt. Swipe for the fail! I saw the Pippa Dress on Sezane - my favourite RTW website to stalk and thought “I can definitely make that” and I didn’t stop to think if I *should* make it. The Estelle Dress by @sewoveritlondon was a perfect pattern to recreate it. And this jersey from @minervadotcom was a lovely neutral colour and good weight. I’ve made so many Sew Over It patterns that I foolishly didn’t check the measurements and made my usual size - a 12. If I had checked the measurements I might have noticed the 3 inches of negative ease. I was so worried about my tummy in this dress that I forgot about my hips and bum. And it is far too small. I would honestly need to grade out about 2 or 3 sizes. It’s unwearable as is. Which is such a pity because I love the top half. I try to think that no sewing is a waste. The way the neckband is finished in this is something I haven’t seen before un jersey in that it’s all turned in. Happy birthday dress to me. Check out those #pintucks! Get a load of that double collar! This is a hacked and SIGNIFICANTLY sized down version of #bhlmarie. I made one before in the “correct” size but it made me look like Henry VIII. Srsly. So this is 4 sizes down and I have chopped it off at the waist and added the skirt from the #avidseamstressdaydress. Which, by the way, has a really nifty trick for using elastic to gather the skirt. Excited to take part in #wearitonwednesday week 2 as it prompted some useful reflections! I had to go hunting for something me made I hadn’t worn in 2022 (which I think is a good thing?!) but I knew exactly what I’d find that would be suitable. This #avidseamstressdaydress was one of my earliest makes back in 2019. It was my project on a beginner’s sewing course, so time and effort went into it, but I wasn’t ever happy with it and I’m not sure I’ve ever properly worn it since, let alone in 2022. It’s a combination of factors rather than any one thing I don’t like, including bad fit, not liking the fabric colour on me, and just not being sure that the pattern is for me. Anyway, digging it out this Wednesday has convinced me it’s not going back in the wardrobe in case I wear it one day - cos I won’t. I’ve got pictures and notes to remind me of this early foray into dressmaking, and that’s fine. Now I will most likely take it apart and reuse the fabric for pocket linings or some such. It’s Ruby Star and I love it - just not that close to my face 🤣 PS, I know the house socks and saving taking the photos til the end of the day does me absolutely no favours here. What can I say? I found this incredible Carolina Herrera rayon faille #deadstockfabric @moodfabrics and originally thought I'd turn it into a pair of cigarette pants. However, after giving it some thought I realized I'd probably get more use from a fancy dress. I used the pattern for @theavidseamstress #daydress #avidseamstressdaydress which I have made 4-5 times and feel is very flattering and comfortable without any adjustments. Lo and behold: I made up the bodice, tried it on and IT WAS TOO TIGHT!!!! All my other Day Dresses were made from 100% cotton, this is a stiff rayon. I was freaking out both because the fabric was very expensive and also because I had gone to great pains and spent hours to really do a top quality job. Fortunately, letting out the waist darts was enough to get a good fit. I made no other adjustments. I finished the sleeves and hem with bias tape. I was lucky to win a competition on the @theavidseamstress Instagram page which gave me a lovely kit to make the #avidseamstressdaydress The kit included a paper copy of the pattern, all the notions required including thread and interfacing, along with this lovely polka dot viscose fabric. I made a size 4, and made a few adjustments to the bodice which are standard to me, lengthened by 3/4", lowered the bust dart by 5/8" and made a high round back adjustment. The pattern instructions were easy to follow, but a different order from the usual construction order I'd follow for a dress like this, and the end result is its easy to take it in a bit at the waist in the future rather than deconstructing the whole thing! The pattern had you insert elastic at the waist but I skipped this part and gathered the fabric, as I don't like elastic sitting at my natural waist. Its the perfect day dress and it's withstood a Toby Cavery lunch 😂 I actually already had the pattern when I won the kit! So I thought I'd run a little competition to give away the extra copy of the pattern that I now have. A new addition to my wardrobe is this Avid Seamstress day dress in this lovely Ruby Star cotton. Started and finished this in 2023. I made View A of the dress in a size 2 at the bust and I graded it to a size 4 at the waist/hips. I increased the length of the skirt by 2.5 inches to make it knee length. I've had this Ruby star cotton in my stash for a little while now. I really like the design by @missmelodymiller such that I brought this same design in two colourways. Sharing with you my first Day Dress, which is a pattern by the Avid Seamstress. I made the Day Dress in this beautiful polka dot cotton poplin which was gifted to me as a Minerva Brand Ambassador in exchange for a post on the Minerva website (link in bio). I brought the Day Dress pattern back in December 2021 and it's only taken me 1.5 years to actually sew it up. I explain why in my Minerva post 😅 The style of this dress is right up my street. It's a style I could wear to work (as it looks quite smart), but I could equally pair it up with my converse shoes and make it a little more relaxed. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot sewing this pattern - new techniques and perspective. I’ve shared a lot more on this in my Minerva post. The dress comes in 3 views. I made view A of the dress in a size 2 at the bust and graded to a size 4 at the waist & hips. I increased the length of the skirt pieces by 2.5 inches. The fit is great for me. An oldie but goodie! This is the @theavidseamstress daydress in a cute viscose fabric from @stoffstil. . I would really recommend this pattern for beginners or as a pallet cleanser/confidence boost. It’s an easy and very well drafted pattern. I had a streak of fails before I made this (if you think all my makes turn out successfully, you’d be very mistaken! 😅) and this was just the confidence boost I needed! . Happy Halloween everyone! 🎃🎃 Finished my latest autumnal make last night and I’m so happy with how it turned out! 🍂🍁 This is the @theavidseamstress Day Dress in a super soft russet @robertkaufman herringbone cotton flannel from @guthrieghani I made a size 4.5 and added two inches to the bodice length and two inches to the hem as I like my knees covered. The waistline is a fraction too low so would only add 1.5 inches next time. The shaping of the bodice darts is really beautiful and the gathers on the skirt are really even as it uses an elastic method for gathering rather than two rows of gathering stitches. I’ve not done that before so it was nice to learn a new method. I didn’t really follow the instructions to be honest as it seemed a really odd way round of doing things so I just went with what I know (construct bodice, construct skirt, join together, add zip, add facing, hem). The avid seemstress day dress pattern is definitely one of my favourite patterns. It wasn't too hard, and the pattern instructions were really good. I used some fabric that I've had for a while, it's a stretch jersey fabric with a bit of structure to it. Another thing I loved about this dress was that it has pockets, yippee, it's also really comfy. Ad - pr fabric Going down to Dublin on Sunday to see Garth Brooks in concert I wore my new mashup. It’s the @theavidseamstressmakers day dress bodice (my perfect bodice pattern) with the sleeves from @sewoveritlondon Heidi dress and the skirt from the @tillybuttons Lyra dress. I am loving midi/maxi dresses these days and this is the perfect combination to get it. I made the size 10 in the day dress and that’s the only “fitted” part. It took 3mtrs of this fab @minervadotcom exclusive fabric. I had to unpick the zip and it pulled a bit there so I’d advise being gentle with the fabric. I love this fabric so much because of the ambiguity- is it a floral or a leopard print? Is it brown or dark purple? Who knows!!
