Sometimes you just need a classic blouse and this is a fab one. It’s The Blouse pattern by @theavidseamstress. I sewed it up on the Creative Spirit Retreat, organised by owner Lisa Falconer and I came back feeling totally recharged and full of sewing enthusiasm. It was a really special experience and I can thoroughly recommend it. I love how blouses look tucked into trousers or jeans, so I can imagine there’ll be more of these in my future. I sewed a size 3 with upper and lower rounded back adjustments, a small full bust adjustment, widened the sleeve, extended the sleeve cap and the shoulder seam. Yes that was a bit faffy but totally worth the fiddling around. I cut 10cm off the length but it does have a tendency to come untucked so I’d add a few cm back onto my next version. I used cotton left over from lining my Heather Blazer (see photos for the matchy matchy look!). I fancy using a more drapey fabric like viscose for my next version to give a softer look to the collar. I'm certain there'll be more of these in my future wardrobe. The instructions are superb, plus it also helped to have Lisa’s expert advice in person. I love her attention to detail, and where she points out in the instructions where it’s important to be really precise. I used self-cover buttons as I didn’t have anything that looked quite right. It was a bit fiddly trying to get the dots in the centre but a bit of fabric glue and perseverance worked a treat. Lots more photos including my fitting journey and toiles are in my blog post. Not only has sewing happened, but my office / sewing space / guest room has finally been finished AND I took photos of my latest make. Brownie points all round! This is my latest make, The Blouse by @theavidseamstress . I have had this cut out for at least 18 months 🤦🏼‍♀️ which is completely unlike me and should tell you everything you need to know about the state of my mental health over the last year or so. Anyway. It’s in a gorgeous viscose twill which has more weight to it than I first thought, in a good way. I used some vintage buttons from @swagmansdaughter and sewed this up in a couple of hours, start to finish. Looking a little crumpled because I’ve worn it for work all day, paired with these #closetcoreginger black jeans. Den Flanell habe ich bei mir vor Ort bei @naehxt entdeckt und nach einmal streicheln konnte ich nicht ohne nach Hause gehen! 😇 Soo kuschelig. Auf dem letzten Bild seht ihr meine Inspiration, da wollte ich hin… Die Basis ist „The Blouse“ von @theavidseamstress , mein absoluter Lieblingsschnitt. Und die schöne Webkante hat mich auch nicht losgelassen, die musste auch mit rein. Lieben Dank an Jasmine @tihawabohu für den kleinen Kriegsrat zur Kräuselung! 🤍🖤 Die Rüschen sind 33 cm lang, die Stoffstreifen dazu waren je ca. 90 cm. Die Ärmel habe ich verlängert und so gedreht, dass auch hier die Webkante den Abschluss bildet. Von der linken Seite habe ich einen Stoffstreifen (Webband ginge auch) aufgenäht, damit sich ein Tunnel bildet und dann ein Gummi eingezogen. . #clobiasskirt #3! The final one in Linen, worn with ‘the blouse’ an #avidseamstressblouse . Deets: For the linen version I didn’t FS the side seams. The linen is a bit on the heavy side (220gsm) & I didn’t want the side seams to ‘dip’ so I used an overlocker. All skirts were cut in a size 10 as per my hip measurement. ‘The blouse’ was cut a 12 in a viscose. It’s a fitted style with high ‘European cut’ armholes. I found they cut a bit so I lowered them. Although I find the fitted style flattering I’ll probably ‘size up’ next time and put cuffs on the sleeves & add a tab so I can roll them up. So this is my final ‘Clo Bias skirt’ post. I’ve enjoyed playing with different fabrics, skirt lengths & top styles. A new blouse. I used the #avidseamstressblouse pattern with a gorgeous Mabelle Hall silk satin from #libertyoflondon that I picked up when I was in London for business back in March. This fabric feels wonderful on the skin, and I had enough left over to make another shirt (to be posted at a later date). The pattern was very straightforward - nothing complicated outside of the button holes. I've been on a super sewing run recently, but haven't been taking photographs of my makes. I vow to change that, starting now. This is an #avidseamstressblouse (which is one of my favourite patterns) in some @dashwoodstudio poplin i bought during a @minervadotcom poplin promotion in the summer. Seemed an appropriate fabric pattern for the weather in the UK this week (rain, rain, rain!) I've just counted up my @theavidseamstressmakers blouse collection. This is the 9th, with number 10 in my WIP pile waiting for buttons to be sewn on. Most are in poplin, as I love the firmness the fabric provides for the button placket and collar. I've lengthened the body by 7cm (I'm long in the body) and I generally don't bother with the elasticated sleeve cuff (I prefer the simple and crisp fold back finish). The simplicity of the blouse design and ease to make, is why I've made so many. The slowest part of the process is picking the buttons. Years ago, I bought a large craft bag, which at some stage I sorted into colour groups. For each shirt I sort through these looking for 7 or so buttons which are the same size, in colours that compliment the fabric pattern. On this occasion they are all varying shades of pastel blue. And finally, the finishing touch - the beautiful @kylieandthemachine labels. These are from last year's #katmadventcalendar . Every time I reach in my wardrobe for something to wear, they make me smile.

My first entry into this year’s #sewaprilblouse25 competition is this pattern by @theavidseamstress It’s The Blouse in a floral viscose from @1stforfabrics I actually bought this fabric as part of a voucher win from sewfrugal24 - it’s lovely to see it finally made up in the pattern I had in mind when I ordered it. Label - @little.rosy.cheeks - part of the same prize Fabric - viscose Buttons - £1 local charity recently Pattern - free with @simplysewingmag a while ago The pattern came together quite quickly. The only thing I’d change is to go up a size on the bust as it’s a pinch snugger than I’d like. I made a size 14 with no alterations. I really like it though, and would definitely make this blouse again. I also watched a tutorial by @sewing.bunny as the instructions seemed like they’d been shortened being part of a free version. July roundup! First off I finally finished another @theavidseamstress #avidseamstressblouse in sewing class with @simplylovetosew! This one has adjustments to the shoulders and sleevesand fits really well. The fabric is a cotton from @riflepaperco - a little too warm for the summer but will be nice come fall! This is my entry for the #SewAprilBlouse23 made from this gorgeous Liberty fabric using The Blouse pattern by the Avid Seamstress. I am really happy with how it turned out. I made no adjustments and found it was a relatively easy sew - mainly because the cotton fabric just did what it was told! I’ll definitely be making more of these! Sometimes you just need a classic blouse and this is a fab one. It’s The Blouse pattern by @theavidseamstress. I sewed it up on the Creative Spirit Retreat, organised by owner Lisa Falconer and I came back feeling totally recharged and full of sewing enthusiasm. It was a really special experience and I can thoroughly recommend it. I love how blouses look tucked into trousers or jeans, so I can imagine there’ll be more of these in my future. I sewed a size 3 with upper and lower rounded back adjustments, a small full bust adjustment, widened the sleeve, extended the sleeve cap and the shoulder seam. Yes that was a bit faffy but totally worth the fiddling around. I cut 10cm off the length but it does have a tendency to come untucked so I’d add a few cm back onto my next version. I used cotton left over from lining my Heather Blazer (see photos for the matchy matchy look!). I fancy using a more drapey fabric like viscose for my next version to give a softer look to the collar. I'm certain there'll be more of these in my future wardrobe. The instructions are superb, plus it also helped to have Lisa’s expert advice in person. I love her attention to detail, and where she points out in the instructions where it’s important to be really precise. I used self-cover buttons as I didn’t have anything that looked quite right. It was a bit fiddly trying to get the dots in the centre but a bit of fabric glue and perseverance worked a treat. Lots more photos including my fitting journey and toiles are in my blog post. I liked the wool The Blouse from The Avid Seamstress so much I decided to make another one while I had the pattern out. This one is made from a lightweight cotton with jacquard stripes that I got from Guthrie and Ghani last year. I spent ages choosing which side was the right side and went with the more textured side but the more I look at it the more I think I chose the wrong side ….anyway it’s a nice white blouse..Sleeves lengthened from the original pattern to wrist length according to my preference. Also I easily cut this from my 1.5m piece although the pattern says you need 2m

Here is my second version of The Avid Seamstress The Blouse. The green leopard one I made previously has been very useful and got a lot of wear so when @sewruthieroo persuaded me to buy this wool challis remnant from Pins and Needles at Farnham Thread festival I knew I was going to use it to make one of these. Luckily I can wear wool next to my skin with no discomfort and I think this, plain and neutral as it is will work with nearly all my existing cooler weather garments and outfits. As I said before the instructions for this pattern are outstanding resulting in a really neat finish.

I've been on a super sewing run recently, but haven't been taking photographs of my makes. I vow to change that, starting now. This is an #avidseamstressblouse (which is one of my favourite patterns) in some @dashwoodstudio poplin i bought during a @minervadotcom poplin promotion in the summer. Seemed an appropriate fabric pattern for the weather in the UK this week (rain, rain, rain!) I've just counted up my @theavidseamstressmakers blouse collection. This is the 9th, with number 10 in my WIP pile waiting for buttons to be sewn on. Most are in poplin, as I love the firmness the fabric provides for the button placket and collar. I've lengthened the body by 7cm (I'm long in the body) and I generally don't bother with the elasticated sleeve cuff (I prefer the simple and crisp fold back finish). The simplicity of the blouse design and ease to make, is why I've made so many. The slowest part of the process is picking the buttons. Years ago, I bought a large craft bag, which at some stage I sorted into colour groups. For each shirt I sort through these looking for 7 or so buttons which are the same size, in colours that compliment the fabric pattern. On this occasion they are all varying shades of pastel blue. And finally, the finishing touch - the beautiful @kylieandthemachine labels. These are from last year's #katmadventcalendar . Every time I reach in my wardrobe for something to wear, they make me smile.

Autumn is here and so are my @fibremood Peaches trousers! I was looking for a good wide leg trouser pattern and the Peaches seemed a good way to go. It's a pretty standard pattern except that I found the instructions for welt pockets completely baffling. In the end the @closetcorepatterns blog on welt pockets and @devon.threadtales amazing sew along video came to my rescue and I'm pretty happy with the results. Not perfect but pretty darn good! The fabric is a crepe I bought from @rach_stitched_up destash account. Rachel had suggested they would be good for trousers and she was absolutely spot on. Another self draft, in a bedsheet I got from the salvation army in Levin. I need to take this apart and put it back together, the bodice is just too long and I want to do the fabric justice. Made with #s9041 in another fabric gifted from a friend. I Love this dress, but I need a silkier slip to wear with it as the fabric is so light and catches on itself easily. Next is a @tammy.handmade #rheadress in a clearance duvet cover from the warehouse. I adore this dress, but I accidentally cut into it with my overlocker 😭 so I need to mend that. The shirt is #s9646 in a double cloth from @spotlightstores. I love love love this shirt, it's giving major pirate shirt vibes. Next is the #avidseamstressblouse in a rayon from, again, @spotlightstores. I cannot express enough how much I loved making this pattern, it was a lovely experience. Up next is two more daisy skirts, in a shorter length. Left is in a satin from @spotlightstores and the right is in a rayon from Pete's Emporium. Love these skirts, easy make. this is a blouse I had started making ages ago, but because my old sewing machine wasn’t very good at making buttonholes anymore, it got shelved… until I got a new sewing machine a few weeks ago! with a one-step buttonhole function! expect many more of these @theavidseamstress blouses. I will always keep my first sewing machine in my heart (and my home) because I got it second-hand from @caramellilac. I am also very happy though to finally have a computerised husqvarna jade 20 machine - a used model I got discounted at my local sewing machine store. July roundup! First off I finally finished another @theavidseamstress #avidseamstressblouse in sewing class with @simplylovetosew! This one has adjustments to the shoulders and sleevesand fits really well. The fabric is a cotton from @riflepaperco - a little too warm for the summer but will be nice come fall! I have a couple more planned, in cotton lawn and rayon.

#clobiasskirt #3! The final one in Linen, worn with ‘the blouse’ an #avidseamstressblouse . Deets: For the linen version I didn’t FS the side seams. The linen is a bit on the heavy side (220gsm) & I didn’t want the side seams to ‘dip’ so I used an overlocker. All skirts were cut in a size 10 as per my hip measurement. ‘The blouse’ was cut a 12 in a viscose. It’s a fitted style with high ‘European cut’ armholes. I found they cut a bit so I lowered them. Although I find the fitted style flattering I’ll probably ‘size up’ next time and put cuffs on the sleeves & add a tab so I can roll them up. So this is my final ‘Clo Bias skirt’ post. I’ve enjoyed playing with different fabrics, skirt lengths & top styles. Not only has sewing happened, but my office / sewing space / guest room has finally been finished AND I took photos of my latest make. Brownie points all round! This is my latest make, The Blouse by @theavidseamstress . I have had this cut out for at least 18 months 🤦🏼‍♀️ which is completely unlike me and should tell you everything you need to know about the state of my mental health over the last year or so. Anyway. It’s in a gorgeous viscose twill which has more weight to it than I first thought, in a good way. I used some vintage buttons from @swagmansdaughter and sewed this up in a couple of hours, start to finish. Looking a little crumpled because I’ve worn it for work all day, paired with these #closetcoreginger black jeans. 🌺🌺🌺#SewAprilBlouse23 – So, What is a Blouse?🌺🌺🌺 ‘What is the difference is between a shirt and a blouse’? 🤔 The shirt is generally identified by its more-or-less straight shape, front button opening, collar and/or collar stand, sleeves, and cuffs. In general the fabric is often a little crisp, or at least has some of that shirting ‘body’. 🤩Sewists we can often turn a shirt into a blouse 🤩. Some sticklers are ardent that blouses ‘do not button through the front’, but most of us perceive the blouse in more nuanced ways, such as: soft fabrication and drapability; generous wearing ease or conversely a more fitted silhouette; and the more regular incorporation of gathers, pleats, tucks, ruffles, shaped yokes, shirring, bows and ties. We would also suggest that blouses often venture into sleeve, cuff and collar play😍. The blouse could be seen as a rejection of the pure utilitarian ‘straight’ form, and an adventure into sensuous, softer fabrics, and embellishments and shapes which are more creative, expressive and fun. Sliding in with a #sewmashup challenge entry here for @secret_life_of_a_seamstress and @cath_craft I used a combination of the @deer_and_doe_patterns #myosotis dress bodice minus the darts to fit my broad back and also the @theavidseamstress #theblouse for the sleeve shape and cuffs. The fabric is a gorgeous cotton batiste from @heysewsister.co.uk which you can see at the cuff is fairly sheer. 💖The Avid Seamstress's 'The Blouse' is a classic design and a joy to make🥰. This blouse is beautiful, just as it is, but I decided to do a #patternhack and add a flounce in the hope of not needing a camisole with this semi-sheer fabric😛. I took the pattern piece from a #vintagesewingpattern in my stash (Women's Weekly BB49 - 👉swipe to check out this beauty). I trimmed the flounce edge along the shoulder, and to ensure the sides of the flouce 'met' after being overlapped at the button placket, I had to do some tweaking. I regret not slashing-and-spreading the pattern piece to get a touch more fullness, but it was such fun to experiment. Finally got round to putting the buttons onto my second @theavidseamstress blouse. The fabric is Scattered Seeds Pima Cotton Lawn from @guthrieghani that I bought back in May and the buttons are from @textilegarden . My first attempt at a shirt, this is #theavidseamstressblouse and the first time I’ve used one of their patterns, and I was really impressed, the instructions were fantastic and without making any adjustments it fits really well - it’s having its first outing at work today. One of my make nine goals for this year was to sew more blouses and shirts. Also @cloth_edit and @dahlia_sewciety are hosting #SewAprilBlouse which gave me the final nudge. I thought I’d start with The Blouse as @theavidseamstress’ instructions are so good and all of their patterns fit me really well. I made this as a wearable toile out of an IKEA duvet cover and I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out. I’m excited to make it in my ‘proper’ fabric soon, a beautiful mustard Atelier Brunette viscose (which makes a sneak cameo by my elbow!). However I still am torn between self covered buttons or buying some of the Atelier Brunette ones. I also plan to make wearable toiles of the Nexus Blouse and Melilot Shirt in the next month or so. This is the second blouse that I managed to squeeze out of 2 metres of crepe fabric, purchased from @exeterfabriccentre The first top in this fabric was short sleeved and I’ve now also made another version of “The Blouse” by @theavidseamstress I absolutely love this pattern, as the fit is so good and it’s really comfortable, easy blouse to wear. Sliding in with a #sewmashup challenge entry here for @secret_life_of_a_seamstress and @cath_craft I used a combination of the @deer_and_doe_patterns #myosotis dress bodice minus the darts to fit my broad back and also the @theavidseamstress #theblouse for the sleeve shape and cuffs. The fabric is a gorgeous cotton batiste from @heysewsister.co.uk which you can see at the cuff is fairly sheer. I’m really pleased with how this mash-up turned out, the breezy fabric is a great cover-up in the heat and the shape combo is just right for me. 💖The Avid Seamstress's 'The Blouse' is a classic design and a joy to make🥰. This blouse is beautiful, just as it is, but I decided to do a #patternhack and add a flounce in the hope of not needing a camisole with this semi-sheer fabric😛. I took the pattern piece from a #vintagesewingpattern in my stash (Women's Weekly BB49 - 👉swipe to check out this beauty). I trimmed the flounce edge along the shoulder, and to ensure the sides of the flouce 'met' after being overlapped at the button placket, I had to do some tweaking. I regret not slashing-and-spreading the pattern piece to get a touch more fullness, but it was such fun to experiment. 🌺🌺🌺#SewAprilBlouse23 – So, What is a Blouse?🌺🌺🌺 ‘What is the difference is between a shirt and a blouse’? 🤔 The shirt is generally identified by its more-or-less straight shape, front button opening, collar and/or collar stand, sleeves, and cuffs. In general the fabric is often a little crisp, or at least has some of that shirting ‘body’. 🤩Sewists we can often turn a shirt into a blouse 🤩. Some sticklers are ardent that blouses ‘do not button through the front’, but most of us perceive the blouse in more nuanced ways, such as: soft fabrication and drapability; generous wearing ease or conversely a more fitted silhouette; and the more regular incorporation of gathers, pleats, tucks, ruffles, shaped yokes, shirring, bows and ties. We would also suggest that blouses often venture into sleeve, cuff and collar play😍. The blouse could be seen as a rejection of the pure utilitarian ‘straight’ form, and an adventure into sensuous, softer fabrics, and embellishments and shapes which are more creative, expressive and fun. Blouses can include shirt-like features, but often the fabric choice and/or flourishes draws a shirt into blouse territory. 👚👚👚Here are some of my blouses. My first attempt at a shirt, this is #theavidseamstressblouse and the first time I’ve used one of their patterns, and I was really impressed, the instructions were fantastic and without making any adjustments it fits really well - it’s having its first outing at work today.
