Last weekend I went on an amazing sewing workshop with my sewing buddy @scissorspapersewn we visited Lisa @theavidseamstress in Dorset and made blazers! It's time to start sharing in detail the epic seven outfits I created to style my @theavidseamstress blazer! I wanted to create a staple wardrobe piece that would go with pretty much anything, whilst looking good and being on trend, and The Blazer fit the bill perfectly! Made with Herringbone wool for a classic look, I've lined it with a sandwashed viscose which not only gives it an 'ooo' factor but feels incredible too 😃 The first look I've styled is an easy put-together outfit of white tee and jeans - very classic! What a start to Me Made May. A finished blazer. I couldn’t be happier with this and thoroughly enjoyed the making process. Pattern: The Blazer @theavidseamstress Beautifully drafted with clear instructions. I made a size 2 toile and the only modification needed was to shorten the sleeves. Fabric: Check wool blend @thefabricmerchantuk was exactly what I was looking for and set me quite a check matching challenge! Spent a fabulous few days in Dorset with @got_the_t_shirt at the studio of @theavidseamstress making my first fully lined garment! Lisa took us through the various stages of #theavidseamstressblazer and we left with an almost complete garment apart from lots of pressing and a bit of hand finishing. The blazer is an interesting construction with pockets in the seam of the front bodice and the dart coming from the shoulder gives great shape to the bodice - no buttons or buttonholes to worry about! Day 13 of #memademay: my fourth pair of Harper trousers by @thatwendyward, another #talcapsleeveshirt and the #avidseamstressblazer. I don’t usually work on Fridays, so I thought I’d go a bit smarter than usual to avoid confusion 😉

Meet my wearable toile of the Avid Seamstress Blazer! My first collar and lined garment…learned a lot with this one. This is from my October @needlesharpny box, which has burgundy flannel, so I decided to use this flannel from @joann_stores for my toile. I cut a size 3 with no mods. Will need to widen the shoulders a bit for the final version. Also I did the last step of folding the hem inside and hand sewing but it’s too short for my liking so I might skip that next time. My advice to newer sewists on this pattern is read each step through a few times, especially towards the end. Last weekend I went on a 2-day Sew a Blazer workshop run by Lisa Falconer of @theavidseamstress at their beautiful studio in Dorset. Arriving with fabric and lining pieces cut and prepped, we got to sew and chat with Lisa over tea, cake, patterns & fabric. Magic! My olive green blazer is sewn in Italian wool twill and lined with viscose acetate, both from my stash. We used The Blazer sewing pattern by The Avid Seamstress which has pockets in the horizontal seam and a full lining. As it’s meant to be worn open, without overlapping at the front, there are no closures. The pattern is rated as an intermediate level sew because of the collar construction and lining. I made a size 3 and made no mods other than lengthening the sleeves by 1cm. If you get the chance to sew with Lisa at her studio you’d be in for a very warm welcome and wonderful sewing experience. I paid for my place and all my supplies so I’m sharing purely because I’m really chuffed with the finished jacket and had a great experience. I finished 52 sewing projects this year, and a smaller number of knitting ones. These are my nine favourites. 1. Indigo and pink #wikstenunfoldingjacket. The pink print lining fabric is a massive departure, but I love it, and the indigo wool-linen main fabric is beautiful, soft, and warm. 2. Bees #talcapsleeveshirt. I was very unsure about using this fabric in a top, and had to be talked into it, but it was a gateway drug, since all subsequent shirts are even more patterned! I love the tiny silver buttons. 3. #avidseamstressblazer. This is more complicated than anything else I’d made. I love how the different bits of leftovers work together: blues and purple on the outer, old grey shirts cut up and pieced in the lining, incorporating the shirt pockets (decorated with faux-scouting badges). 4. Orange #peppermintwidelegpants. “Stylistic departures” is the theme of the early part of this list. I fell in love with this orange twill in a rare trip to a real life fabric shop, and was then moved to sew it up into wide leg trousers. 5. #alonetogethersweater. The only knitting in my favourites! I made this in parallel with two friends, using up scraps of hand spun yarn. 6. Turquoise cord #allwellstudiopants. I adjusted the pocket placement and added hand stitching detail. They’re pieced from two bolt ends, and I like the calf seams as a reminder of that. 7. Denim #allwellstudiopants. One of the rules I set for this list was only one of each pattern. These are the exception, but I’m justifying it because the pockets and waistband are different, as are the top stitching details. 8. Black linen #talcufftop. I love the top stitching on this, and the contrast bias binding. 9. #lichenduster. The herringbone wool fabric is by far the most expensive piece of fabric I’ve bought, and it was a pig to sew because it unravels as soon as you look at it, but it’s beautiful and warm, and I added a lining in grey flannel. #imakemyownclothes #memadeeveryday #sewing2021

Finished off my Blazer kit from @theavidseamstress last night ready for a panel session today! Wanted to make a blazer for a while but got really intimidated with the tailoring and extra notions needed so I decided to try out this pattern which is a bit more relaxed fit. Took the kit on holiday and even squeezed out a skirt from the material. It was actually a relatively easy sew and took maybe 2.5 days. Instructions were really clear, I think in future I might take a centimeter out at the shoulders but I'm quite narrow. No other modifications and I love it! Super comfy, love the lining fabric and just really enjoyed making it. Feel ready to tackle a fitted tailored jacket now and definitely more of these in the future. Last weekend I went on an amazing sewing workshop with my sewing buddy @scissorspapersewn we visited Lisa @theavidseamstress in Dorset and made blazers! Lisa is warm, welcoming, and and very supportive teacher - our blazers came together beautifully. I would highly recommend one of her workshops. Spent a fabulous few days in Dorset with @got_the_t_shirt at the studio of @theavidseamstress making my first fully lined garment! Lisa took us through the various stages of #theavidseamstressblazer and we left with an almost complete garment apart from lots of pressing and a bit of hand finishing. The blazer is an interesting construction with pockets in the seam of the front bodice and the dart coming from the shoulder gives great shape to the bodice - no buttons or buttonholes to worry about! Ich habe meinen ersten Blazer genäht! Und ich finde, es ist ganz gut gelungen. Ich habe einen Wollstoff von @anitapavanistoffe und als Futter eine Viskose von @atelierbrunette genommen. Genäht habe ich #theblazer von @theavidseamstress. Einen schönen offenen Blazer und ein gutes Einsteigermodell. Ich habe wie fast immer Torso und Ärmel gekürzt und eine FBA gemacht. Dazu habe ich erst einen passenden Brustabnäher konstruiert und den dann in den Schulterabnäher reingedreht. Das hat erstaunlich gut funktioniert. Für mehr Struktur habe ich für das Innenleben noch verschiedene Einlagen verwendet. Die kann ich gerne im nächsten Post zeigen. ---- I sewed my first ever Blazer! And I think it went quite good. I used a wool fabric from @anitapavanistoffe and as lining a viscose from @atelierbrunette. I made #theblazer from @theavidseamstress. A beautiful open blazer and a good beginner model. As always I had to shorten torso and sleeves and I had to do a FBA. For that I first constructed a fitting bust dart and rotated it then into the shoulder dart. This went surprisingly well. For more structure I built several layers of interfacing. Wow! Just look what can be achieved with a lot of patience and hard work. Jane has been sewing for less than a year and has been coming along to our dress making class on Monday mornings. Ich habe meinen ersten Blazer genäht! Und ich finde, es ist ganz gut gelungen. Ich habe einen Wollstoff von @anitapavanistoffe und als Futter eine Viskose von @atelierbrunette genommen. Genäht habe ich #theblazer von @theavidseamstress. Einen schönen offenen Blazer und ein gutes Einsteigermodell. Ich habe wie fast immer Torso und Ärmel gekürzt und eine FBA gemacht. Dazu habe ich erst einen passenden Brustabnäher konstruiert und den dann in den Schulterabnäher reingedreht. Das hat erstaunlich gut funktioniert. Für mehr Struktur habe ich für das Innenleben noch verschiedene Einlagen verwendet. Die kann ich gerne im nächsten Post zeigen. ---- I sewed my first ever Blazer! And I think it went quite good. I used a wool fabric from @anitapavanistoffe and as lining a viscose from @atelierbrunette. I made #theblazer from @theavidseamstress. A beautiful open blazer and a good beginner model. As always I had to shorten torso and sleeves and I had to do a FBA. For that I first constructed a fitting bust dart and rotated it then into the shoulder dart. This went surprisingly well. For more structure I built several layers of interfacing. Final version of @theavidseamstress blazer. Spent a fabulous few days in Dorset with @got_the_t_shirt at the studio of @theavidseamstress making my first fully lined garment! Lisa took us through the various stages of #theavidseamstressblazer and we left with an almost complete garment apart from lots of pressing and a bit of hand finishing. The blazer is an interesting construction with pockets in the seam of the front bodice and the dart coming from the shoulder gives great shape to the bodice - no buttons or buttonholes to worry about! I shall go to the ball! I’m off to a @theavidseamstress sewing retreat next week and yesterday I finally finished prepping all the pieces for the pattern I’ll sew there - The Blazer. It felt like there were 564 of them to cut out of paper/fabric/lining/interfacing, notch, attach interfacing & re-notch. But I got there!
