Finished my camel wool coat, giving off cozy New York fall / SF winter vibes 🍂 Making a wool coat has been a sewing goal of mine since the beginning. This has been 3 year long project where I got hung up on making it perfect, which delayed the finish. Excited and proud to finally wear it out! I made a coat! In fact, I made The Coat from @theavidseamstress This was a good first coat pattern, not too complicated, but some lovely features like the collar and pockets set into the princess seams. My first kick pleat also. The pattern was easy enough to follow, but I was grateful for the online blog tutorial as the photos there are really clear. The blog also had some additional options, such as binding all the visible edges and lining the sleeve in addition to the buggy lining. I figured I'd want a coat to last and so went all in and did it all. Nearly 20m of binding! I made the coat with most panels in a size 5, grading to a 6 where the back and side front meet. I think it was *just* enough. The fabric is from @bombaystores_fabrics I got 4m for £20 (!!!) At the Harrogate knitting and stitching show back last year. And I believe its a wool/poly mix. This was my first coat, the pattern was easy to follow, and for me the techniques were advanced enough that I felt like I was achieving something but not so hard that it was frustrating (mostly 😉). Spent a week in Hawick, Scotland - the home of Tweed - and bought this gorgeous woven tweed from @lovatmill. I want to make a winter coat but I want to get it right! The goal this weekend was to finish the #Theavidseamstressthecoat from @TheAvidSeamstress. Finally done and I absolutely adore this coat! I made some changes to the pattern - made it fully lined, added two more buttons and also a belt. I used a soft, lovely wool from @merchantandmills with a small herringbone pattern. Yesterday was the perfect weather to get out and enjoy downtown Ottawa (it’s back to snowing today)-and I was happy to outnaway the parka and bring out my #avidseamstresscoat I get so much joy in wearing me-made garments and bringing out my favourites each season. I’m so happy spring is around the corner and I can shed the boots and big coats.

Thanks for all the support and comments. A big burst of motivation came from the @ottawagarmentguild coat sew along group! Details on the lining: This pattern comes with a half buggy lining and requires bound seams. As I wanted this a little more Ottawa-weather tolerant, I decided to draft a full lining. Luckily the pattern website has a tutorial on the sleeve, so that part was easy. The back had me head-scratching though. I wanted a centre back pleat for ease, and keep the vent at the bottom. Thankfully I got my hands on the Easy Guide to Sewing Linings (Connie Long) from the library and it had this handy sketch to help me out. I used the Rumana Coat tutorial on the SOI blog to help with the vent, and also bagged out the lining and pulled it through the vent. My bottom linings aren’t level, and it’s not perfect. But it’s pretty darn great for a first time at drafting and bagging out a coat. The pattern sizes are limited, however the pattern calls for 8” of ease so I sized down one size and could have even gone one more. #sewlimitedsizing pattern up to 48”b/42”w/51”h Adjustments: two inches removed for height on front and back, added a full lining (more later on that), UK size 10. Thrifted wool was block fused with mid-weight interfacing, lined with Kasha lining. This is the @helens__closet #yorkpinafore in a buttery soft #libertyfabric corduroy from @wearethefabricstore . I lined my York to give it a bit more structure ( also quicker.. no bias binding ) it’s layered with another LS #nikkotop by @truebias . My new cold weather fav layering top. I made my coat of dreams! (Expect to get spammed with pics of this because I LOVE IT!). I used @theavidseamstress #AvidSeamstressCoat pattern and ‘potting shed’ colour Melton wool from @fabworksmillshop (both Christmas presents) with viscose lining from @rainbowfabrickilburn . The pattern isn’t fully lined so I drafted the lining myself and followed the sleeve lining tutorial on the Avid Seamstress website (there’s lots of helpful extras in their tutorial section). Fit wise, I went by finished garment measurements to get a fit I was happy with (5” ease) and ended up sizing down two sizes from the body measurement chart. The pattern is designed to be a relaxed fit but I didn’t want the oversized look that I would have otherwise got. I did make a toile of the top section so curved the back seam in more, straightened the underarm sleeve seam and graded out across the hips. I’m really proud that I managed to find the headspace for this given how I’m struggling to concentrate at the moment and I’m so happy with the finished result! It may even warrant dusting off the massively neglected blog! 😱🥳

Well 2020, that's a wrap (top? 🤪)! What a year this has been.. But in spite of all the immense bumness of it all, I have actually managed to make some of my favourite makes ever. In fact, I've made more things than any past year (despite working harder than any other year, little achievement there!) - 26 makes that made the gram, and a few more failures oops.. 😅). These are my 9 favourite makes - not necessarily the favourites by y'all - and I'm just so immensely in love with them all. This was the year of firsts - the year of my first wool coat and first trench coat, first swimwear item, first trousers and jeans (and my beloved Persephone!). On this list feature both of the Zadie jumpsuits I made for me and my sister, as I basically lived in mine this summer. I MADE A WINTER COAT! This was a real labour of love. The wool I used was too thin for Canadian winters, so I interlined it with two thrifted blankets. I also drafted a full lining, rather than using the buggy lining included in the pattern. The buttons are salvaged from an old coat of my grandfather's. I had to hand sew the buttonholes because it was too thick for my machine. Last hack (not pictured) is that I made a detachable hood too! I'm beyond proud of it and it makes me hate winter a tiny bit less! ❄️❄️❄️ . I really liked the #avidseamstresscoat pattern. This is a size 4 with no alterations. I would likely grade out the hips in the next one and do a sway back adjustment but overall it fits really well. I can't wait to make a spring version in a lighter fabric! I made it slightly oversized so I can fit jumpers or layers underneath. The coat fabric is from @sewconfident & a beautiful bright blue. A while ago, around November, @sewconfidentjenny , showed these wool blend fabrics off, on Fabric Friday & I'd had this pattern in my stash for ages. It's actually a really straightforward sew, you go definitely attempt it as a confident beginner. @theavidseamstress have a really great tutorial on their website for any tricks bits (the collar). It had its first outing today when I went out for lunch with my aunt @iamgrannyliz

This might take a while, I find it difficult to get uninterrupted sewing time & trying to explain this to the family is difficult. They don't get the 'your stopping my flow', which can just make me feel like 'what's the point'. I can't be the only dressmaker who feels this way. I don't want to turn anyone away if they need anything or help, but my stress levels can be affected badly affected by this. In-between buying this & now, I've had to contend with a fractured tailbone (fell down the stairs) then christmas & new year which not much time off between & honestly, you try sitting on a broken bum, I was in bed for weeks 😀.

This might take a while, I find it difficult to get uninterrupted sewing time & trying to explain this to the family is difficult. They don't get the 'your stopping my flow', which can just make me feel like 'what's the point'. I can't be the only dressmaker who feels this way. I don't want to turn anyone away if they need anything or help, but my stress levels can be affected badly affected by this. Anyway, this gorgeous fabric is from @sewconfident , when I saw @sewconfidentjenny show it off on one if her fabric Friday's, I knew it had to be mine! In-between buying this & now, I've had to contend with a fractured tailbone (fell down the stairs) then christmas & new year which not much time off between & honestly, you try sitting on a broken bum, I was in bed for weeks 😀.

The goal this weekend was to finish the #Theavidseamstressthecoat from @TheAvidSeamstress. Finally done and I absolutely adore this coat! I made some changes to the pattern - made it fully lined, added two more buttons and also a belt. I used a soft, lovely wool from @merchantandmills with a small herringbone pattern. Thanks for all the support and comments. A big burst of motivation came from the @ottawagarmentguild coat sew along group! Details on the lining: This pattern comes with a half buggy lining and requires bound seams. As I wanted this a little more Ottawa-weather tolerant, I decided to draft a full lining. Luckily the pattern website has a tutorial on the sleeve, so that part was easy. The back had me head-scratching though. I wanted a centre back pleat for ease, and keep the vent at the bottom. Thankfully I got my hands on the Easy Guide to Sewing Linings (Connie Long) from the library and it had this handy sketch to help me out. I used the Rumana Coat tutorial on the SOI blog to help with the vent, and also bagged out the lining and pulled it through the vent. My bottom linings aren’t level, and it’s not perfect. But it’s pretty darn great for a first time at drafting and bagging out a coat. I’ve had a really productive day! Haven’t created any garments but have sorted my fabrics and piled a few of them into the order of my next planned makes, cut out a TATB Zadie and a Ness ready to be sewn, mended my sparkly Freya and comfy Linden, cut out my coat pattern and even whipped up some drawstring bags ready to be made into story sacks for EYFS as it’s back to work tomorrow! I made my coat of dreams! (Expect to get spammed with pics of this because I LOVE IT!). I used @theavidseamstress #AvidSeamstressCoat pattern and ‘potting shed’ colour Melton wool from @fabworksmillshop (both Christmas presents) with viscose lining from @rainbowfabrickilburn . The pattern isn’t fully lined so I drafted the lining myself and followed the sleeve lining tutorial on the Avid Seamstress website (there’s lots of helpful extras in their tutorial section). Fit wise, I went by finished garment measurements to get a fit I was happy with (5” ease) and ended up sizing down two sizes from the body measurement chart. The pattern is designed to be a relaxed fit but I didn’t want the oversized look that I would have otherwise got. I did make a toile of the top section so curved the back seam in more, straightened the underarm sleeve seam and graded out across the hips. I’m really proud that I managed to find the headspace for this given how I’m struggling to concentrate at the moment and I’m so happy with the finished result! It may even warrant dusting off the massively neglected blog! 😱🥳

The Avid Seamstress’ Coat - bloody love it!
