Warning! Air-conditioning is vicious in Australia. Everyone knows it gets hot over the summer months here. But I bet not many travel guides suggest packing layers for when you enter air-conditioned spaces. My work is no exception. I made a pair of #brierpant in delicious chocolate heavy weight linen to wear at work this summer, and I love them! 🤍 about my wedding dress 🤍 My dress was inspired by Ashish SS2016 collection and soft serve ice cream cones with rainbow sprinkles🍦🌈. I knew I wanted to sew a simple shape that wasn’t fussy and that I could wear normal undergarments with. I also wanted to spend as much time as possible on the sequins and beads and less time on construction of the dress. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out but of course if I could make it again I would make some changes 🙃 I had a lot of fun beading it and would 100% do another beading project again, even if it takes hours and hours 😅 👗Pattern: For the bodice, I used @patternscout #pshanatank because it was simple and I knew from other sewists that the fit was *chef’s kiss* especially for D cup sizes! I had to sequin and bead the front and back pieces before sewing them together and then pray that when I did the burrito method to sew the lining, the sequins wouldn’t snag. Luckily, it worked without any issues! 🙏🏼 For the skirt, I just eye-balled an A-line skirt. 👀 ✂️ Fabric: For the top layer, I used ivory silk organza from @moodfabrics. The organza is backed with deadstock silk crepe de chine in off-white from @stonemountainfabric. ☀️🌵I discovered a few things about what I wear during #memademay24, one of which is I need more basics! I am slowly building on that, in colors and fabrics I like and like to wear. This #psHanaTank by @PatternScout is made of inky drapey linen rayon, cut at the hip line on the pattern, modified a tad to use the selvedge along the button placket. This is a great addition to my closet, worn alone or layered. 😊 I also hemmed these RTW jeans that fit great, but were too long to wear so I never reached for them. I kept the original hem and I’m really happy with these jeans now. Thanks for an inspiring challenge @sewover50! I am obsessed with the #pshanatank by @patternscout. It’s become my favorite go-to summer top. The first one was made in some lovely cotton blend Hawaiian fabric gifted to me; the second in some gorgeous Liberty lawn fabric purchased from @fabricplacebasement. I made the cropped version for both, adding 2 inches in length and moving the bust dart down 1-1/2”. On the second one, I also added a bit of ease to the side seams. I sewed the buttons through all layers, omitting the buttonholes.

So what I’m enjoying about this process is looking into my closet and trying to think of what I’ve made that I can wear, trying things on that I haven’t worn since I made them for one reason or another, finding ways to appreciate them again and feeling confident in my choices. There's been a lot of awesome visible mending on the interwebs lately. And there's been some incredible invisible mending as well. So when these ripped pants "mysteriously" showed up in my mending pile, there was obviously only one thing to do; ignore all of the mending inspiration and chop them up to make something for myself instead! I used the Hana tank pattern by Pattern Scout, with some modifications: - shortened 1" overall - 1/2" forward shoulder adjustment - scooped out the front armscye by 1/4" and added this width to the back armscye.  - reduced the width of the front by 1/4" under the arm graded to nothing at the hip - reduced the back neckline by 3/8" either side of CB (for a total of 3/4" reduction) - removed 1" from the back width along CB to reduce neck gape and overall volume I also had to add a CB seam in order to fit the pattern to the fabric I had.  It sounds like a lot when I write it all down! But it was all very easy in practise. And now I have a super cute new summer tank, without having to do any mending. Huzzah! Another garment in my "Dress Happy" initiative is ready, and I could not be more pleased with this ridiculous concoction of bright saturated colors, cotton seersucker, and ginormous sleeves. It's also a tale of perseverance and grit, since it started as a midi-length dress, then as a mini-dress, and has now been chopped into a tunic length. Why? Because it originally looked like a nightgown for a clown (do clowns wear nightgowns?), then a very, VERY short dress that definitely would have exposed my nether bits with only a hint of a breeze as excuse. I just kept chopping until I hit a length that I can live with. And live with it, I shall! This is another #PSHanaTank hack, with huge floopy sleeves (just fabric-width panels gathered to fit the armscye) that I fiddled with until they were "just right." I’ve been a long time wearer and appreciator of linen, wrinkles and all, for quite some time now. Somehow I’ve never sewn with it. I decided to remedy that with the Striped Rayon Linen from @surgefabricshop. While this blend is predominantly Rayon, it looks, feels and behaves more like linen. I’m a big fan of the fabric. So much so that I’ve already worn the dress 4x in the last 2 weeks. It’s extremely comfortable in this southern great and humidity. Take care to prewash & dry the fabric prior to cutting: it does shrink. I’ve since laundered the same way (wash cold, tumble dry on low) without any additional shrinkage. Pattern is the Hana from @patternscout. While it matches my typical style, the dress does nothing to compliment my otherwise straight shape. The addition of a belt helps but I may stick to the shirt views from here on out. I have no complaints with the pattern or instructions. I like the all-in-one button placket. It made for an easy and, dare I say, foolproof construction. An easy, happy tank dress using silk noil from @theconfidentstitch. This was my first time using silk noil and it was shockingly easy - it felt as stable as quilting cotton, but the finished garment has much more drape and movement. Pattern: @patternscout #pshanatank Mods: I made a 14, which is a size larger than the tank top versions I’ve made in the past, but I wanted the extra ease. Studies show that the most impactful way to get people to vote is if they are encouraged personally by a friend/acquaintance. "Relational organizing" is more impactful than sending postcards, or making a call to a phone bank list, and even more impactful that having volunteers canvass door to door. That's why I've chosen to put my efforts this year into being a Ward Captain and getting people connected, block-by-block, with their fellow Democrats who can encourage each other to stay involved. (Virginia has elections every single year, and our City sometimes has elections several times a year, so we can't get complacent.) Tonight, I'm speaking to a group of local citizens about voting in this November's elections, and recruiting volunteers to be neighborhood captains to get out the vote. I will be seeing people in the flesh this evening, and I can hardly contain myself. I walked downstairs and my entire family gasped, and my middle child asked, "mom, are you going to a ball?" Honestly, it feels like I'm headed to prom -- I'm full of excitement and butterflies. I have been so very, very cautious about staying at home and avoiding social events. But this is one where I'm willing to take the risk (albeit with a mask and hand sanitizer and 6 feet of social distance). Will people know that I have a full face of make-up on? Probably not. But in 2020, wearing lipstick under your mask is the equivalent to wearing fancy underwear. We had a house fire. Two of my kids can legally be behind the wheel. The garden is unruly and prolific, and the peach trees have fruited for the first time. I’ve switched medications and my years-long digestive issues have disappeared overnight. We have 22 baby chicks living in my dressing room. The dog got into the garden this morning and happily buried herself in the compost pile and now reeks of rotted vegetables. In my “free time” I’m acting as campaign manager for four City Council races. I am taking Vitamin D supplements. I’ve been a long time wearer and appreciator of linen, wrinkles and all, for quite some time now. Somehow I’ve never sewn with it. I decided to remedy that with the Striped Rayon Linen from @surgefabricshop. While this blend is predominantly Rayon, it looks, feels and behaves more like linen. I’m a big fan of the fabric. So much so that I’ve already worn the dress 4x in the last 2 weeks. It’s extremely comfortable in this southern great and humidity. Take care to prewash & dry the fabric prior to cutting: it does shrink. I’ve since laundered the same way (wash cold, tumble dry on low) without any additional shrinkage. Pattern is the Hana from @patternscout. While it matches my typical style, the dress does nothing to compliment my otherwise straight shape. The addition of a belt helps but I may stick to the shirt views from here on out. I have no complaints with the pattern or instructions. I like the all-in-one button placket. It made for an easy and, dare I say, foolproof construction. ☀️🌵I discovered a few things about what I wear during #memademay24, one of which is I need more basics! I am slowly building on that, in colors and fabrics I like and like to wear. This is a great addition to my closet, worn alone or layered. 😊 I also hemmed these RTW jeans that fit great, but were too long to wear so I never reached for them. 🤍 about my wedding dress 🤍 My dress was inspired by Ashish SS2016 collection and soft serve ice cream cones with rainbow sprinkles🍦🌈. I knew I wanted to sew a simple shape that wasn’t fussy and that I could wear normal undergarments with. I also wanted to spend as much time as possible on the sequins and beads and less time on construction of the dress. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out but of course if I could make it again I would make some changes 🙃 I had a lot of fun beading it and would 100% do another beading project again, even if it takes hours and hours 😅 👗Pattern: For the bodice, I used @patternscout #pshanatank because it was simple and I knew from other sewists that the fit was *chef’s kiss* especially for D cup sizes! I had to sequin and bead the front and back pieces before sewing them together and then pray that when I did the burrito method to sew the lining, the sequins wouldn’t snag. Luckily, it worked without any issues! 🙏🏼 For the skirt, I just eye-balled an A-line skirt. 👀 ✂️ Fabric: For the top layer, I used ivory silk organza from @moodfabrics. The organza is backed with deadstock silk crepe de chine in off-white from @stonemountainfabric. There's been a lot of awesome visible mending on the interwebs lately. And there's been some incredible invisible mending as well. So when these ripped pants "mysteriously" showed up in my mending pile, there was obviously only one thing to do; ignore all of the mending inspiration and chop them up to make something for myself instead! I used the Hana tank pattern by Pattern Scout, with some modifications: - shortened 1" overall - 1/2" forward shoulder adjustment - scooped out the front armscye by 1/4" and added this width to the back armscye.  - reduced the width of the front by 1/4" under the arm graded to nothing at the hip - reduced the back neckline by 3/8" either side of CB (for a total of 3/4" reduction) - removed 1" from the back width along CB to reduce neck gape and overall volume I also had to add a CB seam in order to fit the pattern to the fabric I had.  It sounds like a lot when I write it all down! But it was all very easy in practise. And now I have a super cute new summer tank, without having to do any mending. Huzzah! Another garment in my "Dress Happy" initiative is ready, and I could not be more pleased with this ridiculous concoction of bright saturated colors, cotton seersucker, and ginormous sleeves. It's also a tale of perseverance and grit, since it started as a midi-length dress, then as a mini-dress, and has now been chopped into a tunic length. Why? Because it originally looked like a nightgown for a clown (do clowns wear nightgowns?), then a very, VERY short dress that definitely would have exposed my nether bits with only a hint of a breeze as excuse. I just kept chopping until I hit a length that I can live with. And live with it, I shall! This is another #PSHanaTank hack, with huge floopy sleeves (just fabric-width panels gathered to fit the armscye) that I fiddled with until they were "just right." I needed some more summer tanks in my wardrobe and the @patternscout hana tank seemed like the perfect match for this @libertyfabrics remnant I bought in Florence last month. Liberty prints aren’t usually my style but I couldn’t resist this one! Pretty sure this is the fewest changes I’ve ever had to make to a an indie pattern - hooray for cup sizes in sewing patterns! I cut an 8 & C cup, added the tiniest amount across the bust and took 1/4” from outta shoulder seam that’s it. I used poppers/snap fasteners for a quick win on this one. I am obsessed with the #pshanatank by @patternscout. It’s become my favorite go-to summer top. The first one was made in some lovely cotton blend Hawaiian fabric gifted to me; the second in some gorgeous Liberty lawn fabric purchased from @fabricplacebasement. I made the cropped version for both, adding 2 inches in length and moving the bust dart down 1-1/2”. On the second one, I also added a bit of ease to the side seams. I sewed the buttons through all layers, omitting the buttonholes.

After a relatively cool and damp June, summer has arrived here in central Virginia with a hot and humid bang. And now alI I want to do is wear floaty dresses in natural fabrics while I dash from air-conditioned space to air-conditioned space. I got this large-scale tropical print in crinkle cotton from Doop Designs last year, and it sat in my stash while I waited for inspiration. As I prepared for a quick 4-day trip to Mexico a few weeks ago, I suddenly realized a tiered tank dress was the solution to all of life’s problems. Cue frantic pre-travel sewing and voilà! I adore this dress, and I plan to wear it weekly until October. The dress is a major hack of the #PSHanaTank, in which I recklessly cut the top at a cropped length, then added three 12-inch panels of fabric, each roughly twice as full as the previous layer. It was a fabulous use of 4 yards of fabric, and was very nearly a zero waste project. I wish I had added a little extra length in the front bodice to account for my bountiful busom (since it pulls up a bit when I’m walking around), but with that busy pattern no one will notice except for me. Is there any fabric better to wear than double gauze when it is hot. I originally planned these as pyjamas, but they are so cool to wear in the hot weather, I might need to re-think that. The shorts are the @anna.zoe.sewing Lisbeth pants, shortened to shorts. I made the version with the fully elasticated waist and drawstring. I have made this pattern as trousers before, so I knew they fitted well. The top is a @patternscout Hana tank, the bias binding on the armholes and neckline was tricky in a double gauze. I probably should have used a cotton to make the bias binding 🤔 Fabric is a double gauze with tiny sunshines on from @emporia_patterns I love it so much, I have just purchased the black colour way.

An easy, happy tank dress using silk noil from @theconfidentstitch. This was my first time using silk noil and it was shockingly easy - it felt as stable as quilting cotton, but the finished garment has much more drape and movement. Pattern: @patternscout #pshanatank Mods: I made a 14, which is a size larger than the tank top versions I’ve made in the past, but I wanted the extra ease. That's why I've chosen to put my efforts this year into being a Ward Captain and getting people connected, block-by-block, with their fellow Democrats who can encourage each other to stay involved. (Virginia has elections every single year, and our City sometimes has elections several times a year, so we can't get complacent.) Tonight, I'm speaking to a group of local citizens about voting in this November's elections, and recruiting volunteers to be neighborhood captains to get out the vote. I will be seeing people in the flesh this evening, and I can hardly contain myself. I walked downstairs and my entire family gasped, and my middle child asked, "mom, are you going to a ball?" Now for my Hana Tank + Dress obsession... I’ve made two tie front blouses, a cropped tank and a dress. The first tied blouse is made out of @rubystarsociety citrus print rayon (designed by Melody Miller). It is so soft and easy to work with despite the fact that it’s slippery and thin. I could wear it everyday. Also the colors are vibrant and magnificent. The black shorts pictured are self drafted made out of a linen remnant. The cropped tank is made from @merchantandmills Ikat cotton. I love the texture in the weave. Both the rayon & Ikat are from @gather_here, in Cambridge. They have a huge Merchant & Mills selection! And the dress is made in @robertkaufman chambray. We had a house fire. Two of my kids can legally be behind the wheel. The garden is unruly and prolific, and the peach trees have fruited for the first time. I’ve switched medications and my years-long digestive issues have disappeared overnight. We have 22 baby chicks living in my dressing room. The dog got into the garden this morning and happily buried herself in the compost pile and now reeks of rotted vegetables. In my “free time” I’m acting as campaign manager for four City Council races. I am taking Vitamin D supplements. I’ve been a long time wearer and appreciator of linen, wrinkles and all, for quite some time now. Somehow I’ve never sewn with it. I decided to remedy that with the Striped Rayon Linen from @surgefabricshop. While this blend is predominantly Rayon, it looks, feels and behaves more like linen. I’m a big fan of the fabric. So much so that I’ve already worn the dress 4x in the last 2 weeks. It’s extremely comfortable in this southern great and humidity. Take care to prewash & dry the fabric prior to cutting: it does shrink. I’ve since laundered the same way (wash cold, tumble dry on low) without any additional shrinkage. Pattern is the Hana from @patternscout. While it matches my typical style, the dress does nothing to compliment my otherwise straight shape. The addition of a belt helps but I may stick to the shirt views from here on out. I have no complaints with the pattern or instructions. I like the all-in-one button placket. It made for an easy and, dare I say, foolproof construction. Voici la robe Hana #pshanadress de @patternscout en satin de coton Frida trouvé chez @diffuslainetissus en janvier dernier. Les boutons ont été récupérés sur un vêtement de ma fille quand elle était petite. J'ai cousu toutes les boutonnières mais j'arrive à enfiler la robe sans l'ouvrir. Le patron prévoit des coutures anglaises (appelées french seams là-bas, va comprendre 😅) et une finition au biais. Je regrette qu'il n'y ai pas de poches mais ça peut se rajouter. Et il n'y a aucune illustration dans les explications ce qui m'a un peu manqué. Bonne journée 🙋‍♀️

An easy, happy tank dress using silk noil from @theconfidentstitch. This was my first time using silk noil and it was shockingly easy - it felt as stable as quilting cotton, but the finished garment has much more drape and movement. Pattern: @patternscout #pshanatank Mods: I made a 14, which is a size larger than the tank top versions I’ve made in the past, but I wanted the extra ease. Me Made May Day 25 I was looking for a simple shift dress with a button placket for the Gingham Stonewashed linen from @blackbirdfabrics. As soon as I saw the bottom ruffle that @craftyprofessor added to the @patternscout Hana dress, I knew I found it! I made a size 12 with the D cup. I did a muslin to the waist and subsequently lowered the darts by about one inch. Very nice that there are cup size choices. I had a lot of trouble with the topstitching, which should have been SO simple in such a crisp woven. It kept gathering despite being at the right tension. I finally shortened the stitch length and that worked. And the buttonholes, aarrgghh! My buttonholer and machine were just not cooperating. And then I noticed the spacing is off towards the ruffle. Next time (if there is one) I think I would like a deeper ruffle, with the dress the same length. And OMG pockets! What did I not add them? It’s done! I’m completely out of sync for #sewankarafabric21 but I’m so happy to finally use Ankara Fabric. I had some lovely sewing tips from @mapalo_store where I bought my fabric. The main takeaway was that pattern matching is very important. You can see on my fabric that my pattern is not mirrored symmetrically so I’ve found a centre point for the waist and centre front and went from there. I’ve used one of my favourite dress patterns. I used the #pshanadress by @patternscout as it doesn’t distract from the fabric. The only modification was to lengthen the dress so it could fit with the fabric design. Another version of the #pshanadress by @patternscout ... I did say this was a #repeatpattern 🙂 This time I made the button down version ... fourteen buttons!! The buttons would have intimidated me at the start of the year so I feel happy that I’m getting more confident with my skills. ☀️Sizing notes - I made the size 12 without any alterations. My 📏B37:W32:H39 and length wise, it stops just above my knees. ☀️The colour of fabric can sometimes be difficult to capture accurately when I’m editing to correct for skin tone. Also, the colour can change depending on device. So, I’ve taken a close up where the colour is better represented. It’s a teal and buttons are a light grey. Fabric is a cotton linen blend from @spotlightstores

That's why I've chosen to put my efforts this year into being a Ward Captain and getting people connected, block-by-block, with their fellow Democrats who can encourage each other to stay involved. (Virginia has elections every single year, and our City sometimes has elections several times a year, so we can't get complacent.) Tonight, I'm speaking to a group of local citizens about voting in this November's elections, and recruiting volunteers to be neighborhood captains to get out the vote. I had so much fun doing this photo shoot today, so sorrynotsorry you’re going to be seeing a lot of this dress😂 I’m pretty sure an empty university campus is the best place for taking photos of yourself! So this is my newest double cotton gauze dress and my first project for the Mood Sewing Network! I was inspired by an ad on Facebook and took a screenshot and tried to recreate it! Swipe to see my inspo. It was a SUPER EASY hack. I took the #pshanadress by @patternscout and cut it off at the crotch and added a ruffle. I was so precise (not) that I held up the paper pattern piece to determine where to cut it off. I then used the rest of my fabric for the peplum. I got a yard and a half so i cut the remaining fabric in half so that the front and back peplum are each the width of the fabric. I tried it on before attaching the peplum and it was going to be too long, so I cut about 6 inches off the bottom of the dress before attaching the peplum. The color is true purple which is most true in the second pic. Because I’m part of the mood sewing network bloggers, I’ve been given a credit for fabric, but all opinions are my own. I really like double gauze! This is really reasonable at 7.99 a yard and after you wash it it’s almost spongy... you definitely don’t need a lining and I love the texture. I did very little pressing to avoid distorting the texture. Also, it doesn’t wrinkle!!! 🤍 about my wedding dress 🤍 My dress was inspired by Ashish SS2016 collection and soft serve ice cream cones with rainbow sprinkles🍦🌈. I knew I wanted to sew a simple shape that wasn’t fussy and that I could wear normal undergarments with. I also wanted to spend as much time as possible on the sequins and beads and less time on construction of the dress. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out but of course if I could make it again I would make some changes 🙃 I had a lot of fun beading it and would 100% do another beading project again, even if it takes hours and hours 😅 👗Pattern: For the bodice, I used @patternscout #pshanatank because it was simple and I knew from other sewists that the fit was *chef’s kiss* especially for D cup sizes! I had to sequin and bead the front and back pieces before sewing them together and then pray that when I did the burrito method to sew the lining, the sequins wouldn’t snag. Luckily, it worked without any issues! 🙏🏼 For the skirt, I just eye-balled an A-line skirt. 👀 ✂️ Fabric: For the top layer, I used ivory silk organza from @moodfabrics. The organza is backed with deadstock silk crepe de chine in off-white from @stonemountainfabric. This should have been an alteration but my careless cutting turned it into a complete transformation. I made this dress hack of the Zadie Jumpsuit by Paper Theory last year. I absolutely love the fabric. It's a red and white shot linen from the Fabric Godmother that reads as pink and has a bit of an iridescent shimmer when the light hits it.  I had been wanting to make a dress hack of this pattern for a while, and in theory the dress was beautiful. I used my standard adjustments for the Zadie, and the bodice was perfect. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough fabric in the wrap to stop it from flapping open, especially when sitting down. As a result, I have not been wearing this dress at all. I decided that the solution was to remove the skirt, shorten it and use the excess fabric to extend the width of the skirt and make it a gathered skirt for more coverage. Sadly, silly Theresa was not paying attention and accidentally cut the facing off of the bodice instead of the skirt and totally destroyed it. 🙃 Plan B: I turned this into a Hana Dress by Pattern Scout, one that I'd been wanting to try for ages. I had to add a seam at the waist to make it work with the offcuts from this dress. It's honestly a very pretty dress. I prefer a bit more shaping in the waist for my figure, and I can't help but feel sad for the dress that I've lost. Still, this will be lovely and light to wear in the summer, and most importantly, I will wear it!! A functional Zadie wrap dress will have to wait. I used really fun bias binding from @thespeckyseamstress and buttons from @pigeonwishes.shops which make this dress all the more special. Keeping up with that me-made-May pledge! Yey, the sunshine is back 😊☀️ Which means I can wear my latest make the @patternscout Hana dress. I have made a Hana top before which I loved, so pleased to have a dress version. The fabric is a striped linen from @poundfabrics costing a bargain £3 a metre. I think they still have some of the blue colourway left. It is a lovely cotton blend linen, which doesn’t crease too much.

I’ve been craving “pretty dresses” for a few months, which is weird. My longstanding wardrobe goals are: 1) polished, 2) classic, 3) effortless. My intention, to wear my wardrobe an average of 30 times, also means that everything needs to pull double- or triple-duty — and I, honestly I don’t have the closet space to hold dresses that are only worn once or twice a year.) But this summer I was invited to a few garden parties, evening galas and other events where nothing in my wardrobe felt quite right. I definitely wasn’t looking for frilly, ruffle or otherwise “fussy” things, but I also felt pulled to something that was explicitly “fun occasion” worthy. That need launched my “Dress Happy” initiative back in June, leading to several new, fun dresses that work at a poolside BBQ or a rooftop bar at sunset. I had originally earmarked this mid-weight emerald linen for a boiler suit, but decided to throw caution to the wind and veer in another direction. And I adore the finished product, a midi length #ElodieDress with slash pockets that I hacked myself (the patch pockets that come with the pattern seemed too informal). I stayed up until 1am last night to put the finishing touches on it, and all I can can say is #WorthIt. Am I going to a garden party today, or a rooftop bar? Another version of the #pshanadress by @patternscout ... I did say this was a #repeatpattern 🙂 This time I made the button down version ... fourteen buttons!! The buttons would have intimidated me at the start of the year so I feel happy that I’m getting more confident with my skills. ☀️Sizing notes - I made the size 12 without any alterations. My 📏B37:W32:H39 and length wise, it stops just above my knees. ☀️The colour of fabric can sometimes be difficult to capture accurately when I’m editing to correct for skin tone. Also, the colour can change depending on device. So, I’ve taken a close up where the colour is better represented. It’s a teal and buttons are a light grey. Fabric is a cotton linen blend from @spotlightstores

An easy, happy tank dress using silk noil from @theconfidentstitch. This was my first time using silk noil and it was shockingly easy - it felt as stable as quilting cotton, but the finished garment has much more drape and movement. Pattern: @patternscout #pshanatank Mods: I made a 14, which is a size larger than the tank top versions I’ve made in the past, but I wanted the extra ease. Voici la robe Hana #pshanadress de @patternscout en satin de coton Frida trouvé chez @diffuslainetissus en janvier dernier. Les boutons ont été récupérés sur un vêtement de ma fille quand elle était petite. J'ai cousu toutes les boutonnières mais j'arrive à enfiler la robe sans l'ouvrir. Le patron prévoit des coutures anglaises (appelées french seams là-bas, va comprendre 😅) et une finition au biais. Je regrette qu'il n'y ai pas de poches mais ça peut se rajouter. Et il n'y a aucune illustration dans les explications ce qui m'a un peu manqué. Bonne journée 🙋‍♀️

It’s done! I’m completely out of sync for #sewankarafabric21 but I’m so happy to finally use Ankara Fabric. I had some lovely sewing tips from @mapalo_store where I bought my fabric. The main takeaway was that pattern matching is very important. You can see on my fabric that my pattern is not mirrored symmetrically so I’ve found a centre point for the waist and centre front and went from there. I’ve used one of my favourite dress patterns. I used the #pshanadress by @patternscout as it doesn’t distract from the fabric. The only modification was to lengthen the dress so it could fit with the fabric design. This mash-up was inspired by this lovely Japanese cotton lawn with meadow flowers. Cotton lawn is so lightweight and flowy, I was inspired to make the #msleiladress (and fit in one last summer dress before it gets cold here). The last time I made this I wanted to lift the neckline a little and Taree has a really comprehensive post about this but I’m still quite limited in drafting and understanding how to redraft a pattern is still on my “to learn” list so I decided to use one of my favourite shift dress as the bodice #pshanadress ... and so here I have my first #mashup with the sleeves and skirt from @marsha.style and the bodice from @patternscout

Now for my Hana Tank + Dress obsession... I’ve made two tie front blouses, a cropped tank and a dress. The first tied blouse is made out of @rubystarsociety citrus print rayon (designed by Melody Miller). It is so soft and easy to work with despite the fact that it’s slippery and thin. I could wear it everyday. Also the colors are vibrant and magnificent. The black shorts pictured are self drafted made out of a linen remnant. The cropped tank is made from @merchantandmills Ikat cotton. I love the texture in the weave. Both the rayon & Ikat are from @gather_here, in Cambridge. They have a huge Merchant & Mills selection! And the dress is made in @robertkaufman chambray. Studies show that the most impactful way to get people to vote is if they are encouraged personally by a friend/acquaintance. "Relational organizing" is more impactful than sending postcards, or making a call to a phone bank list, and even more impactful that having volunteers canvass door to door. That's why I've chosen to put my efforts this year into being a Ward Captain and getting people connected, block-by-block, with their fellow Democrats who can encourage each other to stay involved. (Virginia has elections every single year, and our City sometimes has elections several times a year, so we can't get complacent.) Tonight, I'm speaking to a group of local citizens about voting in this November's elections, and recruiting volunteers to be neighborhood captains to get out the vote. I will be seeing people in the flesh this evening, and I can hardly contain myself. I walked downstairs and my entire family gasped, and my middle child asked, "mom, are you going to a ball?" Honestly, it feels like I'm headed to prom -- I'm full of excitement and butterflies. I have been so very, very cautious about staying at home and avoiding social events. But this is one where I'm willing to take the risk (albeit with a mask and hand sanitizer and 6 feet of social distance). Will people know that I have a full face of make-up on? Probably not. But in 2020, wearing lipstick under your mask is the equivalent to wearing fancy underwear. I’ve been a long time wearer and appreciator of linen, wrinkles and all, for quite some time now. Somehow I’ve never sewn with it. I decided to remedy that with the Striped Rayon Linen from @surgefabricshop. While this blend is predominantly Rayon, it looks, feels and behaves more like linen. I’m a big fan of the fabric. So much so that I’ve already worn the dress 4x in the last 2 weeks. It’s extremely comfortable in this southern great and humidity. Take care to prewash & dry the fabric prior to cutting: it does shrink. I’ve since laundered the same way (wash cold, tumble dry on low) without any additional shrinkage. Pattern is the Hana from @patternscout. While it matches my typical style, the dress does nothing to compliment my otherwise straight shape. The addition of a belt helps but I may stick to the shirt views from here on out. I have no complaints with the pattern or instructions. I like the all-in-one button placket. It made for an easy and, dare I say, foolproof construction. I had so much fun doing this photo shoot today, so sorrynotsorry you’re going to be seeing a lot of this dress😂 I’m pretty sure an empty university campus is the best place for taking photos of yourself! So this is my newest double cotton gauze dress and my first project for the Mood Sewing Network! I was inspired by an ad on Facebook and took a screenshot and tried to recreate it! Swipe to see my inspo. It was a SUPER EASY hack. I took the #pshanadress by @patternscout and cut it off at the crotch and added a ruffle. I was so precise (not) that I held up the paper pattern piece to determine where to cut it off. I then used the rest of my fabric for the peplum. I got a yard and a half so i cut the remaining fabric in half so that the front and back peplum are each the width of the fabric. I tried it on before attaching the peplum and it was going to be too long, so I cut about 6 inches off the bottom of the dress before attaching the peplum. The color is true purple which is most true in the second pic. Because I’m part of the mood sewing network bloggers, I’ve been given a credit for fabric, but all opinions are my own. I really like double gauze! This is really reasonable at 7.99 a yard and after you wash it it’s almost spongy... you definitely don’t need a lining and I love the texture. I did very little pressing to avoid distorting the texture. Also, it doesn’t wrinkle!!! Me Made May Day 25 I was looking for a simple shift dress with a button placket for the Gingham Stonewashed linen from @blackbirdfabrics. As soon as I saw the bottom ruffle that @craftyprofessor added to the @patternscout Hana dress, I knew I found it! I made a size 12 with the D cup. I did a muslin to the waist and subsequently lowered the darts by about one inch. Very nice that there are cup size choices. I had a lot of trouble with the topstitching, which should have been SO simple in such a crisp woven. It kept gathering despite being at the right tension. I finally shortened the stitch length and that worked. And the buttonholes, aarrgghh! My buttonholer and machine were just not cooperating. And then I noticed the spacing is off towards the ruffle. Next time (if there is one) I think I would like a deeper ruffle, with the dress the same length. And OMG pockets! What did I not add them? Most of what I have been making is about to be unwrapped, but I did manage to finally put buttons on this #pshanadress by @patternscout. I wasn't planning on photographing it as it's a sundress and it has been...far from sunny, but my crafty bestie @putadartinit wanted to snap some of her quilts and I realized the weather was perfect for the fabric at least, so I channeled my inner 90s art teacher vibe and sallied forth. This mash-up was inspired by this lovely Japanese cotton lawn with meadow flowers. Cotton lawn is so lightweight and flowy, I was inspired to make the #msleiladress (and fit in one last summer dress before it gets cold here). The last time I made this I wanted to lift the neckline a little and Taree has a really comprehensive post about this but I’m still quite limited in drafting and understanding how to redraft a pattern is still on my “to learn” list so I decided to use one of my favourite shift dress as the bodice #pshanadress ... and so here I have my first #mashup with the sleeves and skirt from @marsha.style and the bodice from @patternscout
