Another #psbyrdiebuttonup by @patternscout this time hacked into a maternity dress for my sister. This is probably the most adventurous I got with a pattern hack so far and I think it came out looking great! I originally worked off of my sister’s measurements for the bust, then cut the pattern about 2” above the waist, added seam allowance and a channel for elastic. For the skirt, I added 2” of ease then gathered the extra width into the circumference of the new waist. After she tried it on we decided to take another inch off the top bodice so it sits just under her bust. I also shortened the sleeves to make it more of a spring/summer dress. I purchased this 6oz rayon linen from @lafinchfabrics. I love the drape and it was so easy to work with. Definitely a fan of rayon linen! #youcanhackit #psbyrdiedress #patternscoutpatterns #maternitysewinghack #maternitysewing

This Byrdie Button Up Dress has been a long time coming! I bought this Pattern Scout pattern a couple of years ago, with the intention of making a solid pink version because it reminded me of a RTW dress that I wore to death. I loved the delicate pintuck details and the simplified band collar, making this one stand out from the typical shirt dress. I bought this vibrant Irish linen (the shade is watermelon 🍉) from Rainbow Fabrics Kilburn on the recommendation from Samantha ( @purplesewingcloud ). The color is absolutely fantastic. It literally glows when the sunlight hits it. It's beautiful quality fabric and such a fun, bold color to wear. Though I bought the pattern with this dress in mind, I ended up making a shirt version first, as this pattern comes with shirt/shirt dress options, with or without the pintucks. You can do a proper shirt with full collar and sleeves/cuffs or this simple band collar. I hacked the sleeves to make them fuller/slightly gathered into short sleeve cuffs, which makes it perfect for summer. There are so many perfect details about this dress. The pintucks were very satisfying to make, and I love the subtle pintucks at the back of the neckline. There's a thread chain to secure the waist tie (though I did have to make mine quite a bit longer to fit the width of the waist tie). I finished this dress off with some delightful Pigeon Wishes buttons, which add a touch more color to this bright and cheerful dress. And because this dress comes with different bust cup sizes (hallelujah!), the fit is perfect, right out of the packet. I made a size 10C, graded to a 12 at the hip for my current HB35FB38W31H42. I did shorten it, as it was meant to be below the knee, and I think it's perfect. I'm going to be wearing this one a lot! Now I'm busy dreaming up which fabric to make it in next...

#memademay day 23: It’s my last #psbyrdiebuttonup, and I finally counted—I have made 4 Version A’s (poppy linen, chambray, snakes and beetles print challis, and this aqua linen, ALL from @stonemountainfabric), two Version B’s (white and black Swiss dot), and one version A shirt dress (double gauze). That’s a LOT of experience with this pattern, which means I’ve been able to continually experiment and adjust. Having button up shirts that fit exactly how you want them to is game-changing. Even where you place the buttons and buttonholes makes a difference! I’ve also adjusted the height of the armscye and the placement of the shoulder seam…yoke / no yoke, different sleeve styles, etc. but the base pattern is awesome. This shirt was inspired by one I had over a decade ago from J Crew…it took awhile to find the exact color I remembered, but I got it. :) #memademay2025

My first ever #memademay! I’m starting strong with fully handmade outfit: two of my earliest makes from getting back into the sewing habit three-ish years ago. When I look at both of these projects on the INSIDE, I can see the enormous progress I’ve made in professional-looking (and durable) finishes, but I’m still very satisfied that they felt polished enough for a “business casual” event today! Blouse— #psbyrdiebuttonup version B by @patternscout in black Swiss dot that I had in my stash from long ago. Those pintucks were a labor of love, but ultimately the process was quite meditative and satisfying! I wear this OFTEN. The black is definitely faded after multiple washes — dye job in its future? Possible! Pants— self-drafted from a TON of YouTube tutorials and much trial and error on fitting, gorgeous turquoise linen from one of the many tiny fabric district stores (can’t remember which). The real front waistband with elastic back is SO comfy — honestly prefer all pants this way! This was the project that got me back into this initially in 2021, inspired by a very specific wardrobe prompt for a @bivoices concert that I had despaired finding in RTW clothing. I was WILDLY proud of pulling this off. I’ve worn them enough that they need some TLC on the inside seams—these were made before I got borderline militant about French seams for linen projects. #memademay2025 #sewistsofinstagram #handmade #sewingaddict

Another new make! This is a #PSByrdieButtonUp by @patternscout in the D Cup. I used a size 16 shoulder, graded to 20 bust, graded to 22 hip. I added a back yoke as per Casey's tutorial and a hanger loop because I just like them. This time I also added a sleeve tab to keep my sleeves up and out the way. This fabric was a doona cover from the op shop which I really like the pattern of. The stripes allow for plenty of directional play, but it's kinda tricky to see because the lines are so narrow. Button up shirts are so fun and satisfying to sew.

My winter Myositis, a dress that took its time. As soon as I made my first Myositis Dress by Deer and Doe, as a collaboration with Renata @thetwilightstitcher , I had visions of making another in a lightweight corduroy. I even mentioned it in a chat with Renata, which you might remember if you saw my collaboration video back in the summer of 2022. I included this version in my autumn sewing plans and even went to the trouble of cutting it out that October. Somehow, other projects took my attention, but I finally got around to sewing it last month. It was worth the wait. I love the design of this dress. I like the mandarin collar, the darts on the front and back for shaping, the tiered gathered skirts. For a wintery, corduroy version, I knew that I would have to go for a full button front and long sleeves. It was simple to extend the button placket. The sleeves were a bit more complicated, but I used the sleeves of the Byrdie Button Up Blouse by Pattern Scout. I also mashed the two skirt variations together, for the length that I wanted. The fabric is a stretch needlecord from Sew Me Sunshine. I love this petrol blue color and found the perfect matching buttons from Liberty (the color is more accurate in the close-up photos). Somehow, in the time it took me to make this, I lost a button, so I used a different button for the sleeves. I'm really proud of the finish on this, especially the sleeve placket. The fabric was very easy to work with, though the stretch was not needed in this design. I went with my previous sizing, which was down 1 size. With this thicker fabric, it wanted to be more fitted at the waist, so I later took a total of 5 inches out of the front and back darts. I had to unpick my sewn and serged seams, had to re-gather the skirt… but it was worth it. It seems that I sewed the bottom skirt tier upside down on the back, but I didn't notice until I saw the photos. Not enough of a problem to unpick. The pockets need to be deeper, though. That will be rectified. On the whole, I am really happy with the fit and shape. It's a fabulous winter dress!

A recent make, only photographed because 2/3 of my kids were off having lots of fun with some good friends. This is a #PSByrdieButtonUp by @patternscout in a rayon from spotlight, made for #DarwinFrocktails last month. As with my last Byrdie, it is a size 16 shoulder, graded to a size 20D cup at the bust, and graded to a size 22 at the hip. I removed about 3" of length from the dress, and folded the hem up twice at 1". I added the pintucks from view B at the back, which I like the detail of. Sewing time these days (now 7 weeks post partum) is quite precious, so I embraced a 'perfectly imperfect' stance on this make, right the way down to buttons that meet the same basic criteria (4 holes, bevelled edge, passable as black) but are by no means a matching set. I lost a bit of love for this dress after I made it, so this is only my second wear. After today, I've fallen a bit in love with it again. I'd love a sky blue belt or sandals to wear with this dress to make it a bit more summery, I think. Shout out to my very wise SIL @tessa_aitch who suggested making a known pattern for Frocktails rather than trying to be too ambitious with my two week lead in, and to Michelle @sweetlittlepeanut_boutique and friends for being the best table mates/Nannas at Frocktails, for great conversation and for snuggling my sleeping babe so I could chat sewing all night long!

This year may finally be the year where I make more seperates than dresses. This Byrdie Button-up is made with a beautiful lightweight eyelet. To avoid having raw or serged edges pocking out through the holes, I did french seams wherever possible, and instead of interfacing, I doubled up the pieces and interlined them, making sure that the holes weren't in the same spot on both pieces (that would have made buttons and buttonholes tricky). I had a tough time with fitting this blouse. It originally turned out too big, and then, after adjusting, too small. I was able to let out the bust by about .5", so it is still too tight, but better than it was. I have a list of adjustments I'll make for my next version, but this one still works. Been sewing regularly, but just felt like sharing this new #psbyrdiebuttonup by @patternscout. I wanted a classic, fitted button up and this pattern almost got me there! I chose a size too small (my own fault) and I think if I follow the size chart faithfully, I will have a really wonderful, classic shirt next time. I do appreciate the thorough instructions and cup options available with this pattern! Once I nail the fit on this version, I want to try the pleated view.

I thought I was over the flu but apparently not 😞 Another pajama day for me so using another spring break pic to keep up with posting my makes from this year for #memademay2025 Wearing a @patternscout #psbyrdiebuttonup made in white linen from @fabricsstorecom. This was the perfect hot weather layer, especially for all the hiking we did on our trip. I made one size up from my measurements for more wearing ease but it’s not an oversized pattern. Fit notes for my PJ top... This is (mostly) a @patternscout #psbyrdiebuttonup As per my last one, I used the D cup range, and traced a size 16 shoulder, 20 bust and 22 hip. I also lowered the bust dart by an inch. Instead of using the collar and collar stand pieces, I overlayed my only camp collar shirt over top and traced that out instead. I used the #sydnishirtdress collar by @sewtogrow and chose a size 4XL because it is the biggest size and I wanted the space! I decided to round off the corners of the collar for a softer look (I used the bottom of my son's cup, so nothing too scientific or precise there). I lengthened and reshaped the Sydni shirt dress front facing so it could button up and meet up with the hem of the Byrdie. I decided not to use interfacing on my main collar pieces, because I didn't want stiff fabric in my face as I sleep. I just used it on the button placket. Let's see if I regret that decision... I forgot about allowing for the pleats at the back of my Byrdie, so the back is just one flat piece, but it doesn't seem to affect the range of movement which I'm pleased about. I added piping, which I made with bias binding and some cord from old Venetian blinds. It was actually perfect 😂 Of course I added cuffs to my sleeves and pocket so I could make the most of piping. This was my second time piping, but my first with a piping foot. I found it really easy to make and apply, switching between my piping foot, regular foot, and zipper foot. My buttons were clear ones from my stash, but I painted the back with a glittery silver nail polish. I don't know how it will hold up, but I like the look for now! I embroidered my initials on my pocket using my computer as a light board to trace a pic I found online, and my zig zag stitch. It took forever but I don't regret it 😂 I also remembered to put on some @kylieandthemachine labels, which are fun but basically impossible to photograph today for some reason! The main fabric was gifted by my sister in law via @sewinggem and the fabric I used for piping was purchased at @wearethefabricstore both are linen 🤤

Here is my last make before baby arrived earlier this month. It is @patternscout #PSByrdieButtonUp in the D Cup. I used a size 16 shoulder, graded to 20D bust, graded to 22D hip. I added 5" in length to the bottom to cover my belly, and am still deciding what length I want it now post partum. I also added a yoke, as per Casey's tutorial online, and a hanger loop because I just like them. Fabric is all from stash, including some double lilac double gauze, a pink check table cloth from the op shop, my father in law's old business shirt, and mums old sheet. A patch worked wearable toile. I have fabric for two more Byrdies (purchased more than 12 months ago now! 😬), and will slowly make my way towards another one over the next couple of weeks. Also, shout out to my (heavily modified) Ultimate Sports Bras I made a couple of months ago- I've been wearing them day and night since baby was born. It is unseen in this pic, but the unspoken hero never the less.

I have made the #psbyrdiebuttonup in a white linen. I made a straight size 8 in C cup, and the fit is great! I didn't even add length as the drafting is for a person of 5'9" which is me 😊 I will add 2 cms on the sleeves for next time though, as I prefer them just a tad longer. I really like this pattern, a classic shirt and very easy to sew. The pattern is great for #sewingwithprojectors as the file is layered. I did unfold the pieces in Photoshop for easier cutting of the fabric.

Well I’m only 7 months late for #sewrecreatethelook23 (or a few months early for the next #sewrecreatethelook ) with my new set of #memadeclothes . When I was in London for the knitting and stitching show I stopped by @libertyfabrics and picked up this gorgeous blurred floral cotton lawn. I wasn’t sure what to do with it when low and behold I went to Harrod’s and saw a Dior mannequin with a blurred floral skirt (last slide). I figured it was a sign from a higher power so I copied the look. Do you guys have any tips on finding clothes to recreate? I’ve tried Pinterest but never seem to find anything interesting 😫 Anyways to recreate the look I made a classic button-up with the #psbyrdiebuttonup pattern in a white cotton poplin from @blackbirdfabrics I picked up a while ago and the cutest vintage buttons from @ritasgalanterie . For the skirt I used my #persephonepants waistband as a guide (I previously hacked it to be curved) since I finally got it to fit so well. I added just gathered rectangles and the #claradresspattern pockets from @silversaga.se (because they’re the biggest pockets I’ve seen) and boom, a skirt was born. I worked on this shirt with my sewing friend @diana.irion and we even made a video review on her YouTube channel Wandering Sewist so go check it out for more of my thoughts! #blackbirdfabrics #handmadenovember #handmadenovember2023 #hmn2023 #memadewardrobe #memadeeveryday #isewmyownclothes #imakemyownclothes #libertyfabric #libertylondon #sewistsofinstagram #sewersofinstagram #patternscout #bfcotton #millennialsewing #wearitonwednesday

This Barbie sews her own workwear 💕 When @lisetailor reached out to ask if I would be interested to collaborate on some makes with them, I was honestly a bit intimidated. Their fabrics are on the higher end of what I usually spend - am I worth three projects of theirs? Am I….Kenough? The answer is what I make it. I worked really bloody hard deciding what to make with this beautiful viscose and ensure I didn’t “waste” it - but of course then realised the whole idea is to be honest about my experience with their fabric, because thank goodness I have amazing followers who support my little corner of the internet and know they can rely on me for a frank review! SO onto the fabric. I would say it’s more of a viscose lawn than challis and has a structure perfect for autumn blouses, dresses or even skirts (though I’d line a bias or a-line skirt) It was also lovely to sew - I recommend a micro Tex needle to avoid stitches running. My only complaint is how pale the fabric is on the reverse, but when you have a fabric designed and printed in France on a sustainable scale….c’est la vie! I also used their matching buttons which are of course parfait for this fabric and so sweet. I love the swish and look of this #psbyrdiebuttonup and know it will be a great addition to the work wardrobe! Thank you @lisetailor and congratulations on the new collection!! #lisetailor #lisetailorfabric #memade #jecouds #fabric #gifted #ad #thanksimadeit #diyfashion #sewingworkwear #memadeeveryday #memadewardrobe

More straight lines and tucks! Near the beginning of my sewing journey a couple of years ago, I discovered my mind needs straight lines, everything has its place and must stay in place - hence tucks and pleats. Yes, totally boring - I know I really need to let go, do some gathers, be creative.... Anyway, this is the Pattern Scout Byrdie shirtdress, the first of many. After inserting the long sleeves, I suddenly thought they might be too hot in Singapore, so I just hacked them off and added tabs. I like to hide my granny knees but it was my first attempt at sewing a dress and I didn't realise that a few cm would need to be used for the hem! The material is from Atelier Brunette and the buttons are from them too. @patternscout @atelierbrunette #patternscoutpatterns #psbyrdiebuttonup #patternscoutbyrdie #atelierbrunettefabric #atelierbrunettebuttons #sewover50 #isewmyownclothes

Is three @patternscout #psbyrdiebuttonup too many? Not at all. Scroll through to see the white, the plaid and the print version of this go everywhere shirt. Mods include lengthening the sleeves and the torso. The first two were also shortened below the waist a bit. I made the first in May and the other two in June. The funny thing is I bought the pattern to make the tucked version of the shirt and I have not yet done so. #sewover50 #iwearwhatisew #patternscoutpatterns

New YouTube video, link in bio! . Yep, I started a YouTube channel! Something I've been thinking about for too long, and procrastinating on a little longer, which is why I'm launching this in the fall with a linen summery dress 🙃. But I played around with the styling a little and I think it works! . I've always enjoyed teaching and I love to sew (in case it wasn't obvious), so I'm hoping this will be a new way to share both in addition to hanging out here and on my blog (I'm all about variety, folks!). . For todays #wearitonwednesday the prompt is secret pyjamas. It was freezing this morning, so it has to be an outfit I could wear my thermals underneath, but also had to be semi smart for work. This is my #psbyrdiebuttonup shirt dress by @patternscout it is the softest bushed cotton fabric and it feels like a hug when you are wearing it 🤗

Me made May Day 6 - feeling a wee bit better - yay 🙌 Off out for a few hours today - given the cold to Mr R but he says he’s ok. Did my awful grey roots first thing! I’ve a hair colour booked in 2 weeks but I couldn’t wait any longer 😬 I have 3 @stylearc Genoa bias cut skirts - this is the one I’ve worn the most over the winter and I want to style it for spring. My @patternscout Byrdie button up goes with everything so I’m starting there! I changed the knotted front to a tuck after the photo. I’m definitely craving more colour in my wardrobe. Time to whip up some bright things 💖 Music today takes me back to good times in my early 20s. We joked we’d have this as our first dance song at our wedding. And I have some hysterical drunken dancing videos with the lovely @jorichrose when our girls were very little 😆 Great memories every time I hear it 🎵 #MeMadeMay24 #MMM24 #MeMadeMay #BathSews #BristolSews #MidSizeSewing #SewOver40 #SewOver50 #ChronicallySewn #MeMadeEveryday #SewistsOfInstagram #sagenoabiascutskirt #sagenoaskirt #psbyrdiebuttonup

Oh hi, it’s been a minute since I’ve shown my face on here. How’s everyone holding up out there? The MVP of my winter wardrobe is this pair of @daughterjudypatterns Worship jeans, my fourth pair that I made last December. The choice of denim can make or break a great pair of jeans, and I finally hit the jackpot with these. I used a deadstock denim that I got at Mill End in Portland last year, and it’s broken in so beautifully. I wear these jeans practically every day, they are SUPER comfy. This pattern is officially my favorite jeans pattern now, easily knocking my Helene jeans out of the number 1 spot. What makes these Worships so comfortable: 🐎Chelsea’s thoughtful drafting gives us a little more room in the saddle compared to similar close-fitting jeans patterns (I’m looking at you, Dawn jeans). I’m convinced this is one reason why these jeans feel like a classic pair of Levi’s that you want to wear forever. 👖Super soft 11 oz denim. It’s a little lightweight for jeans but that means they’ve relaxed quickly. The wrong side is brushed so they feel like flannel inside. ✂️Getting the vertical rise height just right. For me the sweet spot is adding 3/4” for my height. If I don’t have enough rise, it’s an instant wedgie 😩, so this is one of the fitting variables I pay close attention to. 🧵I wanted a more relaxed fit for these than my previous 2 pairs, so I added 1/8” along each side seam (front and back) for a total of 1/2” additional ease in the circumference from waist to hem. ~~~~~~~~ Outfit deets: Wearing my Worships with a vintage-inspired top that I made last weekend while we had a few days of glorious sunshine. It started out as a @patternscout Byrdie button up that I hacked to add a yoke and little gathered sleeve. This dreamy rainbow plaid is from @fabricksfabrics and I’m in love. 🏷️🏷️🏷️ #worshipjeans #daughterjudypatterns #psbyrdiebuttonup

I started this shirt for #sewaprilblouse23 but never got it finished in time. It is the @patternscout Byrdie shirt, which is a classic shirt pattern that can also be made into a shirt dress. The fabric is a white linen from @exeterfabriccentre who I discovered on a trip to visit my daughter at Uni, what a treasure trove of a shop, highly recommend a visit if you are near Exmouth. I chose to embroider my pockets, I kind of made up the stitches, with what fitted the flower design, so may not fall into traditional embroidery stitches, but I am really happy with the result. A white linen shirt is a wardrobe staple that I have been missing.

Me Made May Day 27 A crumpled and soggy Tuesday in Somerset! Almost didn’t post as I found it hard to find anything in my me made wardrobe that fitted and had sleeves! These 2 old makes are my @patternscout Byrdie button up shirt and the @chalkandnotch Max tee. Both very much loved pieces that need to be sewn again. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve worn my chambray shirt! Today I’m attempting to do a bit of sewing after resting my arm for a week. Probably a bad idea but I feel like I’m going mad not sewing! #memademay day 4 — messy hair+no makeup+soft pants+classic button-up shirt that I wear to pieces. I told you I loved the #psbyrdiebuttonup pattern from @patternscout . . . I think this may have been the 5th(??) one I made? This is version A (no pintucks), and I did her modifications to add a yoke to the back and do the “grown on” placket front (IYKYK). Finished the interior with all French seams, including the armscye, which makes it feel SUPER clean and professional and durable (even when it’s wrinkly, which it currently is). Classic soft chambray from @stonemountainfabric, buttons from @PacificTrimming in the Garment District, which I visit at least monthly. Bonus shot of some swatches I’m about to add to my new swatch library. I have (::cough::) a lot of fabric now. #sewists #memademay2025 #sewingaddict

I have been working on this #psbyrdiebuttonup for three weeks and I just tried it on to confirm that my buttonhole placement would work. And the shirt is absolutely terrible and not wearable. I did the pleated version with the stand collar in this yummy #riflepaperco viscose. But even though the pattern recommends viscose, it’s too shifty and not stable enough for this shirt. One side is somehow considerably longer than the other, which may have been due to overhandling of the fabric but I don’t really know. The pleated front also doesn’t suit me. The fabric is puffy over my abdomen and reminds me of maternity clothes. I won’t even be bothering to sew the buttons on at this point because I’m so terribly disappointed in this shirt. I’ll try again with the non-pleated version, in a nice cotton. But never again in viscose. I just want to move on from this disappointment. I’ll probably put it in the giveaway at the upcoming #instagramsewistspicnicyvr because who knows, maybe someone else will love it?

First make of 2024! The 90’s girl in me has been craving some comfy flannel button ups. I’ve had the Byrdie Button Up pattern for a few years and thought I’d finally give it a go. I really like it and think it would be gorgeous in a rayon challis as well. I believe Pattern Scout drafts for 5’9” and since I’m only 5’4” I did a muslin and made a few adjustments. I shortened the bodice by an inch and the sleeves by half an inch. I raised the bust darts by half an inch and it made a huge difference in the fit. I made the size 8. I will definitely make the shirt dress version next! I made a size 14, D cup, in case anyone wants to know. #VancouverSews #IndiePatterns #MakersGonnaMake #Sewing #Sewist #SewOver40 #SewYourStash #HandmadeWardrobe #IMakeMyOwnClothes #MeMade #MeMadeEveryday #DIYWardrobe #Handmade #Sewcialist #SelfSewnWardrobe #SlowFashion #SewYourOwn #SewBusty #smallbandlargecup #OkToShare
