My first attempt of the Ava Dress by @patternscout made earlier in the year. Definitely some mods needed in the bust area but a good starting point. Pretty happy with my vertical pattern matching. #memadeeveryday Back in my sewing room! Doing a really exciting pattern test. Exciting because it’s their inaugural pattern release! Can’t wait to share. I’ve been wearing my Pattern Scout Ava Dress quite a lot this summer. This was the first ever pattern test that I did. I was so nervous about signing up for the test and when I heard I got in, that was even scarier! But it was the best experience and so glad I decided to jump out of my comfort zone. It was interesting to communicate with people of all sewing levels with their contributions and knowledge. If you’ve always wanted to try, don’t hesitate. It’s such a supportive experience. Sewing community is the best! I only used the sleeve (really it’s just extending the original sleeve line and eliminating the sleeve facing) from Vogue 9253. The neckline, bodice, etc are still the Ava dress. Hung out in Palm Springs ☀️🕶️🏝️ for a few days and my Pattern Scout Ava Dress with kimono sleeves from Vogue 9253 was just perfect for the weather! ⛱️This is such a great pattern; only 2.5 yards for a maxi is pretty awesome. I wanted a caftan vibe, but didn’t want to be overwhelmed with a ton of fabric; this dress fits the bill. 🍋I’ve had this beautiful cotton marinating in my stash. I bought it from Super Textiles when they were a store front (they have a pretty great online presence via Etsy FYI) and I’m pretty sure Steve (the owner) said it was from Italy. CASHMERETTE CATSKILLS JACKET I really love how this jacket turned out. It’s really great for throwing over a dress or top. I don’t tolerate the cold very well, including the aircon turned up to the max in summer! I’ve been looking specifically for something to wear over dresses. This is the bias cut #catskillsjacket from #cashmeretteclub and was inspired by Claire McCardell, fashion designer from the 1940s. This fabric is so special. It was a lovely gift. I’m not too sure what it is but it’s very soft and slippery. It could be silk satin. It had been in someone’s sewing stash for 30 years. There was some slight damage to parts of the fabric and it was very narrow at 90cm width so it was impossible to pattern match. In the end, I’m so grateful that I could turn it into this lovely jacket and I can’t wait to show her. I haven’t attached any closures yet. I am really indecisive when it comes to details. I had some red frog closures but decided the red was too much for the fabric. I got to go to a fancy birthday party over the weekend so I sewed myself a new dress to wear. I love how it turned out. I actually made two but this was the one that got hemmed and finished. New dress! I hacked the @patternscout Ava Dress again. Same ruffle sleeve addition as my previous dress, but this time I added a gathered 3-tiered skirt with a 3/8” elastic waist. The fabric is a lightweight poly crepe from @lafinchfabrics_new (from last year) with a really nice soft feel and almost seersucker-like texture. This recently made linen blend dress came in clutch for wearing in the Georgia heat yesterday during day two of the @topstitchatl Sewing Getaway. This is the second @patternscout pattern I've made and the block seems to fit me really well. I could probably do with shortening the waist of this by about an 1" (Pattern Scout drafts for 5' 9", which I am not) but otherwise this has been amazing to wear around. We went sofa shopping a couple weeks ago and I crawled all around wearing this and it was still great to wear. This gorgeous length of silk/linen my heart skipped a beat! It’s truly one of the most magnificent scene print fabrics I’d ever seen.    It’s called Impressions “Lakeside” and that’s exactly what I see when I look at it.       I needed a pattern that would not only showcase it’s beautiful floral print but also one that would enhance its almost “oil painting” aesthetic. I wanted a straight skirt so that the print would remain unbroken.       I knew that the @patternscout #avadress would fit the bill but I could also imagine a flutter sleeve because I felt it would give it a delicate edge as well.    I used a flutter sleeve from the @cashmerette #uptondress expansion pack which I managed to fit with a little bit of adjusting the shoulder seams on the Ava.       I made a size 16 with a C cup ( how good are cup sizes in indie patterns) and self drafted a belt to finish it off!       Casey from @patternscout also has a brilliant sewalong for this pattern over on her website!       I hope you like it as much as I do!       #sew #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #sewover50 #lovetosew #fabric #isew #sewing #dressmaking #dahliasewciety #psavadress #clothedit #fabric #silk #linen #isew #instasew #dahliasewciety

My favourite make of the summer…i’d had my eye on this nani iro fabric from @guthrieghani for some time & when the @patternscout Ava dress was released i knew it would be the perfect pattern to play around with the border print. The Ava is a lesson in sewing techniques…french seams, flat felled seams, ‘lined’ facings. This version is lined with a navy cotton voile & i made use of the cross grain to mix up the bodice pieces to emphasise the border print. Celebrating my lovely sister-in-law’s @suecruse birthday in the sunshine 🎉🌞 . Heatwave ☀️☀️☀️ No, I'm not in the Mediterranean. This blue wall is opposite my husband's work, and I snuck in a quick selfie in between loading up our car for a conference tomorrow. It’s been great for my sewing to reflect on my many mistakes after a sew 😂 Actually, I’m happy to share that those mistakes are more minor these days and I have a bit more problem solving abilities now. For instance, this fabric was very thick and bouncy so I had to finish the seams differently and did a fair bit of hand sewing too! I am finishing off two ridiculously seasonally inappropriate projects that have been patiently waiting for attention. First is another #psavadress - it may not look much on the hanger but it’s a great little Summer dress, trust me! The Ikat fabric is a beautiful dark blue, and I got it from @lushcloth. I may have to wait a while to wear it, but when that sun comes back, I will be ready for it!!! Second, just awaiting buttons and hemmed legs is another #robertscollection jumpsuit. The linen is from @sewmesunshine.uk bought with my Sewing Weekender discount in 2021 (see, I said it had been waiting!) Once these are finished, I have some secret Christmas sewing to do, but first I’m going to put the kettle on. Let’s talk a little about Pattern Scout shall we? Casey has wonderful patterns that are well drafted, true to size, well written and thought out. Her instructions alone are worth purchasing her patterns. This is the Ava Dress which I also got the honor of testing for her. It comes in 2 lengths and this is the maxi length (obvs). This was my very wearable toile and I didn’t have to make any corrections (like lowering the bust dart thank you). This is for wovens but I’m sure it would work well for stable knits. Also, if you are tall she drafts for 5’9” so I didn’t have to make any adjustments for height. Woot! This is a dress I made a couple of years ago, but before I could wear it this year I had to make some alterations. This was initially a @patternscout #psavadress. My hacks include giving it an a-line skirt, a ruffle, and gathering it a bit at the front waist. The fabrics: at least one was from @stonemountainfabric. Not sure about the other one. I clearly did not have enough of either to make a dress, so I patch worked these fabrics together. It’s a bit jarring, but I love it. My first attempt of the Ava Dress by @patternscout made earlier in the year. Definitely some mods needed in the bust area but a good starting point. Pretty happy with my vertical pattern matching. CASHMERETTE CATSKILLS JACKET I really love how this jacket turned out. It’s really great for throwing over a dress or top. I don’t tolerate the cold very well, including the aircon turned up to the max in summer! I’ve been looking specifically for something to wear over dresses. This is the bias cut #catskillsjacket from #cashmeretteclub and was inspired by Claire McCardell, fashion designer from the 1940s. This fabric is so special. It was a lovely gift. I’m not too sure what it is but it’s very soft and slippery. It could be silk satin. It had been in someone’s sewing stash for 30 years. There was some slight damage to parts of the fabric and it was very narrow at 90cm width so it was impossible to pattern match. In the end, I’m so grateful that I could turn it into this lovely jacket and I can’t wait to show her. I haven’t attached any closures yet. I am really indecisive when it comes to details. I had some red frog closures but decided the red was too much for the fabric. #memadeeveryday Back in my sewing room! Doing a really exciting pattern test. Exciting because it’s their inaugural pattern release! Can’t wait to share. I’ve been wearing my Pattern Scout Ava Dress quite a lot this summer. This was the first ever pattern test that I did. I was so nervous about signing up for the test and when I heard I got in, that was even scarier! But it was the best experience and so glad I decided to jump out of my comfort zone. It was interesting to communicate with people of all sewing levels with their contributions and knowledge. If you’ve always wanted to try, don’t hesitate. It’s such a supportive experience. Some real life, non-prettified photos of my wearable muslin Ava dress by @patternscout #psavadress I made a C cup size 12 graded out to a 16 at the waist and I think I could have made it a size 10 to 14 quite honestly and be happier with the fit, so that's what I'll do next time. I will also reduce the width of the shoulders by 1/2" as I have slim shoulders. I also shortened the bodice by 1" as I have a short body, and the elastic casing sits right where it should! I took the optional step of sewing down the wrap neckline so it doesn't gape which is just right for me. The fabric was from the @ujamaayyc sale two weeks ago and I believe it's 100% polyester, but it's a very usable light to medium weight. This recently made linen blend dress came in clutch for wearing in the Georgia heat yesterday during day two of the @topstitchatl Sewing Getaway. This is the second @patternscout pattern I've made and the block seems to fit me really well. I could probably do with shortening the waist of this by about an 1" (Pattern Scout drafts for 5' 9", which I am not) but otherwise this has been amazing to wear around. We went sofa shopping a couple weeks ago and I crawled all around wearing this and it was still great to wear. This gorgeous length of silk/linen my heart skipped a beat! It’s truly one of the most magnificent scene print fabrics I’d ever seen.    It’s called Impressions “Lakeside” and that’s exactly what I see when I look at it.       I needed a pattern that would not only showcase it’s beautiful floral print but also one that would enhance its almost “oil painting” aesthetic. Hung out in Palm Springs ☀️🕶️🏝️ for a few days and my Pattern Scout Ava Dress with kimono sleeves from Vogue 9253 was just perfect for the weather! ⛱️This is such a great pattern; only 2.5 yards for a maxi is pretty awesome. I wanted a caftan vibe, but didn’t want to be overwhelmed with a ton of fabric; this dress fits the bill. 🍋I’ve had this beautiful cotton marinating in my stash. I bought it from Super Textiles when they were a store front (they have a pretty great online presence via Etsy FYI) and I’m pretty sure Steve (the owner) said it was from Italy. Heading to a wedding! I got my hair done and put on make up and everything. This is the dress I was scrambling to create earlier this week. The bodice is based on the @patternscout #psavadress. I hacked the skirt into a flared A-line and I sewed a crinoline and attached it to the dress at the waistline. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. My family is wearing blue, green, and purple ties so I will coordinate with all three of them 👗 👔

I got to go to a fancy birthday party over the weekend so I sewed myself a new dress to wear. I love how it turned out. I actually made two but this was the one that got hemmed and finished. New dress! I hacked the @patternscout Ava Dress again. Same ruffle sleeve addition as my previous dress, but this time I added a gathered 3-tiered skirt with a 3/8” elastic waist. The fabric is a lightweight poly crepe from @lafinchfabrics_new (from last year) with a really nice soft feel and almost seersucker-like texture.
