Me Made May Day 10 One (3!) of my proudest makes from our wedding. I made waistcoats for Chris, my Dad and my Brother using the @threadtheorydesigns #belvederewaistcoat pattern. The fabrics on the back all reflect the person: Chris’s waves for sailing, Dad’s fish for fishing, Paul’s trees and outdoors for adventuring! I used a beautiful piece of Harris Tweed for Chris, and suiting fabric for the other two. There were a lot of toiles made to get the fit just right! #memademay #memademay2025

Details ⬇️ Pattern: #belvederewaistcoat by @threadtheorydesigns Fabric: Blue denim and paisley patterned lining from @world_of_fabrics in Cheltenham. Label: Hand made using some ribbon from my stash Sizing and Adjustments✂️ His body measurements gave: XXL I started with this but ended up adding 2 inches to the length and about 1 inch of width to the front bodice. After sewing up, though, I had to take some excess length back out of the front neckline and a little off the side seams as it was a bit big. I used the blog post add-on to add the belt at the back and added false welt pockets on the front. It fits perfectly. I made so many tiny adjustments on this waistcoat so that it would sit just right. I'm so proud of it. Understitched by hand to give the outside a clean finish, it's simplicity and clean lines give me all the feels. Fabric is a dark blue cotton gabardine from @atelierbrunette lined in @libertyfabrics Tana Lawn. Pattern is #belvederewaistcoat from @threadtheorydesigns

I didn't make any coats this year in the end, but I made something even more special - the waistcoat my brother wore to get married. My brother is a very tall man. While he managed to find a suit that was just (with alterations) long enough for him, the matching waistcoat was way too short. So, at Easter he asked me to make him one. I've made him waistcoats in the past for school, improv shows and theatre work, but I knew this one needed to be extra special. There was a mood board of design and colour options. I scoured every fabric website I knew of for months trying to find the right light blue wool for the front of the waistcoat. I struggled. Eventually, I found the perfect fabric in a dead stock fabric shop in Belgium. I think the shipping cost as much as the fabric. The lining took about 10 samples to choose the right colour. We went through 2 toiles with so many alterations I completely redrafted the facing and lining. I think I added about 8cm to the length, changed the overlap of the front, moved the buttonholes, altered the darts and took excess out of the back armhole. Then I made a full mock-up to check the fit and the construction method (the navy tweed version) It was a huge success, fit perfectly and looked great on my brother. I took a deep breath and cut out the real version. It was my first time working with a double faced wool, I fully interfaced it with a woven interfacing which gave a lovely structure, but it was still very thick to work with. However, it came together, it worked, it fit, and it looked amazing! The wedding was beautiful, a truly special day, and I was so honoured to have been a little part of it. Belvedere Waistcoat with shoulder, length and dart adjustments. Wearable muslin for my husband and to test the construction. Very much a "trust the process" situation as I've never made a garment in this way before. It is a total game changer. The final iteration will have a chest pocket, full under stitching and proper stabilisation etc but this was more to test the unusual (for me) construction process. I still need to add buttons and do some last finishing details but overall, it's a really great pattern. This is made with leftover fabric from my #justmyluckjeans and some random mystery orange tartan lining from my stash. The pattern is #belvederewaistcoat from @threadtheorydesigns

Matchy matchy with my sweet love!! Kilian picked out the @fableism fabric for our 2yr anniversary outfits, worn to the Hozier concert :,) I made a @_fortiv_ #tuliptop with green ribbon ties. I made it in size M no mods, and it fits great! I think the ties really allow for comfort and movement. I hadn’t thought of myself as someone who would enjoy a corset inspired top (although historical corsets are not the villains they’re made out to be in Bridgerton— tight lacing really wasn’t a thing. Corsets are structural in nature, they served a purpose in distributing the weight of the skirts around the hips instead of shoulders. Can u imagine hanging the weight of a crinoline and several skirts from your shoulders??? Ffs if today’s bras didn’t cause enough back pain😵), but this makes me feel sooooo cute. I used a thrifted canvas for the lining to give it some structure. The top stitching was really fun, and I learned that if I increased the stitch length then the stitches would come out more even around the turns. Kilian’s vest is the @threadtheorydesigns #belvederewaistcoat in view 2. Apparently that is the less tailored of the two views, which I chose because of my time crunch, but I still think it came out nearly perfect for him. I could have lengthened it a touch, but overall I am happy with it. I’m particularly proud of the pattern matching!! One of the most fun aspects of the wedding was the ‘Asoebi’. It’s a West African tradition and all guests are invited to participate by incorporating a fabric the couple have chosen into something to wear for the evening celebration. As you can see in this photo of some of our extended family, the beautiful fabric they chose worked perfectly for the setting and the weather. . I managed to incorporate the linen fabric I used for a previous dress as the lining and back. The idea of the Asoebi is to demonstrate a sense of unity, community, sharing and celebration in a very visual way. Lost my sewjo there for a bit but it’s back! My first ever male garment and I LOVE it. I’m so proud, it looks like a bought waistcoat AND it fits Petes tricky body shape. It’s the @threadtheorydesigns #belvederewaistcoat with a fitting change to the front and lengthened by 2”. Plain navy front from @franklins_salisbury Gorgeous liberty tana lawn and navy silky fabric lining from where else but @guthrieghani - always relied on to have the loveliest choices of fabric.

I can finally post some projects! Everything I've worked on this year so far was for my wedding and honeymoon, so I was waiting to get good pictures. First up: the Haunted Mansion dress and vest. Project Notes: The dress pattern is the September Dress from @gunnardeatherage. I love the detail on the sleeve cuff, and it has pockets! I had to make a small bust adjustment to the bodice, which was tricky with the double darts. This was my first time making a double circle skirt, and it was the longest, most tedious hem I've ever sewn. But the result is so beautiful, and it's the twirliest thing I own. The vest is the Belvedere Waistcoat from @threadtheorydesigns. This was so much fun to make, I love waistcoats now. They're a great way to use up scrap fabric. The only modification was that I added 3" in length to match the length of other vests that Austin likes the fit of. Both the dress and vest are made with a Haunted Mansion wallpaper print cotton from TrimsandBeads on Etsy and a black satin from Joann Fabrics. I also made matching fabic covered buttons for both. It’s been a minute but it feels good to have my hands on fabric again. The @threadtheorydesigns #belvederewaistcoat version one for my beloved ❤️ Sewn in cotton indigo dyed hand coarse weave & rayon/silk from @raystitch and luscious Italian merino plaid from @habermanfabrics #theflanneltomato 🍅

I finished my set! 🧵: #closetcoremitchell sz 10; shortened rise 3/4” and length several inches; 3/8” sa at side seams #belvederewaistcoat xs shortened at chest and waist and arms scooped in a bit, so I can wear it as a top. 🪡: Main fabric is a stash relic I think I bought at Joann fabrics 6+ years ago. Facings are smooth reverse side of the main fabric. It’s definitely not natural fiber but was fairly easy to work with, except the welts were a bit tricky. I threw it in the wash and dryer before I started and it came out unscathed. I used a remnant of tencel twill for the lining bc I liked the color and it was a pain bc it kept shifting and growing and I had to keep trimming the edges when I was working with it! Trim on vest and pants guts is a liberty scrap. The vest earned it’s tag when I sewed the piping to the wrong side of the facing and had to rip it all out. I’d love to find a nice lightweight wool suiting for a second go. Note to future self: Consider interfacing the fly shield.

I bought the paper pattern earlier this year in a visit to the mighty mighty @fabworksmillshop; the main fabric is also from there (denim-look wool-cotton mix in a flannel finish, feels *lovely* to the touch). The lining is Liberty lawn, bought as a remnant a few years ago and saved to use in nice things (I lined a jacket that I wear quite frequently). It has dinosaurs! This waistcoat is for R rather than me (I already have three other waistcoats, am getting to be a connoisseur).

The Waistcoat - Fleece to Garment in a Year (10 months!) I received a beautiful mohair fleece from Colleen at Giant Cricket Farm, who raises colored Angora goats, during Rhinebeck 2023. It was from her Angora goat Marla and it was a beautiful tan color. I decided that I would make a garment from this fleece in a year, with the goal to have it done by Rhinebeck 2024. The fleece was 3 lbs, 10 ounces. I washed the fleece (Oct 25th), combed it (Nov 11-Jan 11, 2024), spun and plyed into a 2 ply (Jan 24-Apr 22) and wove it (May 4-Jun 6) The pattern was Belvedere Waistcoat from Thread Theory. This was the third garment I've ever made. I sewed the buttonholes according to @vincentbriggs1780 tutorial although I only did one with bar tacks and liked the look without them more. Changes I made using the mohair compared to regular fabric: I put two rows of stitching around the outside of the pattern pieces, one straight line along the sewing line and one line of zigzags in the seam allowance. I handstitched the darts down on the main fabric because they refused to press down, didn’t cut them in case they freyed, added a little patch of canvas at the top of the darts to even out the top and keep it from puckering weirdly, padstitching all of the interfacing canvas to the mohair and around the edges to keep it all together, much larger pattern pieces than the pattern called for to help keep the fabric from unraveling. Also as I assembled each piece of the front, I would stop and double check all the pieces were well connected and handsewed things as needed. I finished sewing the waistcoat August 13th, 2024, two months early of my goal. It was really fun! I would make some minor changes to it, mostly bringing in the side seams so it reduces the wrinkling but overall I'm very happy with it and have worn it to two weddings. #belvederewaistcoat #fleecetogarment #fleece #sewing #garmentsewing #mohair #fiberprocessing #handspunyarn #handspinning #handspun

I finished my set! 🧵: #closetcoremitchell sz 10; shortened rise 3/4” and length several inches; 3/8” sa at side seams #belvederewaistcoat xs shortened at chest and waist and arms scooped in a bit, so I can wear it as a top. 🪡: Main fabric is a stash relic I think I bought at Joann fabrics 6+ years ago. Facings are smooth reverse side of the main fabric. It’s definitely not natural fiber but was fairly easy to work with, except the welts were a bit tricky. I threw it in the wash and dryer before I started and it came out unscathed. I used a remnant of tencel twill for the lining bc I liked the color and it was a pain bc it kept shifting and growing and I had to keep trimming the edges when I was working with it! Trim on vest and pants guts is a liberty scrap. The vest earned it’s tag when I sewed the piping to the wrong side of the facing and had to rip it all out. I’d love to find a nice lightweight wool suiting for a second go. Note to future self: Consider interfacing the fly shield.

100% upcycled waistcoat completed! Made with found cotton duck canvas for the exterior, abandoned polyester slacks found in the locker room at work for the lining, inherited thread from grandma’s stash, and buttons lifted from a military surplus garment. Construction was overall very easy, but the welt pockets presented a humbling learning experience! Chest measurement: 39 inches. Belvedere Waistcoat with shoulder, length and dart adjustments. Wearable muslin for my husband and to test the construction. Very much a "trust the process" situation as I've never made a garment in this way before. It is a total game changer. The final iteration will have a chest pocket, full under stitching and proper stabilisation etc but this was more to test the unusual (for me) construction process. I still need to add buttons and do some last finishing details but overall, it's a really great pattern. This is made with leftover fabric from my #justmyluckjeans and some random mystery orange tartan lining from my stash. The pattern is #belvederewaistcoat from @threadtheorydesigns

Me Made Day 10, coming in a day late. Yesterday is was my cousin's wedding, which was absolutely beautiful and I absolutely used the excuse to sew something fancy. I made myself a @stylearc Belle dress using this absolutely stunningly vibrant pink silk from The Last Yarn that I couldn't resist buying a few months ago. It seemed pretty perfect for a spring wedding as it has peonies embroidered on with metallic thread. I made a size 28 with a 30 skirt for a bit more volume. The crispness of the fabric made for some quite dramatic sleeves and if I had had more time I would have cropped those for a shorter puff sleeve I think. One of the most fun aspects of the wedding was the ‘Asoebi’. It’s a West African tradition and all guests are invited to participate by incorporating a fabric the couple have chosen into something to wear for the evening celebration. As you can see in this photo of some of our extended family, the beautiful fabric they chose worked perfectly for the setting and the weather. . I made the #closetcorePauline for mine and the #Belvederewaistcoat by @threadtheorydesigns for our son and Mr T. I managed to incorporate the linen fabric I used for a previous dress as the lining and back. The idea of the Asoebi is to demonstrate a sense of unity, community, sharing and celebration in a very visual way. It fits perfectly. I made so many tiny adjustments on this waistcoat so that it would sit just right. I'm so proud of it. Understitched by hand to give the outside a clean finish, it's simplicity and clean lines give me all the feels. I didn't make any coats this year in the end, but I made something even more special - the waistcoat my brother wore to get married. My brother is a very tall man. While he managed to find a suit that was just (with alterations) long enough for him, the matching waistcoat was way too short. So, at Easter he asked me to make him one. I've made him waistcoats in the past for school, improv shows and theatre work, but I knew this one needed to be extra special. There was a mood board of design and colour options. I scoured every fabric website I knew of for months trying to find the right light blue wool for the front of the waistcoat. I struggled. Eventually, I found the perfect fabric in a dead stock fabric shop in Belgium. I think the shipping cost as much as the fabric. The lining took about 10 samples to choose the right colour. We went through 2 toiles with so many alterations I completely redrafted the facing and lining. I think I added about 8cm to the length, changed the overlap of the front, moved the buttonholes, altered the darts and took excess out of the back armhole. Then I made a full mock-up to check the fit and the construction method (the navy tweed version) It was a huge success, fit perfectly and looked great on my brother. I took a deep breath and cut out the real version. It was my first time working with a double faced wool, I fully interfaced it with a woven interfacing which gave a lovely structure, but it was still very thick to work with. However, it came together, it worked, it fit, and it looked amazing! The wedding was beautiful, a truly special day, and I was so honoured to have been a little part of it. I can finally post some projects! Everything I've worked on this year so far was for my wedding and honeymoon, so I was waiting to get good pictures. First up: the Haunted Mansion dress and vest. Project Notes: The dress pattern is the September Dress from @gunnardeatherage. I love the detail on the sleeve cuff, and it has pockets! I had to make a small bust adjustment to the bodice, which was tricky with the double darts. This was my first time making a double circle skirt, and it was the longest, most tedious hem I've ever sewn. But the result is so beautiful, and it's the twirliest thing I own. The vest is the Belvedere Waistcoat from @threadtheorydesigns. This was so much fun to make, I love waistcoats now. They're a great way to use up scrap fabric. The only modification was that I added 3" in length to match the length of other vests that Austin likes the fit of. Both the dress and vest are made with a Haunted Mansion wallpaper print cotton from TrimsandBeads on Etsy and a black satin from Joann Fabrics. I also made matching fabic covered buttons for both.
