The Newcastle is done! This pattern came together absolutely impeccably. The instructions lacked advice on clear finishing in a few places - I do not recommend sewing together all 4 layers of the neck withou basting, for instance! I took my time to ensure no innards will flop around since I try to make things for other people to the highest standard. (Heh funny that...) Size M was true to size and a really good fit, measured my man and shortened the body 2" accordingly (he isn't used to things being that short but it's still below belt level.) Sleeves were also long as other have mentioned, so I cut off about 2" before adding cuffs. I will see if he is willing to let me get blog photos... My Valentine came home from the office to a brand-new shawl collar cardigan in wool double knit. We’d seen some similar styles by Ralph Lauren for Ralph Lauren at Ralph Lauren’s cowboy store (by RL for Ralph Lauren), but they were wildly expensive relative to the garment. But! I remembered I had this lovely designer deadstock wool at home, plus the #NewcastleCardigan pattern by @threadtheorydesigns so I took a couple evenings while my husband was out of town and made this happen. Pattern: very, very simple to sew with clear instructions; sizing is spot on to store-bought menswear Fabric: via @corefabrics (no longer in stock) and is a fleck heavy double knit with a wool front and poly backing, so the interior is nice and smooth—also: machine washable! I made my love a beautiful little cardigan!! It's the #NewcastleCardigan by @threadtheorydesigns from a very nice acrylic/poly sweater knit from @marshallfabrics I LOVE sewing for Reid but it's still a little difficult to find fashionable and interesting designs in patterns for men generally and especially to fit his wide shoulders and large biceps. It doesn't matter if you are conservative, liberal, believer, unbelievable, red, blue, living under a rock or in the middle of the action. This book can bring light to all perspectives. I'm a big big proponent of stop slapping bandaids on issues and find the under current that is causing the ripples, waves and chaos on the surface. This book did a lot for me in that regard. I did do it on Audible and once I started, I could not stop. So, I will likely relisten or purchase a hard copy to dig deeper into some of the studies and topics they touch upon. Apparently comfort= menswear today. I made these @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans for Matt but they weren’t the right fit. They’re too big for me but that makes them more comfortable (obv need a belt) and the pockets are so deep! Paired with my #newcastlecardigan. The jeans have no mods and honestly they are wonderful (I don’t even mind the crotch bulge - more room! 😆) For the cardigan, I sewed for my bust and waist size and chopped the length of the bodice so it doesn’t sit at my fuller hips. #sewmenswearforeveryone

The last secret Christmas project: I made my partner a sweater! He doesn’t wear sweaters that often, so he was reluctant to ask me to knit him one—but when I told him I could sew him one in much less time, he lit up. Now, despite not *usually* wearing sweaters much, he pretty much lives in this—the best compliment a maker could ask for! This is the @threadtheory #newcastlecardigan in a very warm double-faced wool from Mood. The fabric is its own contrast, but I screwed up on those yokes at first because I wanted to sew them right sides together! Anyway, this wasn’t a super secret project because I consulted him at every step, so that I’d make sure to give him something he’d love. I’d say it was a success! (Edit: and he’s also wearing the vest I sewed him)

Second Christmas gift I made for my husband! . . After I made myself a Blackwood Cardigan, he kept saying how he’d like a cardigan himself. I’ve been wanting to try this Thread Theory pattern for a while, so it all came together! Unfortunately my buttonholer went on strike, so I ended up hand binding them (third photo) - definitely don’t want to do that again! 😅 . . Fabric is organic cotton French terry from @naturesfabrics . . Pattern is the #newcastlecardigan from @threadtheorydesigns . . Pattern pros: at some of the stages the instructions give you several options based on what type of fabric you have and what level of difficulty you want to take. . . Pattern cons: even as an intermediate sewist I found some of the instructions confusing and wasn’t really sure why they were asking things to be done a certain way (Ie the hem is supposed to have two lines of stitching sewn 1/4” apart - why not suggest a twin needle? And the finishing suggestions were often what you’d do for a woven rather than a knit) The shawl collar also didn’t turn out like the pictures, so I ended up tacking it into place. I also found the finished garment measurements chart hard to use because it wasn’t clear where the measurements were being taken from. . . Alterations: I wasn’t sure what size to make him, as he was in between S and M, I ended up going with S and it’s a little tight in the front, but fits well in the back. Finally finished the Newcastle Cardigan yesterday. This one is made out of wool sweater knit, and this weekend it's warm enough to hang out in a t-shirt. Argh! . . The fit is great. I usually plan most of my projects about a month or two in advance when I review my wardrobe for the upcoming season. That is when I look for gaps in what I have vs what I want to wear and look for patterns to fill those gaps. I don’t plan too far in advance because I like to keep my options open for new patterns (or new fabric 😜) that comes onto the market. However, for 2021 I already have a pretty good idea of what I want to make this year so I think I’ll actually do a #MakeNine ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Lisette for Butterick B6423 Coat-I need a new coat. I have sewn so many coats for my little guys but I’ve never sewn one for me. This project is already started so this one will be a gimme! 😁 2. Vintage baseball sweater for my husband using Thread Theory Newcastle Cardigan-I constantly ask my husband what I can sew for him. This year he had an answer! He wants a vintage-style baseball cardigan. IDK if it’ll be what he has in mind but I’m going to try! 😬 3. Liesl + Co Yanaka Jacket-I am dying to make this pattern and I need a light weight casual jacket for the spring. 4. Liesl + Co Fitzroy Shawl Collar Blouse-Another new pattern I have wanted to try out. I don’t own any button-down blouses. Its hard to find RTW blouses to fit with a large bust and I haven’t found any patterns that I love either. I am thinking this shawl collar will be a good silhouette for me. 5. Wild card-I will inevitably get inspired by some awesome pattern or fabric, so this slot is TBD. 6. Liesl + Co Hollywood Trousers-I need some nice trousers. I am very nervous to try fitting pants. I want to give myself a lot of time to tweak the fit. 7. Lisette for Butterick B6296 Winter Silk Pajamas-This project has been on my list since 2018. I’ve had the silk for 3 years. 😐 Hopefully this will be the year that I will finally get it done! 8. New coat for my son-I have used the same pattern to sew winter coats for my sons since they were little, but my big guy has outgrown the pattern. 😭 So this year I will be looking for a coat that will work for a 10-11 year boy. If you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them. 9. Oliver + S Christmas Sleepover Pajamas-I do this every year but never really put it on

I call this look, “Grandpa Chic” 👴🏻 Rocking a men’s @threadtheorydesigns Newcastle Cardigan modified to fit me in a less boxy, man-ish way. ✂️ ⁣ ⁣ I cut an XS, created some waist shaping and graded out the hips for a better fit, took in the shoulder seams 1/2”, and shortened the sleeve length by 1”. I absolutely love this cardigan!! Just the right amount of cozy but still looking tailored at the same time. ⁣ ⁣ Fabric is an Italian wool knit from @britexfabrics I splurged on during Cyber Monday, leather buttons are from @pacifictrimmings. ⁣ ⁣ Ladies, would/do you ever sew menswear for yourself?

The last secret Christmas project: I made my partner a sweater! He doesn’t wear sweaters that often, so he was reluctant to ask me to knit him one—but when I told him I could sew him one in much less time, he lit up. Now, despite not *usually* wearing sweaters much, he pretty much lives in this—the best compliment a maker could ask for! This is the @threadtheory #newcastlecardigan in a very warm double-faced wool from Mood. The fabric is its own contrast, but I screwed up on those yokes at first because I wanted to sew them right sides together! Anyway, this wasn’t a super secret project because I consulted him at every step, so that I’d make sure to give him something he’d love. I’d say it was a success! (Edit: and he’s also wearing the vest I sewed him)

The Newcastle is done! This pattern came together absolutely impeccably. The instructions lacked advice on clear finishing in a few places - I do not recommend sewing together all 4 layers of the neck withou basting, for instance! I took my time to ensure no innards will flop around since I try to make things for other people to the highest standard. (Heh funny that...) Size M was true to size and a really good fit, measured my man and shortened the body 2" accordingly (he isn't used to things being that short but it's still below belt level.) Sleeves were also long as other have mentioned, so I cut off about 2" before adding cuffs. I will see if he is willing to let me get blog photos... The sweatshirting is from @fabricbox_morningside (So dense and cozy! Second Christmas gift I made for my husband! . . After I made myself a Blackwood Cardigan, he kept saying how he’d like a cardigan himself. I’ve been wanting to try this Thread Theory pattern for a while, so it all came together! Unfortunately my buttonholer went on strike, so I ended up hand binding them (third photo) - definitely don’t want to do that again! 😅 . . Fabric is organic cotton French terry from @naturesfabrics . . Pattern is the #newcastlecardigan from @threadtheorydesigns . . Pattern pros: at some of the stages the instructions give you several options based on what type of fabric you have and what level of difficulty you want to take. . . Pattern cons: even as an intermediate sewist I found some of the instructions confusing and wasn’t really sure why they were asking things to be done a certain way (Ie the hem is supposed to have two lines of stitching sewn 1/4” apart - why not suggest a twin needle? And the finishing suggestions were often what you’d do for a woven rather than a knit) The shawl collar also didn’t turn out like the pictures, so I ended up tacking it into place. I also found the finished garment measurements chart hard to use because it wasn’t clear where the measurements were being taken from. . . Alterations: I wasn’t sure what size to make him, as he was in between S and M, I ended up going with S and it’s a little tight in the front, but fits well in the back.
