I bought this button flex gauge 6 months ago and this is the first chance I’ve had to use it! I haven’t been doing too much sewing lately because I’ve been really busy with work but I did teach both my sister and husband to sew tee shirts! I guess all my years of extolling the virtues of making one’s own clothes are finally getting through because they both separately asked me to teach them around the same time. Anyways. Not only did he knock out 6 tee shirts on my serger and tackle decorative topstitching with a twin needle, but then he went extra extra and blockprinted them too! He carved the tree block himself and bought a pack of Indian woodblock owls. 👏🏼😍 my work here is done. The tee pattern is the #strathconahenley by @threadtheorydesigns which I totally recommend! Shorts are made by me and are #jedediahpants also by @threadtheorydesigns.

After talking to my husband about all the things he would like to change about the #Woodleytee I made for him (previous post), I decided to go ahead and download a different pattern. This is the @threadtheorydesigns #strathconahenley #strathconatee and is marketed as a slim fit. It has a narrower neck, a narrower sleeve, and a slimmer bodice than the Woodley Tee. His measurements are Chest 42", Waist 36", Hip 40" which puts him at the top end of size Large. However, after tracing the projector file, I found his current t-shirts to match the Medium. So, I downsized to a medium and shortened the bodice by 2". I also shortened the sleeve by 1", but I will shorten the sleeve by 2" next time. I also added the pocket from the Woodley Tee, and now, he is happy 😅. And here is my husband's spring and summer wardrobe, carefully made with love by me 👩‍❤️‍👨💕 Now I am mostly making clothes for him, as I already made many dresses and tops for me, and do not really need anything more for now (if I sew something for me it's either activewear or something new I just want to try, or simply because I can! 😈). Mateusz needed a whole set of new t-shirts and shorts, especially that they became his everyday pieces of garments here (he refuses to wear jeans and sweatshirts in Australia 😆), and my goal was to create a matching set before our holiday in the beginning of May. The task have been completed successfully! 🎉 Not everything was made recently, but definitely most of what you can see here. The cloth hits both Scandi and noir notes, and has a pleasing autumnal weight to it 🍁 As for the pattern, it's a quick sew with great instructions. I would definitely recommend taking a few cm off the body before cutting. A Learning Shirt 🪡 This is a #strathconahenley in a size M, with no adjustments except for uhhhhh that I removed more length than intended. Also other unintended mods such as: - fully did not figure out how to stop my serger from eating the neckband until too late, resulting in a widening of the neckline by around 3/4 inch - a wavy hem band! - a wonky placket! - ribbed cuffs fully running in the wrong direction I really wanted to improve my Serger skills this year, and after a class at @gather_here I was ready to try. Despite mistakes, I came away from this shirt having learnt a ton, so I’m not too mad about it. This is also my first time sewing for someone else that I can actually try things on mid-process. I made the blue Henley for Ken a little over a year ago and he wears it ALL the time. I’ve learned a lot since then and I’m really proud of this orange version. It’s actually more of a rust color. 🪡Finished!🪡 This dress turned out exactly as I imagined it! (See a few posts back for the RTW inspiration.) The Marguerite dress is one of my all time favorite patterns and I’m already head over heels for this version. 😍 Details: Fabric: viscose from @pretty_mercerie (sold out now, but other colorways available) Pattern: @sewoveritlondon #soimargueritedress Modifications: My standard Marguerite pattern is a size 8 for the shoulders and bust and graded to a size 10 at the waist and hips. It is also narrowed in the upper back and the curve of the neckline is smoothed out a bit. For this version: 🧵I left off the arm cuffs and tried binding the edges with bias tape. It worked well, but with this floaty viscose the bias tape gives the armholes more structure that makes them stick out a bit. I actually kind of like it on this version but might not like it on all versions. 🧵I added a button placket to the center front neckline using the @threadtheorydesigns #strathconahenley pattern piece and instructions. It worked perfectly! It was only once I came to adding the buttons that I realized they were on the wrong side because it is a men’s pattern. 😅 That doesn’t bother me though. Plus, they aren’t necessary to use since there is a zipper closure at the back. But they are fully functional! (It didn’t even occur to me to just do a faux placket!) 🧵I installed the zipper all the way up to the neckline, rather than having the keyhole opening. My Valentine 💙 Champion of 4am diaper changes, dealing with 2-year-old naptime tantrums, keeping up with the never-ending dirty dishes, and cooking us dinner every night 💕 . This is the second time I sewed Steve a Strathcona Henley by @threadtheorydesigns, and this time I made the following mods: made a size S but graded the body down to an XS below the armholes, shaved a bit off the top of the sleeve caps, widened the forearms by about 1/2” total, and shortened the sleeves 1”. The body is still a bit long, but that works okay with this drapey cotton/rayon/spandex candied knit from @harts_fabric. After talking to my husband about all the things he would like to change about the #Woodleytee I made for him (previous post), I decided to go ahead and download a different pattern. This is the @threadtheorydesigns #strathconahenley #strathconatee and is marketed as a slim fit. It has a narrower neck, a narrower sleeve, and a slimmer bodice than the Woodley Tee. His measurements are Chest 42", Waist 36", Hip 40" which puts him at the top end of size Large. However, after tracing the projector file, I found his current t-shirts to match the Medium. So, I downsized to a medium and shortened the bodice by 2". I also shortened the sleeve by 1", but I will shorten the sleeve by 2" next time. I also added the pocket from the Woodley Tee, and now, he is happy 😅. A Learning Shirt 🪡 This is a #strathconahenley in a size M, with no adjustments except for uhhhhh that I removed more length than intended. Also other unintended mods such as: - fully did not figure out how to stop my serger from eating the neckband until too late, resulting in a widening of the neckline by around 3/4 inch - a wavy hem band! - a wonky placket! - ribbed cuffs fully running in the wrong direction I really wanted to improve my Serger skills this year, and after a class at @gather_here I was ready to try. Despite mistakes, I came away from this shirt having learnt a ton, so I’m not too mad about it. This is also my first time sewing for someone else that I can actually try things on mid-process. Terrifying. High stakes. Felt like a real ✨modiste✨ kneeling to pin the hem for someone else. . And here is my husband's spring and summer wardrobe, carefully made with love by me 👩‍❤️‍👨💕 Now I am mostly making clothes for him, as I already made many dresses and tops for me, and do not really need anything more for now (if I sew something for me it's either activewear or something new I just want to try, or simply because I can! 😈). Mateusz needed a whole set of new t-shirts and shorts, especially that they became his everyday pieces of garments here (he refuses to wear jeans and sweatshirts in Australia 😆), and my goal was to create a matching set before our holiday in the beginning of May. The task have been completed successfully! 🎉 Not everything was made recently, but definitely most of what you can see here. We stick with one beloved and very comfortable shorts pattern #triggshorts by @elbe_textiles and two different t-shirts: one more fitted #strathconahenley from @threadtheorydesigns oversized #sagetee from @elbe_textiles. From time to time I add some interesting details like pockets, raw finish, interesting stitching or seams. T-shirts are mostly made from cotton medium weight jersey and shorts from linen or cotton. The cloth hits both Scandi and noir notes, and has a pleasing autumnal weight to it 🍁 As for the pattern, it's a quick sew with great instructions. I would definitely recommend taking a few cm off the body before cutting. My Valentine 💙 Champion of 4am diaper changes, dealing with 2-year-old naptime tantrums, keeping up with the never-ending dirty dishes, and cooking us dinner every night 💕 . This is the second time I sewed Steve a Strathcona Henley by @threadtheorydesigns, and this time I made the following mods: made a size S but graded the body down to an XS below the armholes, shaved a bit off the top of the sleeve caps, widened the forearms by about 1/2” total, and shortened the sleeves 1”. The body is still a bit long, but that works okay with this drapey cotton/rayon/spandex candied knit from @harts_fabric. I was inspired to make this by @sewsewlive but I changed my mind about making the henley placket because I just don’t have the mental energy for that right now 😅 Hoping the faint frixon pen marking down the center front will fade with washing 🤞 . #hartsfabric #threadtheory #threadtheorydesigns #strathconahenley #sewistsofinstagram #portlandsews

I have quite a few makes to share of the Men’s wear items I made…some I sewed with you! But Mr. Sew Sew sprained his ankle and only today could we take some pictures. 😍 He’s on the mend. 🙌 Here is the Strathcona Henley by @threadtheorydesigns for @harts_fabric 💖 The pattern is similar to a thermal undershirt with a wide cuff and soft collar with a button placket. A very useful shirt for winter, under sweaters or as sleepwear. Fabric: This yarn-dyed stripe fabric from Harts is really nice! Its called Candied Knit and this is the color sky (item 101693) and it comes in a charcoal, red and a citron. It’s soft and the perfect weight for a stretchy T or undershirt like this or even baby items or a saucy dress. The Strathcona sews up pretty quick. I stuck to the instructions. This method is also really good for beginners for a placket like this. And she has other great tips in the instructions for beginners too. I’d probably sew it a bit differently if I do it again and maybe we can explore that together soon! I love popover plackets and getting really good at these is a very useful skill. (And will definitely be featured in one of the Skill Building Sessions coming soon to my new Guild!) I didn’t make any pattern or size modifications. I think this is the size Small.
