Last week it was knickers and this week it’s boxer shorts. This #comoxtrunks pattern by @threadtheorydesigns is my go to pattern every time. I usually buy a nice jersey remnant which usually makes a couple of pairs but this time I was able to make knickers too (previous post). I also found some really nice colours in the prym elastic. Loving that the #comoxtrunks are such good scrap busters. Almost all out of fabric but I was able to sew up 5 new pairs of boxers and all I bought new was the elastic. And the one who wears these has declared this the best yet, out of three patterns trialled so far. Thanks #threadtheory.

Rainbow crochet assault! I recently finished two more pairs of #comoxtrunks by @threadtheorydesigns. I've done this pattern 5 or so times now, but I decided to follow the hacks from a website. Snazzy gold topstitching! This includes: serged/topstitched seams everywhere, a seamless gusset, an alternate waistband, and trunks instead of a fly. I attempted to do fold-over-elastic (first try) for the hems, but that didn't work out, so I just used a twin needle. Overall, it's a fantastic, easy to follow pattern! More underwear coming your way! Carrying on with my easy January underwear makes, I decided to try to make a pair for Mr. Poppy Joy. I used the Comox Trunks from @threadtheorydesigns (a local fave of mine!). I chose some super soft bamboo jersey scraps from my stash. While the fabric is super luxe to wear next to the skin, it’s not very structured, so my model found the pair to be a bit baggy in the gusset. I pondered and pondered how to fix that, so I think I might cut the gusset smaller and stretch it further to meet the length between the legs. More like a hammock than a blanket, you know 🤔? When I get the energy to unpick it, I’ll try it and let you all know if it helped. I think it’s because the fabric is so super soft; I don’t think it would be the same if it were a more structured cotton perhaps… I also had some good feedback from a friend that lengthening the legs might help with that issue as well, as it keeps the legs from riding up and the fabric bunching where it shouldn’t. 🤷‍♀️ the more you know… The pattern itself was very easy to work from; great instructions and illustrations, and even a handy sew-along on the website. I think the only change I would make would be to sandwich the finished seam in between the front flap pieces, rather than be against the body. It was like this in the instructions, so the “good” side would be visible if the front flap was opened for the wearer to go “through the gate” rather than “over the fence”, but I personally would rather prioritize comfort . Either way, we were both very impressed that I was able to make a rather professional looking pair of unders with very little time and effort! I have learned a lot with this little project!!!! I wanted to push the limit of what I could do with my cover stitch machine and I’m so happy with the results! Looks just like an industrial seam but all using home sewing machines. I reduced the seam size for all the impacted seams by 1/8” and used wonder tape to hold it all together while I used the cover stitch upside down to hold the seams together. I did have to redo the seams a dozen times, but I suspect that was just the machine skipping stitches. I take no blame. Other mods include lengthening the hem by 2 inches and removing the front pocket. Of note, I also completely removed the tension for the wooly thread on the bottom hem and, after tons of misadventures with the thread shrinking and the seam tunneling, it turned out well! Pics are shown after washing. Glad I finally figured that one out. . . In a classic “I could make that” moment… instead of just buying new boxer briefs from Uniqlo for my partner for Christmas I decided to sew some… I got a bit obsessed with making big pants during the second Covid lock down so I knew the organic cotton jersey from @mademywardrobe was lovely to work with and I already have a stash of plush elastic from @newcrafthouse which made it even more of a no brainer. As I was trying to replicate what my other half already wears, I did alter the original pattern a wee bit. I cut the smallest size and instead of having a separate rear panel I added the pattern piece to the front as I wanted them to be as seamless as possible. I just overlocked the opening instead of binding, added to the leg length and increased the height of the waistband in order to attach the elastic using a method that I like. I definitely could have done some other little things like burrito-ing the gusset and trying to figure out something similar on the front cup in an effort to have no seam allowance against the skin, maybe next time. did some lingerie sewing over the weekend. It was a success. In the following essay I will nerd out over sewing details. ☺️ - 💙First, after owning the pattern forever, I finally got around to trying out the #sahaarabra from @rubiesbras in navy bra tulle. I sewed up view A with the waistband option as I was running low on black fold over elastic. It fits pretty well, but to make it fit *perfectly~* I’d need to move the cup seam inwards and take a bit of volume out of the top, and shorten the straps. Luckily for me, in snooping the hashtag on instagram I found the pattern maker has released version 2 with exactly these adjustments! and there it was sitting in my inbox waiting for me! So that’ll be next on the list to toile ☺️ - ❤️Then, I couldn’t help but cut into these kits from Emerald Erin immediately after they arrived. I’ve gotten into the habit of making a lil valentine’s set every year as a lil present to myself. 🥰 Such pretty lace deserves to be made into a tnt pattern. So it’s just a lace edge #blackbeautybra from @emeralderinsews. - For the matching undies, I had a lot of fun trying out all the views of #fridayfrenchcuts. 10/10 pattern perfect for matching sets with non stretch fabrics. 🙌 - Also whipped up yet another pair of #comoxtrunks for Scotty with cool mesh side panels for funsies. Here’s my entry for #sew500, hosted by @sewhayleyjane. About three years ago I started making underwear from fabric scraps. The excellent #mnacacia free pattern and #comoxtrunks have been tweaked and personalised until I’m now at the point of having both our drawers stuffed with fully handmade undies ☺️ They’re usually made from remnants or scraps from other projects, or cut up garments that have served their time and need a new life. did some lingerie sewing over the weekend. It was a success. In the following essay I will nerd out over sewing details. ☺️ - 💙First, after owning the pattern forever, I finally got around to trying out the #sahaarabra from @rubiesbras in navy bra tulle. I sewed up view A with the waistband option as I was running low on black fold over elastic. It fits pretty well, but to make it fit *perfectly~* I’d need to move the cup seam inwards and take a bit of volume out of the top, and shorten the straps. Luckily for me, in snooping the hashtag on instagram I found the pattern maker has released version 2 with exactly these adjustments! and there it was sitting in my inbox waiting for me! So that’ll be next on the list to toile ☺️ - ❤️Then, I couldn’t help but cut into these kits from Emerald Erin immediately after they arrived. I’ve gotten into the habit of making a lil valentine’s set every year as a lil present to myself. 🥰 Such pretty lace deserves to be made into a tnt pattern. So it’s just a lace edge #blackbeautybra from @emeralderinsews. - For the matching undies, I had a lot of fun trying out all the views of #fridayfrenchcuts. 10/10 pattern perfect for matching sets with non stretch fabrics. 🙌 - Also whipped up yet another pair of #comoxtrunks for Scotty with cool mesh side panels for funsies. Thought it would be fun for him to have some fun vday gimch too. All in all a very productive sewing weekend! #thesahaara #braaweekchallenge #brasewing

More underwear coming your way! Carrying on with my easy January underwear makes, I decided to try to make a pair for Mr. Poppy Joy. I used the Comox Trunks from @threadtheorydesigns (a local fave of mine!). I chose some super soft bamboo jersey scraps from my stash. While the fabric is super luxe to wear next to the skin, it’s not very structured, so my model found the pair to be a bit baggy in the gusset. I pondered and pondered how to fix that, so I think I might cut the gusset smaller and stretch it further to meet the length between the legs. More like a hammock than a blanket, you know 🤔? When I get the energy to unpick it, I’ll try it and let you all know if it helped. I think it’s because the fabric is so super soft; I don’t think it would be the same if it were a more structured cotton perhaps… I also had some good feedback from a friend that lengthening the legs might help with that issue as well, as it keeps the legs from riding up and the fabric bunching where it shouldn’t. 🤷‍♀️ the more you know… The pattern itself was very easy to work from; great instructions and illustrations, and even a handy sew-along on the website. I think the only change I would make would be to sandwich the finished seam in between the front flap pieces, rather than be against the body. It was like this in the instructions, so the “good” side would be visible if the front flap was opened for the wearer to go “through the gate” rather than “over the fence”, but I personally would rather prioritize comfort . Either way, we were both very impressed that I was able to make a rather professional looking pair of unders with very little time and effort! I have learned a lot with this little project!!!! Here’s my entry for #sew500, hosted by @sewhayleyjane. About three years ago I started making underwear from fabric scraps. The excellent #mnacacia free pattern and #comoxtrunks have been tweaked and personalised until I’m now at the point of having both our drawers stuffed with fully handmade undies ☺️ They’re usually made from remnants or scraps from other projects, or cut up garments that have served their time and need a new life.
