The Bearded One (aka @thom_chadwick ) has a new shirt! This is the #FairfieldShirt from @ThreadTheoryDesigns and is the 5th or 6th one I’ve made so far. The pattern has been tweaked into his perfect fit and this is the second half of my 4 metres of Abyss Blue linen that I used for my Ethel Pants. It’s a perfect weight for a shirt. The buttons were recycled off an old worn-out shirt and matched perfectly. So I’ve got 2 more of these shirts already cut out and they should be finished, oh, maybe around the time he switches to short sleeved shirts for summer? 😆 More Thread Theory: you can’t see them here but he’s wearing his #JutlandPants that I made last year. Western(ish) Fairfield Shirt 🤠 My boyfriend has wished for a shirt with a bit of a western look. I found this fabric at the Stitch Festival (sadly can’t remember the stall’s name) and loved the colors and scale of check. Last night was the fifth class of my six part “see your ultimate button up shirt“ class at @notionfabric. When I teach my sewing students to make button up shirts, we sew one step at a time, in order. Last night we built and attached the collars. However when I make shirts myself, I try to minimize the number of times I move between my table, my sewing machine, and my ironing board. To do that, I am often working on a different step on every single part of the garment simultaneously. This morning I started assembling this rainbow flannel shirt. Here is my setup of pinned pieces before I sat down at my sewing machine for the first time. Every single piece except for the collar stand got prepped and stitched one way or another in this first round of sewing. We were lucky enough to have our boy staying with us for the past few weeks in between travel and going back to uni 🥰 One day while in Melbourne we went to Drapers Fabrics in Brunswick Street where he chose this linen for a shirt … then he kindly reminded me on Tuesday that I hadn’t yet made it! New #fairfieldshirt Lovely linen fabric from @higgsandhiggs made for Mr T. Buttons from @textilegarden . The label was from @thisisformakers, unfortunately no longer available. I used a William Morris print cotton for the under collar and cuffs and even lined the pocket, although noone can see it. This is the fourth shirt I've made with this pattern although this time I changed the collar, copying the shape from a rtw shirt. It's a bit larger than the pattern collar. I also used the collar stand from the larger size (XL) as it was a bit tight. I find this pattern comes up small, making an L for someone who buys a rtw M. #sewover50jan #sewover50

I made our Christmas outfits this year! It all started when my daughter asked me to make her a Christmas outfit for her Christmas performance at school. She had a very clear vision of what she wanted. After looking at several variations of plaid, we agreed on this red buffalo plaid from @spotlightstores. Once we planned her outfit I thought her brother (in the same performance) would need something to wear too. Then I made a Bondi dress b/c I’ve been on a bit of a kick lately. A new shirt for Ian, made in the softest striped linen with corozo buttons in a gorgeous aqua colour. 🚂 His favourite #fairfieldshirt with the back dart option and customised sizing but this time with short sleeves, a novel departure for me with this pattern. 🚂 It was a very quick make, with no sleeve plackets or cuffs (and very economical with fabric!) 🚂 We bought the linen back in June in a fabulous shop in Palma which appealed to us both - swipe to see why! The Maths equations shirt is finished, gifted and judging by the smile liked a lot. Perfect for someone studying Maths at university. The #negronishirt was my first foray into shirt making ( I made the first one for my son when he was 15 there are pictures way back on my grid) but I then switched to the #fairfieldshirt for my husband. It was interesting to revisit the negroni. Making men's shirts is hard! After 4 unsuccessful attempts, here it is, #fairfieldshirt by @threadtheorydesigns. Medium-weight linen, size range S to L, version with a pleat, normal figures. @ghost.hotdog in the picture this time! I initially bought the pattern last year, but found it utterly confusing to work with because of pre-adjusted seam allowances. It is supposed to save time because you don't need to trim anything for flat-felled seams, however, the time I spent trying to position the fabric correctly was not worth it. Oof! I finally finished a batch sew of @threadtheorydesigns #fairfieldshirt . My husband started a new job this year which is more of a button down vibe than a t shirt vibe, and I found myself volunteering to make a whole batch. Five in fact! I’ll try and add some photos on said lovely model once they’ve been through the machine to take off all the marker pen. Menswear feels like the final frontier, because I’ve only just got to grips with fitting myself and my daughter. Also it seems like the finishing needs to be much more precise. But this week when I needed a “token” present for my husband’s birthday (he got a big combined Christmas/birthday present) I forced myself to get into it. I had seen @ohsewcarrie make a Fairfield shirt by @threadtheorydesigns at a sewing retreat and was impressed with how good it looked. It has instructions on how to choose a size based on a current well-fitting shirt, which was perfect, as I didn’t want to have to measure him and give the game away. The shirt came together really quickly, even with the flat-felled seams which I’d never done before; the instructions are excellent and there was no unpicking! I didn’t have enough fabric to make long sleeves but that was perfect as Steve needed a short-sleeved summer shirt anyway. (Also sleeve plackets are my most-hated sewing task.) As for fitting, I realised that men are pretty much straight up and down and there’s no fitting involved 😄 He loved it, and the token present became pretty special because I’d made it myself. I know this is two posts in one day, but I made my spouse the @threadtheory #fairfieldshirt for his birthday and he finally wore it today. When searching for a pattern for a button down that was specifically graded for the comparatively broader shoulders more common with a typical “menswear” body model, the options were pretty scarce. I thought about trying the more unisex Cameron shirt but the size difference between his shoulders and waist seemed like it would require significant grading and I wanted something already designed that would require less guessing. I’m sharing all this because I got blasted on Reddit for sharing this pattern as a #sizeinclusive option for men because the waist goes up to 54” rather than 60”. But in this scant universe of “men’s” patterns I think this one makes a decent effort. I’m curious what others think. (Also please correct if the way I described this genre of patterns wasn’t inclusive.) This is a medium with the back darts and I think it’s too snug in the hips so I may go up to one size to a large with the center pleat. Family 'me-made' clothes. This is the first time I've managed to get my menfolk to actually pose in their shirts. ....Too busy wearing them to have time for photos!! L is in a newly made @elbe_textiles #cornellshirt, whereas T's was made last year, as was P's shirt #fairfieldshirt. All made in beautiful #merchantandmills linens. The black linen was so buttery soft and fluid it felt like sewing with silk. The other two's linens were slightly stiffer and might therefore crease less easily. But as far as I am concerned, you can do no wrong with Merchant and Mills fabrics. I actually managed with both of the Cornell shirts to sew the buttons the female way, not the blokes'. I took a bit of a break from sewing over Christmas and into the new year, mostly as I was away from home (and my sewing machine) a lot! Oof! I finally finished a batch sew of @threadtheorydesigns #fairfieldshirt . My husband started a new job this year which is more of a button down vibe than a t shirt vibe, and I found myself volunteering to make a whole batch. Five in fact! I’ll try and add some photos on said lovely model once they’ve been through the machine to take off all the marker pen. It felt AMAZING to finish such a big project, and I’m surprised at how much I’ve enjoyed putting aside my original make9 plans to make clothes for people I love. Making men's shirts is hard! After 4 unsuccessful attempts, here it is, #fairfieldshirt by @threadtheorydesigns. Medium-weight linen, size range S to L, version with a pleat, normal figures. @ghost.hotdog in the picture this time! I initially bought the pattern last year, but found it utterly confusing to work with because of pre-adjusted seam allowances. It is supposed to save time because you don't need to trim anything for flat-felled seams, however, the time I spent trying to position the fabric correctly was not worth it. I chose the Fairfield for our first Pattern Party because having made it a few times I know what a great pattern it is, beautifully drafted with fabulous satisfying details that are well explained 🙏🏻 This is a buttery soft fine needle cord in Olive, stitched with brown thread and light wood buttons. The Maths equations shirt is finished, gifted and judging by the smile liked a lot. Perfect for someone studying Maths at university. The #negronishirt was my first foray into shirt making ( I made the first one for my son when he was 15 there are pictures way back on my grid) but I then switched to the #fairfieldshirt for my husband. An experiment! I used the marvellous #fairfieldbuttonup pattern for a shirt for me for a change. A wearable toile made from a very 1970s #StMichael duvet cover. Kind of worked - although maybe a bit too 70s with my mustard jeans. I did an XS and shortened the body and sleeves. I think a women's pattern might have worked a bit better - the sleeves and arm holes feel a bit big and it's inevitably tight across the bust (I already added some extra down the sides for hips). Maybe next time I'll combine the details from this pattern with with pieces from a women's one. Last night was the fifth class of my six part “see your ultimate button up shirt“ class at @notionfabric. When I teach my sewing students to make button up shirts, we sew one step at a time, in order. Last night we built and attached the collars. However when I make shirts myself, I try to minimize the number of times I move between my table, my sewing machine, and my ironing board. To do that, I am often working on a different step on every single part of the garment simultaneously. This morning I started assembling this rainbow flannel shirt. Here is my setup of pinned pieces before I sat down at my sewing machine for the first time. Every single piece except for the collar stand got prepped and stitched one way or another in this first round of sewing. This was quite a project as I needed to adjust the pattern a lot! It’s the Fairfield button-up Shirt by @threadtheorydesigns in some lovely soft babycord from @stonefabrics in Totnes. I made an XL and had to nip the shoulders in a bit and adjust the width and shorten the sleeves. I’ve made this pattern before but I think this is my best effort so far. I had lots of fingers crossed for the sizing as it was for a Christmas present. I’m a bit annoyed with myself as the sleeves cld do with being a cm or two longer - hmmmm. Making it more fun for me, he has opened up to a brighter color palette in his older age. I’m able to get more creative with the fabric choices which keeps it interesting. Menswear feels like the final frontier, because I’ve only just got to grips with fitting myself and my daughter. Also it seems like the finishing needs to be much more precise. But this week when I needed a “token” present for my husband’s birthday (he got a big combined Christmas/birthday present) I forced myself to get into it. I had seen @ohsewcarrie make a Fairfield shirt by @threadtheorydesigns at a sewing retreat and was impressed with how good it looked. It has instructions on how to choose a size based on a current well-fitting shirt, which was perfect, as I didn’t want to have to measure him and give the game away. The shirt came together really quickly, even with the flat-felled seams which I’d never done before; the instructions are excellent and there was no unpicking! I didn’t have enough fabric to make long sleeves but that was perfect as Steve needed a short-sleeved summer shirt anyway. (Also sleeve plackets are my most-hated sewing task.) As for fitting, I realised that men are pretty much straight up and down and there’s no fitting involved 😄 He loved it, and the token present became pretty special because I’d made it myself. Another @threadtheorydesigns #fairfieldshirt in the books! 👏🏻 My dad loves these shirts! I make him one every year for his birthday. Making it more fun for me, he has opened up to a brighter color palette in his older age. I’m able to get more creative with the fabric choices which keeps it interesting. I know this is two posts in one day, but I made my spouse the @threadtheory #fairfieldshirt for his birthday and he finally wore it today. When searching for a pattern for a button down that was specifically graded for the comparatively broader shoulders more common with a typical “menswear” body model, the options were pretty scarce. I thought about trying the more unisex Cameron shirt but the size difference between his shoulders and waist seemed like it would require significant grading and I wanted something already designed that would require less guessing. I’m sharing all this because I got blasted on Reddit for sharing this pattern as a #sizeinclusive option for men because the waist goes up to 54” rather than 60”. But in this scant universe of “men’s” patterns I think this one makes a decent effort. I’m curious what others think. (Also please correct if the way I described this genre of patterns wasn’t inclusive.) This is a medium with the back darts and I think it’s too snug in the hips so I may go up to one size to a large with the center pleat. We were lucky enough to have our boy staying with us for the past few weeks in between travel and going back to uni 🥰 One day while in Melbourne we went to Drapers Fabrics in Brunswick Street where he chose this linen for a shirt … then he kindly reminded me on Tuesday that I hadn’t yet made it! 30.07.22 ❤️ WEDDING DRESS PART 5: Not much more to say other than that I love it! I loved the process and I love the result, would happily make it all over again (or one of the million other complicated gowns that I have no purpose for that I'm dreaming of). The only thing that I wished I'd fixed before the day was it would have been nice to have built in bra cups to keep everything where it's supposed to be. When he eyes up a fabric that I’ve had in my stash for a few years and not so subtly requests a new shirt 😅 I’d been saving this cotton viscose for the perfect garment - it’s perfectly lightweight but structured enough to hold a pleat or a collar - but as it turns out that garment wasn’t meant for me 😂 I used the @threadtheorydesigns #FairfieldButtonUp with all his standard fitting adjustments (lowered and lengthened collar, size large shoulder - medium hip) and just straightened off the curved hem. My second hand made item for our wedding anniversary trip was a new shirt for my husband. As much as he's a big old Tony fan these days, he still likes a slightly more formal set up for some occasions. This is another Fairfield from @threadtheorydesigns made in a gorgeous blue and white toile du jouy style cotton print from @emporia_patterns, sadly now sold out. I made the same alterations as last year, ie eliminating the flat fell seams, shortening the sleeves and completing the collar as I would normally, rather than by following the instructions. All in all, this is still a great pattern and I enjoy making it as a contrast to all the clothes I make for me, and now in contrast to the Tony, which is quite different in look and construction. I particularly enjoyed making this shirt for him as a special item to wear on the day, but with him choosing the fabric and the pattern, and me just going along with what he wanted. It's nice to be able to make gifts or special items for people other than myself sometimes and I'm hoping he'll continue to wear it, and remember the fun we had in Lisbon when he does. An experiment! I used the marvellous #fairfieldbuttonup pattern for a shirt for me for a change. A wearable toile made from a very 1970s #StMichael duvet cover. Kind of worked - although maybe a bit too 70s with my mustard jeans. I did an XS and shortened the body and sleeves. I think a women's pattern might have worked a bit better - the sleeves and arm holes feel a bit big and it's inevitably tight across the bust (I already added some extra down the sides for hips). Maybe next time I'll combine the details from this pattern with with pieces from a women's one. Menswear feels like the final frontier, because I’ve only just got to grips with fitting myself and my daughter. Also it seems like the finishing needs to be much more precise. But this week when I needed a “token” present for my husband’s birthday (he got a big combined Christmas/birthday present) I forced myself to get into it. I had seen @ohsewcarrie make a Fairfield shirt by @threadtheorydesigns at a sewing retreat and was impressed with how good it looked. It has instructions on how to choose a size based on a current well-fitting shirt, which was perfect, as I didn’t want to have to measure him and give the game away. The shirt came together really quickly, even with the flat-felled seams which I’d never done before; the instructions are excellent and there was no unpicking! I didn’t have enough fabric to make long sleeves but that was perfect as Steve needed a short-sleeved summer shirt anyway. (Also sleeve plackets are my most-hated sewing task.) As for fitting, I realised that men are pretty much straight up and down and there’s no fitting involved 😄 He loved it, and the token present became pretty special because I’d made it myself. This was quite a project as I needed to adjust the pattern a lot! It’s the Fairfield button-up Shirt by @threadtheorydesigns in some lovely soft babycord from @stonefabrics in Totnes. I made an XL and had to nip the shoulders in a bit and adjust the width and shorten the sleeves. I’ve made this pattern before but I think this is my best effort so far. I had lots of fingers crossed for the sizing as it was for a Christmas present. I’m a bit annoyed with myself as the sleeves cld do with being a cm or two longer - hmmmm. It’s an XS and because it was a surprise I couldn’t fit it beforehand, so I ended up taking 2” off the bottom (which I definitely should have done at the lengthen / shorten line) and moving the pocket up by about that much. The pocket and back yoke are cut on the bias. Proud of the pattern matching across the front! I made my husband a @threadtheorydesigns Fairfield Button Up; I decided I’d model it instead of him because, let’s be honest, I’m going to borrow it and wear it on the regular. I’ve never understood the technical difference between a shacket and oversized button up. (Aren’t they the same thing?) Either way, this is a ridiculously cozy button up made with a surprisingly thick brushed flannel from @joann_stores . These shirts might be the garments I am most proud of to date. When John asked me to make him a Hawaiian shirt I was…less than thrilled. I was nervous about the collar, nervous about fitting another person, and dreaded what I assumed would be a complicated pattern. I used a new-to-me pattern company, @threadtheorydesigns, and their instructions made this shirt MUCH easier than I thought it would be. This was actually one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve ever sewn! For the collar, I used both the package instructions as well as the sewalong on their blog and they made it so easy! John wanted a loose fit so we sized up to an XXL but I graded down to an XL in the waist/hips. I also used the short sleeve download available from their website. A relatively significant modification I made was to not flat fell the sleeves and side seams. Honestly I just wasn’t confident in my ability to flat fell for the first time ever with this fiddly double gauze. Instead, I French seamed the side seams and then eased the sleeves in. Of course Michael wanted to match his dad, so he got a @childrenscornerstore Robert. I’ve never made a Robert shirt before but CC never disappoints! I struggled with the collar on this one but I watched a YouTube sewalong which helped! My second hand made item for our wedding anniversary trip was a new shirt for my husband. As much as he's a big old Tony fan these days, he still likes a slightly more formal set up for some occasions. This is another Fairfield from @threadtheorydesigns made in a gorgeous blue and white toile du jouy style cotton print from @emporia_patterns, sadly now sold out. I made the same alterations as last year, ie eliminating the flat fell seams, shortening the sleeves and completing the collar as I would normally, rather than by following the instructions. All in all, this is still a great pattern and I enjoy making it as a contrast to all the clothes I make for me, and now in contrast to the Tony, which is quite different in look and construction. I particularly enjoyed making this shirt for him as a special item to wear on the day, but with him choosing the fabric and the pattern, and me just going along with what he wanted. It's nice to be able to make gifts or special items for people other than myself sometimes and I'm hoping he'll continue to wear it, and remember the fun we had in Lisbon when he does. These shirts might be the garments I am most proud of to date. When John asked me to make him a Hawaiian shirt I was…less than thrilled. I was nervous about the collar, nervous about fitting another person, and dreaded what I assumed would be a complicated pattern. I used a new-to-me pattern company, @threadtheorydesigns, and their instructions made this shirt MUCH easier than I thought it would be. This was actually one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve ever sewn! For the collar, I used both the package instructions as well as the sewalong on their blog and they made it so easy! John wanted a loose fit so we sized up to an XXL but I graded down to an XL in the waist/hips. I also used the short sleeve download available from their website. A relatively significant modification I made was to not flat fell the sleeves and side seams. Honestly I just wasn’t confident in my ability to flat fell for the first time ever with this fiddly double gauze. Instead, I French seamed the side seams and then eased the sleeves in. Of course Michael wanted to match his dad, so he got a @childrenscornerstore Robert. I’ve never made a Robert shirt before but CC never disappoints! I struggled with the collar on this one but I watched a YouTube sewalong which helped! Well, praise be, I sewed my first men's shirt! I have been ruminating about this possibility for some time, but I am selfish about my sewing projects and have a backlog of stuff for moi, so it took awhile to get 'er done. This is an early Father's Day shirt for my guy and is the @threadtheorydesigns #fairfieldbuttonup This is definitely a slim-fit shirt since this medium fits my decidedly slim fella pretty well. I did not make a muslin since it was a surprise. The only face palm moment was realizing that bc I had made it short-sleeved I should have widened the sleeve a bit at the bottom. It tapered too much and I had to unpick my lovely flat felled seams up to the armpit and fudge that section to make it wider. (Hopefully no one will look too closely at his armpits besides me!) The fabric is a cotton sateen shirting from @fabricmart and is SO soft and silky--still in stock as of today (yes, I looked again🙄..) When he eyes up a fabric that I’ve had in my stash for a few years and not so subtly requests a new shirt 😅 I’d been saving this cotton viscose for the perfect garment - it’s perfectly lightweight but structured enough to hold a pleat or a collar - but as it turns out that garment wasn’t meant for me 😂 I used the @threadtheorydesigns #FairfieldButtonUp with all his standard fitting adjustments (lowered and lengthened collar, size large shoulder - medium hip) and just straightened off the curved hem. Last night was the fifth class of my six part “see your ultimate button up shirt“ class at @notionfabric. When I teach my sewing students to make button up shirts, we sew one step at a time, in order. Last night we built and attached the collars. However when I make shirts myself, I try to minimize the number of times I move between my table, my sewing machine, and my ironing board. To do that, I am often working on a different step on every single part of the garment simultaneously. This morning I started assembling this rainbow flannel shirt. Here is my setup of pinned pieces before I sat down at my sewing machine for the first time. Every single piece except for the collar stand got prepped and stitched one way or another in this first round of sewing. An experiment! I used the marvellous #fairfieldbuttonup pattern for a shirt for me for a change. A wearable toile made from a very 1970s #StMichael duvet cover. Kind of worked - although maybe a bit too 70s with my mustard jeans. I did an XS and shortened the body and sleeves. I think a women's pattern might have worked a bit better - the sleeves and arm holes feel a bit big and it's inevitably tight across the bust (I already added some extra down the sides for hips). Maybe next time I'll combine the details from this pattern with with pieces from a women's one. This was quite a project as I needed to adjust the pattern a lot! It’s the Fairfield button-up Shirt by @threadtheorydesigns in some lovely soft babycord from @stonefabrics in Totnes. I made an XL and had to nip the shoulders in a bit and adjust the width and shorten the sleeves. I’ve made this pattern before but I think this is my best effort so far. I had lots of fingers crossed for the sizing as it was for a Christmas present. I’m a bit annoyed with myself as the sleeves cld do with being a cm or two longer - hmmmm. Making it more fun for me, he has opened up to a brighter color palette in his older age. I’m able to get more creative with the fabric choices which keeps it interesting. Menswear feels like the final frontier, because I’ve only just got to grips with fitting myself and my daughter. Also it seems like the finishing needs to be much more precise. But this week when I needed a “token” present for my husband’s birthday (he got a big combined Christmas/birthday present) I forced myself to get into it. I had seen @ohsewcarrie make a Fairfield shirt by @threadtheorydesigns at a sewing retreat and was impressed with how good it looked. It has instructions on how to choose a size based on a current well-fitting shirt, which was perfect, as I didn’t want to have to measure him and give the game away. The shirt came together really quickly, even with the flat-felled seams which I’d never done before; the instructions are excellent and there was no unpicking! I didn’t have enough fabric to make long sleeves but that was perfect as Steve needed a short-sleeved summer shirt anyway. (Also sleeve plackets are my most-hated sewing task.) As for fitting, I realised that men are pretty much straight up and down and there’s no fitting involved 😄 He loved it, and the token present became pretty special because I’d made it myself.
