Bike clothes made by me! My friend @tokay.ca does a big fundraiser for kids cancer research in August and wanted a long-sleeve jersey for sun protection on his arms. I made this out of a mystery fabric in my stash that I believe is Polartec Power Dry (it will wick away sweat and keep him dry and comfy!) along with my final scrap of Polartec Power Stretch in this hi-vis coral from @discoveryfabrics . The pattern is #jalie2216 with a few fit modifications and long sleeves added. For our bike ride today, I made this @fehrtrade #surftosummittop out of remnants of Power Dry acquired over time from @discoveryfabrics . I like this body fit of this top but plan to redo how the zipper is put in, and add a square shoulder adjustment to the raglan sleeves. I’ve been sitting out #memademay2023 so far, but I’ve been wanting to share this #surftosummittop by @fehrtrade for awhile because I haven’t seen many posts about it. This is a size small made in a merino jersey from @blackbirdfabrics. If I made it again, I’d probably go even a size smaller and make better use of the stretch of the fabric. As it is, the jersey hangs a little loose. I didn’t make any fit mods, but I did make some other adjustments. The long-sleeve pattern has optional built in mitts, which is a great design feature, but they don’t have thumb holes, and the wool jersey isn’t stretchy or thin enough to use your thumb through the fabric. I realized this a little too deep into the construction process, so my resulting hacked-in openings are very very hacky. Other than that, this pattern came together so easily. Looking forward to making one for myself.

Now that I’m digging #trailrunning I thought I’d try a go at an outfit! Ready to wear gear just doesn’t quite fit my body type. Omg I had SUCH A BLAST TODAY!! Who knew cycling 100 miles could be so much fun?! I honestly had a smile on my face the whole time (even when it started raining and my fingers went numb!) - the new @ridelondon Essex course is even better than the Surrey one, the other riders and marshals were brilliant and I felt -so- strong on the bike today! I even finished 90min faster than I was expecting! 😝 Honestly, the past two years shielding that I spent climbing up mountains in @gozwift totally paid off because I was flying past everyone on the uphills (& I didn’t even have to shift out of the big chainring!). I even managed a sprint finish onto Tower Bridge, goading the spectators into cheering further! 😎 This was a full day and I’m bursting with stories to tell, but for now, take my first impressions… and sew your own activewear, people!! Tomorrow I ride 100 miles as part of @ridelondon! I rode it in 2019 but it’s a new course through Essex this year and after two years of training while shielding at home on @gozwift I can’t wait to see how my legs perform! 😝 I’ll be riding purely for fun tomorrow, and in entirely self-sewn cycling gear - the jersey is our Surf to Summit Top pattern, bib shorts are our Rouleur Leggings pattern, my arms will be warm at the start thanks to our free Arm Sleeves pattern, and last weekend I whipped up a matching @jalie_patterns Coco sports bra just for good measure!! This whole kit was sewn using a mix of upcycled race tees plus some fabrics from @funkifabrics & @tiaknightfabrics. Last Saturday it was Box Hill (IRL), but today it was my turn to ride the dreaded Four Horsemen route in Zwift! This is one of the hardest routes in the entire game and takes in each of the climbs in Watopia, getting progressively harder and harder (starting with the Hilly KOM, then Volcano KOM, then the Epic KOM with the radio tower, followed by the Alpe du Zwift). It’s 89km with over 2000m of climb and Coach has had me doing portions of it over the last two months building to completing the entire route today. The Alpe is a turn-by-turn recreation of the famous Alpe d’Huez climb and is, quite frankly, character building on its own, let alone after 2hrs of climbing other summits! I honestly have no idea how I managed it, but I actually got an all-time PB on the Alpe today!! 😱 Maybe watching Hamilton should be considered a performance enhancing drug?? 🤔 I finally completed the route after just over 4hrs, taking in 3 bottles of electrolyte, 2 bars, and a pack of gummies. I rode 85km this morning, from London down to Box Hill and around with a lovely gang of ladies from @10ironwomen! I had an absolutely blast and, despite all my Zwifting, I don’t often cycle outdoors as much as I’d like (mostly for navigation and traffic issues) but it felt so good to go on an adventure after such a long time AND get to chat while exercising too, which I really miss! I wore my Alpine cycling kit which I made last year using a printed Spider fabric from @funkifabrics and refashioned race tees and it held up beautifully outside, too. Our Surf to Summit Top and Rouleur Leggings combo just can’t be beat for long rides, and I’ll probably wear this set again to do Ride100 in a few weeks’ time, too. I made my husband a #surftosummittop by @fehrtrade using a merino active blend by @wearethefabricstore. I lengthened it by 2‘‘ and used the full zipper hack from Melissa’s blog. It was straightforward to adjust the width for a tight fit, thanks to the side panels. Radoutfit made by me…   Heute zeige ich euch mein selbst genähtes Sportoutfit bestehend aus der #roulerleggings und dem #surftosummittop von @fehrtrade . Inspiriert zu den Werken hat mich @500_days_of_sewing . Als ich ihr Radoutfit gesehen habe, wusste ich sofort: „Genau das brauche ich auch. In genau diesen Farben!“ Ich hoffe, sie verzeiht mir meine Raubkopien…Aber: Ich besaß noch nie so bequeme Sportsachen! Die Hose und das Top sind aus etwas dickerem Poly-Stretch, seeehhr bequem und die Jacke ist aus Merino-Softshell von @extremtextil. Die #rouleurleggins habe ich in allen drei Längen genäht, wie sie im Schnitt dabei sind. Jeweils mit den Seitentaschen, soo praktisch für Handy etc. Das #surftosummittop habe ich für die langärmlige Jacke gehackt, um einen durchgehenden Reißverschluss zu haben und für das Radtop darunter bis zur Taille mit einem Nahtverdeckten Reißverschluss. Beides sind ganz einfache Änderungen, einfach anstatt im Bruch mit NZ zugeschnitten und geteilt. Hinten habe ich mit farblich passendem Powernet (zufällig von der Unterwäsche-Herstellung zuhause gehabt) die typische Raddress-Tasche genäht um kleinere Dinge einstecken zu können. Um die Hose auch zu anderen Sportarten tragen zu können habe ich das Gelpolster nicht eingenäht, sondern trage eine separate Radunterhose darunter. Bei der langen Hose habe ich das mittlere Vorderteil noch extra zugeschnitten, wie original. Bei den kürzeren Hosen dann an die Beinteile geklebt und in einem zugeschnitten, dann entsteht keine Quernaht. Diese Hose hat keine Innenbeinnähte, sehr angenehm beim Sport!!! I’ve got a staycation from my office job this week and I fully intend to sew through it! 😝 I’ve started off by making another Surf to Summit Top and Rouleur Leggings set using some lush alpine print fabric from @funkifabrics (in their Spider base). I’m also using my own tutorial from last summer to make a full-front opening zipper and I couldn’t help but admire how nice it turned out! Can you believe this pale blue zip in the perfect length was just hanging out in my stash?! 🤩 The key to inserting zippers into stretchy activewear fabrics is to ALWAYS interface the edge you’ll be attaching to the zipper, making it wide enough to cover the topstitching, too. I decided to use my coverstitch machine for the topstitching here but you could just as easily use a straight stitch on a regular sewing machine since it’s already interfaced! More detail on this set is in my IG Stories and I’ll (of course!) share the full cycling set when it’s completed. #memademay2021 Day 25 Didn't manage to take a photo in the office before I had to set off in the pouring rain to cycle 10km across the city to another site. Somehow hadn't anticipated the downpour so didn't have my waterproof leggings! Not sure why given the May weather so far. Decided to abandon the cycling leggings for shorts as skin dries faster. This is on arrival home after I'd had a hot drink and finished off some work admin. Day nine of #memademay2021 ready for a damp day in the garden with the mutt. Wearing my recently finished (yesterday!) #surftosummittop by #fehrtradepatterns. This is my second one and I squeezed this one out of the remnants from my first one, lovely merino Lycra mix. This one I omitted the zip at the neck and could only squeeze out shortish sleeves, but I like them! Also a #memade apron I made decades ago from n old shirt and some old curtains. I wear it all the time. Whisky-dog wasn’t keen on sitting still for a photo 🤣

Another cycling set finished. Swipe for action-ish shots on my last training ride before my big ride next weekend. The fabric for all the pieces is from @fabcyclevan. The top is @fehrtrade #SurfToSummitTop in lightweight floral poly with a zipper from @seattlerecreative. I didn't even think about pattern matching, but I got lucky and it's close enough across the front. This is cool, keeps my shoulders out of the sun, and has three big pockets on the back. Underneath is a matching @apostrophe.patterns #MyFitSportsBra, which has already become a go-to for me because it's so comfortable and customizable. The shorts are Fehr Trade's #RouleurLeggings. The grey chitosante fabric is firmer than what I used for my last pair so the only adjustments I made were taking the front seams in 1/4" and shortening the bib. The pink fabric is two-way stretch and the pattern calls for four-way, but I figured it would be fine on the sides and bands and I didn't have any issues. I added a big cushy chamois from @aerotechdesigns which will be good for my long ride next weekend. Once again I used wooly nylon with regular poly thread in the bobbin to sew in the chamois and topstitch a couple of seams and it worked well. Just like the last pair, these are halter-style bibs. I love this pattern and this style. They are so comfortable but still easy to get on and off for bathroom breaks without removing my jersey. I'm excited to go into my event with bike clothes that I made myself! #SeattleSews #DIYWardrobe

A couple of recent activewear makes in a not-so-active context (hence the Crocs). I did my wearable toile of the compression bottoms block from #sewyourownactivewear (free download with book purchase) and their fit is similar to what I get in RTW. My pattern adjustments included lengthening the rise 2 cm at the centre back and 1 cm everywhere else, shortening the leg, and scooping 2 cm or so from the back crotch curve. The fit is pretty good so after a full calf adjustment the block will be good to go. Fabric is a space-dyed supplex blend from #dressew and scraps have already gone into a sports bra. The top is my second #surftosummittop in angelskin from #discoveryfabrics with a shortened back pocket and folded reflective tape in the shoulder seams. #bcsews #okanagansews #sewover40 #sewyourownactivewearfehrtrade #fehrtradepatterns #sewingwithknits

Day nine of #memademay2021 ready for a damp day in the garden with the mutt. Wearing my recently finished (yesterday!) #surftosummittop by #fehrtradepatterns. This is my second one and I squeezed this one out of the remnants from my first one, lovely merino Lycra mix. This one I omitted the zip at the neck and could only squeeze out shortish sleeves, but I like them! Also a #memade apron I made decades ago from n old shirt and some old curtains. I wear it all the time. Whisky-dog wasn’t keen on sitting still for a photo 🤣

New bike clothes for a big ride! I made this sparkly set for day 2 of RSVP, a 190 mile ride from Seattle to Vancouver BC. Day 1 was a rainy mess, but day two was pretty lovely, even though our riding party had two flats, a bonk, and a fall (that one was me and I'm fine!). I really like this slightly ridiculous cycling set. Astronaut Barbie? Hi-viz Ziggy Stardust? Mork from Ork? You choose! Sewing in a chamois pad remains one of the most annoying sewing tasks I've ever done but it's worth it for custom clothes that are comfy and fun. I used my go-to @fehrtrade patterns for cycling, the #RoulerLeggings and #SurfToSummitTop. I made a size small in both with just a few alterations on the shorts, taking a few seams in a bit to account for the stretch of this fabric and shortening the bib. I also left out the mesh lining and left the bib edges unfinished. Topped off the outfit with a new hat from @zephyrlineworkshop that I modified a bit to account for my tiny head. The pink fabric is from @oursocialfabric and the silver is from a @seattlesewsmeetups swap, courtesy of @the_mugwumpus. The silver fabric is just a touch too sheer for this application so I doubled up the back panel on the shorts for the sake of anyone riding behind me. It's also a lot more sparkly than these photos show; swipe for a close up of the reflective rainbowy goodness. Sun came out for my long ride yesterday. Weather was 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 but I was on the struggle bus for the back half of this one. One of my fave me-made jerseys with @katiekortmanart fabric using @fehrtrade #surftosummittop pattern.

Omg I had SUCH A BLAST TODAY!! Who knew cycling 100 miles could be so much fun?! I honestly had a smile on my face the whole time (even when it started raining and my fingers went numb!) - the new @ridelondon Essex course is even better than the Surrey one, the other riders and marshals were brilliant and I felt -so- strong on the bike today! I even finished 90min faster than I was expecting! 😝 Honestly, the past two years shielding that I spent climbing up mountains in @gozwift totally paid off because I was flying past everyone on the uphills (& I didn’t even have to shift out of the big chainring!). I even managed a sprint finish onto Tower Bridge, goading the spectators into cheering further! 😎 This was a full day and I’m bursting with stories to tell, but for now, take my first impressions… and sew your own activewear, people!! Another cycling set finished. Swipe for action-ish shots on my last training ride before my big ride next weekend. The fabric for all the pieces is from @fabcyclevan. The top is @fehrtrade #SurfToSummitTop in lightweight floral poly with a zipper from @seattlerecreative. I didn't even think about pattern matching, but I got lucky and it's close enough across the front. This is cool, keeps my shoulders out of the sun, and has three big pockets on the back. Underneath is a matching @apostrophe.patterns #MyFitSportsBra, which has already become a go-to for me because it's so comfortable and customizable. The shorts are Fehr Trade's #RouleurLeggings. The grey chitosante fabric is firmer than what I used for my last pair so the only adjustments I made were taking the front seams in 1/4" and shortening the bib. The pink fabric is two-way stretch and the pattern calls for four-way, but I figured it would be fine on the sides and bands and I didn't have any issues. I added a big cushy chamois from @aerotechdesigns which will be good for my long ride next weekend. Once again I used wooly nylon with regular poly thread in the bobbin to sew in the chamois and topstitch a couple of seams and it worked well. Just like the last pair, these are halter-style bibs. I love this pattern and this style. They are so comfortable but still easy to get on and off for bathroom breaks without removing my jersey. Last Saturday it was Box Hill (IRL), but today it was my turn to ride the dreaded Four Horsemen route in Zwift! This is one of the hardest routes in the entire game and takes in each of the climbs in Watopia, getting progressively harder and harder (starting with the Hilly KOM, then Volcano KOM, then the Epic KOM with the radio tower, followed by the Alpe du Zwift). It’s 89km with over 2000m of climb and Coach has had me doing portions of it over the last two months building to completing the entire route today. The Alpe is a turn-by-turn recreation of the famous Alpe d’Huez climb and is, quite frankly, character building on its own, let alone after 2hrs of climbing other summits! I honestly have no idea how I managed it, but I actually got an all-time PB on the Alpe today!! 😱 Maybe watching Hamilton should be considered a performance enhancing drug?? 🤔 I finally completed the route after just over 4hrs, taking in 3 bottles of electrolyte, 2 bars, and a pack of gummies. I’ve got some lovely deadstock en route from @corefabrics for this. I’m hoping the #richmondcoat by @tessutifabrics will fulfill my need for a coat that can fit over giant sleeves. I’ll go herringbone, but I’m teetering between a lush color and a classic grey for this. I’ll probably base it on the #sandycircleskirt from @freesewing_org, but I hope it has the same timeless appeal as this one by kmakesthings (tagged in image) I was completely enamored of @marcelinewu ‘s version of #thecarpediemsweater by @laerkebagger and now I probably need one. I sort of want to steal the green color palette too, but maybe will opt for iridescence? Final make is a bit nebulous and more of a general goal to #refashion garments I have. I recovered my first communion dress while cleaning out my mom’s house this summer. I was a substantial 7 year old, so I can almost fit into it as is, but it’s not quite my look. The fabric is a nice crisp linen / cotton blend that I think will make a good blouse, and the decorative bits may become lingerie? We will see.

Tomorrow I ride 100 miles as part of @ridelondon! I rode it in 2019 but it’s a new course through Essex this year and after two years of training while shielding at home on @gozwift I can’t wait to see how my legs perform! 😝 I’ll be riding purely for fun tomorrow, and in entirely self-sewn cycling gear - the jersey is our Surf to Summit Top pattern, bib shorts are our Rouleur Leggings pattern, my arms will be warm at the start thanks to our free Arm Sleeves pattern, and last weekend I whipped up a matching @jalie_patterns Coco sports bra just for good measure!! This whole kit was sewn using a mix of upcycled race tees plus some fabrics from @funkifabrics & @tiaknightfabrics. I rode 85km this morning, from London down to Box Hill and around with a lovely gang of ladies from @10ironwomen! I had an absolutely blast and, despite all my Zwifting, I don’t often cycle outdoors as much as I’d like (mostly for navigation and traffic issues) but it felt so good to go on an adventure after such a long time AND get to chat while exercising too, which I really miss! I wore my Alpine cycling kit which I made last year using a printed Spider fabric from @funkifabrics and refashioned race tees and it held up beautifully outside, too. Our Surf to Summit Top and Rouleur Leggings combo just can’t be beat for long rides, and I’ll probably wear this set again to do Ride100 in a few weeks’ time, too. Up on FehrTrade.com today I'm talking about the last two pieces I sewed recently to complete my Alpine cycling set! When I made the original set last summer, I used our Surf to Summit Top pattern and Rouleur Leggings pattern for the jersey and bib shorts, but didn't think I'd need a matching sports bra - but I was wrong! So I scrounged enough from the scraps of fabric and upcycled tees to sew another Jalie Coco to match. And then I saw that the forecast for Sunday was chilly, so I used the last bit of blue supplex to make myself some matching Arm Sleeves (with our free pattern), too! I’ve got a staycation from my office job this week and I fully intend to sew through it! 😝 I’ve started off by making another Surf to Summit Top and Rouleur Leggings set using some lush alpine print fabric from @funkifabrics (in their Spider base). I’m also using my own tutorial from last summer to make a full-front opening zipper and I couldn’t help but admire how nice it turned out! Can you believe this pale blue zip in the perfect length was just hanging out in my stash?! 🤩 The key to inserting zippers into stretchy activewear fabrics is to ALWAYS interface the edge you’ll be attaching to the zipper, making it wide enough to cover the topstitching, too. I decided to use my coverstitch machine for the topstitching here but you could just as easily use a straight stitch on a regular sewing machine since it’s already interfaced! More detail on this set is in my IG Stories and I’ll (of course!) share the full cycling set when it’s completed. I made my husband a #surftosummittop by @fehrtrade using a merino active blend by @wearethefabricstore. I lengthened it by 2‘‘ and used the full zipper hack from Melissa’s blog. It was straightforward to adjust the width for a tight fit, thanks to the side panels. The front was a great fit as is, but I had to take in the back a fair bit. #sewyourownactivewear #sewersofinstagram #sewersgonnasew

I’ve been sitting out #memademay2023 so far, but I’ve been wanting to share this #surftosummittop by @fehrtrade for awhile because I haven’t seen many posts about it. This is a size small made in a merino jersey from @blackbirdfabrics. If I made it again, I’d probably go even a size smaller and make better use of the stretch of the fabric. As it is, the jersey hangs a little loose. I didn’t make any fit mods, but I did make some other adjustments. The long-sleeve pattern has optional built in mitts, which is a great design feature, but they don’t have thumb holes, and the wool jersey isn’t stretchy or thin enough to use your thumb through the fabric. I realized this a little too deep into the construction process, so my resulting hacked-in openings are very very hacky. Other than that, this pattern came together so easily. Looking forward to making one for myself.
