The Quadra Jeans feature a classic straight leg with a slight taper and extra room in the thigh for movement. They sit below the waist as a moderate low rise and can be sewn in denim with no stretch or up to 2% elastane. The waistband is drafted in two pieces with a center back seam hidden under the belt loop, allowing for easy fit modifications.

Yesterday I finished my third pair of Quadra jeans for hubby. This time the request was for a grey pair with purple topstitching. Over the three pairs I’ve made we’ve refined the fit so they are perfect on him. I promised my fella some bespoke jeans. I started them back in May but was frustrated with a wonky flat felled seam on the yoke and burnt fingers. Not that we leave the house much these days but cooler weather does call does call for jeans. Back to the machine today. They’re looking good so far. I love this man 😍 He is wearing #quadrajeans from @threadtheorydesigns in Japanese popcorn denim from @blackbirdfabrics I added an inch to the rise and forgot to raise the pocket placement so they’re a bit low but he said it’s fine lol The last couple of photos were taken fresh off the machine. I have since shorten the hem by an inch.

Next to getting the perfect fit, I swear the zipper fly is one of the trickiest parts of sewing jeans! I’m working on my handmade denim using the Thread Theory Quadra Jeans pattern, and whew—this part always makes me pause and take a deep breath. It’s one of those sewing steps where precision really matters, but once it’s in place… it’s so satisfying. Zipper fly tips I’ve learned: ✔ Baste everything first ✔ Press like your life depends on it ✔ Trust the process—it looks weird until it doesn’t ✔ Don’t rush the topstitching! There’s just something about that clean finish and professional look that makes the effort worth it. But now I’m wondering—has anyone adapted this pattern for a button fly instead? What you see here is a serious case of long, lean leg syndrome. A certain quite tall family member has had some health challenges that have resulted in weight loss. We were at the point of not being able to find RTW jeans that were both small enough in the waist while still long enough in the leg. I proposed a custom alternative and, believe me, there were smiles on this young man's face. I absolutely cannot recommend the #quadrajeans by @threadtheorydesigns enough! I definitely had some struggles along the way, but that was purely due to machine issues as I got used to some pretty bulky seams. I used a vintage machine for the topstitching and once I got the tension figured out it was awesome. I have decided that I need to pick up a rubber mallet and chunk of wood to keep in my sewing room for future jeans making projects 😊. This pair was made using a non-stretch 10 oz denim from @fabricland.canada , which was great, but I also have plans to see what else the internet has to offer from Canada's selection of fabric sources. Don't you just love his choice of pocket design ❤️? The second project I finished for #wholefabric30challenge is another pair of jeans, this one a surprise Christmas gift for my partner. I made them using the @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans pattern with absolutely no modifications, which is just rude. (Don’t mind me, I’m just jealous) Made with a Japanese stretch denim, these wound up being so soft and wearable that if there were any chance in all the hells known to mankind that these would fit me, they wouldn’t belong to my partner for long. But alas, I do love him enough to let him have them. Finished on the 23rd, these just barely made it under the tree before they came out again. The pockets are made out of a quilting cotton that I previously used to make myself a shirt. I’m really proud of these. Just don’t look too closey at the buttonhole. Even though we’re very different sizes, the Japanese denim was so narrow that these used the same about 3 m of denim plus 50cm of pocketing, bringing me up to 7/30 on the challenge. #sewistsofinstagram #imakeclothes #postapocalypticlifeskill

Love the way this lilac corduroy from the @wearethefabricstore catches the light and appears to change colour in each photo. Finished the #quadrajeans at 11pm the night before my work Christmas party, then decided that I really needed a waistcoat to make it a #corduroycocktail outfit. Didn’t have a pattern or a waistcoat to go off, so I used a Tshirt to get a rough sizing, then cut the fabric free hand. Had such a fabulous weekend seeing people at #brisbanefrocktails, that I just had to wear my #memade outfit again for the first Spring day in the office. The fabric was a great weight to hold a pointy collar, just needed to make sure of the flower placement. Very happy with the colour matching the heart of the flower on the shirt with the orange corduroy pants. Hello! Here I am in my vibrant, yet overgrown spring backyard wearing a fresh-off-the @jukihomesewing @mccallpatterncompany #m7387 view A in navy double gauze. This is my first time using double gauze and I love how soft it is! The jeans are the first pair of @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans I made for D that no longer fit him since he has shed a few pounds. So, like @suestoney I, too, am wearing my husband's jeans. There is A LOT of slip stitching on this blouse. Many episodes of On the Case with Paula Zahn were binged while hand stitching the button band, sleeve cuffs, and collar. The only mod was the usual broad back adjustment. I don't remember where I picked up the fabric as it's been in my stash for quite awhile. I live for every May when my decorative apple tree blooms, so I've included some pictures of me celebrating it's beauty. Apparently comfort= menswear today. I made these @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans for Matt but they weren’t the right fit. They’re too big for me but that makes them more comfortable (obv need a belt) and the pockets are so deep! Paired with my #newcastlecardigan. The jeans have no mods and honestly they are wonderful (I don’t even mind the crotch bulge - more room! 😆) For the cardigan, I sewed for my bust and waist size and chopped the length of the bodice so it doesn’t sit at my fuller hips. #sewmenswearforeveryone

I finished my first full year of garment sewing this year, with four of my 2024 #MakeNine completed, and 19 items completed total. It was interesting to look back at what I wanted to get done vs. what I did get done, and why. A lot of it boiled down to the sheer amount of discovery that happened over the year -- so many new patterns, projects, ideas, and contests (and skills gained!). Most of what didn't get done in 2024 is stuff that I'd still like to do, so I'm keeping it on my list for 2025. 1: Finish One UFO I have 14 UFOs (UnFinished Objects) left in my queue. 2: #Nadelmäuschen by #Pattydoo I am in dire need of some pattern weights, and these mice would be a super cute way to use up scraps. 3: #BernieBeltBag by #FridayPatternCompany A carry-over from last year's list. 4: #JetSetBra by #SewBusty This bra pattern released during the year, and I'm swapping out the previous bra pattern for this. I think it'll be the perfect basic bra. 5: #RendezvousJacket by #TuppenceHapenny Ideally I'll get two of these made this year -- I have big plans for my dream jacket out of upcycled leather. However, I want to finish a wearable muslin first, so I can really dial in the fit (and all those other things you don't expect, but only discover after wearing something a couple times). 6: #QuadraJeans by #ThreadTheory I picked this pattern up as a "someday snack". Next to getting the perfect fit, I swear the zipper fly is one of the trickiest parts of sewing jeans! I’m working on my handmade denim using the Thread Theory Quadra Jeans pattern, and whew—this part always makes me pause and take a deep breath. It’s one of those sewing steps where precision really matters, but once it’s in place… it’s so satisfying. Zipper fly tips I’ve learned: ✔ Baste everything first ✔ Press like your life depends on it ✔ Trust the process—it looks weird until it doesn’t ✔ Don’t rush the topstitching! The second project I finished for #wholefabric30challenge is another pair of jeans, this one a surprise Christmas gift for my partner. I made them using the @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans pattern with absolutely no modifications, which is just rude. (Don’t mind me, I’m just jealous) Made with a Japanese stretch denim, these wound up being so soft and wearable that if there were any chance in all the hells known to mankind that these would fit me, they wouldn’t belong to my partner for long. But alas, I do love him enough to let him have them. Finished on the 23rd, these just barely made it under the tree before they came out again. The pockets are made out of a quilting cotton that I previously used to make myself a shirt. I’m really proud of these. Just don’t look too closey at the buttonhole. Even though we’re very different sizes, the Japanese denim was so narrow that these used the same about 3 m of denim plus 50cm of pocketing, bringing me up to 7/30 on the challenge. #sewistsofinstagram #imakeclothes #postapocalypticlifeskill

🪡 2023: The Projects That Got Away - Part 3 . Over the next few days, I'm planning to share a few things I made this year which, for one reason or other, didn't make it to Instagram sooner. Some are gifts I couldn't share at the time; some I haven't managed to photograph 'properly'; some I'm not as happy with as I could be. But they're all things I made, and which reflect the cadence of my 2023. . First up today: Challenging trousers (which IS a category of its own, I assure you)! . 🪡 A pair of @modern_sewing_co #msworkertrousers in burgundy drill from @fabworksmillshop! These took me 3 months - not because they were especially hard, but because making trousers to fit your body means acquainting yourself with all the intricacies of your own size and shape, and sometimes that requires summoning up all the fortitude you can muster. . I used @ithacamaven's #topdowncenterout method to fit these - it worked really well, with the only errors being the result of my own fumblings (it's v hard to scrutinise your own arse in a mirror, you know). I've got a bit of extra fabric under the back waistband, but it disappears on sitting down, so I'd be loath to tweak it too much in future versions in case I over-fit them. . The pattern itself is good, although I found the fly construction notes unclear in places. I don't exactly feel a million dollars in the finished trousers, but they've been a real wardrobe staple this year so I think I may need more pairs. . 🪡 Another pair of @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans for @most_magical_mike, in lovely @fabricgodmother denim! The purple pair I made last year are his best-fitting pair of jeans (you BET that feels good 😎), so I made another pair with the same measurements and tweaks, adding length to the legs and height to the rise and rivets for extra sturdiness. . I love this pattern so much - it's really taken the fear out of trouser construction for me. Made some silly mistakes with the fly, like forgetting to attach one size of the zip and only realising once I’d top stitched the fly and was beginning to attach the waistband… 🤦🏻♂️ But we won’t talk about that. I’ve got all the pieces laid out for my Quadra Jeans by thread theory designs, and yes, I took the time to get every grainline perfectly aligned. I’ve seen people say it doesn’t matter for jeans, but listen… I’m a Virgo. Precision matters. Clean cuts, squared lines, no regrets. My love turned 30 and I wanted to make him a special outfit to wear for his birthday and he looks great in it! I first made him a pair of jeans - my first time making men's jeans and I used the @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans. I used the Palmer-Pletsch tissue fitting method to get the perfect fit and if you haven't tried it for pants I really recommend it! And it eliminates the need to make a muslin 😉. The major lesson learned is that a lighter weight denim like this 10 oz laundered denim from @blackbirdfabrics can relax a LOT - I ended up having to take in the waist after he wore them for a couple of days. Next I made another @helens__closet #cameronbuttonup in a plaid linen from @stonemountainfabric. I've made this one before but I feel like I up my placket game with practice every time. I also somewhat managed to match the plaids in front. Finally he's wearing a #jacksontee - one of many I've made him. As much as I love sewing for myself I find menswear to be a really fun challenge!

Had such a fabulous weekend seeing people at #brisbanefrocktails, that I just had to wear my #memade outfit again for the first Spring day in the office. The fabric was a great weight to hold a pointy collar, just needed to make sure of the flower placement. Very happy with the colour matching the heart of the flower on the shirt with the orange corduroy pants. Okay, real talk: a waistband can make or break a pair of jeans—even if you’ve nailed the fit and topstitching. I forgot to snap more photos of this step (oops!), but trust me—an uneven, bulky, or poorly sewn waistband will throw the whole look off. Ask me how I know… I’m working through the Thread Theory Quadra Jeans pattern, and while I love how it’s coming together, that waistband took patience. Pressing is key, topstitching needs precision, and don’t even get me started on making sure everything lines up just right! Also: belt loops. They might seem like a small detail, but they’re deceptively fiddly. All those layers of denim? Make sure your machine can power through the bulk—especially where loops meet seam allowances. Hot tip: Hammer those thick seams flat before stitching. Your needle will thank you. What you see here is a serious case of long, lean leg syndrome. A certain quite tall family member has had some health challenges that have resulted in weight loss. We were at the point of not being able to find RTW jeans that were both small enough in the waist while still long enough in the leg. I proposed a custom alternative and, believe me, there were smiles on this young man's face. I absolutely cannot recommend the #quadrajeans by @threadtheorydesigns enough! I definitely had some struggles along the way, but that was purely due to machine issues as I got used to some pretty bulky seams. I used a vintage machine for the topstitching and once I got the tension figured out it was awesome. I have decided that I need to pick up a rubber mallet and chunk of wood to keep in my sewing room for future jeans making projects 😊. This pair was made using a non-stretch 10 oz denim from @fabricland.canada , which was great, but I also have plans to see what else the internet has to offer from Canada's selection of fabric sources. Don't you just love his choice of pocket design ❤️? Okay, real talk: a waistband can make or break a pair of jeans—even if you’ve nailed the fit and topstitching. I forgot to snap more photos of this step (oops!), but trust me—an uneven, bulky, or poorly sewn waistband will throw the whole look off. Ask me how I know… I’m working through the Thread Theory Quadra Jeans pattern, and while I love how it’s coming together, that waistband took patience. Pressing is key, topstitching needs precision, and don’t even get me started on making sure everything lines up just right! Also: belt loops. They might seem like a small detail, but they’re deceptively fiddly. All those layers of denim? Make sure your machine can power through the bulk—especially where loops meet seam allowances. Hot tip: Hammer those thick seams flat before stitching. Your needle will thank you. Usually I’m one of the most colourful on the train into work, but with the sea of colour at #melbournefrocktails2024, decided on black and white #unikko shirt and Dr Martens inspired jeans. Lily joined me for this year’s Frocktails in her own #memade outfit, with only a little help from her Dad. What a lovely experience to be able to share the joys of making and the sewing community with her. The shirt is a #simplicity3883, with a bigger collar, French front hack and no pockets. The jeans are #quadrajeans, with an extra wide leg, then hand top stitched with a wax thread. Stabbed myself 5 times with the awl but super happy with the results. We had to get a photo out the front of the store on the way home. Here is my make nine for 2023. I completed all my planned sewing projects, the only one I didn’t finish is the knitting. If I’m honest, I haven’t picked up my needles for months, I’ve really gone off knitting and I’m not sure why. 1. Pink denim jacket of dreams - the #itchtostitchatenasjacket from @itchtostitch ✅ 2. Apparently comfort= menswear today. I made these @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans for Matt but they weren’t the right fit. They’re too big for me but that makes them more comfortable (obv need a belt) and the pockets are so deep! Paired with my #newcastlecardigan. The jeans have no mods and honestly they are wonderful (I don’t even mind the crotch bulge - more room! 😆) For the cardigan, I sewed for my bust and waist size and chopped the length of the bodice so it doesn’t sit at my fuller hips. #sewmenswearforeveryone

So here’s my #makenine2023 1. Brought forward from 2022 is the atenas denim jacket from @itchtostitch It’s actually happening this year, I’ve cut it out already (in pink denim!) #itchtostitchatenasjacket 2. For Xmas Mr Minigems bought me some quilted fabric and a pattern to make a gilet. I hope mine won’t look as appalling as the one on the pattern envelope! 🤞 3. A dress - either the #nelldress from @thedressmakerscloset or #laundrydayteedress @lovenotions (or more likely, both!) 4. Cropped jeans. My favourite RTW pair are nearly worn through so I’m going to attempt to copy them. 😳 5. A pair of #quadrajeans @threadtheorydesigns for Mr Minigems (I’ve made these before so no fit challenges here) 6. When I did #memademay I decided this top needed a refashion as I don’t wear it. I found a bit more of the fabric in my stash so I have enough to work with. And then I did nothing more. So this year I’m actually going to refashion it somehow or cut it up and reuse the fabric to make something else. 7. I ordered this Xmas fabric in the post Xmas sale to make sweatshirts for Mr Minigems and my son for next year. 8. Fresh from the success of Xmas gift bags, I’m going to make some more but for birthday gifting. 9. I’m going to finish knitting this cardigan. It’s a long way off completion if I’m honest but I’ll do my best. This year I’m trying something different and only including projects for my husband in my make nine plans. Yesterday I finished my third pair of Quadra jeans for hubby. This time the request was for a grey pair with purple topstitching. Over the three pairs I’ve made we’ve refined the fit so they are perfect on him. Evidence of sewing with a few cat pics thrown in! I have been sewing off and on over the last few months, but I have had little motivation to post about anything. But, here's a go at it! Pictured is my favorite and most recent knit item, the #noviceslipover by @petiteknit. I used one of the nightshades from Harrisville yarns held with alpaca lace. I wear this regularly as it's a great layering piece. I have fallen to the #honeygirltee craze and have sewn 3 crew necks in pointelle from @lyricalfabrics. They have quickly become a TNT! I finally sewed jeans for someone else! My husband was in need of some new pants. These are the @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans lengthened 3 inches, but he actually didn't really need the length although he's 6'4". Future pairs may include a flat seat adjustment. Otherwise, they fit great! The fabric is from the makers' resale site. Last but not least is the new #gsreefsweatshirt Lululemon look alike from @greenstyle_patterns . This was a fun sew, and it's super comfortable! I didn't have the right size zipper, so it's a little different in the zip, but otherwise, it was a fairly straightforward sew. It did take some time, but I love projects that require me to slow down and really get into the process. The fabric is French terry with matching ribbing from @iseefabric If you couldn't tell, I have been embracing comfort in much of what I have been sewing lately. I used to wear a lot of dresses for work but that's been replaced for jeans and layers. Love the way this lilac corduroy from the @wearethefabricstore catches the light and appears to change colour in each photo. Finished the #quadrajeans at 11pm the night before my work Christmas party, then decided that I really needed a waistcoat to make it a #corduroycocktail outfit. Didn’t have a pattern or a waistcoat to go off, so I used a Tshirt to get a rough sizing, then cut the fabric free hand. Day three and the @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans are complete! Made some silly mistakes with the fly, like forgetting to attach one size of the zip and only realising once I’d top stitched the fly and was beginning to attach the waistband… 🤦🏻♂️ But we won’t talk about that. I love this man 😍 He is wearing #quadrajeans from @threadtheorydesigns in Japanese popcorn denim from @blackbirdfabrics I added an inch to the rise and forgot to raise the pocket placement so they’re a bit low but he said it’s fine lol The last couple of photos were taken fresh off the machine. I have since shorten the hem by an inch.
