Today I changed it up and started working on this Qualicum Bag from @threadtheorydesigns. Y’all, this isn’t easy. I feel like I’m missing instructions when I read patterns that aren’t quilt patterns. Thank goodness I’ll doing this test bag first before I do the real one because I’m learning things and making the mistakes on this one before I do the real one. Ignore the pillow inside the bag, I needed something to help stand it up to take the picture. Hello new bag! I've had the week off work this week and spent most of my time sewing. Over the past 2 days I've been making this @threadtheorydesigns #qualicumbag which has been on my to-sew list since it was released. I made the carry-all version which has a good amount of internal and external pockets. I have loved making this although my sewing machine did not - 6 layers of faux suede is hard work for a domestic machine. I made a huge error in that I completely missed the step on attaching the shoulder straps but in reality I'm unlikely to use them much if they are attached as I'm much more of a cross-body strap kinda gal. I should have also used a more sturdy interfacing for the contrast fabric. The bag is a lot bigger than I anticipated so it's most likely going to be used as an overnight bag rather than an everyday bag. It does however fit my laptop with loads of room so it will be handy for work when I'm able to go back to the office. The laptop bag version of our new Qualicum Bag pattern includes a nice padded sleeve for your laptop and full interfacing or padding on the exterior of the bag for added structure. The instructions are really in-depth about pairing your interfacing with your material to create professional results as this is where I found my early bag making attempts fell short. This sample has been interfaced with fusible fleece. I love this stabilizer because it can add structure to light canvases or heavier materials without adding bulk or density...making the bag very nice to sew on any domestic machine! #qualicumbag #fusiblefleece

Something different... I made a laptop bag! It’s the #threadtheory #qualicumbag. Miraculously I found all the supplies from my stash except for the zipper and hardware which I ordered from #emmalinebags. The bag is a viscose backed faux leather and a tweedy wool blend twill both from #emmaonesock. I used Pelion fusible fleece on the tweed and a pro weft fusible for the faux leather. The lining and laptop sleeve fabrics are from from quilting fabrics I had on hand. Instead of sewing the handles I used cotton webbing/strapping. This pattern is well drafted and everything lined up perfectly. Of course I chose the view with the most pieces. I love that it has an additional inner zip pocket, a pocket outside for my cell or keys and a slot that holds my water bottle. The bag can also accommodate a cross body strap which I haven’t decided yet if I will need but I added the D rings just in case.

If I'm honest it was rather a labour of love and during the sewing process kept on dreaming about all those garment patterns that I wanted to make for myself. In all 27 pattern pieces, many of which needed to be cut out in lining and interfacing as well. The pattern does give you a simplified option with fewer pockets and other short cuts which can be done to make this an easier sew and certainly next time I'll probably use webbing for the handles and D ring holders. My daughter loves the bag and thinks that it is well designed and functional. There is a padded compartment for her laptop and numerous other pockets both internal and external.I found the pattern instructions to be detailed and well explained, but lost the will to live when cutting it out. Tada! 💥 The Qualicum Bag has landed. Let me introduce you to the Carry-all variation first: It can be sewn in a wide range of medium weight materials (my favourite being canvas...I really want to make this version in the waxed canvas that @blackbirdfabrics has in stock right now!). It is fully lined, partially interfaced for added structure where it most matters, and includes two inner elasticated pockets and an inner zipper pocket. The best feature on this bag is the recessed top zipper! It’s a nifty bit of sewing magic that creates a streamline exterior (no flappy top zipper) with the security and functionality of a fully closed interior. This is the variation that I use as my diaper bag but it makes a great carry-on, small weekender or large daily tote. More posts are coming later today to introduce the other variations included within this pattern and to show you the bag in action! The third and final variation included in the Qualicum Bag pattern is a quick market tote which looks aesthetically similar to the other two bag variations but is a MILLION times faster to sew. I wanted this bag to feel a little more special than your average tote (hence keeping some of the exterior pockets and including a full lining) but be as FAST as possible to make. I’m imagining it sewn up in small batches so you can use it as a gift and reusable ‘wrapping paper’ this Christmas! It would look striking in cork, waxed canvas, holiday quilting cotton, or even a light linen if you pair the weight of your zipper well with your fabric (the instructions remind you to do so!). Also, just a heads up that we have a very small stock of hardware kits and bag labels (both leather and metal) in the shop that won’t be around much longer judging by how many of you have snagged them on launch day! Ta Dah! Yes it's 1 am, but I made a bag! Presenting the Qualicum Bag from @threadtheorydesigns I needed a bag for work that was sturdy, water resistant and big enough for all my teacher things. I adapted this pattern by removing the elastic pocket inside and replacing it with something more functional for myself. 🥳 So happy that I was able to make something to suit my needs. New bag! The carry all option of the @threadtheorydesigns Qualicum Bag. Still to do: I couldn’t find a slider, so the cross-body strap will happen later. The top stitching around the top of the bag is garbage (my machine got mad), and I may or may not redo it.
