This is a very belated post of one of Dom’s Christmas presents. I decided to try and make most of my gifts this year, which I would say was overall a success though I didn’t really give myself enough time and it was a little stressful to say the least. Next year I’ll do better (maybe). This is the @threadtheorydesigns #carmanahsweater made in Rune Sherpa fleece from @fabricgodmother it’s actually a stretch pattern but I sized up and it came out fine. This fabric is (as you can probably imagine) very tricky to work with - the fluffy bits extend over the edge of the fabric and make cutting/stitching accurately a challenge but I got there in the end. The setting is a ski trip to Andorra we went on with some friends in January. We learnt to ski last year and this is the second trip we’ve been on. I do think having some success after taking up sewing as a grown up has encouraged me to try other new things and expect if I persevere at them eventually I’ll be passable. It’s actually probably worked out for the skiing but having somewhat less positive results with learning French 🇫🇷 and the violin 🎻. What a surprising win. I wanted a half-zip sweater but didn't want to buy another pattern so I looked through all the hoodie/sweatshirt patterns I have and realized that Carmanh sweater by Thread Theory had an option I was looking for. It's a men's pattern, but I think it works. When I started cutting the fabric I realized I didn't have enough for a hem band and was planning to go get some grey ribbing somewhere. But I was keen to start sewing and to my delight when I put it all together it turned out to be long enough without the band. I just hemmed it by 1.5 inch and I absolutely love how it looks and fits. My only complaint about the pattern is that the seam allowance is 5/8" which is a bit too much for a knit garment and felt waistful. Otherwise - perfection. Last night I promised I’d post photos of Hope Cove in the morning and I managed to get these two from our hotel room and then immediately a thick sea mist rolled swiftly in, so we set off home. These views are facing west towards Plymouth but once we drove around the corner and onto the south facing beach at Slapton, the sun was burning off the mist and creating a beautiful and ethereal scene which you can swipe to see. Our gig went well and we’ve been booked for next December! I literally just finished Mr T’s sweater hence this late post. It was 15oC here today so unusually, we could stand on the beach without coats etc. Both in memades. I love trees! I was born in a house surrounded by woods, then moved to an old mill in the woods aged 6 and spent much of my childhood running barefoot in the woods playing by myself and with my black Labrador Bess. If only there were more houses built in woodland…. Our new bungalow will be within easy walking distance of woods, so that makes me happy. Still no move date, but despite another hiccup I think we’re getting closer to getting a date. Wearing my @paper_theory Olya Shirt in linen purchased at a Portuguese market a few years ago now and my well-worn M&Mills Heroine jeans which were too big after losing over 28lbs earlier this year. In fact all of my jeans were too big, but I didn’t fancy making a couple more pairs, so I washed them on a long 60oC wash (2 hours) then tumble dried them at the hottest temperature and they fit perfectly now. I thought they would stretch out again with wear but neither have! Mr T is wearing his usual favourite @threadtheorydesigns Jedediah Pants & Carmanah Sweater and M&Mills Allstate shirt. These woods are up on the edge of Dartmoor near Ashburton and we’re at a 40th wedding anniversary party of our besties later. A quick change will be in order. 🎁 Birthday top 🎁 I’m celebrating my lovely husband James today as it’s his birthday. He’d asked for a fleecey zip top (like those gorgeous Passenger ones) so I ordered some fabric and got to work. I used the @threadtheorydesigns Carmanah pattern, although it is slightly hacked as after I’d ordered it I realised I wanted the contrast yoke to come further down the top than the quarter zip view allowed for. So I messed about with the yoke and body pieces to bring the zip and yoke further down. I also omitted the hemband on the body, partly because I didn’t have enough ribbing, and partly because it actually didn’t need it. When I mentioned to James that the back of the Sherpa fabric might be slightly scratchy, he asked for a lining (just to make it trickier 😂) so I constructed the front yoke differently to the instructions, in order to make it as neat as I could get it with the lining. I think I bodged it together a bit, but I’m pleased with the end result. The pocket was also an addition that I made up. All in all it was definitely a challenge but I’m so pleased with the finished top! I’ve got loads of fabric left over so I might end up with a matching one 😂 There are definitely some parts that are not perfect (I’ve included a photo of some very messy seams where my overlocker struggled with the sheer bulk of the fabric) but James is happy and so am I. Mr T is extremely happy with his new @threadtheorydesigns #carmanahsweater in fleece back sweatshirt fabric bought on our wonderful holiday in Norfolk and Cambridge last summer from the lovely @backstitchshop. He’d forgotten about choosing it, so it was a nice surprise. The sun is setting through our lattice fence, hence what looks like a pattern in the fabric. He loves the zipper and the fact it has a zipper guard on the collar. Very clever design bi just wish their instructions were much clearer and in bigger print! There was no video sew-along with this one. It was all very simple until the very last stage of sewing the second layer of the collar. It's somebody's birthday so I made him this tencel merino french terry sweater! Fabric is from @wearethefabricstore with a shoulder yoke of merino jersey (overlaid over the sweat) and a freaking awesome stay rad patch from eBay! The pattern is the #carmanahsweater by @threadtheorydesigns which I had high hopes for after making the Fairfield Button Up and has all the makings of being a brilliant pattern - it ended beautifully and super cool, great details etc, but if I'm honest it feels like it needs some work or further pattern testing in the instructions and images. We had so much fun ice dying this #carmanahsweater by @threadtheorydesigns on the weekend. This is Liam's birthday present but I couldn't find the right colour of pink fleece so I bought some oatmeal-coloured fleece and used a black scrap for the colour blocking. All the fabric and the kitty patch where from @nelson_stitch_lab .We tried ice dying with liquid rit dye a while ago but it wasn't that great so this time I ordered some procion dye and soda ash and it worked beautifully. The colours are so bright and the patterns are super cool don't you think? We also dyed a RTW t-shirt and some extra fleece which I'm hoping to make a colour-blocked sweater for myself. I think we will do this again as it's so easy and the results are unique. 🎁 Birthday top 🎁 I’m celebrating my lovely husband James today as it’s his birthday. He’d asked for a fleecey zip top (like those gorgeous Passenger ones) so I ordered some fabric and got to work. I used the @threadtheorydesigns Carmanah pattern, although it is slightly hacked as after I’d ordered it I realised I wanted the contrast yoke to come further down the top than the quarter zip view allowed for. So I messed about with the yoke and body pieces to bring the zip and yoke further down. I also omitted the hemband on the body, partly because I didn’t have enough ribbing, and partly because it actually didn’t need it. When I mentioned to James that the back of the Sherpa fabric might be slightly scratchy, he asked for a lining (just to make it trickier 😂) so I constructed the front yoke differently to the instructions, in order to make it as neat as I could get it with the lining. I think I bodged it together a bit, but I’m pleased with the end result. The pocket was also an addition that I made up. All in all it was definitely a challenge but I’m so pleased with the finished top! I’ve got loads of fabric left over so I might end up with a matching one 😂 There are definitely some parts that are not perfect (I’ve included a photo of some very messy seams where my overlocker struggled with the sheer bulk of the fabric) but James is happy and so am I. What a surprising win. I wanted a half-zip sweater but didn't want to buy another pattern so I looked through all the hoodie/sweatshirt patterns I have and realized that Carmanh sweater by Thread Theory had an option I was looking for. It's a men's pattern, but I think it works. When I started cutting the fabric I realized I didn't have enough for a hem band and was planning to go get some grey ribbing somewhere. But I was keen to start sewing and to my delight when I put it all together it turned out to be long enough without the band. I just hemmed it by 1.5 inch and I absolutely love how it looks and fits. My only complaint about the pattern is that the seam allowance is 5/8" which is a bit too much for a knit garment and felt waistful. Otherwise - perfection. Last night I promised I’d post photos of Hope Cove in the morning and I managed to get these two from our hotel room and then immediately a thick sea mist rolled swiftly in, so we set off home. These views are facing west towards Plymouth but once we drove around the corner and onto the south facing beach at Slapton, the sun was burning off the mist and creating a beautiful and ethereal scene which you can swipe to see. Our gig went well and we’ve been booked for next December! I literally just finished Mr T’s sweater hence this late post. It was 15oC here today so unusually, we could stand on the beach without coats etc. Both in memades. I love trees! I was born in a house surrounded by woods, then moved to an old mill in the woods aged 6 and spent much of my childhood running barefoot in the woods playing by myself and with my black Labrador Bess. If only there were more houses built in woodland…. Our new bungalow will be within easy walking distance of woods, so that makes me happy. Still no move date, but despite another hiccup I think we’re getting closer to getting a date. Wearing my @paper_theory Olya Shirt in linen purchased at a Portuguese market a few years ago now and my well-worn M&Mills Heroine jeans which were too big after losing over 28lbs earlier this year. In fact all of my jeans were too big, but I didn’t fancy making a couple more pairs, so I washed them on a long 60oC wash (2 hours) then tumble dried them at the hottest temperature and they fit perfectly now. I thought they would stretch out again with wear but neither have! Mr T is wearing his usual favourite @threadtheorydesigns Jedediah Pants & Carmanah Sweater and M&Mills Allstate shirt. These woods are up on the edge of Dartmoor near Ashburton and we’re at a 40th wedding anniversary party of our besties later. A quick change will be in order. Mr T is extremely happy with his new @threadtheorydesigns #carmanahsweater in fleece back sweatshirt fabric bought on our wonderful holiday in Norfolk and Cambridge last summer from the lovely @backstitchshop. He’d forgotten about choosing it, so it was a nice surprise. The sun is setting through our lattice fence, hence what looks like a pattern in the fabric. He loves the zipper and the fact it has a zipper guard on the collar. Very clever design bi just wish their instructions were much clearer and in bigger print! There was no video sew-along with this one. It was all very simple until the very last stage of sewing the second layer of the collar. It's somebody's birthday so I made him this tencel merino french terry sweater! Fabric is from @wearethefabricstore with a shoulder yoke of merino jersey (overlaid over the sweat) and a freaking awesome stay rad patch from eBay! The pattern is the #carmanahsweater by @threadtheorydesigns which I had high hopes for after making the Fairfield Button Up and has all the makings of being a brilliant pattern - it ended beautifully and super cool, great details etc, but if I'm honest it feels like it needs some work or further pattern testing in the instructions and images. This pullover is arguably the coolest garment I’ve ever sewn. It was also one of the most aggravating to make! There were a couple of forces coming together to make this a challenging project. The #sinclairapollo has the set-in sleeve style I needed and #carmanahsweater has the half-zip style neck that I needed (and I already had both patterns), so I hacked the Apollo using the Carmanah neck opening, etc. It was a bit of an unholy mess, but I got there in the end and it looks awesome. Benji loves it and wears it all the time, so that’s a firm win in my books! This is a very belated post of one of Dom’s Christmas presents. I decided to try and make most of my gifts this year, which I would say was overall a success though I didn’t really give myself enough time and it was a little stressful to say the least. Next year I’ll do better (maybe). This is the @threadtheorydesigns #carmanahsweater made in Rune Sherpa fleece from @fabricgodmother it’s actually a stretch pattern but I sized up and it came out fine. This fabric is (as you can probably imagine) very tricky to work with - the fluffy bits extend over the edge of the fabric and make cutting/stitching accurately a challenge but I got there in the end. The setting is a ski trip to Andorra we went on with some friends in January. We learnt to ski last year and this is the second trip we’ve been on. I do think having some success after taking up sewing as a grown up has encouraged me to try other new things and expect if I persevere at them eventually I’ll be passable. It’s actually probably worked out for the skiing but having somewhat less positive results with learning French 🇫🇷 and the violin 🎻. The instructions for the collar and zip insertion were so confusing so I freestyled it in the end.
