A lovely Saturday in my sewing studio … felt like I had made enough headway with my #freemotionquilting to allow my self a little distraction to get a dressmaking idea out of my head. I was given this lovely #sarifabric by my friend @sandraadee.a … and I have thought, dreamed and finally decided that it really wanted to be a dress … was excited to see Lindy @stokxpatterns do a dress version of her #stokxoblong using a border print and it occurred to me that this would work for a sari fabric that has the typical gold border is of course a border print … then I brought this lovely Indian embroidered ribbon yesterday that I though would lift the sari into my own eccentric eclectic style … Rose has obliged by allowing me to try ideas to see what grabs me … think the version where the ribbon wraps up to the shoulders works for me. … thinking to take the ribbon round the back and then insert some elastic in the middle back to pull it close to my body. Love the effect of this frillneck lizard / Elizabethan frill vibe collar … achieved by stitching the border together from the bust point to waist and gathering to fit the excess to the back piece by first joining the shoulders … I used this narrow webbing to cover and neaten the seam ( I am claiming this as my own invention). I have ideas for hidden invisible pockets hanging from the waist using this ribbon as support … let’s see how this develops as I treating this like one of my pieces of art and developing it as I go … started the day by completing my end of the quilting bargain … then left my #qzonehoopframe set up with my #quinque15r set up for tomorrow’s quilting goal of forested hills … another warm day over 30 deg C so wearing one of my favourite warm weather #givenachancedress @decades_of_style this one in a combination of a fabulous #africanwaxprint combination with a black and white patchwork fabric print (this innovative oragami fold yoke really shows of a geometric strip print) … #sewover50 #sewover50mar #stokxpatternsfanclub

Another blissful day in my sewing room … feeling a little bit tropical (it’s a warm summer’s day) wearing an old (7 years? ) but favourite stay at home and sew summer dress … actually made from a cotton #batiksarong … pattern is the #givenachancedress dress from @decades_of_style … I enjoy the interesting origami neckline ( I used some coordinating patchwork cotton) and the fact the pattern works quite well on this narrow width fabric! The “ Queen” has an obvious tide mark… I have finished all the sky quilting (next really is sea) … I am working from top to bottom. This is an important stage to take it and hang it somewhere I can admire it but also perhaps think of what else needs doing. My new #ikea big curtain rail with hooks is so much more convenient than my previous process! I also have spent a while cutting out and sewing some more giant leaves for my epic snakes and ladders quilt border… think I might have enough now… since this is a recycled and reused quilt I am also making sure to use as much of the offcuts as possible. I have also cut some 5” inner border strips and worked out the words I want #appliqué on them (I have pinned the words with their relevant direction on to the borders) . I was going to patchwork them but have decided I can use my evening and travel time to hand stitch and save my machine time for other sets of the project! I made a dress! IKEA fabric and Essex Linen. These were the fabrics that I managed to have good yardage for in my house and luckily they go together nicely! @decades_of_style #givenachancedress The pattern was easy and definitely doable in less than a day.

First make of the new year and it’s a #givenachancedress from @decades_of_style made from a #batik panel brought back from Thailand by @callumhazell51 and @rachclewer and given to me as a Christmas gift. I used some moda fabric from @traceysdiscountfabric for the yoke which is a really interesting origami design. Many think to love about this pattern ...great no waste pattern that needs little fabric for the main part of the dress and then you can have fun finding some special patchwork fabric to coordinate (and this is the best fabric to use for the yoke as you need something with body that presses well). Going through my remnant collection for new ideas, came up with this combination. Pau Hana.🍸As an aside, this dress was made with a true antique, a hand operated Singer 28 sewing machine.(shown in earlier posts). Was relaxing at a teeny cabin away from electricity recently. Using the machine was easy but I sure missed my iron. The pattern is very simple to make and an easy to wear everyday style. Good for smaller lengths of yardage too. #givenachancedress by @decades_of_style

#givenachancedress pattern from @decades_of_style . I have made this a few times now. Easy to make and wear. Only requires careful thought in fabric choice. A stripe or contrast for the yoke is best. If none is found, a machine stitch pattern can be used to make your own contrasting fabric (picture 3). My 50's Elna did this little design. Cotton fabric from #fabricmarthawaii

Do you ever get your ass handed to you by your sewing machine? Like maybe the universe is trying to tell you to go back to knitting? This gorgeous Nani Iro double gauze is the first "fancy" fabric I've invested in, paired with a gorgeous linen... seemed perfect for this super simple Decades of Style dress pattern. Well, this whole project has been a struggle from the get go, I had to take the yoke apart four times to get it right, then I serged too wide finishing the seams, resulting in visible stitches in the front (I'm sure no one else would notice it, but I see it!) Then I used too thick a fabric for the pocket lining. Finally got it together and it's way longer than I expected and the pattern placement is completely off. I have to hem up the best of the print and I'm left with this big blank space with an unflattering swoosh right across the midriff. I'm sure everyone has those projects where nothing seems to go right -- but why did it have to be THIS one? Nevermind, I'm still going to finish it and wear the hell out of it! #imakemyclothes #lostmysewjo #naniiro #decadesofstyle #givenachancedress

Currently working on the inner border … first one says … take the chance .. a relaxing #needleturnapplique … so easy compared to tiny jigsaw 🧩 pieces on the “Queen” quilt. In other news I had two friends over for a sewing day and finished of the turning and pressing stage of the giant leaves. I made a dress! IKEA fabric and Essex Linen. These were the fabrics that I managed to have good yardage for in my house and luckily they go together nicely! @decades_of_style #givenachancedress The pattern was easy and definitely doable in less than a day.
