Overalls! I’ve never had overalls before. A bit of a pain to get in and out of but cute and comfortable to wear. Both fabrics bought at the same time @mulberrysilks last fall. I made the #patsyblouse very early this year and the #opheliaoveralls just recently. If I make overalls again I’d use traditional hardware on the straps rather than a button, so they’re easily adjustable. I did find them to be easy to fit. Fabrics are a dark teal cotton pincord and William Morris print cotton. Patterns are the #opheliaoveralls from @decades_of_style and #patsyblouse from #charmpatterns by @gertie18.

These are the 3rd pair of the Ophelia overalls I’ve made. This pair I eliminated the side patch pockets and meant to add traditional pockets but forgot 😩. 〰️ 〰️ This is not a size inclusive pattern as the hip size goes up to 52”. When last I enquired in 2022 they had no plans to expand. Happy Saturday! What are you up to this weekend? I’ll be finishing up a pair of #OpheliaOveralls and breaking out the bbq. Washout sashiko cloth is super versatile. It’s a bit thicker than quilt weight but not so heavy as canvas. It works for quilts, apparel, bags, home decor, and really anything you’d want to show off your stitching skills on! The print washes away in water leaving your hand stitching behind. Prices in tags are for quarter yard increments. Three bolts of cotton fabric are pictured. They are printed in water soluble ink with traditional sashiko stitch patterns.

I got the #opheliaoveralls pattern and this fun Cloud 9 canvas ages ago from #hartsfabric, but for various reasons only started sewing again this month — after a 20ish year break. I dislike exposed finishes, so not only did I fell all the seams but I also experimented with lined facings. What can you do with 6 pairs of old pants?! Make scrappy overalls! @therealsethrogen was throwing away a PILE of his old pants, and I made this #opheliaoveralls @decades_of_style and I’m in LOVE. I’ve never really been drawn to overalls until this pattern. I love how there are ties on the sides to cinch in the waist, and the fit was perfect right out of the pack! I did shorten it by 10cm though. I love that the waistline is so high and the pockets are so so functional. I added a beautiful label by @kylieandthemachine from their @claire__ritchie collection. The straps are a little wide for my overall buckles (a gift from my dear friend @little_clay_bird !) but because the length of them were just right, they are staying at the end and the skinniest part of the straps anyway. I did break 2 needles making this, as some of the existing joins on the old pants made some parts too thick to sew through. I’d still recommend this project to anyone. I made mine in the smallest size and the old pants were men’s size L or XL. It took 6 pairs and some piecing together because I mainly used the back legs due to some front darts. It was a lovely pattern, fairly quick and straight forward to sew. I’m already dreaming of my second pair!!

I found another dungarees pattern I love! This is the Ophelia Overalls from @decades_of_style , a pattern from their Decades Everyday collection. It has a straight wide legs, huge pockets and straps at the waist to snatch your silhouet. This is one of my absolute favorite patterns now! Don’t get me wrong, I still love the fun casual vibe of my Harlenes, but this just gives a whole different aesthetic. The shirt is drafted by myself. The fabrics are both available at @huis_van_katoen . The colour from the purplish corduroy is devine, the flannel from the shirt perfectly matches with it! And it’s always a pleasure to browse through the shop from Marlies, she has a few gorgeous gems in her shop! I ordered this #opheliaoveralls pattern about two years ago and got the fabric from @boltandspool about a year ago. It was somewhat intimidating as it has buttonholes 😩 A trip to Hicksville to see my Mom this weekend and quick refresher tutorial and we’re good to go! It’s good to get this make out of the fabric pile and into my closet.

I bought #Advance2795 sewing pattern (in PDF form, which I had printed online) from @beespokevintage after letting it languish in my cart forever. We know my love of all things boiler/jump/flight suit and all things WRAP. So. I used @moodfabrics Dark Gull Gray Herringbone Cotton Twill which has zero stretch and is not thick but very strong. Upfront: I did not choose a fully vintage/period accurate construction process. I added the yellow contrast fabric (leftover from the #opheliaoveralls ), I serged my seams and used contrast topstitching everywhere I could. I also interfaced the collar and sleeve cuffs and ended up skipping the shoulder pads as the fabric is so stiff they support themselves plenty. My serger hated this fabric because it is very densely woven and hard to pierce--and once you pierce it with the needle that hole is in there forever. Much was learned. I mocked it up for crotch depth but my mock up fabric was more different from the actual than I anticipated so the fit is also different. I suspect that after a few or 500 washes it will relax a lot (yes, of course I prewashed/dried my fabric, I am not a savage). I want to pleat the fullness into sleeves forever, now, it's so architectural and cool. The fabric stiffness means it's a bit challenging to take off and were I to do it again I would lengthen the crotch depth by 1.5-2 inches. I was not wild about how they had you do the collar but this is a garment intended to cover existing clothes, not be a fashion statement by itself. I am using it as the latter. I was 85% done and decided that the sleeves needed lengthening and the cuffs were too narrow so I recut all of that. This is why we buy extra fabric, kids. The 1940s assumed your ass knew how to SEW. I'm happy to report that I do, mostly, know that, but this is not trying to teach; it believes we have already learned. So, how do I like it? Mostly I do. It's a tad...hippy. But again, it's a coverall first and foremost. I may change the buttons/tab for cinching in the ankles at some point. Or not. Or just wash with a cup of salt 500 times. When you’ve made a bunch of quilts why not sew up a pair of overalls and a toaster sweater, oh, and add in a couple of whole cloth baby quilts. Palette is now cleansed! Because of my interesting condition, this year I have been making garments that accommodate for a changing waist circumference. The first, which I finished and started wearing this summer when my bump could still be mistaken for a big dinner, was the #opheliaoveralls by @decades_of_style. The picture was taken at about 25 weeks, and I’m now past 30 and still wearing them. I did make some minor adjustments to the pattern so they would fit longer: I chose the bigger of the sizes I was between, extended the tabs and straps for the side closure and lengthened the shoulder straps. I also put snaps on the shoulder straps and sewed the side closure snaps on horizontally rather than vertically for ease of adjustment. I also lengthened the legs a little so I could fold the hem up twice. Overall I really liked the pattern (apart from having to tape the printed pdf pages together) and thought it was worth all 100m of contrasting top stitching thread.
