Straight after the BB attempt, I fell back on one of my favorite bra patterns, the Marlborough. This one has maintained its status and continues to circulate in my studio and my wardrobe. It will be the second one I made for myself after the birth of my little girl. There's not much to say, it fits me before I had my girl, and it fit me after. I used to be a size 38C, now I'm a 38D. I've been obsessed with the idea of glorious blue underthings lately, making 2 blue bras back to back. First off the blocks is this cobalt lace bra, just awaiting a couple of pairs of matching knickers to complete the set. The scalloped galloon had caught my fancy when I first got the bug to make my own underwear. Then I got distracted by other makes and only recently rediscovered it during a reorg of my stash. This lace is sturdier than I would like, so I lined it with soft black bra tulle to ensure it is comfortable to wear. I used the scallops to create a pretty edging for the cradle, which also involved making it more of a longline style. The #OrangeLingerie #MarlboroughBra is a TNT pattern that gives me a pretty good fit straight out the pack. But with a few bras now under my belt, I felt it was time to improve my fitting game. I narrowed the set of the shoulder straps and the width across the upper cup, both by 6mm (1/4in). Strictly speaking my under band measurement is between a 34 and a 36 (UK sizing). As I was already deepening the back band by 20 mm (3/4 in) to better align with the scallops on the cradle, I decided to use the 36 band pattern, but reduced the width of each band piece by 5mm, taking out 10 mm (3/8 in) overall for a snugger fit The hardest thing to manage was ALL those lace and tulle pattern pieces that drifted off my cutting table at the slightest breath of air. I counted 19 excluding the back bands. Until everything was connected together I found it easiest to keep the right and left pieces in separate clear bags, pinning each lace segment to its corresponding tulle lining. I had more scraps: the last of silk I bought in 2021 in Greece and a smidge of lace from Amsterdam. I did buy the brown elastics for this one, so I could dive into my ‘70s vibe. Sometimes basic sewing is all you need… life is complicated, I’m overworked, end of the semester, grading, writing, an eval, my heart hurts…though, arranging scraps like puzzle pieces to fit the pattern, slow sewing small seams, refitting from body changes, and the humming of my machine are quite good at calming the soul and letting my overworking mind take a breather. These days I’m trying to be more conscious of balancing my time and myself. Same lace, same fabric, same patterns but different looks and slightly different sizes. I used to make toiles for lingerie and that helped me get to the rough size cup and bands in the beginning. At some point, I had to stop because the fabrics I used for the toile just didn't translate well in terms of fits for the final piece. Lingerie are so fitted that any change in stretch of the fabrics usually changes the fit in the final pieces. These days, I will make my toiles using good fabric straight away because the adjustment to the patterns are very minor and I know that anything that is a little too small on me will fit my mum really well. So here is the second set of undergarments for my new collection... I could not fit any of my pre baby body lingerie. All the previously made bras were too short and a cup too small. Anyway, it would be really sad if I didn't know how to sew my own cause lingerie is not cheap and even harder to get the size to fit right purchased from the store. Second attempt at the Marlborough bra from @orange_lingerie and it went much better! This time I split the bottom cup piece and added 1/4" to each piece following tutorials from Orange Lingerie and LizSews and the flat spot is eliminated 🎉 I still don't love the shape and in my 3rd iteration I'm planning on rounding the bottom cup more to get a rounder shape. I do really like the good coverage at the underarm on this bra though. Lace: AliExpress Tricot: Funny story I picked up a 5m+ piece of this at an op shop and only just realised what it was. Quite timely as my bra-making stash was running out of stable materials. Making good progress on my long line hack of the #orangelingerie #marlboroughbra. I used the #esplanadebra as a guide for extending the frame and band depth. The exterior fabric is a lovely stretch red lace from #newcrafthouse underlined with skin tone tulle (to counteract the stretch) and lined with a mix of red tulle (for the cups) and rigid nylon dernier (also in red) for the frame. I recently finished this Orange Lingerie Marlborough bra. I think I finally got the fit right 🎉💃 (this is a 36A (34 wire) with an increase to the back band of 1.5 inches - so a total increase of 3 inches to the back). I followed Liz Sews @liz_sews YouTube video on how to do a folded upper cup instead of elastic behind the lace as well as watching her Marlborough bra sew-along. I think this is the best fitting bra I have ever had. Most of the supplies for this bra are from @booby_traps and I also made a matching pair of Cloth Habit Watson briefs. #BRAugust2020 day 17: knit/lace. I love both, but I really love lace! 🥰 And at the moment I'm really loving two toned laces like this yellow and navy one from @mintfroglace. I especially love finding fun and creative ways to use up lace: for this set, I only had a metre. I started by cutting out the Ultimate Lace panties by @ohhhlulu (they really live up to their name!) and then had fun figuring out how to use the scraps to make a matching bra. I used the Marlborough bra from @orange_lingerie, and started with placing the lace on the upper cup, and bridge, then using the leftovers to add some lace detail to the back band as well. Success! And it fits! This is #theamandaalyssabra by #pinupgirlspatterns and I am so glad I made the #mysticbra right before this and had made the #marlboroughbra before, because I used construction techniques from both of those bras (such as adding seam tape to the foam cup so the seam can fold up when attaching the underwire and hiding the underwire channel under the upper band elastic). I also did the straps like the Mystic Bra. This one went so much more smoothly than the last one for several reasons. The practice on the first one helped, of course (this time I didn’t crush the cups), but the fabric I used over the cups wasn’t pilling as I was working with it like the last fabric was, so it just seems like a better quality fabric. I also used the regular angled foam cups and not the push up cups this time and I like those better. I also had the correct length underwire this time. What was also nice is that this pattern is designed to fit the foam cups from @bramakerssupply so no adjustments to the cup needed to be made. It fit perfectly! This is exactly the sort of supportive foam cup bra I have been wanting, so I am super excited to have a TNT t-shirt bra pattern now! 🧨

It hurts to say but as beautiful as this bra is, it is not a good fit. This is my first go at the Marlborough bra pattern by @orange_lingerie and yes you might ask why I used the good stuff for it but it was really a case of what I had on hand. I may try and recreate the combo one day when I get more of this gorgeous blush duoplex from @nelliejoans I had read that the Marlborough can run a bit 1990s Madonna but also had others rave so I finally gave it a go. Well, it definitely has some lift... I'm confident that I got the right size but really need more space in the bottom cup. My plan is to split the cup and see if that helps. Sizing note: this pattern is not very size inclusive. Also the pattern is split into 2 different groups of cup sizes you need to purchase separately. #BRAugust2020 day 17: knit/lace. I love both, but I really love lace! 🥰 And at the moment I'm really loving two toned laces like this yellow and navy one from @mintfroglace. I especially love finding fun and creative ways to use up lace: for this set, I only had a metre. I started by cutting out the Ultimate Lace panties by @ohhhlulu (they really live up to their name!) and then had fun figuring out how to use the scraps to make a matching bra. I used the Marlborough bra from @orange_lingerie, and started with placing the lace on the upper cup, and bridge, then using the leftovers to add some lace detail to the back band as well. I love how it turned out. A little lace goes a long way! .
