I made an autumnal set to add to my autumn wardrobe. One of my priorities this year is to use what I have before buying more and this set is a testament to that. The lace was purchased on sale from Backstreet Bargains last year and from memory cost me about $2.50 on clearance. The foam, elastics, rings and sliders, power mesh, hooks and eyes and bra tulle were all from my stash. The orange knit was leftover from another project, the blue spot tulle which was added to cover the powernet was harvested from a new unworn pair of underwear from rtw set that I didn’t like and the underwires were upcycled from an old bra. Oh and the bow I think was a gift with purchase from way back. This was a pretty much cobbled together set from what I had. The third set of my new lingerie collection. I need a few more for every day wear so expect more lingerie posts. I'm planning to remake a lot of my favourite patterns with some of the scrap fabric from the stash. My plan is to remake all my favourite patterns but in my current size. I kept getting told I will go back to my previous size after a few years. It's been over 2 years now and I am accepting of my new body shape so it's no biggie to let go of my old wardrobe and start a new and fresh one... A little late on my #makenine for 2025. While I’ve got plenty of patterns I want to make, this year I’m focusing strongly on reducing my stash. Even though my 10 piece fabric limit didn’t stick last year, I’m going to try again this year. I also has far lass time to sew last year and home to carve out some more time in 2025. Thought trying out a new pattern was the best way to go back to sewing lingerie 😁 Boylston Bra by @orange_lingerie was in my basket ever since I saw a denim version of it on the designer’s IG. I’m really pleased with my choice and rather happy with the result 😅 It took three test runs to get the cup size right—pattern size recommendations didn’t work for me, but, after sizing up twice, the final version is 👌. I used scuba for the main fabric, which looks great (IMO), but comes with its own challenges—like bulky seams and getting crisp folds. Things that helped me: a lot of trimming seam allowances, pressing folds with steam and a clapper to help them hold, topstitching and patience in my slow pace 😋 I lengthened the back band pieces slightly to account for the different stretch of scuba vs. powermesh, which was totally based on “eyeball science”. All in all, I really love how this turned out and will definitely be making more (because my MO still is: get the fit then get to play). As to pattern itself—it’s beautifully shaped, which by the way, each designer drafts from a different block, so the patterns do have distinct cup shape differences. I feel like this has a big impact on fit and overall silhouette. From my observations Orange Lingerie tend to have a more rounded profile from the side, Madalynne’s designs are often pear-shaped with more fullness at the bottom, and Emerald Erin’s patterns lean toward an elliptical or oval shape that offers balanced lift and coverage. #BRAugust2021 day 28: Fantasy . I try not to make things that are too over the top to be wearable, but I think this set does have an element of fantasy to it! 🥰 . It all started with this interesting lace I found on AliExpress. I think it was called Princess Castle lace, and as you can see (particularly in the second picture) it has these beautiful embroidered buildings and trees all along one edge. . The hard thing was planning how to use this lace without breaking up the design! Even a darted bra would break up the embroidery. I decided the best way to use it would be on the cradle of a longline bra! I started with the @orange_lingerie Boylston bra, and extended the length so I could best use the width of the lace I had. I then used bra tulle for the cups, simplex for the straps, and powernet for the back band, keeping the rest of the bra basic white. . For the underwear, I had an idea of doing the lace upside down, to give the illusion of the scene being mirrored or reflected (although I couldn't actually mirror the design). I took this concept a little further, by adding a curved seam line, which in my mind mimics the idea of the buildings being reflected in a pool of water. Not sure if that comes across, but I think it captures the essence of the look I was going for! The underwear are the Betty panties from @sucobysusana with a curved seam added to the front. . I posted a sneak peek of this bra earlier, but here's the finished set! I had a lot of fun making this one - an unofficial resewlution (😉) of mine this year is to add more special touches when I sew, and in this case I added a fun little strappy detail to the bridge, and echoed the hardware elements at the strap attachment points and on the underwear. . The patterns are the Boylston bra by @orange_lingerie and the Ultimate Lace panties by @ohhhlulu, both great patterns I've used many times before. The lace was from Etsy, and I dyed the elastics, channeling and powernet to match. . At first I made the straps too short, but I added some velvet ribbon I had to lengthen the straps at the back at it worked really well, perfect colour match!! Fourth and final entry for the #inspirejulychallenge complete! This week was embroidery week with @nelliejoans, and I followed her tutorial to embroider on some white bra tulle to make this @orange_lingerie Boylston bra. I have to say, this challenge really opened my eyes to the possibilities of embroidery in lingerie making - it's like making your own fabric! While it took me longer than expected, doing the embroidery was a great mindfulness exercise, especially with the simple design I chose. I used a simple running stitch on some bra tulle, following the natural lines of the tulle to create some geometric diagonal lines and diamond shapes. It took me a while, but I was quite pedantic about it and literally counted out the holes between rows to make sure they were even 😁 then whipped up some @megannielsenpatterns Acacia briefs to match. Holiday party top! 🥂 The Pattern: @closetcorepatterns #sophieswimsuit converted to a top, with cup pieces from the @orange_lingerie #boylstonbra swapped in; I like the ratio of upper to lower cup better, and they fit well into the pattern, with a bit of tweaking to line things up The Fabric: Crushed stretch velvet from @emeralderinsews, where I also got most of the findings and powernet/powermesh for the lining. Thoughts: I really wanted a fun party top that could be layered with a blazer or cardigan, so I remade this swimsuit/top in a lovely velvet, mostly following the same steps as before. Sewing with velvet for the first time was…not my favorite…BUT not as horrific as I expected! I do prefer the Boylston cup shaping and support to the first version of this, and would probably use those pattern pieces again in the future. #BRAugust2021 day 18: Print/solid . Weirdly, I have very few lingerie pieces that are strictly prints or solids. Most of mine are lace or embroidered tulle! However, this is a set I made recently with a lovely printed silk. . The fabric and the majority of the materials used here came from a bra kit from @yourwaylingerie. I don't usually buy my supplies as kits, but I have been buying a few recently to support some local lingerie supply companies! This is the 'brushstrokes' kit, designed to be used in an underwire bra. The star of the show is the brush strokes printed silk satin. I used some extra Lycra and elastic to make the briefs. . The difficulty for me with using non stretch fabrics in bra making is - how do I make matching underwear?! Luckily, when I received this kit I was in the process of testing the new Tulip panties pattern from @primrosedawndesigns, which has a view that is specifically for incorporated a non stretch woven fabric! . Having made the briefs, I needed to make a matching bra - usually it works the other way around for me! I decided on a tried and true - the Boylston bra by @orange_lingerie. I used foam cups, and some silk ribbon that came in my kit to cover the cup seams. The other special touch was adding a little piece of hardware to the bridge, which I had ordered from @contouratelier. I love adding small details like this 😊 . I think the set turned out super wearable, and looks quite RTW in my opinion! . Sometimes I have to put aside my love of lace and silk and print and just go with what my client wishes. In this instance I have been asked for a simple, soft, plain bra in a quiet colour. The bra is a double mastectomy bra, this time with the padding permanently sewn in. The client wanted the bra to be light, as prosthetics can be very heavy, she wanted straps with no hardware and minimal seams . She prefers a smooth moulded t-shirt cup and a balcony style with wide set straps as she needs to avoid the strap crossing her chemo port. This bra is a combination of self drafted with the look of the straps taken from @orange_lingerie #boylstonbra and a band made from power net covered on both sides with bamboo jersey. This bra is a working prototype and I’m already seeing area where I can improve on the design. A little something I finished up last night! This is the @orange_lingerie Boylston bra altered for a lace frame, with a fun strap detail I added to the bridge. The lace was from eBay, and I dyed the elastics and other parts to match. . Annoyingly I must have mismeasured the straps, as they are really tight, even on the loosest setting! I'm going to go back and add some length to them in the back. . Boylston bra fitting issues So the issues I have: - The band rises up under one of the boobs (I don’t feel this at all, it doesn’t seem to impact comfort) - The bridge is not flat against my chest. In fact, it’s quite a gap which also means the boobs aren’t perfectly in the cups. So from what I gather at Orange Lingerie’s blog on fitting, my bridge is too wide and is therefore not flat against my body. This is also very clear when I compare the actual pattern piece to the finished bra (OMG what was I doing?!) and the Cloth Habit Harriet bra. It really seems to be the main issue. Another reason that the cups are not containing the boobs perfectly might potentially be that the material, while lined, is stretchy and the pattern calls for very little to no movement fabrics. The riding up of the band is a common issue I have and would most likely be solved by making a partial band style bra/ Gothic arch. I have not tried either of them but really excited to explore further. This week I continued bra making! This adventure began last August, and after 6 toiles I got the fit right. I made 5 late last year, before I ran out of underwires and completed 4 this week with 1 in progress (cut one piece the wrong way and no more fabric). My favourite are the Liberty Tana Lawn with light interfacing. With foam cups, I don't seem to get as good a fit. I watched loads of video, most helpful is LizSews on YouTube. I posted a sneak peek of this bra earlier, but here's the finished set! I had a lot of fun making this one - an unofficial resewlution (😉) of mine this year is to add more special touches when I sew, and in this case I added a fun little strappy detail to the bridge, and echoed the hardware elements at the strap attachment points and on the underwear. . The patterns are the Boylston bra by @orange_lingerie and the Ultimate Lace panties by @ohhhlulu, both great patterns I've used many times before. The lace was from Etsy, and I dyed the elastics, channeling and powernet to match. . At first I made the straps too short, but I added some velvet ribbon I had to lengthen the straps at the back at it worked really well, perfect colour match!! Fourth and final entry for the #inspirejulychallenge complete! This week was embroidery week with @nelliejoans, and I followed her tutorial to embroider on some white bra tulle to make this @orange_lingerie Boylston bra. I have to say, this challenge really opened my eyes to the possibilities of embroidery in lingerie making - it's like making your own fabric! While it took me longer than expected, doing the embroidery was a great mindfulness exercise, especially with the simple design I chose. #BRAugust2021 day 18: Print/solid . Weirdly, I have very few lingerie pieces that are strictly prints or solids. Most of mine are lace or embroidered tulle! However, this is a set I made recently with a lovely printed silk. . The fabric and the majority of the materials used here came from a bra kit from @yourwaylingerie. I don't usually buy my supplies as kits, but I have been buying a few recently to support some local lingerie supply companies! This is the 'brushstrokes' kit, designed to be used in an underwire bra. The star of the show is the brush strokes printed silk satin. I used some extra Lycra and elastic to make the briefs. . The difficulty for me with using non stretch fabrics in bra making is - how do I make matching underwear?! Luckily, when I received this kit I was in the process of testing the new Tulip panties pattern from @primrosedawndesigns, which has a view that is specifically for incorporated a non stretch woven fabric! . Having made the briefs, I needed to make a matching bra - usually it works the other way around for me! I decided on a tried and true - the Boylston bra by @orange_lingerie. I used foam cups, and some silk ribbon that came in my kit to cover the cup seams. The other special touch was adding a little piece of hardware to the bridge, which I had ordered from @contouratelier. I love adding small details like this 😊 . I think the set turned out super wearable, and looks quite RTW in my opinion! . So not sure if this is fun or just funny, but I felt like I needed to share this pair of underwear with some unfortunate print placement today! 🤣 The back looks like I've had an accident, the front has an arrow and just weird splodges.... #BRAugust2021 day 28: Fantasy . I try not to make things that are too over the top to be wearable, but I think this set does have an element of fantasy to it! 🥰 . It all started with this interesting lace I found on AliExpress. I think it was called Princess Castle lace, and as you can see (particularly in the second picture) it has these beautiful embroidered buildings and trees all along one edge. . The hard thing was planning how to use this lace without breaking up the design! Even a darted bra would break up the embroidery. I decided the best way to use it would be on the cradle of a longline bra! I started with the @orange_lingerie Boylston bra, and extended the length so I could best use the width of the lace I had. I then used bra tulle for the cups, simplex for the straps, and powernet for the back band, keeping the rest of the bra basic white. . For the underwear, I had an idea of doing the lace upside down, to give the illusion of the scene being mirrored or reflected (although I couldn't actually mirror the design). I took this concept a little further, by adding a curved seam line, which in my mind mimics the idea of the buildings being reflected in a pool of water. Not sure if that comes across, but I think it captures the essence of the look I was going for! The underwear are the Betty panties from @sucobysusana with a curved seam added to the front. . Holiday party top! 🥂 The Pattern: @closetcorepatterns #sophieswimsuit converted to a top, with cup pieces from the @orange_lingerie #boylstonbra swapped in; I like the ratio of upper to lower cup better, and they fit well into the pattern, with a bit of tweaking to line things up The Fabric: Crushed stretch velvet from @emeralderinsews, where I also got most of the findings and powernet/powermesh for the lining. Thoughts: I really wanted a fun party top that could be layered with a blazer or cardigan, so I remade this swimsuit/top in a lovely velvet, mostly following the same steps as before. Sewing with velvet for the first time was…not my favorite…BUT not as horrific as I expected! I do prefer the Boylston cup shaping and support to the first version of this, and would probably use those pattern pieces again in the future. Thanks to @nelliejoans for hosting the embroidery challenge for the #inspirejulychallenge! I had so much fun doing this. I used a simple running stitch on some bra tulle, following the natural lines of the tulle to create some geometric diagonal lines and diamond shapes. It took me a while, but I was quite pedantic about it and literally counted out the holes between rows to make sure they were even 😁 then whipped up some @megannielsenpatterns Acacia briefs to match. Love this set so much!! Not sure what I was thinking when I bought bra tulle. But since I bought it, I had to make it. It turned out to be a major eye test with 4 layers of shifting tulle and I thought it will show all the faulty inaccurate sewing, but it fits and I love it.
