#braugust Hello my name is Angela and I’ve been obsessively sewing lingerie for around four years. Although I have a marketing degree I qualified as a chartered accountant but now looking forward to pursuing my many hobbies full time. My goal is to get as many people as I can to try making their own beautiful well fitting underwear. So when the #thegreatbrasewingbee asked me to present a class on recreating inspirational panty looks from commercially available patterns I thought it would be right up my street. Having finished recording the class I just had to make bras to match the four different styles I made up. This one is a t-shirt bra to match the no vpl I did for the class. I can’t replicate the moulded fabric shown in the centre picture but having the super soft and stretchy microlycra from @brabuilders is a great start. I used the @orange_lingerie #mysticbra and adjusted for a lace edge one piece side band from the #berkeleybra I also moved the strap adjustment to the back for a smoother front. For those curious about the fit of my recent #mysticbra make - here it is. I know foam cup bras aren’t for everyone but I like them and I’m really pleased with how this fits with no alterations to the pattern. There is a slight gap along the top of the cup (only really noticeable when I’m a bit lax in my posture) and that happens to me with my RTW foam cup bras too. Except for my oldest and favourite RTW bra - an Elle McPhearson foam cup bra that has picot elastic along the top edge of the cup. You can’t see the stitching from the outside though so it would take a bit of tricky construction to replicate. I’m keen to try it next time and see how I get on! When you're restricting your buying and making it all yourself, sooner or later you need to tackle a bra 😬 . I picked the #orangelingerie #mysticbra because it's closest in design/style to my favorite rtw bra and the patterns come with great reviews 👌 . So far, I'm already playing off the books - when I took my measurements and compared it to the chart it told me to make a 36A. Nope. That's for SURE not going to work. So I'm going to start by making a 34C on my first attempt (I've read that bras take a few tries to get right so I'm aiming for 3 tries before success) and see what modifications I need to make from there. . I am working on the #mysticbra, for I wanted to have seamless cups that don't show underneath clothing and I also was curious to know how it is like to work with these pre-formed foam cups. . Once I had collected all the required things and read over the pattern description I became puzzled. My pre-formed foam cups were provided with seam allowances, which is not the same for the cups used for the pattern. So what to do? Was it possible to fold the seam allowances of the foam (not quite flexible) into the cups after having sewed the underwire casing onto the cups? No, I thought. But what to do with the pattern? For it has a frameless design... What to do? . Well, cooking, ironing and lots of other things, instead of sewing. . After a night's sleep I decided to draw my own bra pattern (with a frame) using the size of the pre-formed foam cup as a base (instead of the underwire). And so I did. But my wavering still went on and after having watched a few youtube videos I finally decided to cut off the seam allowances and use the cups ánd the pattern after all! . I had to add on a seam allowance on the cups and I chose to use bias tape. I know, that's not exactly without movement, but I couldn't imagine how twill tape would allow me to fold it inside (in a concave shape). Next week I'll tell you how it finally worked out. Hopefully well, we'll see. I also changed the way of covering the cups with fabric. I use slippery mesh, beautiful but slippery, so I pinned it right onto the cups, sewed it in place with a large stitch and low thread tension (afterwards it can be easily removed) and cut off the excess fabric. I then added picot to the upper and side edge of the cups, for some attitude. And yes... Success! And it fits! This is #theamandaalyssabra by #pinupgirlspatterns and I am so glad I made the #mysticbra right before this and had made the #marlboroughbra before, because I used construction techniques from both of those bras (such as adding seam tape to the foam cup so the seam can fold up when attaching the underwire and hiding the underwire channel under the upper band elastic). I also did the straps like the Mystic Bra. This one went so much more smoothly than the last one for several reasons. The practice on the first one helped, of course (this time I didn’t crush the cups), but the fabric I used over the cups wasn’t pilling as I was working with it like the last fabric was, so it just seems like a better quality fabric. I also used the regular angled foam cups and not the push up cups this time and I like those better. I also had the correct length underwire this time. What was also nice is that this pattern is designed to fit the foam cups from @bramakerssupply so no adjustments to the cup needed to be made. It fit perfectly! This is exactly the sort of supportive foam cup bra I have been wanting, so I am super excited to have a TNT t-shirt bra pattern now! 🧨

For my "New-vember" make for this week, I tried out @orange_lingerie #mysticbra . This bra has a pre-formed foam cup in a partial band. This was the type of bra I wore everyday before I stared making bras. I bought the pattern and foam cups at the very start of my bra making over a year ago because I wasn't sure I would like bras with seamed cups and old habits die hard and all that... Anyway, this pattern and 2 sets of foam cups have been sitting in my stash for over a year. The more I made bras the more I realized how much better seamed cups fit over pre-formed cups. But, occasionally there might be a scenario where a bra like this, without seams, may be wanted, so I challenged myself to make it and make it fit! First thing was to baste a wire to the cup and 'try it on'. As expected, the cup was way too big (much like my RTW bras). I marked the excess where the cup stood away from my body and trimmed it. Then I proceeded with the pattern as instructed. I totally used the wrong needle and there are skipped stitches everywhere. I also pulled the fabric a little too tight on the right cup. Overall, it's not a horrible fit at all! It's comfortable, and the red and white could totally end up in the holiday rotation. I think I'll save my other set of cups for a more specific project in the future if the need ever arises. What about you?
