This must be one of my all time favorite makes! I haven’t even worn it outside, yet (what’s with the cold?! I want spring!), but even putting it on for pictures made me feel so good! That’s the true power of some clothes isn’t it? It might seem shallow, but some clothes just elevate us, our mood, our confidence! This coat does that for me! For Day 5 I have a (finally) modded Ulysses trench coat - I mentioned before that I wasn't quite so keen on the shape, so I have finally taken the plunge and: moved the pockets up, gathered the back with an elastic, and chopped the front corner sto make them level with the back. I do feel that these changes make it so much more wearable for smaller people, and I'm so pleased to finally be able to wear this! At long last, the #ulyssestrench by @victorypatterns I took a workshop in the before times with the lovely @kristiann_boos who designed it. I finally hemmed the darn thing and it is so much fun to wear. It’s got this rock and roll vibe I like. Bias covered seams and back flap lining are of a @libertylondon cotton lawn. If you swipe you can see it peeking out under the back flap. The belt loops are part of the flap...so clever! Buckle and epaulette buttons are vintage #bakelite from Etsy. Boots are #derbyswirl by @fluevog. I will attempt a Reels later to show how it moves as you walk. A new month so a new sewing project! I’ve been struggling to concentrate on anything over the last few weeks so I’m hoping a new project will fix that. This jacket is the Ulysses Trench made in a tencel twill from Blackbird. It’s got a drapey shawl collar and big pockets. And I really like how the belt loops are through the back flap. Such a cool detail. Pattern adjustments: I straightened out the front pieces so that it doesn’t have a hi-lo hem. The front still drapes a little lower than the back but I like it. I’m 5’8” and didn’t have to make any changes to the length of the body or the arms. The shoulders are just a touch wide - and that’s usually an area where things are too narrow but that could just be because it’s so drapey. #ulyssestrench #blackbirdfabrics #memademay #memademay2020 #sewnshownseated

This little #sewing channel has became a #knitting space lately for a variety of reasons like what I want to wear vs what’s in my closet, my interest has shifted to learning something new, and mainly because my sewing room has been a disarray as work/life became busy. Today, I spent the afternoon reorganizing my printed patterns into these file folders. These fit the larger patterns like trench coats or moto jacket, or multiple patterns of the same designers, while the smaller patterns remain in the old envelope system I had. It’s a satisfying clean up, and I’m ready to tackle my next project (see sneak peek of the fabric in background) which will either be the last project of the year or the first project of 2023. I’m super short and it’s hard to find coats that fit. Finally had the time to make a @victorypatterns #ulyssestrench using tencel twill from @stonemountainfabric in Berkeley. I shortened the pattern by about 9” 😂 and love the result! Drapey and casual in the front and more structured in the back. I used old buttons from my late grandma’s collection on the shoulders; I like to think maybe they came from one of her coats. 🙂

Im joining in #oneyearsewn with @sewstainability ... assessing the garments I sewed during summer 2019 with a view to continuing my journey to make garments that last, both in style and construction. And on the face of it... it was a poor season's sewing (see first two slides)... but there are extenuating circumstances which we are all aware of. There are virtually no garments here which I have worn this summer. One reason being that by last summer I already had a summer wardrobe that I loved and wore in constant rotation...so most of the sewing I did last summer was with remnants and windfall fabrics. The Zadie jumpsuit I love... but I just haven't had chance to wear it this year, nowhere to go (and as it's pouring today it feels as though I'll never wear it again...but I will, this has staying power). The #ulyssestrench was made with some deep stash fabric to wear with this particular dress and I knew it would only be worn very occasionally... this occasion hasn't presented itself recently. The Wiksten shift dress...well, again, no opportunity to wear it ...I won this fabric and much as I love it, it's not really me, I will have a think as to whether to keep it for very occasional wear, or pass it on to someone who will wear it more often. I made the two skirts from fabric swap and deep stash fabric... much as I love the print one I've found, in the Saltmarsh skirt, a skirt pattern that feels more me. The green skirt will be passed on. Finally the 3 sleeveless tops...well, I've not been anywhere hot this summer so I haven't had chance to wear. And the cuff top just didn't work for me and was passed on to a friend. So basically a mixture of no opportunity to wear, and making things that aren't really me. . Swipe to the 3rd slide for tops that I made two and three summers ago that get alot of wear .... and I'm pretty sure that the garments I have made this summer are much more my style and will have lasting power. Making the @victorypatterns #ulyssestrench has been quite a journey for me. Learned many new things including proper pattern grading, making bias binding, constructing a back vent, using an edge stitch foot for topstitching, and hemming corners. This is more like a coatigan with trench elements, I just love the rain guard and epaulettes. #mauvecloud_sewn --- I shortened everything (since the pattern is drafted for 177cm and wearer is under 155cm): 5cm at front and back waist, 10cm at coat hem, extra 13cm off the front "dip" hem, 8cm at sleeves, 5cm in the overlay and corresponding lining. --- Fabric was tencel twill from @maaidesign. Pattern calls for 3.6m for size XS and I bought about 3m, knowing I'd be shortening the pattern a lot. It's drapey (180GSM) yet strong with a subtle striped texture. It'd also look great in fabrics with more body and weight depending on the look you're after. Lining was poly satin from my stash. --- One thing I felt so stupid about: I bought 2 x 100m matching Gutermann threads, but I ran out just before the final step of topstitching the entire coat hem!!
