Sunshine + iridescent leather = 🤩🤩🤩 I wasn’t sure if I or my machine could handle this project. Turns out we can. I reinforced this amazing leather (which is from @newcrafthouse) before sewing it to help give the bag more structure. I changed the proportions of the @victorypatterns Madrid Tote pattern to match those of the new Sezane tote, which is £££ (see last pic). It’s another tote-bag bonanza. A couple of last-minute birthday gifts for November. No. 4 and 5 in a series of who knows how many! I confess my favourite part of making these is playing with trims and labels (it’s all about the labels!) to suit the recipient and the fabric. Always satisfying to find a use for those leftover lengths of bias or ribbon from deep in the sewing box. Again I’ve added a little extra to the seam allowances to facilitate French seams for tidy innards (base seams are bias bound as the webbing is too thick to French). Finally added straps to my #madridtote (pattern is from @seamwork ). I love this bag so much! It’s simple but eye-catching design is my jam. ✨ The lines print is from @jenhewett (and i still have just a bit of it left in my #theespadrilleskit ). The leather was rescued from the landfill when my neighbor realized I sew and she gifted it to me! She had used it to make a leather fringe jacket in the 70s and was finally doing a pandemic purge. Love that I can give it new life! The handles were super easy to attach. This bag is a little special. After my dad passed away in May this year, I was sad and disappointed that my kids would not have a male role model other than my husband to guide and motivate them. My father-in-law had passed away in 2018 and that was painful as well. My youngest son did not even get a chance to meet him as he was born a few months after his passing. About 2 weeks after my dad left us, my oldest son told me he wanted #chess lessons. I was also in search for a tournament style chess set and came across a beautiful set on Carousell. I went to collect it and that’s when I met Uncle Bob. Didn’t expect anything except to settle payment but ended up speaking to him about chess for about 30 min. Through our conversation I found out that he coaches chess privately. I wasn’t sure at first because I had planned to put my son into a group class. After some thought, I decided to text Uncle Bob to arrange a session. While it is definitely more expensive to hire a private coach, Uncle Bob has been a blessing. I always believe in God’s timing and His purpose. Uncle Bob not only teaches chess with such passion but is very dedicated when it comes to kids. He also encourages family members to join in and doesn’t charge extra for this because he believe chess brings family together. I only started playing chess this year and have greatly improved. My son was diagnosed with ADHD around the same period and I learnt that chess would help with focus. Our psychologist also noted that my son lacked self-confidence which we agreed on. He is usually scared to try new things because he is afraid of failure. (Continued in comments…)

A leather version of Victory Patterns Madrid Tote with my own spin of course. Slightly different dimensions, added zipper to the top and a button stud on the pocket. The leather was part of a ginormous donation to my textiles class, from a tv series that finished filming. I’m going to use it as a class sample for students to try. One of the hardest things is predicting how long projects will take, especially in classes. We didn’t get through it in the studio together but I’ve got my #madridtote done by @VictoryPatterns. Sewed up a #madridtote bag last week. I haven't sewed much lately, I've been doing a couch to 5km type running program (recommend Run with Turia for anyone considering same) and I struggle to fit in both sewing and exercise (and netflix 🙊).
