Growing up, we had a family tradition of wearing a new outfit for Easter. I have continued this tradition for both nostalgia’s sake and as an excuse to sew🧵🥰 👗This tunic top was made from an @atelierbrunette viscose from @wyldwoodcreative. 💜💚🤎 The top itself is a basic rectangle with long, wide and dramatic sleeves, creating a batwing effect. It’s a very 80’s vibe. 🕶️ You may be asking yourself, could this be worn as a mini dress? I tried my hand at the free Start Here Top to play with a low waste pattern, which I don't have much experience with. It's pretty neat to watch rectangles turn into things. After using my initial calculations, I made a few changes for preferred fit and style. I closed the neckline up a couple of inches and hemmed the sleeves and bodice much higher, I think about four inches. I love the weight that gives this top!♥️ I'm much better in tee length or cropped than tunic. I had a bit of fabric left over from my last project, so I pieced them together and made a Start Here top. This one is made in a yummy medium weight houndstooth linen from @stitchesseattle. 🥰 I know I’m biased, but I love this top because it’s a very useful basic-not-basic. A simple self-drafted top paired with ribbed stretch velvet #ninniculottes. ❤️ The top is made in the softest, squishiest four layer gauze purchased from Etsy. It’s remarkably warm- and super cozy, which is my vibe in the wintertime. I'm excited to be posting for #sewfrugal25 hosted by @theyorkshiresewgirl and @frugalisama ! I made the Start Here top by @criswoodsews . I found this pattern to be a great first step into the world of zero/minimal waste sewing. I made some mistakes on the sleeves and I worry that the neckline is collapsing. On my next version, I might try the sleeveless view and I might use some light interfacing at the neck opening. I could see myself playing with making the neck opening a bit smaller too. I spent a frankly excessive amount of time on vacation browsing the community and getting inspired by all the #sewistsofinstagram 💡I stumbled across @criswoodsews and her no/low waste patterns--no paper pattern pieces, just made-to-measure rectangles, which also leaves few (and usable) scraps. She's offering the Start Here top for free, and I had a small chunk of this Balenciaga (??) viscose pique knit from @moodfabrics left over in my stash (one of my first fabric purchases, on sale online before I realized how difficult it is to buy fabric online and how much I'm really willing to spend on it 😅). This pattern is probably best for wovens, but #stashbusting is stashbusting, so I went for it. Because everything is rectangular, it's easy for even beginners (👋) to hack & customize this. I increased the armhole ease, added elastic to the sleeve cuffs and chopped 3 inches off the front length to create a stepped hem with small side vents. #criswoodsewsstarthere #imakemyclothes #nowaste #savepaper

#memademay2023 day 3 Unexpected layering! First time I tried wearing the @criswoodsews start here top as a layer under a dress. I love it! It makes this very summery dress much more versatile for spring and adds to my linen look picnic blanket vibe of the day😂. I've been wearing the parasol with long sleeve t-shirts, but this linen top underneath is so comfortable! Because I work in a somewhat cold work environment (aka our basement!) and don't always move around lots while working, I have to wear lots of layers to keep warm, so I've been paring it with a wool cardigan and a scarf. Also trying out a new spot to take pictures. This room is unusually tidy today so I grabbed that opportunity. Because my sewing space is a mess as always. I’ve been cyanotyping a bunch of fabric lately and just made these two garments from @criswoodsews patterns!!☀️💧🌿🌀These would both work better with a more fluid drape fabric. The cotton stuff I bought ended up being far stiffer than I thought it would be but the shirt and throw jacket still worked out alright. I love these sewing patterns — low waste, super easy to follow. And the jacket has pockets!! Check out these Free Pattern hacks!! Both of these garments were made using the free Start Here top on my website! 🥳 Both are a little bit bit wider than the pattern suggests ( although the Start Here top is plenty roomy as is) and sleeveless, which you can easily do by employing the same technique as the neckline. 🙂 For the gathered skirt, I multiplied the width of the bodice by 1.5. For the lengths of the dress bodice and skirt, I just kind of eyeballed it by holding up the fabric and adding an inch and a half for the seam allowances. 😁 both of these fabrics were from @joann_stores. The grid fabric is a medium weight linen, and the cotton lawn is a @rachelcomey fabric.
