I have been mulling over what my next project will be and I think I want to make something with more log cabin blocks as I enjoyed making them so much for the Log Cabin @criswoodsews Glow Dress I made to wear at QuiltCon. In the rush to get ready for my trip to Phoenix I didn’t really get to document or share as much as I wanted about this dress (which is definitely top three for my favorite quilty makes of all time) so I hope you will indulge me now. Several years ago I saved a post of a skirt made from a vintage quilt top from @dancebythelightofthemoon . I just couldn’t get it out of my mind and I wanted to try to recreate it with fabrics from my stash (mostly modern stuff with a few vintage fabrics thrown in). Since I knew these blocks would be made into a garment from the get go I pieced them on my trusty @brothersews 1034D serger. She may not be fancy, but she has served me well for my garment makes for over a decade. I modified the Glow Dress pattern’s skirt to be three tiers instead of two so it would be maxi length (and so I could use more blocks). Since that was a LOT of gathering I looked into if I could find a ruffler foot for my Janome MC6700P. When I struck out (on reasonably priced options), I had a 💡 moment and remembered something about using a serger to gather fabric. After watching a quick video tutorial, I was off to the races. It was a bit nerve wracking to change up the settings on my machine (I took photos of all the switches & dials 😆), but it worked like a charm. No more double lines of stitching and pulling the bobbin threads (and hoping they don’t snap) for me!! Final make if June was my second @criswoodsews #criswoodsewsglow! Same modifications as last one (shorter upper and lower skirt) but I added a third tier to make it maxi and swishier. This is the “Lauderdale” cotton poplin from Harts in Santa Cruz ☺️

This was a two dress weekend so more pix coming. This is another beauty from @criswoodsews - the #criswoodsewsglow made of quite a crisp cotton remnant from @rainbowfabrickilburn - I had scraps spare from 3m. The dress was really fun to make and is a brilliant summer dress. An extra, silly picture from when I got self conscious posing and started throwing daft poses. This is the tenth ‘good’ dress I’ve made, and the tenth time I’ve posed for recent pictures in the garden. Until I started sewing I very rarely posted pictures of myself - and I still feel awkward posing and self conscious posting. But… sewing for me is partly about body acceptance, about making clothes that fit my body as it is, not as it ‘should’ be - if the clothes don’t fit, it’s a problem with the clothes, not with me. A few years ago I’d have really struggled to sew a handmade wardrobe because so many patterns weren’t size inclusive. Now many more are, thanks to the work of fat sewists. But when I search pattern hashtags it takes a long time to find the clothes on a body like mine - pictures which tell me how they might look on me. Searching I found the wonderful @caitsews and her brilliant wardrobe hugely inspired me - and she’s been so helpful, kind and encouraging. So, when I post pictures of me in me mades it’s not just smugness - it’s also helping other people picture themselves in the dress. And because I’m going to be in the picture from now on.

I think Day 2 of @themqg QuiltCon this year was my favorite. Mostly because it felt amazing to walk amongst so many creatives in my log cabin maxi dress. I received so many generous compliments and had a taste of the celebrity treatment with folks wanting my photo. 🤭 (Dress Pattern: @criswoodsews Glow dress, modified to have a three tier skirt and shoulder elastic omitted, the log cabin blocks were assembled by me on my serger with a mix of new, old, and vintage inspired fabrics from everyone from @annamariahorner to @jenkingwell and many in between.) 🔴My day started off with an amazing swap outside organized by @peartreemarket_com . I got to see the ever effervescent @cocoquiltco , meet fellow Ohioan @piperautumnfabrics , admire all of the amazing jumpsuits & makes, and squeeze the pocket-sized @quiltwithmisskate . 🟠There was more time in and outside of the vendor hall where I ran into @harrcraftgoods . @saeco.sewing went a little off book and used a jersey for this #criswoodsewsglow dress! 😍 If you would like to try this dress with a knit, jersey is the best option. You would not want to try it with a knit that has lycra or spandex, because the weight of it will drag down the bodice. ✨ She also used a tie option instead of the elastic to create the bow at the shoulder. I made a dress and I wore the dress to a wonderful wedding reception in the summer and my 10yo kid art directed a mini photoshoot (she likes a triumphant arm and the archway that made it look like I was surrounded by fairies!) It’s the @criswoodsews Glow Dress made with some slinky silky fabric my aunt gave me for Christmas. It’s a rich blue with a subtle floral pattern and is lovely to wear, although it definitely let me know exactly how rough my hands/nails were while sewing it. The #criswoodsewsglow is a great low waste, beginner friendly pattern. It’s made up of six rectangles which your own measurements dictate so it’s really size-inclusive too. I was aiming for Grecian Goddess vibes (because why not?!) so I omitted the shoulder elastic and added dangly golden ties instead to go with my other gold accessories and glass of Prosecco.

This morning I finished this @criswoodsews #criswoodsewsglow It is a very quick and simple sew, but I really took my time and I’ve been sewing it over the last two weeks. 😂 I made two modifications from the pattern — I omitted the ruching from the shoulders, and made the skirt craaaazy long and gathered. It’s fun, but given how voluminous the skirt is, it kind of feel like it’s wearing me. Another @brisbanespoolettes #frocktails done and dusted. I think this is my 4th time now and my most favourite one yet! I love getting to see sewing friends old and new ❤️ This year I made an @criswoodsews #criswoodsewsglow dress. Originally made for a wedding in June but not worn 🥶 I hacked the pattern to have exposed raw edges on the skirt and shoulder for a little touch of texture. As the fabric is very sheer I double layered everything and used a combination of French seams and overlocking. Fabric was $6 from the opshop, a mystery georgette/chiffon type thing and a long term stash resident. Needing something extra to finish it off and not wanting to purchase anything I hit upon the idea of using my large container of secondhand mixed beads, safety pins and black elastic to fashion a belt. Over 250 safety pins later, a few pairs of hooks and eyes and a belt was born. Now the only thing needed was a little clutch and what better than one with a giant safety pin. To make the pin I used the linings of a broken cold bag and appliquéd it too backing fabric with tulle over the top. It is simply hand sewn to the classic @kylieandthemachine #idaclutch My bag strap is an altered lanyard from the wedding that originally inspired the making of this dress. I have been keeping it because I didn’t think of a good sewing pattern for it. The lace was 165cm almost square, so I modified the sizes of the pattern's rectangles to make them fit the lace's square perfectly. •The bodice parts length: about -10cm •The upper skirt parts width: about + 20cm (with gathering) •The bottom skirt parts width and length: about -10cm and +20cm I was successful to avoid any loss, which means ZERO WASTE! I’ve used this yarn dyed, cotton gingham from @Minerva before and I really love it. This time I went with the wine which was gifted to me as a Minerva Ambassador. I used 1.5m of the 1/8” and 1.5m of the 3/8” This is the @CrisWoodSews, #CrisWoodSewsGlow, a recently released zero-waste pattern. This dress is very cleverly designed and made up of rectangles. You use the instructions in the pattern to cut your pattern pieces. This means that you can use the pattern to fit any size and height. I used the full width for the skirt and with the small amount of fabric left I made the cuffs. I have a little left of the larger gingham but it is very usable as they are regular shapes. I love how the channel for the waist elastic is created from the seam allowance, it gives a very neat finish. This is a really simple dress to construct with good instructions. I made a few changes. I omitted the elastic from the shoulders as shown in the pattern. Instead I left the shoulders as is and added the cuffs from the @MunaAndBroad, #LobethalShirt. I love these cuffs as they can be added to any straight edge. They are put on in kind of a circle before sewing the side seams, so you just have to mark the centre of the cuff with the shoulder so you don’t have to work out the armscye. Difficult to explain but Leila from Muna and Broad has a great video on YouTube showing how. I interfaced the cuffs with silk organza, which I find works really well. I also added zipped pockets. I had intended to take up a hem, but I like the finished length, so I just did a rolled hem on my serger. I often do this on gathered skirts. (PS please forgive the bad hair day!) Taking what I have already and creating new outfits and styling differently, looking into the far corners of my closet and remembering pieces I’ve forgotten about. Perfectly timed, as I almost always end up going thru my closet in March and reevaluate my winter wardrobe and prep for spring. To make this challenge easier for myself and less stressful, I may take more pics without my head/face than I normally do, as this is about my closet and wardrobe and I don’t want to have to stress about my face and hair and smiling etc etc… kwim? Also, I may not be doing this 75 consecutive days lol we’ll see how it goes but for now, it’s worth a try 😘 So who’s in?! YACWSGD! (Yet Another Cris Wood Sews Glow Dress) First picture is how I styled it for the date I made it for, and other photos taken after I cleaned the sewing room, clearly. This one I kept the same upper skirt adjustment, did a longer lower skirt but no third tier, and I omitted the shoulder elastic. I’m finally wearing all the summer dresses as we’re having a bit of a heatwave. This is the @CrisWoodSews, #CrisWoodSewsGlow, a fairly recently released zero-waste pattern. It’s made from a lovely yarn-dyed gingham given to me by @Minerva as a Minerva Ambassador. And got a compliment on the ‘details’ while out on a lunchtime errand. Always nice! These are the original pics as I made a mess of the ones I took today. Below are the details from when I made this. This dress is very cleverly designed and made up of rectangles. You use the instructions in the pattern to cut your pattern pieces. This means that you can use the pattern to fit any size and height. I used the full width for the skirt and with the small amount of fabric left I made the cuffs. I have a little left of the larger gingham but it is very usable as they are regular shapes. I love how the channel for the waist elastic is created from the seam allowance, it gives a very neat finish. This is a really simple dress to construct with good instructions. I made a few changes. I omitted the elastic from the shoulders as shown in the pattern. Instead I left the shoulders as is and added the cuffs from the @MunaAndBroad, #LobethalShirt. I love these cuffs as they can be added to any straight edge. They are put on in kind of a circle before sewing the side seams, so you just have to mark the centre of the cuff with the shoulder so you don’t have to work out the armscye. Difficult to explain but Leila from Muna and Broad has a great video on YouTube showing how. I interfaced the cuffs with silk organza, which I find works really well. I also added zipped pockets. I had intended to take up a hem, but I like the finished length, so I just did a rolled hem on my serger. 夏に良さそうな#criswoodsewsglow @criswoodsewsができた！ 先日、乱入させてもらった@saeco.sewing さんと@kinu_sewingさんのライブで紹介されてたパターンです。 #kinusaecoglow 四角形を組み合わせて作る、裁断が楽、そして布ロスが少ない（ほぼない）レシピ。おぉー、服になったぞー🙌変更点は、襟ぐりのあきを前-5cm後-7cm 詰めたこと、布が足りなかったので、上身頃が-4cm くらい短いことかしらね。 面白かった、また作ろう！ My first version of #criswoodsewsglow was sewn up！This dress is made by assembling three types of rectangles and it’s easy to adjust the size for individuals. Completed my #criswoodsewsglow dress this morning before work. I think it needs a couple of tweaks, which I can only know by wearing it.
