Kaia Double-Faced Coat
Kaia is an oversized short coat slightly tapered toward the hem, designed specifically for double face coating fabrics. It features a dropped shoulder line, a bal collar with collar stand, and a single breasted closure at the center front. The coat has welt pockets, visible pocket bags on the inside, and a curved front hem that sits above the hip-line.

And saving my absolute favourite make from this year for Day 12 of Ryn’s @tookiethings #12FavMakes2024. My #kaiacoat was thoroughly thrashed during Spring & Autumn. I loved making this coat & loved wearing it too. And the colour - all the 😍. Thanks Ryn, it’s been fun. . . . . #studioofsewing #sewinglessonsauckland #aucklandsewinglessons #learntosewauckland #aucklandsewingteacher #overlockerlessons #beginnersewingauckland #brothersews #sewauckland #brothersewsnz #sewnz #nzsews #aucklandsews #sewover50 #sewcialists #babylocknz #brotherstellairenz #babylockauckland #a0PDFprintingnz #a0pdfprintingauckland #A0patternprintingnz #A0patternprintingauckland #sogladmymotherforcedmetosew

I am so pleased with my new @bellalovespatterns Kaia jacket which I finished in time to wear to #ScottishFrocktails last night. . It was a surprise to me to get all the main pattern pieces cut from 96cm of fabric; initially I thought I'd have to do some #patchwork with a contrast fabric on the back, but it worked with a small bit of piecing on the lower back sleeves. It almost looks intentional!! . Because this pattern is designed for double-face fabric, I had to find other fabrics, and draft facings and lining, but the upside is that I was able to use (and hide) some weft interfacing! (see previous post). Isabella drafts all her patterns for two different height groups which is fab; it takes away a lot of the need for calculations! The instructions are great, but I had to adapt them for my fabrics. Love the pocket construction! . I made a phone pocket on the inside, with a #HandEmbroidered custom label, then got a bit carried away with size and care labels 🙄; the other two are from my fave @little.rosy.cheeks 🥰 . I got these lovely buttons from Maggie @TextileGarden and then, despite all my buttonhole tests being perfect I couldn't get the foot level for the actual jacket, so after five attempts, and unpicking, I ended up doing them by hand 😖 . This is my entry for #MagamSewalong #MagamSurpriseSeptember @sewing_in_spain @suestoney @stash_hub (lovely to see you last night Yvette 🥰) and as everything I used (apart from the buttons) was from stash, it is also an entry for #2FromStashAMonth @salixsews @septemberfaden . Pics from the weekend will follow! . #BLPKaia #KaiaCoat #littlerosycheeks #littlerosycheekslabels #SewOver50 #SewOver50September24 #SewOver60 #PetiteSewist #SewScottish #SewSustainably #SustainableSewing #SewistsOfInstagram #SewersOfInstagram #IMakeMyOwnClothes #SlowFashion #MeMade #FabricAddict #HandMadeWardrobe #ISewThereforeIAm #JeCoudsDoncJeSuis

November 2024 🐻 I made a coat! A proper wool coat! Or is it more a jacket or shacket? Either way, I’m super stoked with how it turned out!! I designed this pattern for my boyfriend for our chilly vacation to Seoul. I bought this gorgeous double faced wool coating from @wearethefabricstore in June 2023 and while I loved the original colour, I thought dying it darker would make it more stain resistant and suitable for frequent wearing. I bought the pattern #KaiaCoat from @bellalovespatterns to understand how to construct a jacket like this. Turns out for double faced fabrics, the seams often need to be split, then 1. (9th slide) are turned into them selves for the hem, or 2. (8th slide) they’re treated similarly to flat felled seams with one side of the seam allowance trimmed, the other side folded over and then instead of machine stitching it down, it’s finished by hand with an invisible stitch 🪡 The back yolk shape was inspired by a jacket I saw on the street a couple years back and I ended up going for a 2 piece sleeve to allow more shape and movement ! I also fell in love with these “tailors tacks” (12th slide) which I used to mark the notches. They’re so easy, leave no mark and are permanent until you remove them! 10/10 would recommend The pattern instructions were great, and I’m also super excited that I was able to JUST also cut a coat for myself out of the 3m of fabric (slide 11). This one is cut but I’ll start working on it later for the Brissy winter. Can’t wait for (mostly) matching outerwear 👯 I’m super proud of how neatly all the stitching turned out and how pretty the guts and the pockets are. Pocket linings are even scraps from a ball dress I’ve made previously! All up, it took about 2 weeks to design the pattern, make the toiles, dye the fabric, split the fabric seams and sew together the final jacket. Splitting and sewing alone took about 23 hours of actual sewing (I’m a slow sewer 😌 which is ok). It even snowed on our last day in Seoul 🥰 #sewsewsew #coat #memade #generoussewer #sewing #selfdrafted

Still no photos of Hubs modeling his new work pants. A mix of not being home together at the same time and inclement weather. I’m not complaining about the rain today though. Quite like rainy days every so often. Here’s a couple of pics of me in my #ootd from last Thursday, I’m wearing one of my favourite tops @thesewingrevival #tsrHeronShirt. The fabric is silk I originally intended to be lining, glad I decided it was too lush to be hidden inside a jacket. And speaking of jackets, this Heron just happens to go perfectly with my fav jacket this winter the #kaiacoat #blpkaia by @bellalovespatterns. Worn with my heavily modified #mfsara pants - this is such a great pants pattern if you’re into the drop crotch style. It’s a firm fav at the Studio too - quite a few Sewsters have made these up. And almost new boots - the colour is magnificent 🤩. . . . . #studioofsewing #sewinglessonsauckland #aucklandsewinglessons #learntosewauckland #aucklandsewingteacher #overlockerlessons #beginnersewingauckland #brothersews #sewauckland #brothersewsnz #sewnz #nzsews #aucklandsews #sewover50 #sewover50august24 #sewcialists #babylocknz #brotherstellairenz #babylockauckland #a0PDFprintingnz #a0pdfprintingauckland #A0patternprintingnz #A0patternprintingauckland #sogladmymotherforcedmetosew

#Waiwot or What Am I Working On Today? Julie @consistentlydifferentdesigns ? Probably not what I should be doing, tbh, but there you go!! . Last week I got it into my head that I wanted to make @bellalovespatterns #KaiaCoat with this beautiful wool fabric which I think came from my aunt's stash. She was a #FabricAddict but didn't sew 🤦🏼♀️ and gave things to her mother (or a dressmaker!) to sew for her. I think this was intended to be a skirt length as it was only 96cm long; the Kaia calls for 1.5m of double faced wool, and all the instructions are for handsewing double faced wool! . Nothing daunted, I managed to squeeze all the pattern pieces from the fabric with a small amount of piecing at the bottom of the back sleeves, and cut facings from a contrasting fabric and a lining, both from stash. I interfaced the fronts, upper back and collar pieces with weft interfacing from stash, doubled on the welt pocket openings. I have used lining selvedge to strengthen the shoulder seams. . Swipe to see the process to date (in reverse order!) The pattern layout picture is very slightly different to what I actually did in order to do the piecing. Pockets, front darts and collar done, downhill from here, yes?? I think I'd better go and do all the other things I need to do now, after a few days away! . #SewOver50 #SewOver50September24 #SewOver60 #PetiteSewist #blpkaia #SewScottish #SewSustainably #SustainableSewing #SewistsOfInstagram #SewersOfInstagram #IMakeMyOwnClothes #SlowFashion #MeMade #ISewThereforeIAm #JeCoudsDoncJeSuis #JeCoudsCeQueJePorte

I didn’t get around to posting anything last week because everything was super busy. But now it’s finally the weekend and everything is a bit more relaxed again!
