As I don't share pictures of my daughter's faces on this public forum, you are missing out on the devastating cuteness/ sass of Little Red Riding Hood and the evil queen from Snow White. But here are my makes! RRH: dress is her own, as are the leopard print boots! Cape was the @twigandtale #travellercape #tttravellercape which was an absolute joy to sew. Fabric from @calicolaine EQ: this was more of a journey. I used our trusty @wavesandwild eclipse for the base of the top and sleeves. I used a tutorial from @helens__closet to draft the funnel neck and a tutorial from @seamwork to do the bell sleeves. I then used a tutorial from @kim_en_ik to make a 1/4 circle skirt and hemmed the lot with a lettuce hem. First time I've made so many hacks to a pattern, and it worked! She loved it. I recently applied to be a @twigandtale storyteller for the next 9 months, and could not be more excited. For this month, I decided to make the Traveler Cape. When I think of imagination, the first thing that comes to mind is childhood, and how it feels like you can imagine anything during those years! When I was a child, I had a red cape that I would wear to church. I loved that cape. It was so comforting, almost like a big blanket that was socially acceptable to wear in public. We often associate capes with imaginative play, like dressing up as a super hero. I sewed up my Traveller Cape yesterday with a herringbone fleece like fabric and a cotton linen blend as the lining. I wanted to keep my first cape simple, classic, and timeless, so I sewed the pattern as written. What a lovely pattern. As I finished sewing the lining to the outer fabric, the gears in my mind started turning. I have some unique modification ideas for the next cape I make with this pattern, and cannot wait! I love how sewing brings creativity and encourages my imagination to run wild. Pattern gifted as part of the storyteller experience- the Twig and Tale Traveller Cape. I would highly recommend this pattern to anyone! The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. You do not even need a serger! Sometimes what your 4yo really wants is a Red Riding Hood cloak... and a wooden hat. Fortunately, I can oblige! I've made cloaks before but this was my first time making a fedora - both from @twigandtale. I need a hat for me now! The woodgrain applique is really fun. The outer is faux suede and the inner is cotton. For the cloak, the outer was a wool/poly remnant and the inner is a cotton duvet cover from IKEA. TRAVELLER CAPE This cape is too warm for the rising temps. Even so, it was welcomed enthusiastically into the tickle trunk (that’s a vintage Canadian kids’ show reference, for anyone wondering). Loving the dress-up years. ❤️ It’s dang cute (and this pattern is great), but velvet.. omg. Pile fabrics are next level! Admittedly, I didn’t do a ton of research (though there are plenty of Sewing With Velvet 101 resources out there). Here’s what I learned from my experience: Making The Thing is no longer enough for me. I gotta do better. While rescuing and thrifting and upcycling is already part of my sewing practice, it’s time to think about how to use the fabric I collect more responsibly. That maybe starts with learning more about textiles and techniques. By sewing the clothes I wear, I can be different, and make a difference." ---- In September, the Twig + Tale Storytellers chatted about the theme Transitions. Change is inevitable in life - seasons change, we learn and evolve, children grow, jobs change - we are constantly adapting. For many of us, sewing remains a touchstone through times of transition, and the things we make adapt with seasons, with phases of life. This month, Storyteller @carolkite49 is joining us on the Twig + Tale blog to share her thoughts on how the theme Transitions relates to her sewing. If you've spent time around the T+T community, chances are very good that you've seen some of Carol's beautiful projects. Her fabric choices and creative ideas are always inspiring, and we particularly love how she is able to take a favourite pattern, reinterpret it, and transform it into something new and different. Origins is the @twigandtale Storyteller’s theme for June. It was a prompt for me to start and finish a project that involved a special connection with the materials involved. A while ago, a friend gave me a blanket that belonged to her grandparents to make a collared traveller cape for her daughter, and use the leftover material to make something for my daughter. She was looking for another blanket, but at the time it could not be located. Eventually, after that project was completed, the intended blanket was found, and moved into my sewing area, where it sat. Occasionally, it got pushed to a new location in the room, but it essentially sat. With the prompt of this theme, I made the intended traveller cape, and a new bunny Pathfinder for my little one. She was overdue a new Pathfinder, her brothers still fit their Pikachu and Yoda Pathfinders for a second year of wear. The lining was an upcycled sheet, that was sitting next to the blanket in my sewing area and was just the perfect shade of pink. Both items have personalised internal pockets, with their owner’s name embroidered on the pocket. I used the Woodland embroidery for this. I didn’t want to leave my friend out, and although she didn’t want anything made for her, I made a small hot water bottle cover based on the outline of the marine hottie covers. Coming full circle to my origins, the first Pathfinder I made, I photographed in one of the same spots. It’s lovely to see the growth in my own sewing since that moment. Sometimes you need the right sort of colour for a project, and this was one such project. Inspired by the @twigandtale Storyteller theme of colour, my aim was to make a Princess Anna inspired cape for a little person, currently in their Frozen era. Searching for “Anna Pink”, I started out in op shops, looking for sheets or fabric to upcycle. Unable to find the colour that I craved, I purchased it. I found some heavier satin type material that I had been given and used that for the lining. I used the Traveller Cape pattern with the Breeze collar, a size down for optimal fit. I used rather stiff interfacing on the collar. To add the decorative stitching, I practiced on scrap and decided that I needed embroidery paper underneath. I had a lot of fun playing around with the different stitches on my machine! I love the teal on the pink and how colour can compliment and pop. Originally I’d planned a jewel button, but then couldn’t find a suitable one, and opted for a sew in jewel. I hand stitched my button loop closed, added snaps and sewed my jewel over the top. A tab would have been simpler, but sometimes I sew first and gather embellishments later. The colour must be right, as said toddler recognised it as an Anna cape.
