It's been an immense few weeks here! We went on an impromptu trip to my parents' in Malaysia, celebrated birthdays and festivities - topped with the customary sickness over the whole period 🤒🤧🤪 I feel truly grateful however, for the plentiful laughters and time spent with family and siblings, including my 1.5yo nephew whom we met for the very first time ❤ Not much sewing was done despite my best intentions (it's the thought that counts, right?! 😆) but I did manage a much-needed new pair of swimsuit for B, and a pair of bloomers for the little nephew 🥰 The latter was all traced, cut and seamed within 2 hours before leaving for the airport! Reposting this with better photos…Part of last month’s experimentation with small fabric cuts. It also just happens that this is a perfect submission for the #oneyardchallenge this month hosted by @fluidplusdrape. A little self drafted skirt made out of a little over half a yard of damaged Mali cloth cotton my husband bought over ten years ago in Brooklyn. It was previously stretched over a frame as a wall hanging in our Bushwick apartment and had holes all around the edges. I was originally planning to turn it into bias tape. My daughter saw it and asked for a skirt. It’s a nice lightweight cotton that is perfect for a summer skirt. I was just barely able to eke one out after squaring it. I also did French seams on this. And there are patch pockets! And I matched the pattern, almost exactly! I used the back pocket pattern piece for the #tttreeclimbers. It’s a great size for little hands and treasures. It’s so nice to see this fabric being used again. #selfdraftedpattern #malicloth #SewYourStory

Next month, we will see a lot of bunnies I think ;) I am working one some tree climbers for the kids and thought of adding some bunnies to them. Following my previous post, here is the 2nd of my Storyteller 'WIP's... and with a bit extra! 🤭💝 This was in fact the first garment I was planning when Twig+Tale made the sampling call-out for the newly released Undersea Embroidery collection ⭐🌊🐚 I've made these shorts countless times because they are the comfiest for B (they're designed as elasticated bloomers/pantaloons), and the embroidery has truly brought all the sparks and excitement back into sewing these simple shorts 🥰 I stitched two sets of embroidery - one for each pocket - but ended up choosing just one with the Undersea Garden... I got enamoured stitching the tiny little fish and decided to have a school of them! 🐟🐟 Can I also mention my two new favourite stitches from this collection? The fly stitch, which you have already seen on the Harbour top neckline, and oh my, the whipped backstitch! I used this stitch for the first time on the tiny starfish and the Seashells (pic 4), and it felt like the dark magic of embroidery to me 😂 Maybe a little disappointed that the seashells didn't make it to the shorts, but in the spirit of Storytellers, that shall be another WIP to look forward to 😜😁 The Undersea collection is indeed fun to sew, with delightful textures and colours only limited by your imagination 🌈 I feel as though the sewing stars have aligned for me this month 💫 Thanks so much @twigandtale for the sampling opportunity! On being Mindful.🌿 For me, being mindful is about connection. Connection with myself, and with others. I feel there is a drive within all of us to be creative in some form. In taking time to create with our hands in particular, we are better able to notice the needs of our spirit and foster connection. This month, I wanted make a special outfit for my eldest daughter in honor of her fifth birthday. I chose the T+T tree climbers in linen and the Purl Soho gathered summer top to transition into summer. The T+T tree climbers are a favorite for their versatility and comfortable pantaloon style. They are indeed perfect for climbing trees, as well as for dressing up. They are my first completed linen garment! I also incorporated as much handwork as possible by adding an embroidered affirmation (inspired by @bomblesandmookin ‘s Intention project of last year) and a scrunchie. I was conscious to try to sit with my thoughts and feelings as I sewed, to notice them and let them pass without judgment. It is a challenging practice! But I found that making her clothes in this mindset allowed me to meditate on the time that has passed since she was born and better connect with who she is becoming. I sewed this nightie for my daughter a while ago, and while she initially loved it, she’s been refusing to wear it. I asked her why, she said because it doesn’t have pants. The @twigandtale Tree Climbers came to my rescue. This pattern was such a quick and easy sew and turned out so cute and comfy. She was trilled about her “nightie” shorts. The fabric is one of her old muslin baby blankets. I received the pattern in exchange for sharing my honest experience. On Experiment(tation). 🌿 The Storyteller theme for July was Experiment. I have been wanting to try ice dying, but couldn’t find the time or space. So I settled for trying to organize and edit my fabric resources and see how many garments I could get out half yard and under one yard pieces. I have a pair of linen shorts for myself still in process. A pocket skirt for my oldest. And this very successful set of #tttreeclimbers and gathered dress. I experimented with some new construction techniques on these garments. I lengthened the top and added on-seam, French seam pockets. I did French seams on the pants as well. I tried 1/4 inch elastic in the legs, which my daughter felt was more comfortable than the 5/8 inch. I made a size 4 for my almost three year old with hope she can still use this set next summer, so the fit is a little big. According to the size chart my daughter has the height of a 4 year old and the waist of an 18 month old. I didn’t blend because of the pantaloon style, but maybe I will try that next time. But she is so happy! She has been wearing them almost every single day. Even pulling them out of the hamper. Patterns: TT Tree Climbers in size 4 and Purl Soho Kids Gathered Summer Top in size 3. I am so grateful to be part of the @twigandtale Storytellers' community again this year, starting with the March theme of 'Inspiration'. Hanging on to the warm days as much as we can, but I think these will work pretty well as layering pieces for autumn days 🍃🍂 I initially planned a plain shirt and shorts for outdoor and climbing days (I know... white?! But I couldn't resist 😜). And then I remembered the marvellous Scout pants that @bomblesandmookin made almost a year ago now - with EGG-pockets 🥚🥚🥚 More specifically the box pockets from the Fishing Vest add-ons (such a clever mix-and-match, Lorna!)... These pockets are indeed a lot of fun to make with colourful scraps! The bird patch/embroidery motif came from @mama_puffin who recently screen-printed her very own Coot fabric to make a Meadow skirt for her little one. Much laugh was had on coot-y puns, and she even shared her coot template so we can make our own 😍 (thank you, Wietske!) I think it just looks so 'coot' here and B is already asking for some baby coots 😆😂 This sew turned out to be such a enjoyable one... and certainly the best fun in my recent sewing year has come from getting to know some wonderful sewists and makers from all over the world (thanks to @twigandtale ) 😊🌿✨ So looking forward to sewing with everyone again - you all inspire me!!
