My top 9 posts of 2024 are also some of my proudest projects of 2024 too. I feel I've really accomplished a lot this year and feel whilst taking time on some more complex projects I've also really engaged more with my craft, felt I've developed quite a bit and really made some things I'm proud of. I've also taken part more socially with sewing by attending a class and taking part in my first social sewing days. I've felt I've learned new techniques and really found that sewing and creating is an important part of relaxing and taking time for me. I've tried to make sure that most days I'm cutting out a bit of time for creativity as it really helps with my mental health. Here's to more projects in 2025! Happy New Year all! Our most-asked footwear questions answered - check it out! ⬇⁣ ———————⁣ When it comes to footwear, we’ve heard many say they feel a bit intimidated because they just aren’t sure what materials to use. ⁣ ⁣ We’re pleased to tell you - you can use nearly anything you like, depending on your goal. It really is that easy!⁣ ⁣ As far as the outside and lining of your shoe, the options are about as varied as your imagination - almost any mid- to heavyweight fabric will work. From winter woolens and flannels to light linens and cottons, there are options for nearly every season and style. And they require little more than scraps, for great scrapbuster or upcycle projects. ⁣ ⁣ For soles, your intended use can help you decide. For indoor shoes when traction is not a concern, many heavyweight materials will do, such as denim, canvas, twill and others. The same is true for non-walkers.⁣ ⁣ However, please always consider safety when making choices for slick floors, or for wearers with limited mobility or balance. In these instances when traction is required for your shoes, you can consider purpose made products like "grippy dot" fabric or ToughTek, to options like real or faux leather or vinyl which has adequate texture. You can also create your own sole material using products like Sock Stop, or other DIY options. I stumbled across this slipper pattern from Twig and Tale and thought it would make a really cute present for the youngest 4 niblings. Having never made footwear before I decided to trial the pattern by making myself a pair. Obviously I decided to make the foxes for myself, but I thought my nieces might like that one too. For my nephews I went with the bat and shark which have turned out pretty zany but I like them. After making my pair I decided to make them extra snuggly for the kids by adding two layers of cotton batting to the soles (I might try and do this to mine too retrospectively) and I think it made a big difference. They have non slip soles and are lined with super cosy cotton fleece. I sized up across all the slippers as the lining is quite thick, but had to translate UK sizing to New Zealand sizing. I saw the youngest three open theirs and they all put them on. The youngest declared that she was never going to take them off so I guess that's a success! This was a super fun scrap buster. The kids each picked an animal and I used what I had to help them come to life. This was also my first project of the year with the @twigandtale Storyteller’s team. This month’s theme was stories and I love how the scraps hold stories of past projects. The inside and sole is a brushed denim that I made a pair of Yanta Overalls for myself. I’ve sewed most of my life, but really got back into it as a hobby about five years ago – and the overalls were one of the first things I made for myself at that time. I used the brushed “wrong side” for a fuzzy inside. The outer is a heavy cotton that I originally used to make a baby carrier for my husband with our first baby. He said was the comfiest carrier he’d ever worn – both kids have long since outgrown it. I have a pair of shorts for me made out of the same fabric too. The felt for the dino spikes was part of a kitchen project in our old house. I used it as a soft backing for our spice storage. And the inner bunny ears fabric is left over from a dress I made my daughter a little while back. All those stories in these four little slippers, along with whatever the kids add to them.

some tigerboots were requested.. so i got to applicate black leather tigerstripes, and black leather tiger eyes and black leather tigernoses... and cute pink leather cheeks.. so we are quit content with this happy applicated tiger.. What is it about attics? I think it is the light. "What can I use to make my footwear?" 🤔⁣ "Don't I need special materials?"⁣ ⁣ It's a common question we get during #TTCosyToes week. So, we are exploring just that in the Twig + Tale Chat Group today on Facebook!⁣ ⁣ Generally speaking, there are so many options - the outer and lining will work with almost any mid- to heavyweight fabric, making it easy to customise to any style or season. Perhaps warm woolens in winter, or light linens in summer? They make great scrapbusters or upcycle projects as well.⁣ ⁣ As far as soles, the most important thing to consider is where and how they will be used. For non-walkers, or if slick floors are not a concern, many heavyweight fabrics like denim and canvas will work great.⁣ ⁣ When you need more traction for safety reasons, we've seen customers use many things, such as suede leather, faux leather, ToughTek, "grippy dot" pajama fabric and others.
