Taking pictures of my finished work - though I love it, and wouldn't skip it - is always the hardest part in sewing for me. In my flat the light is most of the time not good enough for taking pictures - or there simply is not enough "daylight" time for this task. Sewing can easily be done in the evenings - but taking good pictures is out of the question! So I usually take pictures during "everyday life": at the playground after daycare, at weekends at my mother's place or while we are outside on an excursion. And have you ever tried taking photos of the details of a garment while worn by an 18 month old child...? If I catch one picture that is not completely blurred, I call myself lucky. So it usually takes some time until I can show off the clothes I made. This one was finished two months ago. And it is the pattern that made me start sewing again after a break of over one year. It is just ridiculously cute! I love it! But sadly this little dragon here does not wear it very very often, because the hood is a bit too heavy. I used a whole ball (50g) of wool, which turned out to be too much. And of course thick woolen clothes are not the best choice at the moment, as the temperature climbs to 30 degrees these days in Vienna... So maybe it gets a second chance in fall - there is still some room for the little dragon to grow into this woolen skin. Dragon country... I've given up trying to get the tiny terror to stay still long enough to take a picture of this coat! So I got a few action shots on our walk through the Valtellina valley in northern Italy. The toddler believes that dragons live in the mountains here (a belief strongly encouraged by us I confess). The pattern for the coat is the @twigandtale #ttanimalcoat with the #ttdragonaddon I got for free from their newsletter. Thank you! The outer fabric is a wool felt I found @dekringwinkel for €3 per metre, which I suspect is a heavy duty upholstery fabric. It's as thick as a blanket and I'm not sure my swing machine is going to forgive me after I tried sewing through multiple layers with interfacing to make the spine, wings and ears. I broke two needles! But it's incredibly warm. The lining is a soft cotton khaki-coloured jersey I found in the @curatedbyedo sample sale a couple of years ago, and the claws are from a bit of felted wool I scavenged from my scrap bag. This isn't technically a finished project - it still needs top stitching and the lining isn't actually attached at the sleeves. But once you've shown a child an almost-complete dragon coat, there's no way it's going to stay sitting on the sewing table... #memade #sewing #sewingfortoddlers #twigandtale #pixiepeacoat

Our story teller theme for August is identity. Now I've had little time for sewing over the school summer holidays and less for deep reflection but as I look at these pictures of one of the few things I have made recently I realise that all of my garment creation is deeply rooted in tailoring each item to the person who will wear it. Whether that is their shape, their style or their imagination and what is that if not reaffirming their own unique identity. She dreamed a blue yellow and purple dragon and here it is made real. I think you can see she feels the part in it too. She really is one of a kind, and occasionally has a fiery nature too. I love her deeply. I also know that an important part of my identity is the ability to create. I feel very grateful for the inspiring people I have met on my sewing journey and the opportunities I have. I cant imagine life without sewing for those I care most deeply about. The beautiful wool was gifted in exchange for a write up on my @minervadotcom profile, the lining is a gift from a dear friend, the rest is from the scraps bag. Book Week 2022 - Dragon Girls 🐉 When my 5yo decided to go as a Dragon Girl for Book Week, my 3yo immediately decided that’s what he wanted to go as too! So I made him a “Mei the Ruby Treasure Dragon” costume. I had already made him the wings for Christmas last year, so I just had to add a tail, ears and horns. 🐉 I used all @twigandtale patterns - the #TTDragonWings, and the dragon ears, dragon tail and unicorn horns from the #TTAnimalAddOn and #TTDragonAddOn. All the fabric, thread and stuffing is second hand with new elastic, head band and interfacing to complete it. I used 5cm wide elastic to make a waistband which I sewed the tail onto with a zig zag stitch. 🐉 #DragonGirls #BookWeek #BookWeek2022 #SewingForKids #CanberraSews #SustainableSewing
