I used to always laugh about 'sad beige'. I was all about bright bold colours! And then I had more than one child and colour just became so overwhelming 🙈 Now I am all about sad beige (Well, more like neutral autumn) Like I love colour, but in an already busy day it's just SO overstimulating to the mind, so here's my wee trick - secret colour! I sewed these @twigandtale Tie Back Booties in soft shell for the baby to keep his toes warm while we're outside (because even 2 pairs of socks doesn't do much when it's cold outside) On the outside, they are plain grey. Nice and neutral, and will go with everything. On the inside though they are bright green! For a wee bit of secret happy colour pop without being too overwhelming to the mind 🙌 And the lime green can be folded over to be exposed if wanted that day. I also just love how perfect they are for keeping bubs toes warm in the carrier. Because we spend a lot of time outdoors all winter long, they've already been earning their spot in bubs capsule wardrobe! It really is that easy!⁣ ⁣ As far as the outside and lining of your shoe, the options are about as varied as your imagination - almost any mid- to heavyweight fabric will work. From winter woolens and flannels to light linens and cottons, there are options for nearly every season and style. And they require little more than scraps, for great scrapbuster or upcycle projects. ⁣ ⁣ For soles, your intended use can help you decide. For indoor shoes when traction is not a concern, many heavyweight materials will do, such as denim, canvas, twill and others. The same is true for non-walkers.⁣ ⁣ However, please always consider safety when making choices for slick floors, or for wearers with limited mobility or balance. In these instances when traction is required for your shoes, you can consider purpose made products like "grippy dot" fabric or ToughTek, to options like real or faux leather or vinyl which has adequate texture. Ah, the season of comfort and all things cozy – when the soundtrack in my head is the warm strumming of an acoustic guitar and the crunch of leaves underfoot. It’s a time of transitions and textures. Being a part of the @twigandtale storytellers this year has inspired me to slow down and savor my sewing projects. I took my time with these tie-back boots, choosing scraps of cotton that felt cohesive in color, enjoying each rippling running stitch by the campfire, and hand-cutting and braiding the leather strips for the ties. Autumn is full of textures in both scent and touch, and I wanted to echo that in these slippers. The wrinkles from the hand quilting remind me of the cozy quilts coming out of summer hibernation. The soft fleece mirrors the warm layers we’re beginning to wear to ward off the cool mornings and evenings, and the scent of leather feels almost like the fallen leaves on the damp ground. Like the seasons changing, my sewing habits are evolving too. I’ve learned that mindfulness is far more valuable than quantity, and true quality can never be rushed. My first @twigandtale project of 2025…. A pair of tiny tie-back boots. 🌿 It has been a long time since I have made something so small! These are size 2 - ~3-6 months - for a wee explorer on the way. (A gift — no more tiny toes in MY future. 😉 ) The outer is 100% lambswool from a shrunken sweater. Oh, make believe, you are a wonderful thing. Even if you are a school assignment. :) Jack's big history assignment was a wax museum project in which he had a research report, and also a project board and costume for wax museum night where he, and his classmates, presented their famous Medieval to Renaissance historical figures. Jack chose St. Alfred the Great, which was fabulous because we had most of what he needed already made from his Frodo costume last year. The one thing we added to the costume were the boots. These are the #tttiebackboots from @twigandtale and he did a lot of the work himself! The video tutorial was very helpful as a guide to lead him through the steps. We used flannel lining, fulled wool for the exterior, and leather on the soles. They came together so beautifully and just made the costume an immense success. The first pair I ever made were about 3 sizes too big but I keep wearing them because they're so warm. These ones will be even snugglier because they fit! Non-traditional Christmas stockings 👢🎁 One thing that I never understood as a child was why I couldn't fit my foot inside my Christmas stocking... The traditional shape is based on the shape of a sock, but most stockings are far from foot shaped and it was something I always found strange. So in our house we use a non-traditional stocking which will actually fit on a human foot - this year I've made a matching pair of boots for my two children. I used the @twigandtale Tie Back Boots pattern, I made from the outer and the lining from cotton so as a shoe to wear this wouldn't be the comfiest or most durable. I omitted the tie element from the original pattern and added a hanging loop to the back, sized to fit over the finals of our staircase (so stocking can easily be left out for Father Christmas to find). To personalise these for each child I've sewn their first initial onto the toe, using an applique stitch and contrasting thread. Size wise, this is a women's 12/ Mens10.5 which I feel is big enough to fit stocking filler presents in and small enough that the stocking won't be left under filled by the man in Red. (My daughter has previously had a similar shaped stocking made using an old slipper pattern I had, but the finish is nowhere near as nice) Fabric: Red/gold Star Rose and Bubble Cotton from @weaverdee_sew_craft lining: old duvet cover, previously used as curtains. First attempt at @twigandtale #tiebackboots for myself. They are so comfy and warm! My plan was to use this one to test the size, and then make other pair with wool batting quilted to the lining. But these are so toasty I don’t know if I need another pair.

Made some adjustments to the possum fur booties. I decided they were too hard to get on due to all that possum fluff so I added a bit more space to the back. Now they are much better! #twigandtale #tiebackboots

I think i will write in English now and then.. let's see how that work out.. (the english in my head is a bit mad.. because it used to be my second language.. but now as i live in Germany.. its becom my third.. its not happy about this degradation..) Screenprinted them with my @bobbin.hood set... they are quit green aren't they? quit green indeed.. In fact, they are so green, they hurt a little to the eye.. but well.. the Sandwichchild picked the leather herselve.. who am i to chainge that? I certainly do not have the reffined taste of a 6 year old 😂 I chainged the pattern in the front, to give the toes more space.. and added a sole.. As i whatch them.. i think i should wrap the cord only one time, in statt of 2 times.. what do you think? Another thing I'm realising is how much I love eye-catching colours. So bring on these cooler days,.. and using remnants to make #tiebackboots from @twigandtale . I've been making these every year for so many years! They are the best for lounging around at home. So easy to pull on, so easy to throw off (if you ever want to!) This year I've tried to be resourceful with stronger fabrics. Ich schaue raus. Der haupthase ist ausgebuxt und hoppelt vergnügt durch den Garten. Ich gehe raus. Ein Viertelstunde später ist mein Frisur ruiniert, hab Schnee überall. Aber der Hase, ha, der steckt im auslauf. Auslauf multi sicher verschlossen.. Zufrieden gehe ich herein, arbeite ruhig weiter. Als ich aufstehe um kurz ein tee zumachen.. Ein Blick im Garten: ein grauer Schatten versteckt sich unter dem Busch. Der Schatten hat 2 lange Ohren.. Das gleiche hasen-fang-drama wiederholt sich. Allerdings wird am Ende der Hase im Stall eingesperrt.. Der Hase blickt mich niedlich an. Aber wir wissen beide: das ist nür seine äußere Tarnung.. ❤ Winterstiefel nochmal Fotografiert. "What can I use to make my footwear?" 🤔⁣ "Don't I need special materials?"⁣ ⁣ It's a common question we get during #TTCosyToes week. So, we are exploring just that in the Twig + Tale Chat Group today on Facebook!⁣ ⁣ Generally speaking, there are so many options - the outer and lining will work with almost any mid- to heavyweight fabric, making it easy to customise to any style or season. Perhaps warm woolens in winter, or light linens in summer? They make great scrapbusters or upcycle projects as well.⁣ ⁣ As far as soles, the most important thing to consider is where and how they will be used. For non-walkers, or if slick floors are not a concern, many heavyweight fabrics like denim and canvas will work great.⁣ ⁣ When you need more traction for safety reasons, we've seen customers use many things, such as suede leather, faux leather, ToughTek, "grippy dot" pajama fabric and others. There are also many products you can apply to other fabrics to make them non-slip. (For safety reasons, when balance and mobility are a concern, please test any fabric you intend to use on the surfaces in your home to ensure they will provide adequate traction.)⁣ ⁣ What have you used on your successful shoes? Winter's chill has certainly set in here in New Zealand - time to make sure tiny toes stay warm! I am so smitten with these darling little Tie Back Boots by @urbanselfsufficiencynz.
