I’m very excited about my new make! It is so snuggly warm. This is a @twigandtale #trailblazervest in glorious quilted metallic rainbow fabric from @northernmonkeymakes lined with black polar fleece. Size H at the shoulder and graded to size I below the waist. I added an inside pocket and invisible zips to the inseam front pockets. Plus a hook for hanging. Specks and ‘made by me’ labels from @thespeckyseamstress Other pics show details I’m proud of - lining up of zip mainly One regret that was in cutting, I was so preoccupied with fussy cutting diamonds that I cut the front sides different coloured 🙈 the only non symmetrical bit. I’ve always got at least 3 or 4 projects spinning at any given time, but I’m terrible at documenting. Lately I’ve been working on a motorcycle vest for my brother-in-law. I started with the great Trailblazer Vest pattern from @twigandtale and have adapted it to meet all of his ideal vest requests. Here’s what I’ve changed: - shortened length for comfort while sitting on the bike - removed lining for a lighter weight in hot months - added zippers and expanding panels on the sides to accommodate layers in cooler months - added flat-felled seams for a tidy unlined finish - added welt breast pockets This is round 2 and there was lots of learning along the way. I’d highly recommend Twig and Tale patterns for anyone learning to sew. The pattern is super well written with lots of optional details and add ons, plus photos and video tutorials. TRAILBLAZER VEST  One of my 2023 sewing goals is outerwear and before diving right into coat making (I have great plans) I started of with a @twigandtale #TrailblazerVest . This project was challenge enough. It took a year for me to settle on the right fabric.  I ended up using medium-weight wool on the outside and 80/20 cotton-polyester teddy on the inside. I am quite happy with this choice for a first try.  With the vest, I definitely could have adjusted the fit, but I was worried to size down (I think I could have done so without issue and still have enough room for a warm sweater underneath. Now, the vest fits well, but my personal preference with warm wear is always close-fitting. Nonetheless, as it is the vest has already served me well.  Sidenote: I had originally intended to add the front shield, but realized how well the vest fits as an added layer under my winter coat, so I omitted it. Step aside Patagonia, the consultants can now come to me for their office uniform! My lovely husband doesn't really ask me to make things for him, especially since I made him a very ill fitting pair of pants couple of years ago. So I considered it as a sign of his growing confidence in my sewing skills when he asked me to make him a vest for winter. I was immediately excited and started looking for suitable patterns. We finally settled on the #trailblazervest from @twigandtale . I found it to be a pretty straightforward sew. The pattern itself is great and the instructions are very thorough. For the main fabric I used boiled wool from Etsy and the lining is a remnant I got a couple of years ago from a fabric shop in Lisbon. My Trailblazer vest from @twigandtalepatterns went to India with me on a magical journey. I added lots of internal pockets to keep my valuables safe. The zip front meant I could zip it up in crowded areas, knowing anything in those pockets was safe - not that we had any bother at all in over a month of independent travel in India. #twigandtale #trailblazervest

I managed two finished pieces this month, both new to me patterns: @twigandtale #tttrailblazervest and @sewhouse7 #freerangeslacks The #trailblazervest was a birthday gift for husband @windsorchairsnewburyport, I quilted the flannel lining taking a page out of @quantumsewist book, using scrap fleece as the batting🤓. I also added an inner chest pocket (embellished with a Windsor chair of course😏) The pants were intended to be a wearable muslin, though they sadly don’t fit well over my larger than normal calves. I made up a size 2 as drafted which also ended up being super short. I do like the intended style and will definitely make adjustments to the length and lower leg width on my next go. I did add a drawstring with grommets and some extra topstitching on the waistband for personal preference. Hoping to get my sewjo back on track for October! Happy sewing to all! August #brandambassador sew for @ukfabricsonline was the newly launched Textura waterproof fabric. I chose this crazy, colourful version of the Textura, along with a navy antipil fleece for lining to make a gilet. I always struggle to find a gilet that fits my proportions and this was a tricky sew for me. I used the Twig and Tale Trailblazer vest pattern which was easy to follow and i love the professional finish, however i did have some fit issues along the way - although i dont think you can tell in my finished item! The fabric however was a breeze to sew! I used a thick wadding to make sure this would be a functional make for our Welsh weather, basting it to the textura layer. A 100/16 needle zipped through all the layers, and i love how light & easy the Textura was to handle - no fraying or pulls when cutting or sewing. Finally completed my modified version of the @twigandtale #trailblazervest using a quilted green knit and textured knit for the lining from @hobbylobby. What a super EASY pattern to follow! So well explained and such an excellent fit! I made a size small. Since I used a knit that would stretch, I additionally took it in on the sides and raised the back scoop line to fall more at my lower waist just for style preference. Next time I’ll remember to line the placket with plenty of interfacing BEFORE I put the snaps on and they all pull out and I have to buy new snaps and do it all over again 😂. Oh my, that was very fun. All on me though for not paying adequate attention. Again, a perfect and thorough pattern. If/when I ever release my own patterns again, @twigandtale would be a great model to follow! I’m in love with my warm and toasty new vest!! Maybe the smile says that without me verbalizing it 😂 This new fabric print is on pre-order right now at @myfabricdresser and I used Softshell for this vest. Pattern is the trailblazer vest from @twigandtale and I used insulation from @discoveryfabrics to make it warm. Then I used Mora faux leather from @emmalinebags for the side panels and finally I lined it with space dye fabric from @figofabrics Whew! I think that’s everyone!!! I’ve been wearing this almost daily for the past month as spring shows up and goes away, over and over and over and over…. You get the idea 😜

VERZWARINGSHESJE Van de fysio kregen we de tip om voor Marney een verzwaringshesje aan te schaffen voor in de klas. Na een week een hesje geleend te hebben, zag de juf inderdaad verbeteringen bij Marney. Maar de prijzen van de hesjes😱 Dus aan de slag om zelf een hesje te maken. @twigandtale thank you for brainstorming with me on this project 😘 Ik heb gekozen om een tweedehands verzwaringsdeken (10€) te gebruiken voor de voering, En 2 theedoeken van de Action voor de buitenstof (Marney wilde groen). Goedkoop geslaagd dus voor de materialen. Maar wat is een verzwaringsdeken vernaaien zwaar haha Allemaal glazen balletjes erin dus ik moest eerst 2 lijnen naaien waartussen ik het patroon kon knippen. En dan nog zat alles vol balletjes. en een 7 kg deken door de naaimachine ploeteren is ook niet Alles 😅 Maar het is gelukt! Trots op het eindresultaat en hopelijk heeft Marney er veel profijt van! It's impossible to capture the colour of this fabric, it's a lovely purple/grey herringbone tweed that I picked up at a craft show at NEC earlier this year. I'm not completely happy with my top stitching around the bottom so I might unpick that and do it again with longer stitch length. But other than that I'm quite happy with the way this turned out 🙂 The pattern has great projector files, which include mirrored pattern pieces too. Heading off to the yard this morning and a good opportunity to model my latest made, the @twigandtale Trailblazer vest. Quilted waistcoats are very in at the moment, but I wanted one that I could layer up to ride in or wear for winter walks. I got some wind/water resistant microfibre fabric and quilted it myself, adding cute horse print lining. It’s a lovely pattern with excellent instructions, and true to size, according to finished garment measurements. The only thing I found was that the armscye is a bit snug, but I can live with that. This is my third trailblazer vest that I made especially for my wonderful, patient and indulgent husband. This may have become a combined fathers day and birthday present as I truly underestimated just how long this would take me to complete! This was made out some beautiful olive brown wax cotton from Guthrie & Ghani, and the cotton lining was from Minerva. This was my first time working with wax cotton, and apart from being overly cautious not to mark the fabric and only pin within the seam allowances I enjoyed working with it and making a garment that I hope will last throughout the seasons. The part that took me the longest was quilting all the lining fabric and trying to keep my stitching on top of the plaid lines. I again added a garment hanging loop, and this time I also used the twig + tale concealed lining pocket blog to add a mobile phone pocket, I was really happy with how my pattern matching turned out here. When travelling through Taiwan, it is impossible to miss the many traces of Japanese (past) presence on the island. After a defeat of the Chinese Qing Dynasty by the Empire of Japan in the 1st Sino-Japanese War, Taiwan was handed over to become a Japanese Colony in 1895.  50 years later, with Japan’s surrender in World War II, Taiwan returned to be placed under Chinese control (then the Republic of China) in 1945. During this 50-year-rule, the Japanese colonizers greatly developed infrastructure and left a great deal of impressive (and often beautiful to this day) architecture behind, the aforementioned traces of foreign rule. Taiwan’s ressources were exploited for the benefit of Japan, and construction projects often happened at a great human cost among Taiwanese workers. Despite a political liberalization process (including suffrage) in Japan in the 1920s, Taiwanese did not enjoy a great deal of liberal or civic rights, particularly if they belonged to Indigenous groups, were women or positioned themselves in opposition to Japanese rule. While Japanese occupators managed to increase the overall standard of living, developmental status and access to education, memorials across the island remind the curious visitor of totalitarian rule, structural discrimination, cultural oppression, as well as atrocities and massacres (including the 228 incident and Musha incident). Assessments of Japan’s rule are often divided, seeing both the positive and the undeniable negative aspects, making this one more fragment in Taiwan’s complicated and multi-faceted political history. Ik weet nog steeds niet precies welke kwaliteit het is, maar ik zag er meteen een bodywarmer in (het is een soort gevoerde stof). Ik ging op zoek en kwam het #trailblazervest tegen. Echt en heel mooie afwerking (swipe voor een foto van de zakken). Omdat ik maar een halve meter had en de stof lastig recht te knippen was, lopen de strepen niet door. Ik kan me er niet druk om maken (en Vigo is lekker beweeglijk, dus het valt toch niet zo op 😉). Rain has stopped play on the garden room, so it's a pleasure to get back to sewing. Starting upon a bespoke couture gilet that I have had in mind for sometime. I am riffing on the @twigandtale Trail Blazer vest. Toile done and I am now enjoying cutting it out from gorgeous Kingfisher Flash - Storm herringbone tweed from @fabworksmillshop. I made a Twig and Tale trailblazer vest for myself and learned a few lessons along the way 🥴 🔸nonstretch softshell shows up every easing mistake along a princess seam, and doesn't press into a curved hem well. I straightened the hem of this one, which in the end will work out better for horse riding so I'm not mad about it. If I'd made it lined, the way it's drafted, the curved hem would have come up beautifully. 🔸Faux fur makes a mega mess to cut and sew, but was surprisingly easy to substitute for an extra cosy neckline 🔸sizing down based on the finished garment measurements for a more close fitting finish was very simple with how clear the twig and tale sizing charts were, but I forgot to consider that the armhole would be smaller for the smaller sizes, and needed to alter it to fit my massive biceps (🤣) Altogether, as usual, the T+T instructions were thorough and well laid out, and even though there were a few more intermediate elements (a zipper, pockets inserted into princess seams, a collar), it felt super achievable. I love sewing practical things I'll get to use in my everyday outdoorsy life :) I think if/when I do this again, I'll go for the oversized fit with a bunch of pockets for beach walks #tttrailblazervest #ttstorytellers

Part 2 of my #prsurprisesprint2025 ensemble was this Trailblazer Vest, pattern by @twigandtale and fabric from @fabriclandlangford The outer fabric is a polyester with polyurethane membrane laminate on the back. The lining is a quilted lining. I did the pocket linings in a lighter weight Supplex nylon woven to relieve bulk. The topstitching echoes what I did on the Round 1 hoodie. Navy lining goes with the hoodie, and the outer tweed is coordinating but not matchy-matchy because I did not want to do a Canadian tuxedo. While we're lucky enough to fully experience all four seasons here in Montenegro, I find little joy in winter. I'm not built for cold, dark days. Sunshine gives me life. My family exchanges homemade gifts every Christmas. When I drew my Marvel comic loving teenage nephew’s name I went on the hunt for some vintage comic fabric and was chuffed to find this. I bought the Trailblazer family set of patterns and set to work dismantling one of my old work jackets and fussy cutting each of the vest panels to feature different characters. It turned out fantastic and he was so proud of it. Late post, but here’s my entry for the Pattern Review Surprise Sprint round 2 (final round): Make it an outfit! The challenge was to take the hoodie we made in round 1 and sew additional item(s) to make a complete coordinated outfit. Since we were going to be out of town camping for a few days right in the middle of the round, I decided to make a straightforward pair of sweatpants from Ottobre (and elevate them with some side seam piping) and a Twig + Tale Trailblazer vest, which I’ve made before (see scrappy flannel interlining in pic 11). Added sashiko stitching in a cedar pattern to the back panel of the vest in order to pay homage to the eastern red cedar trees found in Mammoth Cave National Park. V is for Vest! I am really happy with how this vest turned out! I made it as a gift for @salat.and.spoons and now that she has finally received it, I can post! I used a thick wool from Surge Fabrics for the outer and a Japanese milled Robert Kaufman cotton from @snugglymonkey (who helped me match colors from afar- thank you!) this was also my first attempt at sewing with leather and I have to say my machine handled it like a champ! Fabric: Chocolate & Cream wool from @surgefabricshop lining cotton is sevenberry Robert Kaufman from @snugglymonkey and leather is scrap cowhide. The made to order! My five “and a half and a quart” year old has very specific requests for his wardrobe; including a new bodywarmer. In search of cotton matelassé we found this very awesome red double face (other side is a striking blue), he paired it with a black zipper and this cotton lining. When planning a project, you probably consider this like colour and drape - but how about texture? The way a fabric feel can be oh-so-important, and in fact, make or break whether or not a garment ends up getting worn. Wool and its halo of fuzzy fibres, slubby silk noil, ridged corduroy, a smooth crisp cotton - texture draws your hand to the fabric, exploring how it feels against the skin. But texture is more than just the feel of a fabric - it can also be used very effectively to create visual interest. There are many creative techniques for introducing texture into your sewing projects, and our Storytellers have explored some really amazing ones this month. Since fishing was such a highlight for the kiddos this past year I decided to make them some fishing vests for Christmas. In this past month we have discovered that these vests can be for so much more then just fishing. The box pockets are super roomy and can hold lots of fun things like baby puppy stuffies, snacks, all sorts of pencil crayons, books, magnifying glasses, and even a water bottle. I can’t imagine how many nature items I will find in those pockets come spring-time 😆. Yesterday, the girls decided to start on their nature journals for the year and headed out to see what they could find. They made sure to stock their vest pockets with everything they may have needed for their adventure. VERZWARINGSHESJE Van de fysio kregen we de tip om voor Marney een verzwaringshesje aan te schaffen voor in de klas. Na een week een hesje geleend te hebben, zag de juf inderdaad verbeteringen bij Marney. Maar de prijzen van de hesjes😱 Dus aan de slag om zelf een hesje te maken. @twigandtale thank you for brainstorming with me on this project 😘 Ik heb gekozen om een tweedehands verzwaringsdeken (10€) te gebruiken voor de voering, En 2 theedoeken van de Action voor de buitenstof (Marney wilde groen). Goedkoop geslaagd dus voor de materialen. Maar wat is een verzwaringsdeken vernaaien zwaar haha Allemaal glazen balletjes erin dus ik moest eerst 2 lijnen naaien waartussen ik het patroon kon knippen. En dan nog zat alles vol balletjes. en een 7 kg deken door de naaimachine ploeteren is ook niet Alles 😅 Maar het is gelukt! Trots op het eindresultaat en hopelijk heeft Marney er veel profijt van! This is my third trailblazer vest that I made especially for my wonderful, patient and indulgent husband. This may have become a combined fathers day and birthday present as I truly underestimated just how long this would take me to complete! This was made out some beautiful olive brown wax cotton from Guthrie & Ghani, and the cotton lining was from Minerva. This was my first time working with wax cotton, and apart from being overly cautious not to mark the fabric and only pin within the seam allowances I enjoyed working with it and making a garment that I hope will last throughout the seasons. The part that took me the longest was quilting all the lining fabric and trying to keep my stitching on top of the plaid lines. I again added a garment hanging loop, and this time I also used the twig + tale concealed lining pocket blog to add a mobile phone pocket, I was really happy with how my pattern matching turned out here. The weather has just turned cold ⛈️ here meaning we had the perfect opportunity to test out our new @twigandtale Trailblazer Vests. I made two matching quilted vests for my elder two using this fabulous @elliewhittakerstudio fabric from @spotlightstores. I quilted it using black thread around the main designs on the fabric to add a bit of puff and make them stand out more. They have inseam pockets and are super warm and lightweight. I deliberately went up a size from what they normally wear so we’ll hopefully get a few seasons out of these beauties. Just have to love how much quicker it is to make a garment second time around- pattern is already cut out, instructions are fresh in your mind.
