Well this present was a total success! My nephew loves the Fortnite llama so much he popped his aviator hat straight on, gave me a big hug and kept it on throughout brunch! You may remember this from this past winter (UK winter), but it's just been featured in the @twigandtale newsletter about quilted pieces so I thought it should get another showing! I got to visit my brother in Utah back in March and had the best time seeing where he lives and playing in some snow. He got the first two photos as we were about to leave @altaskiarea and I got the last two while we were out for a very snowy walk at #BonnevilleShorelineTrail For my hat I used the pattern pieces to make #FoundationPaperPiecing sections of the top and flaps, and just did tiny half square triangles for the sides. For my brother's Zelda hat I made smaller pieced parts that I then fit into the pattern. (The Majora's Mask has some fabric paint as well to get the faded effect right!) My first make of 2022! A hat for myself for when I’m sewing in the middle of the night! Our basement is cold! Didn’t have enough of this gorgeous corduroy to line up the pattern but I think it turned out ok. It’ll be on my head so I won’t be able to see the disjunctions for them to annoy me. 😂 The boys are playing video games with their Papa in a special edition “screen time” for New Year’s Day. I generally resent time spent sewing for anyone other than myself, but I make an exception for my family (and some extreeeemely good friends) at birthdays and Christmas time. Made a new hat for my littlest babe, who, in the blink of a eye, has become a toddler. Now the adventures can really begin! Pattern is the #ttAviatorHat by @twigandtale with wool from @craftandthrift. (As an aside - recently I've been refraining from posting too much about my kids on here. They are such a big part of my life, they inspire me so much and I make a lot of things for them. And my gosh they are so cute. But they are also individuals with a right to privacy and anonymity and I'm still trying to figure out the right balance there. Hence trying to cover faces and not using names. X)

My messiest make of last year was also my favorite: the Aviator hat from @twigandtale. I wanted something I could embroider for each of the three young boys in my extended family who'd be together at Christmas and a hat fit the bill nicely. Little did I know how much I'd love seeing these come together, and it also introduced me to Twig & Tale, which are just the best composed patterns and directions I've ever seen. Can you believe this used to be a couple of IKEA cushions and an old blanket? Here I’ve made a couple of Twig and Tale Aviator Hats and I am so pleased with the results. My grand plan was to make a couple of matching ones with vintage wool blankets, but since I’ve been on a sewing hiatus I thought I’d test the pattern first with some repurposed materials. This was a great project to sink my teeth into. The instructions were clear and simple, and the video tutorial helped a bunch! I will say though, there were definitely some errors made, but also some lessons learned: 1) don’t forget to mark your notches, 2) time spent pinning is never wasted, 3) read the instructions 3 times and once more for good measure and 4) most importantly - TAKE 👏 YOUR 👏 TIME! 👏 I’m mostly a patient person, but I’m also of the mindset that “close enough is good enough”. In the past, I’ve found that that way of thinking has bitten me in the bum - I’ll get too excited to start a project that I want to see the end result right away, end up cutting corners and finish with something lacklustre that makes me feel like the whole thing was a waste of time. As a first time mum, my free time is now limited, and hence valuable. As such, this project has taught me to be mindful of the process and appreciate the care taken to get to the end result. It actually has been SO refreshing to focus on the task at hand, listen to some tunes and forget about the everyday stresses. Up until recently, downtime has taken the form of watching TV and scrolling on my phone - don’t get me wrong, I love doing it but sometimes I spend too long doing it for little joy. This was my first wearable make for my little girl and I can’t wait to make more. Unfortunately the hat ran a little small for me, but I enjoyed being matchy matchy for the day ❤️
