Found in Waldorf classrooms from Grade 1 onwards, the crayon roll helps to keep the child's crayons clean, neat and tidy by separating the colours into individual pockets. As the name suggests, it rolls up nicely to store and hold the crayons when not in use and can be secured together with the ribbon tie. On Identity. 🌿 In my application for Storytellers, I noted how their free Waldorf crayon roll pattern was the reason I found Twig and Tale patterns to begin with. I wanted to make foray into Waldorf handwork for my first child, and it was the best crayon roll pattern I could find. And then I was initiated into a magical world of pixie hooded capes and leaf blankets and wings. I can credit Twig and Tale with igniting a little fire in my heart that brought me back to sewing…and helped me find my identity as sewist. For the first time, I felt like I had found patterns that really fit my aesthetic and sewing goals. Being part of the Storytellers this year has been an enormous privilege and I am so thankful. Somehow, I never did make that crayon roll. Until now! In pondering this month’s theme, I realized I am a person who adores giving bespoke gifts. I delight in making gifts tailored to the interests and fancies of the particular person. So when a 6 year old birthday party invitation came this month and the gift suggestions were Barbie accessories or arts and crafts, I knew exactly what to give. I hereby present to you my first of many TT Waldorf crayon rolls, adapted for the recipient and the current Barbie zeitgeist. I added the butterfly motifs from the Woodland Alphabet embroidery and I love how they came out. Well, today I listed in my shop item that is absolutely new for me ☺️ It is crayon or panicle wet felted case. Pencil roll cases for 8 wax blocks and 13 pencils /wax crayons. Such a pencil case is used during studying in primary classes of Waldorf schools. I was inspired by galaxy and space motives and depict sun, stars and open space on the front side. Miss 4 and I have been home sick all week (just a bad head cold I think – testing negative for Covid) with no energy for anything much, so a good opportunity to finally finish this project.   When Twig and Tale released these beautiful NZ native flower embroidery patterns I already had in mind that I wanted to make a case of some sort for my knitting bits and bobs, so thought that would be a good home for them.   The case for the bits and bobs was originally based on the Twig and Tale #waldorfcrayonroll pattern, but it morphed quite a lot so it’s probably truer to say it is inspired by it now.   I began this project sometime in 2023 but because I was sort of making it up as I went along I put it down each time I couldn’t decide the right way forward, so it’s been a long time in the making. I’m really happy with how the embroideries came out; less stoked with the final product. That’s what I get for making it up as I go along with a head cold! Some bad decisions made last night when most of it was finally pieced together, one of which resulted in a blood stain near the button (that has fortunately mostly washed out) and a sore finger today. There is a reasonable chance I will rescue the embroideries off it and remake this at some stage, but it will suffice for now. Three years of a handwork BA degree are slowly coming to a close and as we are preparing for our exhibition I am going through all of my pieces and noticing what an abundance of colour, beauty and hard work I have created and collected. In between reading 50 books about homeschool and sewing face masks, I recently taught myself a few embroidery stitches. I used them to decorate some linen crayon rolls that I sewed for Michael and Willa and I’m thrilled with the result. Recently I have been given the incredible opportunity to participate in my all time favourite sewing pattern brands Twig + Tale storytellers project! The project means I’ll be sewing a number of projects for twig and tale over the next 9 months and documenting and sharing the projects. I’m incredibly excited and honoured 🤍 As a practice run with some hand dyed fabric technique’s I decided to finally make the beautiful (and free!!) Waldorf Crayon Roll pattern from twig and tales website. Made using 100% salvaged white scrap cotton, The colourful layer was tie dyed and the plain layer dyed using onion skins, then stitched together using the Bangladeshi Kanta stitching method. The beauty about a hand made roll is that I can make the holes to my needs!
